Went hunting with some friends of mine near LaGrange GA......dove in the woods at 5 o'clock Saturday evening and almost had two 8 pointers before dark.
1st one hung up at a creek crossing and it was sniffing around...I knew what was fixing to happen.....
I'd crossed the creek there myself, and it smelled me on the canes and blew outta there...If it would have crossed the creek, I'd have had a 12 yard shot.
2nd one came bounding along the creek, same side I was on from behind me. I spotted it looking over my right shoulder behind the tree I was standing in front of. I saw it drift away from the creek and was going to cross over a little rise...or so I thought.
Soon as the buck, bigger than the 1st one, got behind a row of trees 60 yards away, I slowly turned to my left to see if I could get a shot as he passed some 20 yards away or so I hoped.
When I got turned my eyes picked him up and he was headed straight toward me, and coming full trot and was closing the cap real quick!...He kept coming till he was THREE yards from me, and stopped. I could have just about reached out with my bow and poked his nose...but I dare not move. I just looked at his head that was down, and just wondered when he'd see me.
He moved to his left, and I didn't know if he was going to come right by my tree or cross the creek, so I held...the instant plan was to let him pass before I moved, and when I heard him get passed me I'd wheel around for a shot...but I heard him step in the water and I stepped out from behind the tree only in time to see him climb out and part the canes on the other side.
He continued on his journey till he was out of ear shot, and the only pause he made was basically at my feet, he never knew I was there.....things were looking good for tomorrow!
-
Looks like Terry will have to cchange his avatar. Beautiful deer!!

Saturday morning was a bit slow....but I had confidence in my area, as I'd seen some nice bucks in there before. Saw a little 6 or 8 point following a doe as she fed, he wouldn't get closer then 20 to her...she'd move he'd move.....Hmmm, sounds so familiar....like a hunt I haven't told about yet on the Paradise hunt...anyhow, they passed bout 50 yards in front of me....looking forward to hunting after lunch......
-

