Due to scheduling conflicts at work i could not get the whole week off i usually do to hold the Adirondack Attack however i will be holding a small weekend hunt with around 8-12 Tradgangers attending. everything looks really good as there is a heavy mast of beech, acorns and hickory, TON of deer sign. also very late turkey hatch and there are young running a muck everywhere! i look very forward to this hunt. Justice T woodchucker will be ruling over the kangaroo court again to keep all in order! Toecutter will be the featured chef with fresh tuna and perhaps mako shark on the menu and Adirondack man will be helping me guide everyone to stands. will also be the FIRST hunt for Harito and son as well as Stone Knifes son Joe's first full fledged archery hunt. Kermitt dewitt (Bowspirit) will keep all intertained i'm sure with tails of his great frogging hunt of 08!! look very forward to seeing brother Drewsbow who has taught me a lot in life. we will be roaming the mountain of youth soon my friends!!!
-
I'm teaching a Bowhunter Ed course on the 4th Ken, so I won't be able to make it.
-
I'll have the knife that you made for me there Jeremy. Hopefully it brings me some luck!
Brian
-
Joe will have his new to him Bear grizzly, and I'm breaking out some sweet arrows out of my private stock for Joe on his first full fledged hunt. This is more exciting than opening day of deer for me. I'm only hoping Joe can keep the old man calmed down on this one :bigsmyl:
-
Good luck guys! Wish I could join you. Im not a betting man, but if I were, I would say Joe will be drawing first blood.
No need to remind you guys of the picture clause in the contract.....right?
-
Talked with a buddy of mine last night who works a charter in the same area as we are going out of, he said if we see any tuna it will probably be albacore as the blues and yellowfins aren't cooperating as of this last month or so. Mako on the other hand should be plentiful (from the sounds of it!!) :scared: WE WILL have fresh tuna one way or another on the mini adirondack attack! :readit:
Between the seafood, the venison marsala, venison bbq, wild turkey buritos, and mixed loin grill, we will eat like kings :archer:
-
Are you kidding me??? Venison marsala??? I shoulda done this years ago. What can I bring to contribute to the viddles? You can count me as 2! :bigsmyl:
-
Ahmen Brother , can't waite to see yall again . Drew
-
Brother , It has been way too long! WHERE YOU BEEN? We're gonna have to try out that water'n hole again!! I hear the jack daniels may have gone bad, can't very well let them serve innocent folk bad spirits. I'll be the official poison tester :goldtooth:
-
Nate,
right now the count is 10 but i think it will end up around 12 to 15.
-
I'm all ready to go!!!!! I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!
:campfire: :archer: :archer:
-
You know Chuck, I think I may still have that pic of your miraculous "through the chain link shot" I gotta either learn how to post pics :knothead: or send it to kenny. :D
-
No Dancing Chuck, Ok :wavey:
-
if possible it would be great if we could get everyone to come up on friday night and stay at my mothers house. that would make getting to the woods saterday much easier. lots of room, many beds and fllors, Drew is also bringing a camper that a few can stay in. 1 bunk bed but that is reserved for Woodchucker and Kermitt Dewit as CXhris can not sleep with out the gentle snore of a chain saw! :biglaugh:
-
We will be there on Fri  Counting the days.
-
Jim,
the Bear broadheads went out monday, should have them by tommorow. i will be moving my trail cam this sunday to where you and Joe will be sitting, now what happens if i post a pic of a 300 pound bear where your blind will be??? :scared:
-
I go over the Bear heads one more time with a file just to make sure when i send it airmail to that bugger it gets all the way through
-
Man! That sounds loke fun. I wish I could make it. Work just won't let me. :(
-
Looks good for Ru and me. We better get our new licenses soon. Ken I PM'd you. Let me know how we can help. Looking forward to seeing everyone.
Aram
-
Man, where the heck was I when this thread went up. Either way, it would appear my name has changed. Ah well...I guess I prefer Kermit to Domestic Death.
Ken, you can expect those arrows when I arrive. Think of them as a gift for the huntmaster. And btw, I'll be carrying along a tape recorder this year. Picked it up so I can send them (along with all my hunting antics) down to Killdeer...
P.S.- Nate, you should know as well as anyone else that my appetite is perhaps the only thing as large as my height. Better count me as 2... ;)
-
Looking forward to hunting with you guys. I have a feeling that someone will make meat this year. Ken sure is right about the mast crops this year. Nuts everywhere.
-
Black Squirrels BEWARE!!!!!!!!!! :scared: :bigsmyl:
-
John, I have the same feeling about someone making meat this year...also about there being a bunch of nuts in the woods (at least when we get there) :campfire:
Chris, er Kermit, I might have to put you as three ;)
-
got a good pic of an ole doe on my trail cam which Killdeer has dubbed Ma Barker! notice the 1/2 ear and big lump on her head, ain't she purty!!!!
-
First you called her my girlfriend, now you say she aint pretty. :saywhat: , the reason she snorted at me for so long last year was I clipped her ear for her. I could have taken her If I "wanted" but I just wanted a souvenir  . that's the story and I'm sticking to it!
-
That's the opening weekend of the Pa. season. I'll be skulking around the woods here in Bedford County. Enjoy...I know it will be a great adventure 8^).
-
Alright, I think it's time everyone listed what tackle they'll be bringing to the hunt. Always interesting to see everyone's tastes and what works for them. Guess I'll start.
-Bear Montana, 66#@30" (Don't think I'll ever need another bow besides "Montana")
-Carbon Express 6075 carbon shafts. 620-grain weight. (Don't think I'll need another shaft either)
-225-grain Wensel Woodsman broadheads. 200-grain Hex Head for any squirrel who comes too close...
-
I'm bringing "Old Grizz".....
The 47# 1967 Bear Grizzly I shot my spikehorn with last year.
6 custom made cedar arrows made by my good friend and Master Arrowsmith Joe Skipp. They're tipped with Bear Razorheads that belonged to my good friend Lew,who "made the journey" 3 years ago.
6 "Joe Skipp" cedars tipped with Ace "Hex-Head" blunts for those trophy Black Squirrels.
4 Flu-Flus, that were made and given to me by My Brother "drewsbow" last year. Now.....should any of the Black Squirrels go out on a limb and "tempt me".....
I'm gonna stuff them all in my back quiver that I made from a Wyandotte kit 9 years ago. It's been riding on my back ever since, and it's as "broke-in" and comfortable as an old pair of jeans.
See you Soon My Friends!!!!! :campfire: :archer: :archer:
-
Figured I'd throw in last year's group pic...getting all nostalgic...

-
Wow!!!!! That picture brings back memories!!!!! :bigsmyl:
-
Joe and I will be shooting our Bear Grizzly's, I will have four Fletch GT3555 topped off with some Bear heads compliments of our host Ken. Joe will be shooting some compressed cedars that I made topped off with some Black diamond heads he will also have a couple HH 5/16 shafts with the same head, of course he is all ready whining for some of the Bear heads but I feel the Zwickey's will suite his setup better.
-
No bow for me this year. I'll be practicing my Half Nelson (full Nelson on black bear.) :knothead:
-
I'll have my 42# Abbott longbow and my Saluki longbow 55# , mfx 400 and axis 400 arrows . I have a bottle or two of purple hooch set aside for the hunt.
Jim , We could ride together and save some gas money if you and joe would like ? I would be glad to have ya along for the ride.
Nate : I'm drooling just thinking about last years meal you prepared , man I can't waite :0)

many are asking what to bring, in short the answer is just yourself and a BIG appetite. myself and my mother will supply anything you need and i know Toecutter is bringing a lot of food. i just want everyone to relax, hunt hard, have fun and enjoy each others company. this will be the first hunt for Horatio, his son and a frind of his, also Joes first offical archery hunt allthough he is a regular at Shawns bunny hunt. if anyone has anything that they think might help a first year hunter out please bring it for them. i am again very excited to see friends new and old!!! please send me a pm with any and all questions you have.

