Title: 2008 Elk Trip photos
Post by: KentuckyTJ on September 28, 2008, 04:26:00 PM
Lowebow and I along with another trad buddy just returned from a public land Colorado Elk hunt.  This was my first experience but hopefully not my last. The bulls were bugling sparingly but no good shot's. Had a great opportunity on a cow but with one wind swirl the gig was up. If you haven't had this experience make sure you do it as soon as you can.

Looks like you had a great hunt. I would like to ask a couple of questions:

Which GMU were you hunting?
How far in, from the nearest road, did you hunt?
What was the best decision you made before or during the hunt?
What, if anything, would you do differently?

Thanks,

Thanks,
JDice, we were hunting unit 07. Drove right up to our camp.  The farthest we hiked in was 4 miles. All depends on where we heard bugles. Best decision was getting into shape and wearing good wool socks. One of our group wore cotton socks and by day two the blisters were so bad he missed two days of hunting.  If I could have a re-do, I would have slipped up on a cow I had feeding broadside at 40 yards and just took a shot instead of worrying about her winding me and trying to slip around and calling to her.

That's a mighty nice Mojostik yo ugot there TJ....I'd know those bows anywhere I think!

Kinda looks like mine 'cept for the lams.
I'd love to do an elk hunt someday....I just turned down a whitetail hunt in New York State, cuz I didn't feel I could spare the funds. But that's life gettin' in the way again.

Rob, the weather was perfect.  Low 30's to mid 40's in the mornings and highs to mid 70's.  A little more windy than usual which cut down on the distance you could here a bugle so we wore out a lot of boot leather trying to find those hot bulls.

Archer, it is a Mojostik and I highly recommend them for packing around up and down mountains due to their light weight.

Thanks for sharing. Your definetly right about doing a Elk hunt at least once in your life. The only thing is that once you go it gets in your blood and you have to go back. This is the first year that I didn't make it out over the last 4 years and I can't believe how much that I missed it. Thanks for letting me relive my hunts through yours.

Lookin good TJ!
I hope to add some pics later.  Haven't had time to do much since we got home yesterday.  I grabbed 1-1/2 hours of needed shuteye...then headed to the football field w/ the J-Man.

I look forward to heading back out.  Couldn't ask for a better hunting companion.

No distractions for 10 days...no internet, TV, radio, blackberry......I was very slow in remembering how to work all this crap today.
Makes me yearn for a simpler life.

My bow is a one piece Whisperstik Mojostik. Lowebow's is a MA model Black Widow take down.