After I decided to head in for some quick grub, I wanted to check the little area bout 75 yards away. I'd hunted there before, and seen bucks, and wondered how 'hot' it was. I found 6 fresh scraps, and some really nice rubs....tuff choice on where to hunt after lunch....specially since I had a swamp to check out as well that was really hot last year...just tuff to hunt.
After lunch I headed out with a guy I'd met the night before that's a recurve shooter, Tim was his name, to go to the swamp....and I was going to show him an area just beyond to check out. The swamp was hot again, but its just difficult to hunt off the ground, cause you can't cover enough sign by setting up on the fringe, and when you get in the middle of it, and the wind was swirling too much as I got winded just slipping around in there.
With no trees tall enough to climb, and no lock on stand in the truck...and a chainsaw was needed as well to get in there right and attempt to cheat the wind....so I decided to go back to my area, but I still had another decision of whether to hunt the same spot, or the new seemingly 'hotter' spot just south of me....I agonized over this one as I stood at the entrance for at least 10 minutes...I needed to get in there and get set up.
I made the choice to hang with my original spot as all the bucks I'd seen, even while hunting the 'hotter' spot last year, came through my original spot. I just couldn't give it up........
-
Great buck and story Terry congradulations!
Brent
-
Now thats a pretty buck, congrats.
-
The more I look at the buck ... the more I wanna take off work.<><
-
Wow.What a buck!!Congrats on one fine animal.
-
I got in there and set up.....and I was anxious about the evenings hunt. Just coming off the St Jude's Paradise hunt will all the big bucks sighted hound dogging, cruising, and following does had my senses keened up.
The time changed the night before, and I was in there at 3:30 and had just under 3 hours of fun and games left for the weekend....or so I thought.
I see a deer way off cross the bottom long about 4:30 and head up a rise. It was a big bodied deer, but couldn't tell if it was a buck or a doe, and a little later, I see a deer come off that same rise and cross again onto my side of the brook. Just caught bits and pieces as it was 200 yards away or so.
Then I hear a deer grunting from the 'hot spot' I almost set up on, and I grunted back. It grunted again and was closer...it was coming my way.
I saw the buck, and it was a dandy let me tell ya, but it was basically across the bottom mowing over some canes. Definitely a shooter, and I only saw it from the side, but it continued heading north on the far side of the bottom. I grunted a few more times, but no reply........
-
Come on now.....
-
Great story Terry. Keep it coming. I love that deer and so close to home.
-
Great buck! Can't wait for the rest of the story.
-
All was quiet now, almost too quiet....but that ended 30 minutes later when I heard a deer trotting. And it sure sounded heavy to me!
I looked over my left shoulder and here comes what looks like a mule with a rack and a half!!! No, I didn't count the points, I put that rack out of my mind! And he's trotting right in line to give me a 20 yard shot if he doesn't waiver...and he doesn't. He comes into shooting range and magically slows to a walk, then stops....and then I pull a bone head!!!
I had to squat real low and lay the bow over to get through a hole in the vegetation. It wasn't a thread the needle hole, it was one the size I'd shot through many times at rabbits, deer and hogs successfully....and I've practiced this shot a bazillion times, but I blew this one.
I dinked the lower limb of my hole, and the arrow tinked and sail right over the bucks back....and as he bolted forward I stood back up straight and turned my shoulders toward him. He stopped after a 20 yard bound, and looked back in my direction, but he wasn't going to catch me move.
He took a few steps toward me and stomped his hoof, and stood for a moment, and then to my amazement, he went back to business as usual and started milling toward me at an angle...this is when I moved...to get another arrow as he was screened by a bunch of vines.
I was already squared to shoot, all I needed was for him to turn to his left and step into an opening and stop....a lot to ask hu?....but he DID!!...and I let him have it!!!
I watched the arrow sail and enter at the proper elevation, and what looked like just right for a slight quartering way shot. I heard a snap as the arrow impacted, and he exploded straight ahead for 10 yards and made a 90 degree turn south dead away from me running over what ever was in his path....he was hurt bad, and I knew it. The florescent fletch still showing verified what I thought I saw, and I was very hopeful, but not sure of an exit wound.
I waited about 10 minutes and decided to try and look for blood and the fletched end of my arrow as I heard it clicking as he made off....as I was going to run out of light fast. I found no blood or arrow in the 1st 30 yards I looked, and I decided to back out till morning. I felt like the deer was dead in a stone's throw, but I just wasn't going to chance pushing him.
I spotted what looked like a deer 40 yards from where I'd stopped the night before, and I jogged till I found out that it was just a big slab of light gray bark and a rusty reddish bent log...but no sooner as my hopes were dashed at that instant, I looked up the rise to the left, and there was no doubt at what I saw. He looked big as a horse!........Here's a couple of views.....

Congrats Terry. Very nice deer, and nice story. Seems like everything came together for you that day.
-
I shot him with a 60 inch 64# Thunderstick MOAB that I had named 'Tines' - Arrow Dynamics Trad Heavy - Zephyr Sasquatch....so at 260#s, it was Sasquatch vs Sasquatch.
I've been asked what will he score.....by my book, BIG :D ...but for those that wanted to know, I was informed that it was ruff scored at 140 and some change.
I'm still riding the wave.....what a feeling.
I'll be back after lunch with a few more pics....and yes Vance, I have one specially for you.
-
Congrats Terry, thats an awesome buck.

-
TG
Awesome story and beautiful buck!!
Congratulations...enjoy the wave!!!
-
Pretty quick on the new avatar!
Based on the article in Ga Sportsmen that featured the top ten Ga bucks of 2006 you are in all likelihood looking at a top 25 deer for the year for the state of Ga with a score in the 140s.
Congratulations!
-
Gregg....Rob did that....didn't ask and didn't tell....just took it upon himself....just like JC did posting the 1st pic....good friends can get away with stuff like that ya know. :D

Entrance wound....

This one's for Vance....