-
And a camera!
-
try again Nate!
-
I GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :jumper: :jumper: :jumper: :jumper: :jumper: :jumper:
-
that was the called shot!! the shot heard around the world. ya see folks Woodchucker stepped up to the line and proclaimed "Ya all see that dirty old chain yonder, well i'm going shoot the middle link thats hanging!" and by God he did!! :scared: hit the link that is! :readit:
-
Doesn't get any better guys...enjoy and please take lots of video and pictures :^).
I'll be in NY later in the month chasing the deer and coyotes.
-
Mike,
i am on vaction from October 18-Nov 9. when and where will you be hunting? i am an avid yote hunter.
-
ya see folks Woodchucker stepped up to the line and proclaimed "Ya all see that dirty old chain yonder, well i'm going shoot the middle link thats hanging!" and by God he did!! hit the link that is!
Hmmmm...not quite how I remember it, but alright...
 :bigsmyl:
-
Drew, sounds like a plan we can split the gas, not to mention that I can sight see for a change :bigsmyl: Just let me know what your plans are.
Jim
-
Hold the phone :scared: He's up to something I'll tell you that much :campfire: And another thing I thought chuck said once that he liked old bears but couldn't shoot them, it looks to me like he does pretty well with old Griz, if in fact that was the bow he used on the chain.
-
Mikey was on vacation, i'm sure he will step up (on a phone book) and chime in.
-
Mikey is always on vacation.
-
I'm gettin' better Jim!!!!! ;)
-
You Can Bet I'm Up To Somthin'! I'm working on getting some (more) time off from work so I can get up to this "Northern Zone Attack". I'd like to be there. I'd love to be there. I want to be there. Just gotta work it out. So for now it looks like a maybe.
Ken... I'll be at my place in the Catskills October 17 thru the 26th, give or take some. Got a few coyotes there.
... mike ...
-
Ken...Allegany county NY. I would trap too but the license is real expensive. Just got a .17 Rem Fireball that I need to break in on some fox and yotes.
-
I'll be using that beautiful saluki turk that I picked up from Drew last year(I love the hell out of that bow!!). I will also bring the Pronghorn LB(love the hell out of that one as well).
At the moment I'm tossing around the idea of using the treesharks or the "no mercy's" that came in today.
I shot the zwickeys today before work and they flew awesome(somehow better than field points!!) Though they flew great, my initial impression of the zwickeys construction was absolutely horrible, As sloppy as it gets. The grinds were uneven and just plain bad. The paint was even scraped off 2 of them in the package!
Like I said, they flew great though, and it wont be too hard to make them useable with my knife grinder and a file.
Figured I'd add a little review to my post since it was fresh in my mind. Hope you don't mind.
Also using AD tradlites.
Nathan

-
Jim : I'll let you know as we get closer but prolly leave work early and get started around 3pm . We can work things out as we get closer. Drew
-
looks like a pretty big crew, sure to be a great hunt. i will be scouting out more stand sites this weekend with Adirondackman. i do know that some people will be pretty close together as there is a great run that needs to be covered throughly. Jim and Joe will be hunting a total seperate ridge with a lot of turkeys in hopes of Joe getting a shot at a big ole gobbler. i know Nate has a score to settle with Ma Barker! hoe to find some good buck sign, Woodchucker saw a nice racked buck last year but was a little to far away. i would like to stay in the stands a little longer this time as long as the temp's don't get crazy. i had not planned on an evening hunt Saterday unless everyone really wants to or i could take those who want to and set them in their stands and come back in get them, its all up to you guys.
-
Drew, we can go as soon as Joe gets home from school, he gets home around 3.
-
ttt...
-
turkeys are fair game? I can't wait. :jumper:
-
good luck guys :campfire: and lots of pics
-
How many bows are you bringing?
-
Ken, are you in the two bird area?
-
Brian, Only need one..... ;)
Honestly though, I have never been a "back-up" type of guy.
For 6 years in the Marines,I carried an M-16.I took care of my rifle,it took care of me.If we ran out of ammo and got over run,I grabbed it by the barrel and it became a club.
As a part time Deputy Sheriff,I carried a .357 mag. I only carried my side arm no "back-up" gun.
When I hunted the "Big Woods" in Maine and the Adirondacks,I only carried my rifle. One year I decided to carry my .44 also. I had 3 pounds of dead weight on my hip for a week. After that the only time I carried it was if it was the ONLY gun I was carrying.
I only bring one bow on a hunting trip.....the one I'm going to hunt with :archer:
-
the dmu is 5J if you look on the map. it is a 2 bird area, hen or gobbler in the fall, there are MANY turkeys in this area, i have killed 3 long beards and 2 jakes on the shelf that Jim and Joe will be hunting. also a good chance to see a bear with this many people. i really need to expand my scouting this sunday so everyone will have enough space to relax and enjoy.
-
I got a new to me Mon River Venom in the mail today. Sweet shooter with those double cam limbs. Thought that if anybody wanted to try a new bow, I would bring it.
-
Ohhhhh.....You mean to SHOOT!!!!! :bigsmyl:
NICE BOW Brian, I'll give it a try!!!!!
(I'll probly still only bring one though, but LOTS of arrows)
-
You mean back up arrows??? I'm not bringing any back up arrows. I only need one!
-
Yup, I stepped right into THAT one LOL!!!!!
-
Sadly, I need more than 1 arrow...I need one for my deer I'll be taking, 1 for my bear I'll be taking, 1 for my turkey I'll be taking...etc...
 :bigsmyl:
-
One bow for me one bow for Joe, but a ton of arrows just in case. When I get a chance I'll post a pic of Joe's Grizzly. it's a sweet old bow. Hey Ken I like bears :bigsmyl:
-
i need everyone to post if they would like to be in a tree stand or on the ground so i have a better idea of set up. also if you have a climbet that you use please bring. by any chance does anyone have a lone wolf hang on as i would like to try one out before i shell out all the $$ for one.
-
I would like to bring 2 blinds for Ben and myself.
Brian
-
I'm gonna bring a climber, a blind and my ghillie, so if any one needs a climber or blind, I may just wear the ghillie.
Anyone have a feather cutter they might be willing to bring??
-
Gee Nathan, I think I got an old pair of scissors layin' around..... ;)
-
Kenny, You KNOW where I'm gonna be!!!!! :bigsmyl:
-
Good Luck you guys! All the best!
-
Chuck, only if they are those plastic crayola safety scissors! :readit:
-
Ken,
You know me. I have no interest to return to the ground anytime soon...
Nathan,
Which wing do you need the chopper in?
-
I have 2 birds worth of feathers(lt and rt). Anyone that shoots rw is welcome to them. I'M willing to share some of the lefts as well.
-
i will be doing A LOT of scouting tomorrow, is there anything in particular anyone wnats to see with pic's and video?
-
Anything!! I love it all!!
-
Tuna and shark tomorrow. Heard the tuna are pulling a no show but the mako's should be good. Wish me luck!!
-
good luck ma!! maybe the tuna will cooperate for ya, take pic's and send me a pm to let me know how you did. Woodchucker will be bringing a bunch of meat for ya to grill and my mother will be making a big turkey soup from a jake i took this May on the ridge we will be hunting.
-
I love the pics too!
-
I would love to get a preview of the area.
-
did a little 3d shooting and tree stand shooting with Bowspirit. on the way out of the field i saw the best shot of my life as i threw a small piece of foam in the air and Chris hit it first shot, dead nuts out of the air!! GREAT shot bro! :readit: :clapper:

