Title: St Jude's Paradise Hunt 2007
Post by: Terry Green on October 24, 2007, 05:19:00 PM
I'd like to thank Fred Gimble and Mitch Walker for there generous donation to this hunt Charlie Lamb and I offered up.

Rob DiStefano and Vance Brewer will be guests of the hunt, and Bob Walker is going to cook and help out around camp in any way he can.

We saw 90 deer last year on this hunt, and expect the same this year as the weather has broken to cooler temps, its been raining for 3 days now and the forest floor will be great for stalking, the rain and wind no doubt brought down some acorns from above, and there's a lot of hogs on the property this year.

I'd also like to thank Mr. Sam Roberts for allowing us to donate this hunt at The Paradise.

Its gearing up, and I'm in a holding pattern at the airport awaiting the arrivals of Mitch and Rob.  Bob is just south of the airport buying groceries, and will also be in a holding pattern with me soon.  Vance and Charlie are holed up at JC's house this evening and will head south early AM.

Tomorrow morning Fred will fly in, and we'll pile him in and we'll be on our way.

Stay tuned....this is gonna be a doozie!!!

I'm packing now , have to leave for the airport in 7 hrs. Came home tonight to a busted water pipe in the basement , at least it happened before I left . I worry about things going wrong when I'm gone leaving my Goodwife to handle things. I guess I don't worry too much though ,  cause I keep going . Looking forward to this , Fred

To be lucky enough to spend the day with the Coots' family is awesome. Add Vance and Charlie in the mix, and it's "priceless". You cannot buy food that good, anywhere, at any price!  (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/CIMG1078.jpg) (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/CIMG1083.jpg)There's a lot more pic's to come...Vance and Miss Kim took several.

I ain't kiddin ya'll, that deer Don and his family brought was some of the best I've had. Really enjoyed our time as one big trad family at the dinner table Wed night, only thing better than that fellowship is more of it.

The stumpin was grand with lots of laughter, even Papalapin made it up to finally meet Charlie in person after years of being fellow Jack Howard bow fanatics.

Sky, in this case, no news is good news....no cell service in the swamp so if they ain't called, they are there.

Go get em fellers! Wouldn't surprise me if there's blood on the ground already....

I was pleased and honored to get a phone call from JC inviting me to dinner,  I told him I would have to get permission from the "boss".

When I asked what the occasion was, he told me that Charlie Lamb and some other Trad Gangers were in for the night on there way to the Paradise.  When he said "Charlie Lamb", I said "this one of the rare occasions where I will ask for forgiveness rather than permission".  However, the "boss was thrilled for me that I got to go.

It was great to finally meet a guy that I have considered a good personal frind for years, but had never met face to face.  He is a bit uglier tha I had pictured him, but the same great guy I had gotten to know.

I always enjooy the great Southern hospitality at the Coots place,  JC is a great guy and Miss Kim is a charming hostest.

Thanks for the invite.

Thought about a tree stand for about a half a second.

No pic as I left my camera in Terry's car.

We all rolled into camp at the same time Thursday afternoon,....and the magic of the Paradise began.  Those that have not been there before are in wonder of its beauty, and anticipation of the hunt......

Gear was unloaded, and everyone was getting settled into camp and getting there bows strung.  We had time to do a little scouting before dark, so that's what we did......then it was off to The Catfish House!!!

OK Guys....feel free to chime in at any time!!!

Mitch....your camera will be there tomorrow.

The flight home went smooth and Wildcat was waiting there at the airport, just purring to pick me up and git me home.  Absence do make the heart grow fonder.       :D

WOW, what a hunt!!!!!

It was a pleasure to finally meet Mitch and Vance and Fred, and great to meet up again with Terry, Charlie and Bob.  We had a great camp, lots of chatter and fun and that FANTASTIC cooking that Mr. Bob Walker dished out day after day - man, I tell ya that feller can COOK up a storm, and my second and third helpings proved that to me day after day, right Bob?    :D

I never measure a hunt by the game taken, but by my experiences with man and nature - the camp out and the gettin' afield - and this year's St Jude's hunt was all of that, including a Paradise Grand Slam for one outstanding bowhunter that involved a heckuva buck and a fine piggy to boot.  More on that soon enough.  Stay tuned ...

