Title: Back from CO / LOTS of PICS
Post by: kennym on September 28, 2008, 03:21:00 PM
Elkless, exausted, exhilirated, mental batteries fully recharged!! Saw a lot of great country, camped for 8 days, 3 miles in at 8200 ft.
It took 4 days mule riding/scouting/hunting to find a decent herd of elk. Last time I was there, saw 23 elk in 3 days, this time 0 for 8 days. Still had a blast, took some pics, but won't be developed til Tues.(took some throwaway cams,Walmart won't 1-hour them??)
Was too warm,I think,the elk only bugled 1 1/2 days of 8.

High point of trip, hunting the Rockies.

Low point, dragged off my mule in the dark timber by a limb        (cracked my bow riser...)

Kenny,

Sounds like you made the best of a tough hunt.

I'm glad you made the fall ok even though your bow didn't.

Better luck next year, friend.

I had a similar experience 2 years ago(first and only elk hunt) but what an experience. Well worth the trip.
What part of CO were you hunting?    Pat

Todd, the fall was on my pack, which I now know you shouldn't wear while ridin,it was also the cause of the wreck. My only injury was a sore tricep on my left arm,was hard to draw my bow(before I noticed the crack)

Pat, we were SW of Steamboat Springs a ways,it was an invite hunt,so I can't disclose exact locations. It was well worth the trip, just wish it had been 20 degrees cooler!!

Welcome back kennym. Like they say, a bad day bowhunting is better than a good day at work.

Hope the arm is ok, bet you can fix the bow.

Kenny,

You sure hunted some beautiful country. I can't wait to see the pictures.

Bigfoot, bears, lions and all sorts and manners of disasters that await the hunter in that dark timber country will test a mans salt for sure. But man, just one awesome, musky breath of a rich dark timber forest is worth every endevor. Especially when you round a bend or negotiate some dead fall and that musky smell is made eye burning muskier by fresh elk spoor. Elk and dark timber go better together then BBQ sauce and BBQ'ed chicken.

Once again, I'm happy you're ok. I can't wait to see some photo's....

Take care,

Todd

On the bright side, you now have an excellent reason to get another new bow!

Welcome back Kenny. I had a similar incident during my elk hunt this year. I guess I will have to take the blame since I (as a human) am supposed to be smarter then the horse.   :knothead:

Glad you back I am looking forward to your pictures and stories.

Thanks guys,
The arm is already good, the bow will be fixed and I'll be ready for whitetails as soon as it cools and we get the soybeans harvested(gotta keep the banker happy!)

The trip was definitely worth it,my hat is off to those who regularly take elk with a stick!!  :notworthy:

I had an xtra bow in the truck,I'd already shot this one 3 or 4 times before I noticed the crack,so I figured it would make 1 more shot if need be.The wreck happened wed nite on the way back to camp, and we left fri about 2:00. I may do a fixalong on it soon.

I'll kinda do a playbyplay when I get the pics back.As a side note Walmart did the 1hour deal on Bro Johns disposable cam!! His wife took his in..??

Glad your ok Kenny. Sounds like memories were made, that's what it is all about anyway. Extras like getting an elk are just iceing on the cake and at our age we ain't suppose to have the iceing!! But every once in awhile we might just sneak something in just for fun. Can't wait to see the pictures, good luck with the harvest and the whitetail hunting.

Glad your back Kenny. To bad you didn't see any elk. But sounds like a good hunt anyway! So you are a farmer too? Hope the harvest goes well with few or no breakdowns so you can get out there and hunt!

Glad your back safe. Any trip in a wild place is a great trip. Actually killing or getting close to game is "gravy".... It seems that most of my great memories are made somewhere wild with a bow in my hand.... What a life a bowhunter leads!!

Share some pics when you get time.

Great looking area Kenny.

Elk hunting for us "lowlanders" is a tough deal.  I think of all the time it takes to scout for deer on a two or three hundred acre place until you get them figured out.  Then we go to elk country and have to cover square miles of territory.  Even with guided operations it isn't a sure bet and the DIY trips are even more difficult.

But they call it hunting, not killing for a reason.

Glad you had a good time.

Chris