-
Nate : I have a couple choppers I'll bring , bannana and raptor modified to A&A fletch.
Ken : You know me , I'll set up anyplace you want to put me , ground or tree. Drew
-
Man Ken, that first aerial shot was the best, most instictive shot I've ever felt. It was amazing! Must be all the practice on moving targets is paying off.
And thanks again for everything, but I really want to give a special thanks for the fedora. Been hankering for one for some time. I just know it's going to bring me a lot of mojo on the 3rd and 4th...
-
Those Fedora bows are built to pass down from generation to generation. If only some of those older bows could talk of their adventures over the years. :campfire: :archer:
-
Mike,
The hat, not the bow. Ken's already given me a Brackenbury, so I don't think I would have been able to accept the fedora if it was a bow...
-
Well... Looks like I'm gonna make this Northern Zone Attack! Hope you young fellas are ready to drag my deer. I'll be hunting from the ground, Asbell style using natural/mobile blinds and such. Put me in the heavy cover and my unwaxed dental floss wind string will guide me to victory! ;) Yea. That's it. And you thought this city boy was just a city boy. Well, He Is! Whatever...
Ya what to know something? Give me a minute. I'll come up with something yet...... Yea! Ken knows how I feel and what makes me tick when it comes to hunting. Don't ask him. Please don't ask him. Anyway.....
Looking foward to being with you guys again. Too much time between the JLMBH year to year. All you fellas need to know that I don't drink, go to bed early, snore like a chain saw, have gas attacks in the middle of the night but most of all... Want to say Thank You for the invite.
... mike ... :campfire: ...
-
Yee-haw! The woods will be running pink for sure, now!
Killdeer :wavey:
-
I've got a spot for ya Mike!!!!! Kenny knows where I mean,You'll have a foot deep runway 11 yards in front of you.(you can't SEE much farther than that LOL) Nice comfortable "natural"seat on top of a HUGE boulder covered with young hemlocks.
The first year I went up I had a deer snorting and blowing right behind me and I had a flock of Turkeys fly up to roost just up the mountain from there.
-
talk about a little MOJO!! John and me were doing a little scouting today and were looking for a good place for Horatio, son and friend. well we start walking down a good looking trail and we both were saying this looks like a great spot, perfect for a couple blinds. as we were talking i glanced over and what a suprise!! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/adkmountainken/buck1.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/adkmountainken/kbuck.jpg) this fella looks to be a young buck with a great set of horns for a young guy. John said exactly what i was thinking, you don't get a better sign then that!! :readit: great area, lots of beech and heavy used trail, Horation and crew will be set up fine here. we then scouted over where my trail cam is by a big oak and beech shelf. sign was abundent there and i had 11 pic's on the camera, not all came out well but looks like another big doe with little ones. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/adkmountainken/trail%20cam/2deer.jpg)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/adkmountainken/trail%20cam/hello.jpg)i plan to have around 5 people cover this large section as the deer are really in there well this year. made are way over to Chucks rock and the run ways are being well used, good one going right by the rock. the big suprise was high on the ridge as there were beech and cherries ALL OVER!! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/adkmountainken/tradgang/warbuck.jpg) i mean they are everywhere, great place for a guy to kill a slammer! made our way up to the mediciene tree and sign was everywhere as well. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/adkmountainken/tradgang/john.jpg)i love this stand, the view is great and very, very peacefull. it is a huge beech that has a big hole you can see through in the base. there is a steep rock ledge behing it and just under it as it is on a shelf, awesome spot. have you noticed how big the beech nuts are this year! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/adkmountainken/catbeech.jpg)as saw a slug the size of a grape fruit! finshed out the day by scouting the shelf where i want to put Jim and Joe, good sign there as well, set my trail cam up and will check it next week. it looks very promising, all conditions are right for a great hunt, i can't wait!!!
-
very peacefull on the mountain, love this place.

That spot looks great Ken! Man I love the 'dacks!
I can smell it from here.
Nice looking set up Joe! Should have no trouble finding that arrow.
Brian
-
Yea, especially if it's sticking out of a turkey
-
Nice looking bow and arrows there Joe!!!!!
Keep checking those cameras Brother!!!!! You haven't caught that "Big Guy" on film yet LOL.
MMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!! I can taste the backstraps already..... :bigsmyl:
-
Joe and I tested broadheads in his new setup last night, turns out that my 5/16 hill arrows cut to 28" BOP topped off with a 2 blade black diamond, fly like darts out of that thing. We even worked on shooting through mesh while sitting on a stool, were going to keep up the practice sessions so when the moment of truth arrives for Joe it will be old hat  :campfire:
-
The fella next door to me thinks I've got a screw lose. He watches me shoot in the yard all twisted around, through and under the bushes. But you guys know what it's all about. Don't Ya?
... mike ... :p ...
PS ... Can't Wait! ... ...
-
I know what its about but I still think you got a screw loose. At least one!!! :D
-
You comin' Izzy?
-
did you ever get that feeling when you knew something special was going to happen. like when its just getting light and you know there is a boss gobbler getting ready to sound off, your heart starts pounding and just then he lets rip GOBBBLLLLEEE GOOOOBLLLLEEE GOOOOBLLLEEE!! like when you have the perfect drift on a size 18 elk hair caddis and he can feel the strike coming before it happens and as you sense this you see the big rainbow slurp the fly down!!! well let me tell ya I FEEL IT, something BIG is going to happen. i say this becouse i have never saw the conditions more right on the mountain. beech nuts flooding the ledges, wild cheeries like i have never saw them before and a good mount of acorns. i can feel it man!
-
Ill be there Brian. For at least one day anyway. You going to the MHTA shoot this Staurday? This hunt is gonna be fun.Woodchucker,,,,, do you know a deer dance?
-
You guys are killing me. Every other second Im thinking about deer hunting...wish I could make this one.
Im heading out to skirmish with some tree rats tomorrow I think, just to get a fix. I need practice for when I see one of Chuck's black squirrels.
I will be thining about all of ya while you are out there. Good luck and shoot straight.
-
Woodchucker does a mean purple hooch dance! :coffee:
-
Ken, I think we need to end this thread right now!! :bigsmyl:
Drew, any type cutter you have will do
-
If I get any more pumped up for this hunt either my heart will explode, or I'm gonna take off with a war cry at the first deer I see!
I agree Nathan. Oh boy, do I ever agree...
-
i stand corrected on the turkey question. it is a 1 bird zone, 5j is the DMU. we will be able to take 1 turkey of either sex. just want to post again what will be open.
rabbit
grouse/pheseant
treeveal
coyote
deer
bear
-
The fella next door to me thinks I've got a screw lose. He watches me shoot in the yard all twisted around, through and under the bushes. But you guys know what it's all about. Don't Ya?
We certainly do Mike, when the moment comes your going to be the one that is ready to make the impossible shot
-
Hey Ken, are we gonna have a place to "play" with our bows before, during and/or after hunting? I gotta practizzze shootin' around corners. :p
... mike ...
PS ... Chuck can pick on me all he wants to cause he'll always beat me to the Star Vation Army and buy out all the wool sweaters in my size.
-
Yeah,Yeah..... Incredible Shots..... Blah,Blah,Blah.....
But can he DANCE?????????? :bigsmyl:
-
i need a little in put fellas. i was thinking about getting in the woods early saterday morning and sitting untill 1 or 2. planned on taking the afternoon hunt off so we could all relax, eat a lot, shoot or bows and shoot the bull. planned on doing the same Sunday and not hunting the afternoon. what would you all rather do, go with this idea or make a shorter saterday morning hunt and hunt the afternoon as well? a sunday afternoon hunt is not possible for me so we will definitly be sitting untill 1 or 2 that day. what do ya say?
-
Whatever you think is best Ken. My only plan is to stretch the strings (fast flight and hamstring that is ;) ), spin a few tales, have a few adult beverages, and serve some grub to some real ugly mugs. What order it happens in is of no consequence to me.
If pressed, I may have a thought or two(when the stars align just right)on the subject, but I'll wait and see what the group says.
Very soon,
Nathan
-
I'm up for spending the afternoon shootin' bull and catching up with some old friends...
-
Got yourself a great idea Ken! It would be nice to hunt early and kinda take the late day off. This way we could spend some time shootin' the breeze, and relaxin'. :campfire:
... mike ...