Rob - aka "The Button" (hey Vance!  :wavey: )

Rob stayed at camp that 1st afternoon to shoot, as I sent Fred on a hog quest since he had a yearly license for GA.  Charlie went to the area he hunted last year to find a stand location, and I sent Mitch on a quest around the white oak food plot to scout out that area surrounding it.  I took Vance to the Trashcan Woods to show him where to hunt the next morning.

Vance and I were sneaking along the walk in road and just as we closed in on the entrance to the hardwoods a nice 8 point buck steps out of the pines bout 80 yards away and stands broadside in the road just watching us for a few moments, and it soon turned and vanished into the dark timber. Big buck #1 and we aint even started.  Looked promising, but I knew that moon was leery.

Charlie got a lock on stand set up, Mitch and Fred both saw lots of hog sign....and everyone was full of anticipation, but had an empty stomach.

Yes, we had a great dinner at the Catfish House, and everyone got to know everyone a bit better, and the story telling went on back at camp that night.

I had high hopes for sure for the two auction winners, but topping the sighting of 90 deer from last year's hunt was going to be hard enough not to mention the full moon.

I dropped everyone off the following morning and I defaulted to the far west end of the property. I arrived at my parking spot at shooting light.

This place I knew very well, and hoped to find a lot of sign in there. There's a slough I dip into and climb out with a view of some big chestnut oaks.  I've done this a few times, and caught deer there before, but this time they caught me and I saw a really nice osage antlered buck and two behind it carrying the mail. Big buck #2.  The jig was up on those, but I set up hoping a few more might wander  in.  We'd set an early time to come out based on the moon, 10:30, and eat an early lunch and back out again to meet prime time for the day.

I headed back to pick everyone up, and I was the only one that saw anything that morning. Odd for The Paradise..........

Just got back from Trick or treating with the grand kids , great fun . If there is a better camp cook than Border Bob Walker I haven't met him yet . I asked yesterday morning when I woke up if a really killed a big rack buck and a hog or was I just dreaming , he assured me I did and added I slept all night with a big smile on my face , not so sure about that as I don't remember sleeping . I had bought a yearly license a few weeks ago when I hunted with JC and as you know the weather was against us but JC said our efforts were like making deposits to be withdrawn at a later time . Well I emptied my account . I was ablke to hunt Thurs. afternoon  and scouted for some hogs in an area Terry said was thick with them , I saw a lot of sign but no piggies . Friday am found us out before daybreak heading to the woods. After going over the arial photo of the Paradise Terry helped me to carry in a hang-on stand and 4 rapid rail treesteps about a half a mile into an area called the trashcan woods . He left me there with a few ideas as where to look . I scouted about 2 1/2 hours and found an old path with 5 scrapes on it leading between an overgrown food plot on one side and a pine thicket on the other with an oak ridge coming into it on an angle . I set up and saw nothing that day but felt good about the stand so left it up that night . Gotta take a phone call be right back , Fred

Title: Re: St Jude's Paradise Hunt 2007
Post by: Terry Green on October 30, 2007, 11:23:00 PM
Lots of great areas to hunt on this 4000 acres let me tell ya, and you just can't let the size, terrain, and vegitation overwhelm ya....gotta try and use the basics....much like hunting foot hills or mt terrain, but on a MUCH smaller scale.  People laugh when they hear the term 'ridge' down here in south GA, and they see a 2 foot difference in elevation....but it does make a difference.  When Fred told me where he set his stand, I knew it was just a matter of putting in enough time on it to make it pay off...it was an all around hot spot and transition area.....for deer as well as hogs.

The Trashcan woods are enough to hunt an entire season, and its not the biggest block of woods on the property.

Bob had fixed us up a great breakfast that morning and cleaned up the kitchen, and went for a walk in the convict woods.  Name seemed appropriate since the law found a convict living in there years ago.

Anyhow, Bob found lots of hog sign, but no siting on his short stint of hunt/scouting for alternate hunt sites if needed.

Mitch walked a bit, as there were no members in camp, and he too found lots of hog sign that 1st morning.

