Title: 3 Under Doe Lope
Post by: Dsturgisjr on August 23, 2008, 05:19:00 PM
I tried 3 under this summer after a coaching session with Rod Jenkins. After using it for a week, I decided it was for me. Finally got a chance to put it to the test under pressure last week. Can't wait to try it on the local whitetails.

I had been shooting split for about two years now and just the other day i was getting very unhappy with my groups.  So with deer season just over a month away i decided to try three under.  I was dropping arrows in the sweet spot one after another.  Sweet lope by the way. Congrats

Congratulations on the doe. I started shooting 3 under a few years ago and have been much more consistent. Wait till you have been shooting 3 uncer for a year or so and try just 1 shot shooting split finger, it will feel like a stranger.

Congrats on the Antelope, Denny.  Where were you hunting?

I just made it home from South Dakota this morning. Did I mention SD is full of Antelope and Mule deer... LOL

I took this pic and then picked up my longbow. I should have waited until she was closer but didn't want trying to take a picture to ruin a chance on any antelope. She had kid's with her so I let her walk. Great fun last week.

Denny,

Congrats on the 'Lope!  I've switched to 3-under, too, and I've found I'm much more consistent with it than with split fingers.  Are you sure you shot that "lope, or did you scare her with your chrome dome/goatee look?    ;)    :)

Congrats Denny looking forward to hunt stories to come!!

Two years ago I got a heck of a sore middle finger shooting a little two short of bow. With to much finger pinch. Could not shoot split finger because of the pain. Switched over to 3 under with out the pain and never looked back.

Headed to Iron Bulls in a week or less, I think he has your hair, would ya like me to comb it for ya  :D    :jumper:

Thanks everyone! I was hunting in MT with Pete and his son Tanner. Getting to meet and spend time with them was the best part of the trip.

I caught a terrible bug on the way there and wasn't my normal fun-loving self though  :)

The great thing about Rod's coaching is that he doesn't make you copy everything he does. He makes you find your own answers on the blank bale. I'm anchoring with the C (formed by my thumb and pointer finger) behind my jaw. I'm using a BW 3-under tab. I'm shooting my standard tiller BW longbow. I raised the nocking point 1/8" when retuning. I didn't notice any difference in extra bow noise. My arrow end/tip is on a deer sized target from 0 to 35 yards.

Bryan, LOL I hope it just a light shower. Don't forget the extra heavy duty bags.  :)

Denny,
I was wondering if you would share more of your thoughts as to what you gained etc....Easier to get your eye in the sight picture or something like that. I am  playing with three under myself and it may help others as well if you could be so kind.I know your shooting was nothing to sneeze at before. Just curious.
                            thanks,
                                    Ron

I switched to three under when I realized that my inexpensive bow stacks bad and pinches worse.  My arrows were all over the place with a one-over grip, and though it was awkward at first, I immediately saw my groups improve.

For me, it was getting out of the way of the arrow, and then also sighting down the arrow more easily than with a one-over grip.  Of course, that means I can't shoot as far, which is way better for me than false confidence.

Are you sure that is not Elvis admiring that beauty of a buck?    :biglaugh:

Just got back from Wyoming and am glad to see the Montana expedition was a great success!  I am happy to say you can stay comfortable when it is 95F if you wear your Sitka Gear...

A couple of morning shots before it warmed up:

Shot the buck from a windmill blind at about 10 yards and once he realized the arrow went thru him, he sprinted about 75 yards before he went a'tumbling.  I hit the Snuffer SS a few licks on the steel and sent the same arrow/broadhead thru the doe the next morning from a Double Bull.  She never knew what hit her; she walked maybe 10 steps and tipped over!

You three under folks should be ashamed of yourselves telling us this secret a week before I leave for elk hunting.

I will have to try the three under next year, but you got in my head a little darn you :-)

Nice goats Denny and Steve.

I am another 3under advocate.  I had some accuracy issues when I started shooting the short Super Shrew bows and made the switch then.  I never shot better and have been using 3under technique ever since.   It may not be for every one but I would suggest everyone at least give it a chance if you would like to try to improve your shooting.

Nice goats SteveO! Very tasteful hero pics with artfully arrayed tufts of grass and bow placement to cut down on the gore factor. Well done all around.

In my recurve days, I drew with 3 fingers, then dropped my 3rd finger off the string at full draw, before releasing. Looking down the arrow gets your side to side lined up really well. You only need to adjust for distance after that. I can't seem to shoot a longbow comfortably that way though. Now, it's a more deliberate slow draw, then a release shortly after I get to the corner of my mouth.

Good luck this season!

I know if you are havingt a bow custom made, the bowyer does need to know ifyou shoot three under. Has something to do with how they tiller the bow.

I like it because there is no finger pinch, the arrow is close to the eye, and for me it seems a much smoother release.

Nice pictures guys! Denny and I had a great hunt. Lots of laughs and lots of antelope. All my Montana buddies loved ol' Denny!

My son "Tanner" keeps telling me that Denny's "guns" are bigger than daddys...

Let me tell ya...you haven't lived until you've spent an afternoon in a blind with Denny!

Looks like next fall...I'll have Guru and Denny to hunt with in Montana...Elk/deer/antelope!

Later dudes!