You ain't snow dancin are ya :readit: :campfire:

Ken, sounds like a good plan  Tom I'll give you a call also Joe and I will be at the trophy shoot.
-
I won't be at the trophy shoot myself hopefully I'll be shooting live 3D targets
-
many questions on what needs to be brought as far as food and such. the short answer is its taken care of, much food and drink, just bring yourselves. i have asked a few people to brings some things and we are all set. i want everyone to hunt hard, kick back and relax for a small mini vacation!
-
ok i do have a request on something to bring. i had been thinking about this but was not sure if everyone would mind. i will have 2 boxes, if you could bring a small item for each box it would be great. Mr. Vic is a brother to me and has helped me out understanding a lot. there is also another really special person who has greatly affected many on Tradgang, don't want to mention the name as i want it to be a suprise! though neither can make it i want them to be included in this hunt every year untill they can come. the item can be anything you want to give big or small, anything at all, maybe something you find on the hunt, maybe something you can make, dosen't matter i just want to do this for these two every year. if ya have questions as to who the other person is just pm me and i'll tell ya. is this ok with everyone?
-
Can do!
Brian
-
Yes, yes, Can Do, Will Do.
-
Ihave a couple very special things that I will bring up for My Brother Vic and the other "un-named" person. (and I have a VERY good idea who it is BTW) ;)
I'm gonna have a little trouble juggling saturday morning.I have a vacation to cover friday night untill midnight.(I'm planning on being "sick" sat and sun, then I have monday and tuesday off)
I'll probly go home friday night, pack the truck, sleep a few hours, and head up. I can find Mother Mowrey's, then if I can find my way over to the bottom of the mountain,I'll head for the top alittle after daybreak.I'll take my time hunting up the mountain and maybe I'll push something to one of you guys.I'll have a seat on my rock on the mountaintop, and Kenny will know where to find me when it's time to head down.On the way down, maybe we'll push something to one of you guys.....
I can't WAIT!!!!! THIS IS GONNA BE GREAT!!!!!!!!!!
:campfire: :archer: :archer: :archer:
-
Man who cares about Obama and McCain when I've got this thread to read. I love those pictures Ken and the sound of the water clip.

well fellas ole Darth Curmudgeon had beaten me to the punch. it must be her sixth sense and she pulled the Jedi mind trick on us! you see, Killdeer was the other person i want to send a suprise box to so she could be part of our hunt. i get the mail today and what do i find??? yup a box of treasure and trinkets from the curmudgen herself, like she knew what we were up to and beat us to the punch! i just wanted to get this out there to show that WE had the idea first but she beat us!! great stuff for all from Killy!!!
-
So, she didn't UPS it, eh?

Killdeer :biglaugh:
-
carefull what ya ask for Killy! i auctually offered to give it to a good friend to make knife handles but he is to scared to cut the horns!
-
He is magnificent as he is, where he is. You don't chop him to pieces to make knives.
Killdeer
-
I can honestly say that I have seen Kenny's mount in person.
I was up there a couple years ago with Jim Calkins (jcsnapshot) and the 3 of us took a ride to the "Adirondack Sport Shop" where it was hanging on display.I was standing 20 feet from it and I couldn't believe my eyes!!!!!It was the HUGEST Buck I have ever seen!!!!! It hung on a wall with several other Big Buck mounts and it was easily twice the size of any other rack there. I look forward to being able to see it "up close and personal".....Can you say MOJO!!!!!
My Brother, I know how you feel, and I respect your feelings.....But that "Grand Old Stag" deserves to hang in a place of Honor.....and there's no better place than "Mother Mowrey's" house.
See ya SOON!!!!!
:campfire: :archer: :archer: :archer:
-
Somethin like that would force me to use my tag a bit early LOL
I actually planned on bringing Killdeer along with Bernie for this hunt if only in spirt.Bernie's been a tag along for a bit and I got an arrow from Killy at the bunny hunt so now they can kinda hunt together
-
Hmmmmm,Now that you mention it Tom.....
I too, have one of Killy's arrows hanging in a place of Honor in my "man cave".
It just might be the "big medicine" I need for those Black Squirrels.....I think I'll "bring her along"!!!!! :archer:
-
she is with me EVERY hunt and outing. :readit: :campfire:
-
Ken, I can't believe you took that deer away from it's mommy  I been working on arrows and filing broadheads dreaming about hunting in a different area than I have ever been, and having Joe by my side.

Wow hadn't checked this in a few days. Sure wish I was headed to NY a few days earlier than I am so my son and I could drive over from Fort Drum and join in on the fun.
Just reading this has me pumped about my 1st opportunity to roam those New York woods longbow in hand. If the area my son has picked out for us is half as pretty as those posted pictures it will be a memory of a lifetime.

Killdeer :D
-
Killy,
in 2 weeks on the trail cam i have over 30 pic's of mamma's and young! seems like an extrodinary amount of young this year. i know with the other animals the weather has them alllll messed up! just last week i saw thrkeys with just hatches ( a couple weeks old maybe ) young and geese with little fuzzy ones, that should not be going on this time of year right???
-
I know that turkey will keep laying untill they have a clutch that survives (i.e. coons destroying the nest and eating all the eggs)and a December bred doe will have fawns with spots right up to hunting season. not sure about the rest though.....
-
Great shooting there, Ken. Man, I can already taste that sweet, sweet venison...and I know someone is going to be spilling game blood on that mountain...
-
Bring your dragging ropes men. With all the sign, mast and pictures of deer that keep showing up on the trail cam your going to need them. Ken, Thank You for putting a hunt like this together. See you guys on the mountain.
-
Drag :scared: :scared: LOL
Guess that means we won't cut them up on the spot
-
Thanks to you John also for all you have done!
Brian
-
John, my people prefer to set up camp around the carcass and to stay till it is gone.
Thanks again for all your hard work!!
Drew, are you bringing the camper again??

I don't think they'll even be on the ground. From what Ken told me the last time I was up there, the deer are just polishing off every nut that hits the ground...
-
Well then it looks like they'll be sitting at the dinner table waiting for us.....

Ken, I managed to get my dad to come along. Can only make 1 day though, so I need to figure out tommarrow which one will be best....

John (Adirondackman) will be able to meet anyone that gets here early Friday and show them to my mothers. THANKS John!!!
-
Okay guys, 3 of us are coming for our first hunt. Me, my 15 year old son, Ben and my apprentice and friend EJ. We need help putting a list together of the things that we should bring for the hunt. What kind of snacks for inside the blind, etc.,the things that we aren't going to think of. Thanks
Brian
-
Ken, I was thinking of hunting the morning, maybe till 11, then coming out and doing some cooking till everyone gets out of the woods. Figure we can all eat, shoot the bow/bull, after that, I was thinking of heading out again to hunt the evening. Sounds like Shawn and maybe a few others might be amicable to the Idea. If that works, let me know.
Drew, congrats on the camper!! If you still have room, I'd like to sleep outside again.
-
Nate,
sounds good. i'm sure a few more will want to hunt the evening. i think the evening is auctually a better hunt but i love the mornings! i still have to show you a good place for a float hunt and i believe i have a great spot.
-
I like the idea of both morning and afternoon hunts with the BS session in between :campfire: :jumper:
-
Thanks Ken, but the way things are shaping up, I'm not sure If I'm gonna be able to find time to fit it in this year. I will bend your ear on the subject during the "BS" portion of our hunt. :D
-
It's getting close My Friends and Brothers!!!!!
The temperature is dropping, and the wind carries the smell of Fall.....
While the early morning chill, brings with it the shiver of the thrill of The Hunt!!!!!