Back , now where was I , Oh yeah there were also 2 more scrapes along the oak ridge . I figured a buck would come to these before they hit the ones on the open trail . There were 2 small branches I wanted to trim when I left but forgot .Called home and left my wife a message that we hadn't killed anythig yet but that didn't mean nothing .Next morning I was up in this stand before daybrake , about 8:15 a small forkhorn or spike came in on my left side out of mrange so I softly grunted and he cicled around and went and worked a scrape on the trail which was about 50 yards away and then walked off , that seems to happen to me a lot . Nothing more so I left about 10:30 and headed out to be picked up for lunch and a strategy meeting with everyone else . Some nice deer being seen but no shots by anyone . Sat. afternoon Terry puts me on a small rise in a swamp that has some big oaks that are dropping acorns that the deer are hitting . I have 12 screw in steps and a big hang-on stand . We were missing the t-bolt for the stand and I thought I could use a screw-in step to hang it on but after about an hour and a half of hanging on by my leg wrapped around the tree , the strap in my mouth and trying to connect the buckle and tighten the strap with no success I gave up and took everything to the ground , any longer and I would have done bad things to that stand . (later back in camp we found the strap to be defective )I then decided not to stay where I was as I had been sweatimg up a storm and making all kinds of noise and had to do something so I walked carrying the stand back over to the trashcan woods where I found Terry's truck . I left the stand there and walked in the half mile or so to my stand and sat for the last hour of shooting light and even remembered to cut the 2 branches that were bothering me .Back to camp and spent another great evening with Terry , Border Bob , Charlie Lamb , Vance Brewer , Rob Destefano and my partner on this hunt Mitch Walker . These guys are all incredible shots , great sportsmen , serious hunters , honorable men and a real blessing to be around . And best of all they put up with me . Next morning would be the last  and I still had confidence in my set-up so I was headed back to my my stand before first light . Terry was taking Rob and Mitch to their spots but first dropped of Charlie and myself at the trashcan woods . We were to meet back at the truck at noon and if I wasn't there that meant that I was going to move my stand another half mile or so deeper into the woods . As I knew this would be a big undertaking and put me much further away from the truck with a lot of gear to carry out I told the guys in the truck that my plan was to shoot a deer that morning and spend the afternoon hunting hogs which I had been neglecting . I was sitting in my stand from before daylight to mid morning when I dedcided to put an arrow with a judo head and take a shot at a clump of grass before I climbed down  but decide to look at my watch , it was 10:14 . I figured I came this far and tried this hard so that I could wait another 16 minutes to 10:30 . I put my broadhead back on and sat back to wait , sorry guys this will have to be continued tomorrow as my 2 fingers and my eyes are about done in for now . Fred

That morning Fred is talking about is the morning Charlie hunted another stand of white oaks on a 'ridge' next to a slough.  I figure Charlie was in a dandy spot with all the cluttered sign of acorns disappearing and a few scraps.  I was confident both men would see something....just too much sign and the weather had broke to overcast and cooler temps.

I'd set Rob back out to guard a line of 8 scraps made the day before, and Mitch in the place I'd also found the day before.  Mitch hunted that stand that night, and while we were setting him up for his 1st climber adventure, a 6 point came strolling though hound dogging and he never raised his head the whole time we watched him cover 100 yards....he also never knew we were there.

Mitch had real close encounter with big buck #3 and I'll let him tell you about him getting caught between two trees with an eight point only 10 yards away.

I went to the spot where Fred couldn't get the stand to work, cause I knew someone had to hunt that spot, especially since there were FOUR chestnuts dropping, and Fred didn't get to hunt it the night before..........

Sure enough, I saw big buck #4, but he only got within 35 yards before he sensed something was amiss, and turned and went back the same way he came...as did another doe.  I saw on other deer that morning that WAS in range, but I didn't even know it was there.  I had just set up and used my bow to push off a dead limb right in front of me, and a deer moved off before I could even see if it was a buck or doe due to the low light.  I'd set Rob or Mitch up here for the last evening if either of them wasn't getting any action........

Vance was up early this morning     :D   and decided to hunt along with Charlie in a totally new spot that is very protected and gets very little traffic.....well, not much of this property get much traffic, but this one for sure doesn't get pressured at all.