Great story, not often you get two chances at a Buck like that, they don't get that big by being stupid.
Tater
-
What a great looking deer. Terrific symmetry. Enjoy the ride because it is a super accomplishment.
Take care, Louis
-
AND you were on the ground. Holy Cow! :notworthy:
-
I'm still riding the wave.....what a feeling.
And what a wave that must be, most hunters will hunt there whole lifetime and never see a deer of that caliber let alone actually take one with Trad gear. Congratulations. That is one fine Buck.
-
Congrats, Terry. That is a horse for anywhere but unheard of in GA. He must have been eating some of Hogzilla's feed! I'll be in Oglethorpe Co. this weekend. I can only hope! Pat
-
Hold on!!!!!!!
I need to address a comment....I was not on the ground that evening when I shot that buck.
I was about 12 feet up the same tree I was standing at the night before. I used a base of a stand that was in camp.
However, if I'd have been on the ground, the 1st shot wouldn't have deflected. ;)
Also, I'd like to thank everyone that's posted, called, and emailed....it sure is nice when so many friends are also riding the wave with ya!!!
Thanks again, means more than ya know.
-
Congrats. Pretty buck.
-
Terry, Great job!! That is one beautiful buck. Congratulations...Doc and a
-
Congratulations on a really nice Georgia buck.
-
Great job. Isn't it amazing that 'Ol Murphy strikes just at the wrong time on big animals? We'd have a wall full of big bucks/elk/etc if it weren't for Murphy. Seems extra special when you somehow get a second chance and make it count!
-
WOW! That's a great deer. Congrats Terry, well deserved.
-
Awww, Tarrzzzzz... here I was using this thread as my "get outa jail" card to scrap the treestands I love but my aging body hates sittin in this year! :knothead:
Yer a killin machine now! Wow that is a purty deer... I'd see one like that I'd likely fall outa the danged tree stand! Way to go, Bro! :)
-
Check out the size of his neck...and it aint even near full rut!
-
Now that you've seen his neck...you can get a better perspective on just how big his body is.....I still can't get over it!
And I can't get any work done for the phone ringing and the emails. Too cool. I'll have to get to work EARLY tomorrow.

Yes Sir!...that's what I call a high class problem!!!
I'll post some pics of the bow tomorrow. As I said earlier, I named it 'Tines' since the Tamo Ash veneers resemble the many colors of tines we chase. I had committed to taking a good buck with it starting last year, and I've been taking it exclusively accept for a TX deer hunt last year.
Taking a good buck with this bow was one of my goals this year.....and now all those other goals can fall by the wayside if they wish. This was just too much.
-
Sorry Joel....missed your post. Yes, that's the same spot.
And I can't open the pics....I'll call ya tomorrow.
-
Congrats Terry, beautiful buck.
-
WOW :scared: :notworthy: Huge deer. I wish I could kill one that size some day. Cool knife.

Very nice deer Terry, great acomplishment! Never mind the size of his neck, look at the size of those broadheads in your quiver! Do you have to get tower clearance before launching one of those?
Also is that a Doug Campbell knife in the pic? Gorgeous looking knife.
Again, congrats Terry, a truly magnificent animal

Wow! That is a giant of a buck for the southeast. A giant buck anywhere but especially a southern deer. I've hunted here for nearly 20 years and I don't know of anyone whose killed a 260lb deer. Quite a few 260lb hogs but not whitetails. Thanks for sharing.
Mark
P.S. I just re-read and noticed you shot him near LaGrange. That's only about an hour and 1/2 from where I hunt. Kinda encouraging to say the least!
-
pseman,
Its a great deer, and has a huge body- you should see the bucks they are taking in urban Atlanta this year.
I have a pic of one that was taken with a compound, behind a big shopping mall here...its 190 inch deer..and the body was near 300.
We have MN, VA, and TX genetics as well as our own native deer...they can get big, if we let them live long enough.
-
Great deer Terry. Congrats!!
-
Wy to go Terry! Very nice!
Brian