Recurve? Longbow? Woodies? 2016's? Leather Boots? Rubber Boots? Keep It Simple? Yea, Right!
... mike ... :D ...
-
Old Bear recurves check, arrows with sharp thing attached check, enough gear for 10 guys check, were almost ready
-
i wish i had taken a picture of the rub that Bowspirit and i found saterday. it was a BIG rub and you could see where antler hit the back side of the tree indicating a racked buck, it had just been made that morning, you could still smell the shavings!
I had planned on hunting Saterday morning but now calling for HEAVY rain so going to the tattoist instead to get FOREVER WILD down my spine!
-
Is that rub anywhere near where my blind is going to be? I'm thinking maybe I should start out small... nahhh!
Met Adirondackman today. He stopped to pick up my blinds. Ken is nice enough to set them up early for us. A couple of great guys. I couldn't ask for a better first hunt. It's already a success and I don't even have the truck loaded yet! Thanks guys! :campfire: :archer: :archer:
-
Ken you would be farther ahead to put on a poncho and tattoo a deer with a good sharp broadhead
-
don't get me wrong i will not miss opening day for nothing just don't think i'm hitting it in the morning. i am anxious to see if the bears have started moving and feeding on the cheeries yet. also want to get a good picture of the rub.
-
Brian - glad to meet you and enjoyed talking with you about the hunting trip. Ken has you set up in a good spot. We found that racked deer skull there. It will be a great first hunt. Good friends, good food and a good hunting spot.
-
ttt
-
i'll have new trail cam pic's for ya tomorrow, hopefully Chucks buck made an apperance!
-
Don't worry Ken....Chucks more excited about getting a shot off at a black squirrel...
He also stated any turkeys that come by he'll try to push towards Stone Knifes son....I'd pay $10 to see the Woodchucker pushing a flock of turkeys towards Joe...Do ya think he can keep up with them?? LOL
-
so many turkeys this year i would be very suprised if a 3 or 4 people don't get shots at them. MANY young ones, the sight of ole Chucker might just scare the youngins stone dead!
-
I'll chase them turkeys all over that mountain, just you watch me!!!!!
Now I'm not much for "taxidermy" mounts.....I have one mounted deer head and it's not even in my house(it's at my Dad's)the rest I just hang the horns on the wall, but if I whack one of them Black Squirrels the little bugger's gettin' mounted on a piece of chunk wood!!!!!
-
ok bro, black squrriel rock or buck rock, where ya want to be????
-
Hey Ken! Dosen't Chuck look like the Turkey Float in Macys' Thanksgiving Day Parade? :scared: I'd think THAT would scare the peanuts out of 'em!
... mike ... ;) ...
-
The "Top Of The Mountain" Brother!!!!!
-
Now were really getting pumped, we would love to shoot a couple of those buzzards
-
talk about pumped I'M HUNTING DEER TOMORROW AND I KNOW THERE IS A NICE BUCK THERE, as Shawn would say OOOOOWWWWHHHHHH YEEEEEEAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

I'll go to the top like I always do!!!!!
-
good morning hunters!!!! just getting ready to go hunting. Bowspirit will be with me today as well. can't wait to be in that stand this morning!! bloods are pumping and heart beating like i had 100 cups of high test coffee!!
-
Good luck Ken, see you in a week.
-
Good Luck My Brothers!!!!! :archer: :archer:
-
great hunt today, hot as all hell but great hunt. brother coyote sang to us on and off in the morning as well as a couple owls and hawks. i worked up a sweat getting to my stand let me tell ya! got settled down, relaxed and nocked and arrow. was just starting to breathe normal again from the hike and i look up to see a BIG deer workin its way towards me! i was thinking holy cow here comes Chucks buck as it was BIIIIIG! as it got closer i could see it was an extremly large doe with 2 more doe behind it. they were walkiing right towards me. with fingers tight to string i was thinking man the will be about 5 yards when they pass through, about the time i was thinking that the ole fat lady took a sharp right with the other to in tow, dam!! tails were flickering as they walked, not scared just happened to rake another trail. this was all at around 25-35 yards which is out of my comfort zone. as they walked away i got to see the last doe turn and bleat, what a sight!!! 3 adult does, bow in hand, hunting with a good friend on my favorite mountain, that is what its all about!
Only a few pic's on the trail cam but here is one for Joe. Joe meet Jake.
-
I'm not going to be able to get any work done this week. I feel like a 7 year old the week before Christmas. I'm even trying to be extra nice!
I can smell those leaves! The anticipation is harder than I expected.
A friend of mine just offered to let me hunt on his property here locally. A primo spot. I now have about 130 acres in 2 different spots within 5 minutes of my house to hunt. If anybody wants to come this way, let me know. There is lots of abandoned farm land around here. We have loads of deer.
-
Man ' I got lots of work to do , put tires on camper , check wheel bearrings , inspection , install heater. I best get at it or i'll be down to the last minute with her. Great story Ken , wish I was there now:0) Drew
-
Nice story great bird, Drew we will have to get in touch this week for sure. I will be busy this week with my Mom but we will make the hunt for sure. I sure hope that turkey wants to pose like that at about 10 paces for Joe, I told him he cant hit a bull in the butt with a snow shovel :bigsmyl: but I think he would make that shot
-
Ken - sounds like you and Chris had a great day in the woods. Wish that I could have made it. Really looking forward to this weekend.

-
Well so much for me hanging around and shooting the BS :readit: Now were going to have to be careful what we say :bigsmyl:
-
3'8" beats WAYSIAH, but both of their hearts are mountains. Shoot the bull, shoot the ship, but don't use anything but a snow shovel on ol' Chris!
That is one fine assemblage of archers who will be all in a bunch, I wish I could be a fly on the wall and a raven in the woods!
Killdeer :wavey:
-
Well, lookie here...I'm gone from the site for a day, and already I have yet a new nickname. Ah well, such is life. And feel free to shoot the BS guys...just gonna need 1000-grain arrows and single bevel heads to do so...
 :bigsmyl:
-
well look what the cat spit up, errrr i mean dragged in! thought maybe you were stuck in frog muck again!
-
You get a lot of nicknames, Chris?
BTW, you need to update your pic in your profile. I'll see if Rob will let me take care of that if you don't want to get on it right away. :readit: :D
Frog muck. :biglaugh:

Killy we plan on sending you a box of Adirondack cheer every year untill ya can drag yer arse up here and hunt with us! :readit:

Well, let's see...just 3 so far killdeer. Domestic Death, Kermit, and now BS...all in all, I'm pretty fond of 'em...
-
I think Aquaman was another good one :readit:
-
Worlds Hairiest Mermaid just came to mind. Anyone can feel free to add just about any adjective to that mix. A few more already coming to me... :D
-
Glad to see ya' putting that college education to good use, Nathan...
-
Actualy.....Being the "ground hound" that I am,I like hunting with Chris.
He stands at least a full head taller than I do. After I spend a few minutes looking around, scanning the woods for a twitch of a tail or the flick of an ear. I look up at him and say.....
See anything????? ;)
-
"Just the top of your head," replied Swamp Thing, absently scratching his ear. "I doubt we'll see much before daylight, and we get out of the parking lot and into the woods."
Killdeer :biglaugh:
-
Oh, how I forgot Swamp Thing... :bigsmyl:
-
My, my, my..... What am I in for this wekend? You guys are gonna be a tough bunch.
... mike ...
-
LMAO. Domestic Death????? Thats the best dang nick name I ever heard of.
-
Domestic Death, if it ain't got a collor on it, its got an arrow in it!!!
-
I wonder if Chris has to wear a safety harness when he is just walking around :biglaugh:
-
I have my little gift package stowed away, I wonder who it's for
-
Ken, call the neighbors and have em put up all their livestock that they dont want to part with otherwise DD will be posing for a hero pic with the goat from down the road.Sorry Chris couldnt resist pal.Looks like Ill be there for the BS session and not the hunting.I have to work until at least 11 on Saturday and then I plan on heading over with my son Noah if all goes well.Til then be safe and enjoy those Dacks and each others company.