Charlie and Rob were now in areas that looked promising.  The started out where they left off last year, and commited for a day and a half in an area that was covered up with deer last year, the there were no sitings by either of them.....that spot was also hot the year before for me seeing 8 or 9 different bucks in one day...all but one in bow range.

Bob and Vance took to running together and they started sighting deer and pigs as they stayed on the move basically chasing hogs.

Vance and Charlie are still out traveling, and Bob is as well I believe.....ya gotta watch Bob...he'll be filming when you aint lookin.

Mitch should have his camera tomorrow, and maybe him and Fred will tell a few stories.......

There I was deciding to wait the extra few minutes till 10:30 . I looked to my left and nothing , looked to my right and nothing either . I had a feeling something was going to happen and I slowly looked left again and low and behold there was a huge buck about 25 yards away walking past the first shooting lane with his nose to the ground . I swung my bow up and drew at the same time and released as he passed the last shooting lane , the one I had just cut the branches on . Perfect neck shot and down he went . since I am not used to using a safety harness in my excitement I tried to get down without undoing it . I'm glad no one gets to see some of the stuff I do when hunting . I look at my watch , it's 10:25 , time to spare . Now I have to make a decision , should I take the stand and rapid rails out and wait for help with the deer or take the deer and leave the stand and send someone back for them . I had about an hour  to pack all the stuff back where we were to meet , if I wasn't there I wouldn't get picked up till dark . Sometimes things just come to me , I decided not to hamper anyone else's hunting time by carrying out my gear so I tied the bucks horns to my harness and grabbed the treestand and my bow in one hand and the 4 rapid rails in the other and carried them out together . I'm not that strong I think adrenalin had a lot to do with it . I made it to where the trail raised up and was covered with logging debris and I could go no more . I was about 200 yards from where Terry showed up with the truck and had to leave the deer and carry the stand , I was sure glad Terry , Rob and Mitch showed up when they did . Now back to camp and some much needed lunch . The buck is a non-typical 9 point and the best deer I ever shot . These guys down here probably shoot bigger ones all the time but without a doubt this buck will be remembered for the rest of my life. The camp was making fun of me as they were taking a break and then going out hunting again and I had a buck to skin and butcher. But that was alright I got it done with enough time to take a walk just outside of camp where there was some good hog sign . Everywhere I looked there was fresh sign , I was tired so I stepped of onto an overgrown field and took of my fanny pack to adjust and take a leak , as I put the pack back on and snapped the buckle a big hog grunted and ran across the trail 15 yards in front of me . Upon inspection I seen where he came out of a trail a rabbit would have to squeeze through . Back on the main road and there was 3 sets of hog tracks in the tire tracks that were less than an hour old . Too much excitement for me , I found where someone had stuck 3 sticks in the ground and hung a small piece of camo fabric on with a bucket for a seat . The blind overlooked a small mud wallow . I sat on the bucket to catch my breath and a small black pig comes out of the woods and starts dragging around a long branch , I am dumbfounded , as I get ready to draw a larger black and white hog comes out and I can stand it no more . I shoot the bigger of the two which ends up being about 100 lbs. More fun than the law allows . You have to come to the paradise to believe it . I won a hog hunt 2 years ago and didn't get a hog but knew the place had tremendous potential , there for I bid with confidence for this hunt . This hunt will not go cheap next year as I will be bidding again . This is only the short version as I take so long to type . I got in late tonight because I left work early and went hunting , haven't been in the local woods for a few days , and my luck mis still holding out , I shot a large doe . Double lung , and broke the off shoulder , she went down in 45 yards . As I told Vance : It's good to be me . Thanks again to Terry , Rob ,Charlie , Vance, Bob and Mitch , who if I twist his arm will probably try for this hunt again together , it will be his turn . God Bless , Fred

Maybe Terry or Rob can post some pics for me as I am computer- challenged . As a side note a few years ago I went to a fundraising raffle for a small Christian school my kids attended . They had a circular saw one of the local merchants donated and as I needed one I bid on it , I got the saw for $125 and was told by a few other people there that I could have bought it at the local Home Depot for $100 . I knew that , and felt if I had to explain why I overpaid for it they wouldn't understand . That's the way I feel about St. Jude's Auction , you may think an item or hunt is a little high but the rewards are worth it , you can't put a price on helping kids and your hunt could end up like mine and be priceless . My thoughts , Fred

Freds buck was big buck #4...Mitch still has to tell about #3 and #5....#5 was a 'HUGE' buck as Mitch called it.

And I have yet to tell about 6, 7, and 8.

So, we saw less than half of the total deer than last year, but more than twice as many big bucks. Got one of them and a hog as well, not to bad.

I don't have any of the hog pics, and I was out with Rob and Mitch that evening....hopefully someone will post some pics.

They'll be more pics to come from others....stay tuned.......

Thanks Bob for posting hog pics ! JC , I  thought I emptied my account on this hunt but last night at a hot trail setup I took a big doe so things ain't over yet . Bucks here are finally starting to move . I don't think I hunt enough , so many deer so little time . I have to figure a way to use up some more of my Georgia license before it expires . Hog hunting seems to be very addicting , I will have to check into this Texas Sweat thing I hear so much about . Fred

Fred - WARNING! - going to Texas in the winter to hunt hogs and javalina is addicting. Plus, you may loose that pasty winter complexion and hard earned seasonal depression that us yankees cultivate. Just letting you know so you can make an informed choice about the TXSweat.

Sorry it has taken awhile to get to posting.  For some unknown reason all those around me think that the world does not revolve around bow shooting and hunting!

The trip started off crazy.  Between work and home life it was questionable if I would even make it!  Terry and I were on the phone with possible flight changes up till the night before.  He was very understanding and thankfully it all worked out in the end.

My flight was late but Terry and Bob grabbed me at the curb in Atlanta and we were off to dinner and get settled into the hotel.

The thing that strikes me about Trad is that even though I had never seen or met anyone on this trip it was very easy to settle in and relax.

Later that night Terry picked up Rob and we all had a good time talking before turning in.

In the morning, after a bite to eat we were off to grab Fred.  Vance and Charlie were missing as they got to poking around Atlanta.  A stop at Walmart aloud everyone to catch up and have some lunch.  The group was all together now and on a mission except for Vance who was was still poking!

We got to Paradise after a short drive and settled in.  In on time at all bows were coming out a a little warm up was taking place.

We went out that evening for a little walk about.  There was pig sign every where at my location.  Terry put me in an area that consisted of a big field with hardwoods surrounding it.  At the end if one kept going they would find a "ridge" with a dirt road on the other side.

I live in Utah.  The elevation difference between my house and office is measured in Thousands of feet.  I found the ridge Terry was talking about when I stepped down a couple of feet!  The other thing that struck me is how noisy the woods in the east are.  With the acorns falling it sounds like animals everywhere.

A quick walk told me hogs were using the road and puddles.  As I was returing I bumped a doe in the field.

Things were looking good and we hadn't ever been to the Catfish House!

I had a few very close encounters and got to climb a tree with a cliber for the first time.  Did I mention that I am afraid of heights?

After the fist night scouting around and eating some catfish, we all hit the woods early.  The first morning I saw a ton of sign but no deer or hogs.

That evening I headed into the woods with Terry.  We found a great looking place with great deer sign.  I was in a guillie and set up with my back against a tree with some cover to the front and side.  Terry set up down the trail and up a tree.

Did anyone say that there are bugs in Georgia?  We waited untill dark.  Right at last light two deer came walking down the trail right at me.  The doe stopped about 40 yards out snorted and took off through the woods.

The next morning found me in the same spot with high hopes.  Nothing turned up.  We were fighting a full moon.  There was sign everywhere but few animals were being seen.

After a quick lunch we were off to a new promiseing sight.  I got a quick lesson on climbing stands.  When Terry and I got to the spot we were looking around for a good tree.  When I say we I mean Terry as I had to this point never climbed a tree.  As we were looking at a tree a buck ran across the slew and up a trail nose too the ground.  He never saw us.

A tree was picked and up I went.  I felt like an inch worm going up the tree.  I told Terry I was good.  He said I was less than 10 feet up and get up the tree.