ok now if anyone needs John (Adirondackman) or me to meet them at exit 28 from the through way and lead them to my mothers house please let us know. John will be able to help you earlier then me, i will not be able to meet anyone untill 8-8:30. i can also add easy, explicit directions. as you get closer to my mothers house there will be NO cell reception. her #is 518-762-8953. my cell # is 518-848-0119.
-
A couple a Fuentes and a beer which I swear has a buck on the cap.Your living too good Killie.
-
as you get closer to my mothers house there will be NO cell reception.
But I have the Network
-
fron exit 28 take a left on to Riverside drive, go 100 yards to the light. take a right across the bridge. take a right at the light. take your first left on to cemetery road. from here there are NO MORE turns untill my mothers road. go up cemetery road, you will cross Old Trail road. cemetery road name cheanges to South Melcher Extesion. there are absolutly no turns just many roads you will cross. at the end of South Melcher Extension there will be a stop sign by a main road (Comrie) cross road, Extension turns in to South Melcher. take this untill the end which is a stop sign. take a left on to State Route 29. you will go about 12 miles and enter Rockwood. take a right on to Church Road, my mothers is the last house on the left. Church road is the road just before the bridge, there is only one bridge in Rockwood, population around 150 people, give or take 10 depending on winter kill! :readit:
-

CLAMS!!! Who wants them!!! In all seriousness I need a rough head count and a rough Idea of how many like clams. I am going to be picking them up in the morning before I get on the road.
I'm thinking I'm gonna do clams and a local spicy sausage (chourico) steamed in beer and garlic on fri night. Seems like we will all be arriving at different times, and it will be a good snack/meal for the BS (not chris) session. Venison marsala over wild rice on sat night, and Pulled venison and moose barbecue on sun afternoon/night. I was just gonna pick up a few dozen portuguese rolls for the bbq so you guys fill in the blanks as far as other things you might want, snacks, desserts, beer, and beer snacks. Oh yeah, I have two fresh growlers of Buzzards bay brewery suds (can you say 8% by volume :scared: :goldtooth: :jumper: ).
-
Dude, I used to live right across the canal from Buzzards Bay! That stuff is awesome...Now Im really bummed that I have to work. Clams too....you are killing me. Good luck guys!! Even you Chris....er....BS......er DD.....whatever they call you now. :saywhat:
-

-
Just got off the phone with our customer and I gotta start over so I guess I'm out :campfire:
-
Chuck, I'll do my best to keep some aside for you. If it gets to me either giving up your clams or giving up my life...well then, I guess I lived a full life. Just make sure you REALLY enjoy those clams, and remember to sing songs around the campfire detailing my exploits while settling the frontier.
John, see you on the bridge with the banjo around 2.
See you all soon!!!
-
Sorry to hear that Tom, I was looking forward to meeting you. Tell that customer that more important things came up! You won't be lying.

Clams? No clams for me, thanks. Clams kinda remind me of snot in an ash tray. All the other stuff sounds real good. That's if ya let me eat with you fellas. See, I ain't took a shower in a week. Then don't that fit in with you Mountain Men? :p Whatever.....

Aram again:
I rubbed noses with a doe this morning... well, OK, it was more like 12 yards but it sure was fun to watch it come undone. That was the only deer sighting. Lots of sign though... Some shots on turkey... lots of grouse flused... porcupine visits.. etc. I'm sure more stories will follow. Gotta run, duty calls... it's rough here you know. :p

So its my first hunt. Ever. I couldn't have been with a greater bunch of people. So helpful that I felt guilty for not having done any of the work. We went out yesterday and it was uneventful. The woods were wet from on and off rain so things were pretty quiet except for the noisy red squirrel. So we went back to the house for great food(Toecutter) and Christmas in October from Drewsbow. After a couple of cold ones and a good night sleep. We got up and tried again. I really didn't think I would see much after yesterday. We kinda had trouble finding our blinds, so I figured we ran all the deer off. I wasn't in my blind for maybe 45 minutes when I hear a rustle in the leaves and 2 does come up over the ridge 13 yards away right in front of me.The first one was big. Mighta been the one with the funny ear but I was too excited to notice. She looked at me and went about her business. The smaller deer watched me nervously for what I think was 3 or 4 minutes. Nose in the air trying to get a whiff. Meanwhile I'm watching the big one out of the corner of my eye. She walks behind a big pine, still at 13 yards clear shot.I'm not sure if the other deer can see me at all in the blind. I'm a new hunter. I know now that it couldn't see me . The big deer comes out from behind the tree. I can see the first 2/3 of her body. She stops and puts her head down to eat some acorns. The perfect shot! I pick a spot. I don't draw back because the other doe is still nervously watching me. She almost looks like she wants to come closer. I can hear the big doe chewing the acorns and it walks out of my view. The nervous deer quartered away and past in front of my blind at about 25 yards. I didn't take the shot that I've been practicing for for 2 months straight. It happened just like I envisioned. I don't regret not taking it. There will be other shots. I promised myself that I would not shoot unless I was sure and I wasn't. Now I am. What a rush! I absolutely loved it. It was the best time. Thanks to everybody! There wasn't a bad second in the whole weekend. My son had a ball.
My buddy EJ shot a squirrel. He is going to be quite the hunter I think. Thanks to Mother Mowery for her hospitality. I can't really express my appreciation and how much fun I really had. Thanks guys for allowing a couple of newbies into the fold. You guys are great!
Brian (http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z267/horatio1226/ADIRONDACKATTACK007.jpg)
-
Brian it sounds great but remember ya can't kill them if ya don't put an arrow in the air. Take or at least try to take that 13 yard shot, ya never know! shawn
-
Ohhh I'll take it next time bro!
-
i had an absolulty GREAT time with everyone! i am a lone hunter by nature or hunt with one other person at most but its times like these when ya run through the mountains with brothers of the bow that are so very special. sons and fathers, first time hunters, nrw friends and old, i would not trade it for the world! very tires tonight but i will be posting pic's and stories all week. thank you to everyone that came, i am a rich man to have friends like this!! i have 2 pic's that to me sum up this weekend.

Bowspirit on Ken's login;
And then there was one. I was fortunate enough to land a 4 day weekend from work, so I'm the only guy still here at Dack Attack HQ. Even Ken's gone home. Figure I'll head out to the target tommarrow and get in an hour or so of practice, then head out for one final afternoon sit. Wish me luck fella's, even though it won't be the same without any of you all here...
-
Go get em Chris. Shoot staright!
Nice pics Ken
-
Good luck Chris.Really regret having missed this one.Brian,,,, that shot you didnt take didnt feel right to you so you didnt take it and thats all that matters.Sometimes the good part is just gettin close enough to hear em breathe, like at 13 yards! You hunted and had fun and thats what its about.
-
Chris, we will be with you in spirit. Ken thank you so much for letting Joe and me hang out with you guy's we had a blast. You have a great mother, she treated all of us like family we felt at home the whole time, she even found out about Joe's love for pickles and brought him back a giant one, now she has a friend for life. Your hunting spot is great it wont take to many trips there to get on to some deer. Before the house was out of sight Joe was asking me if we were coming back next year, that will be a for sure hunt.
-
Thank You All For A Great Time! What a cool bunch of guys. Count me in for the next Dack Attack. A special "Thank You" to Kens mom. Wonderful woman would be an under statement. This weekend was well worth the 200 mile (one way) trip.
... mike ...
PS ... Good Luck on Monday B.S.! ;)
-
Izzy is %100 right! ya got to go with whay ya feel. as you hunt more you will learn more and in time you will know when and where to pick your shot.
Maybe Brian, Ben and EJ might now have a lot of confidenec in themselves as they are knew to the game but let me tell ya something and let it sink in. this was the first hunt for all three of you. Brian had 2 deer at 12 yards, Ben had them around 25 yards and EJ killed game and also saw a doe all in the FIRST TIME OUT!!! that is when hell of a GREAT start brothers!!! you learn from experiance which coes from MANY, MANY times afield which MOST OFTEN game is not even encountered, you 3 are ahead of the game in the learning curve. keep at it guys and keep in m ind i have killed as many deer with a bow as you, NONE!!! we are on the same playing field.
-
another fav pic of mine. Jim and John leaving the mountain.

You are right Ken. Learned alot. Confidence is high. Can't wait to get back out. Only a couple days til our season opens up.
Wish you were there Izzy. Hopefully see you at MHTA now that Little League is over. Love those night shoots in the barn.
-
Ken - Thanks for hosting this hunt again this year. I look forward to it every year. Give Mom a big thanks also. I also do most of my hunting alone but this group of guys are very special to share the woods with. I think that most people that hunt with Traditional equipment share a love and respect for the animals and the woods and all of these guys definetly fall into that category. I would enjoy hunting with all of you again. Thanks guys for making the Adirondack Attack #3 so special.
-
You have that right John. I also dig hunting alone most of the time. But when a group such as this one gets together it's... Well... Just plain fun!
Already looking foward to the next time. That mountain has alot to offer a crumb like me.

:biglaugh: That mountain knows you well Mike...
The trail is pretty steep and in the dark, first time out this season, it was a rude awakening to most of us. I tried my best to keep up and not breathe too heavy and promised myself to get younger and in better shape. The young ones seemed to have no problem... and then there was John. Seeing him run up the mountain (literally) I was sure he was somehow going to get an elk.
First morning we were supposed to meet at 11:00 to head back to the cars. Ru and John appeared from the immense wilderness right on time. Then this character appeared with his sweaty undershirt in one hand and his bow in the other. We strained our eyes and it took us a few seconds to recognize him. Mike?!?
We learned that not having a watch Mike headed back and got to the trucks an hour early, then, not wanting to leave us looking for him, ran right back up the mountain. I could have sworn it wasn't just the "makeup" that made him look thinner and strangely, even taller. :) What a guy!
-
John most of the time I'm a loner when it comes to hunting, but now I have my son for a partner and I like to get together with the caliber of people that we had at this hunt. Thanks for showing us wannabe mountain hunters around

Hey Chris,

-
Thanks again Ken for a great hunt and great group of people to hunt with  :clapper: Thanks to Mom also for putting up with us. I had a great time and look forward to this each year and I know Adam had a blast also and wants to go back again. I had a small flock of turkeys come by my stand and got a shot off but missed a longbeard , shot under him but it still got me pumped. I later called in a very large bird but decided not to shoot as I wasn't sure if I had a tag for him :0) Drew
-
yeah brother who would cook the cook ifin ya got him??????

now brothers and sisters i want to show you a picture that is simply AMAZING! some people have great hand/eye cordination and some have unreal concentration. this next picture will show a "Zen" like mind over matter mastery that only Ninja warriors, Buddhist monks and Chuck Nelson posses!!! i watched for one whole hour as brother Chuck did the head snap, snore and body wobble without dropping his beer all while sound asleep!!!

Braggin bout what?? Lets see...A)that his real nickname is "Stallion"...B) He saw a buck with a rack "this wide"...C)Thats how far he stillhunted in 6 hrs...D)Thats how far the deer was from him when he missed....
C'mon Killy...need you to take the muliple choice test....
-
would ya believe this time Chuck blames Killdeer for not killing a black squrriel?????? i'm not kidding he said it was without a doubt her fault as he had the black villian dead to rights and then......, i will let him tell it.
-
Mikey kept us up all night with his snoring, Joe told him he sounded like a generator running. The thing is we were told we could sleep in the bedroom but nooooooooo! we just had to sleep in the same room as our buddy, we should have brought the shooting muffs. I'm still saving my pennies mike so I can pay you to take that Grizzly back :bigsmyl: Just got done waxing it for you buddy.
-
also congrats to EJ on a great shot and fine trophy. remember this is his first time EVER hunting and he chose stick and string! how many of us can say we made our first ever kill with traditional archery???

Man, it was sure great to see EJ come storlling down the path with that little guy by the tail. Puts a smile on my face just thinking about it...

I can't retell on this family site the excitement some got when they saw my sheep skin again. :saywhat:
But I do know who Mike likes. He proudly showed me a picture he carries in his wallet of his beautiful bride. It brought a tear to my eye: so much beauty to be burdened with blindness! Oh, the cruelty of it all :(

"The Day The Black Squirrel Almost Died"
On Sunday morning, our group of TradGangers assembledat the base of the mountain.John would take one group,Ken would take another.Waysiah and The Woodchucker would wait untill daybreak and then stillhunt thier way to the top of the mountain.
Around daybreak,Mike decided that he had some unfinished "business" back at the house.I told Mike that I'd see him later, and I headed up the mountain.....
I'm not "old" but I am older.I'm not "outa shape" but I'm not in the best of shape.....My hips and my knees are pretty well shot,I haven't broken a leg hunting in over 30 years, and I don't plan on doing it in the next 30 either!!!Slow and steady, sets the pace, and wins the race.
I picked my way up the mountain. While doing so I savor every breath of mountain air.I carefully place every foot and enjoy every step.As I hunted to the top, about half way up I met Chris with his trophy.I listened to him tell his story and I was Honored to be able to shared his success. As Chris headed down the mountain with his trophy,I started again for "Black Squirrel Heaven" at the top of the mountain.
When I reached the top of the mountain,I took off my back quiver and leaned it against the tree. Then I took off my possibles bag,and layed it on a rock. Then I took out a cedar arrow made by my very Good Friend Joe Skipp, and tipped with a Bear Razorhead. The other arrow is also a very special one,it was one of the arrows that was made by Killdeer for the Joan Leonard Memorial Bunny Hunt. This arrow was given to me by Killy at the St.Judes raffle. This arrow is "Big Medicine" and it was with this arrow that I was going to kill the Black Squirrel.
I took the Razorhead tipped arrow and I nocked it on the string of Old Grizz. Then,I took the arrow that Killy made, and layed it atop my possibles bag.Sometime later,I heard a rustling behind me.I turned around and running for a tree was a Black Squirrel!!!!! As he reached the base of a Hemlock I drew back Old Grizz.....My middle finger touched the corner of my mouth.and I see the broad head. NUTS!!!!! I wanted to use Killy's arrow to kill the Black Squirrel.I eased the string down on Old Grizz, and took the Razorhead tipped arrow off the sting. Then I swapped it for Killy's arrow, and then I nocked it on Old Grizz' string.I started to draw Old Grizz as I looked back to the Hemlock, but alas.....The Black Squirrel was gone!!!!!
So yes, you see.....It was kinda Killy's "fault" that I didn't kill the Black Squirrel.
But Killy it was a pleasure, and an honor to have you with me on my hunt :notworthy:
-
I have a squirrel story, Joe and I were sitting in the blind on Sat. morning watching the woods come to life, then after Joe proceeded to eat his lunch and mine also, he decided that it was time to look for some squirrels. I had looked out the back of the blind and saw a few running around so we got out then headed up the hill to see if we could get some shooting. Joe was messing around trying to shoot some chipmunks and red squirrels, while this was going on I spotted a nice grey at about 25 yards, I drew back and let one fly at it, dang! just a tad low I had hit were his feet touched the ground. Joe asked me what did you shoot at, I told him a squirrel so he headed over in that direction. Next thing I know Joe is at full draw and lets one sail, then yells I hit it in the chest, all of a sudden this squirrel is scolding us like I never heard one do in all the years I have been hunting. He had a blunt on his arrow and I know how tough those little buggers are but I was Leary about him wandering around with any exposed broadheads so he was only allowed blunts when we were walking around. I told him next time hit it in the head but another opportunity didn't come, but we'll be back to those mountains and Joe will have his revenge.

To me, that 1st pic of WAYSIAH looks like hes practicing for his upcoming crucifiction. What did he do to deserve such a thing?

SLACS = S.L.A.C.S. = "Snores Like A Chain Saw!" Simple ain't it? Can you say "Duhhh!"
I don't have any stories about this hunt. Guess I was too busy runin' up and down that mountain. Nice mix of cover and pines, oaks, the works! Did my homework and scouted for two days. Next year I'll be ready and up there all day. Oh yea.... I just might wear a watch then too.
... mike ... :p

Chuckster, either take broadheads, or take blunts. Don't carry both. I have worn out more servings swapping back and forth! Besides, you should have known that MY arrow would have called in the first critter!

Next year Killy!!!!!
If there is one thing that I have learned from 3 years of chasing the elusive Black Squirrel.....
You'll NEVER get a second chance!!!!! :banghead:
Next year Killy's arrow gets ALL the string time :archer:

i will tell you i was very inpressed with the woodsmanship of Aram and Ru. John brought them to the top of the mountain Saterday morning and showed them where to go. as we were starting up Saterday afternoon Aram said that he and Ru could find their own way and up they went! not only did Aram pick up on the lay of the land but he saw and was close to deer both days! i was impressed!

Not much left to say about this past weekend and all the good friends that were made that hasn't been said already. To synopsize, I was lucky enough to be invited to this little shin-dig last year, and was promptly taken into this circle of close-knit friends and brothers.
This year the circle was made larger and the memories were built upon. Each year I come away a little richer. Thanks to Ken and Mother Mowery, and thanks to all that attended. I truly had a "time of my life".
In closing, Drew, leave the poor "turkey's" be, they have a hard enough time as it is!!
Will post a pic or two when I can.

"SUCK" awesome skills :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Not sure if I should be offended :D

I kind of hate to say this, but if you guys actually hunted just the deer ya may have killed one. I know all the other wildlife is tempting but it does not lend itself to killing deer. Fun for sure but ya make it hard on yourselves! shawn
-
whoops, been dipping in to the purple hooch that santa Drew left at gthe house!
-
Shawn,
you are right but it is so few and far between that we all get together like this that having fun prevails over "hard core" hunting. anytime you move this many people up a mountain the deer are going to know with out a doubt something is up. we did see i think 8-10 deer in the 2 days which is pretty good. i know to d it right we need more then 2 days and we need to hunt differently but as we only had the weekend it was kind of laid back. as many have said most of us are solo hunters so this kind of group was auctually a shock to the sysetm and had to be hunted differently then normal. i would change a thing about this hunt, i loved it!
-
I love the pictures guys...thanks for posting them...does the soul good.
-
Were we supposed to kill a deer? What we experienced was way beyond killing a deer. We will have many more opportunities to do that. To have the experience that I had this past weekend was way beyond killing a deer, for me and mine anyway. :bigsmyl:  :campfire: :archer:

Wow...what a crew! Looks like there were good time had by all. Thanks for sharing.

As I grow older, it gets easier to do: just blur your eyes to get past their appearance. These are some of the finest, most caring people you would ever be privileged to meet.
Love the pics, love the stories, guys.
Aram...I love your sheep. I gotta sew two of mine together to make one of yours!
Killdeer~ Nothing in the world is as fine as having two sheep in your sleeping bag when the November storms come howling through the woods!

It would have been nice to kill a deer, but it would have been better to see my son get his first trad kill, so we focused more on squirrels and fun, we didn't get a squirrel but we sure had a lot of fun. All these places that we go are going to build good memories for Joe that will be there long after he has lost count of the number of animals that were taken. Nathan was more like a camp chef that just a plain old cook, those were some of the best viddles I have ever had, even though he wasn't to happy with us for eating all the bacon up and half of the moose before he had a chance to prepare it right :bigsmyl:

ok Drew, now tell us the story how you suduced the camp cook! :bigsmyl:
-
What????? Drew seduced the camp cook????
Hmmmmm.....Maybe THAT was why Nathan calmed down so quickly after half of the "meat" dissapeared at lunch time.....

Not only did I have a great time. I ate good. REAL GOOD! I also got the opportunity to shoot a few bows that I never shot before. Here's one that Drew had that seemed to like me. It is a 62"and 65#@28 Saluki longbow. 3 bamboo cores with coco and impala horn overlay on the riser. I asked Drew if I could try it because I had never shot a bow that heavy. Well, I was shocked at how smooth it drew. It was love at first draw! The fastest bow I ever shot by far,But I thought 53# was my limit.Drew was kind enough to make me a deal I couldn't refuse so I took it home. Been shootin it every day. Got some heavy shafts on the way and I'm gonna make me up some new arows. Thanks Drew for giving me a good excuse for making some new arrows.

Nice score Brian, seems you shot that bow like it was one of your own right from the start. I agree on the super smooth and easy to draw part. We are pretty well set for the 21st(tues), so be sure to get there!
As for the rest of you crumbs, you sure know how to make a thread take a turn for the worse real quick.
 ;)

*WHOOPS.* :(

Now now fellers , in Nate's defense I does make purrty turkey talk that could convince even the smartest of birds ;0)I just lays it on real thick like and they runs right to me.
Brian , It was a pleasure to have met you and yours . I'm glad you like the Saluki and are getting use from it. It's a shame for such a fine bow to sit in the rack :0)Best of luck this season . Drew

Kenny, You have outdone yourself again My Brother!!!!!
This just keeps getting bigger and better every year. Rest assured,I will be back every year for as long as the Great Spirit decides to keep me on this Earth. It was great to see everyone again, just like a family reunion LOL.
Brian.....It was great to meet you Ben and E.J. and again,THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the antler handled obsidian knife you made for me.It is Truely BEAUTIFUL,and it was on display in our living room before my gear was unpacked LOL.
What made my heart glad was to see the Father-Son teams!!!!!
Aram and Ru.....I have known you both for a while now and I have watched Ru grow into a man.Watching these two was nothing short of AMAZING!!!!! They move through the woods together like a gentle breeze. The Big Bucks better look out, because if this pair gets on your trail, you're ending up over the campfire.
Jim and Joe,Drew and Adam.....My Brothers,I've watched you two hunting with your sons and it is easy to see that they are following in your footsteps. The boys are coming along very well and you both will have life long hunting companions.
Brian and Ben.....I'm glad to see that the "hook" has been slammed home!!!!! and what could be beter than a "double" catch!!!!! You both have a wonderful and unique situation. You both will follow the trail, learning as you go,working together as one. The Great One will shine upon you both.

Did you get a pic of Chuck with just his sweater vest on(and pants, for those with sick minds) I think he is on to something with having the wool next to the skin, now I'm in search of a vest like that, hopefully 100% wool so it don't scratch. :scared:
-
Good stuff guy's! Wish I could have been there.
Ken, I loved the video of you shooting War dog!
-
Hi Joe. I couldn't wait to get a look at the bow you made for Ken. Nice bow! I didn't get a chance to shoot it. I don't think I saw Ken shoot it either. He was way too busy takin pictures and guiding. Maybe next time, huh, Ken.
I think he could tell I was eyeballing it.The bow looks great on Ken. Goes great with that big knife. I'm assuming that War Dog is that bow. It would be an appropriate name for it.
Brian
-
yes "War Dog" is the bow Joe made for me, sorry ya didn't get a chance to shoot it brian, i will have it at the hunt on Oct 21st, you can shoot it then. i have from Oct 18th through Nov 9th of and i'm pretty sure i can make me with War Dog.
-
Ken I've been following this thread and really enjoying the read. I've also been wondering how the brackenbury's doing for ya? Take care brother and it looks like you guys had some fun.
-
I remember your size Jim,I've got my eyes open!!!!!
-
Ken, my mission is to get you a deer on the 21st. If it's with "War Dog" all the better. I don't think any of us will get a better chance.
-
The best thing about this hunt was the new friends that we made and the fun we had with the old ones.
