We're getting closer gentlemen. In 66 days we'll be on our way to Ontario for Blackies. I have been hearing some good reports from Tim. This look as if we are gonna have a good hunt. He has been seeing some really nice bears.
I'll be posting updates on this thread as we get closer. I have been doing alot of shooting here lately and am starting to get all my stuff together. Got a couple new stands and a couple new bows, lots of big nasty broadheads that I'll start tuning soon. What are you all doing to get ready?
Here are a couple pics for ya.

Leroy, That is awesome. I am sure you are going to have great luck on your bear hunt. I am looking forward to hearing the stories when you come to Michigan for Deer Camp.
-
Dang it, it's hard enuff to sleep at nite....and now THIS!!!!!hehehehe. I've been shooting some, need to get a treestand back up in the yard, for some broadhead practice!!! Sent the check last week, to Ituksum...so he should have some bait money!!!lol. Gonna be an awesome trip, fo sho!!!!
-
Leroy,
66 days, Your leaving on the same day as I am for my fall bear hunt! Great minds think alike.
-

Tim, I'll be sure to save some of the good stories for you guys at Deer camp.
-
The way you been shooting them black fur balls gonna be in trouble.
-

-
Stay Calm!
Pick a Spot!
Kill It!
-
Leroy,
I'm heading up around Wapigoon Ontario Canada to Bears paw landing with my dad for our fall hunt. We manage to get a hunt together every fall even though miles keep us apart most of hunting season. This is a place Fred Bear, Jim Dougherty and some guy named Charlie lamb have hunted! I'm ready to say the least! Good luck to all thats heading on youre hunt!
-
The same to you and your Father Dennis. It'll be story time this fall for certain. Good luck to any and all bear hunters this fall.
-
Hey LeRoy, been shooting as much as I can. I have been real busy with moving back to Idaho. Should hope to be done next weekend. I got my first tree stand this weekend for my B-day from my parents so I will be doing alot of practice out of it the next 66 days. Cant wait to go.
Jesse
-
Get lots of practice Jesse. Keep your stand height at about 10-12 feet and your targets from 10-15 yards.i'll be gettin with you all about a rally point for the final leg of the trip once we get a bit closer to our departure date.
-
Jonesy, I was wondering who's shooting you were talking about, couldn't be LeRoy's. :knothead: :D
I'm looking forward to hearing all the stories from this hunt. OH and no matter what LeRoy says about me in camp, its all lies!
-
Not Hardly! At least I got you shootin a good bow now! ROTFLMAO!!!! Bet you a set of $4 antler burr limb bolt would look good on there Chad. :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
-
no comment lol.jonesy
-
It's probably better that way Mike! LMAO!!
-
I gotta start shootin from me campstool, for Wyoming antelope, then crawl up a tree, and practice for Ontario bArs...Wife's been sayin I need more exercise, guess that'll do!!!!lol. Think if I spray paint me deer target black, it'll help???!!!lol
-
LOL Shannon will never live those limb bolts down. For those that don't know, I had a set of antler limb bolts laying next to some hunting videos at the trading blanket at cloverdale. I took off to look for some deals while my wife, Shannon watched the blanket. I told her that i wanted $2 each for the videos and she thought i was talking about the limb bolts. When i came back she proudly announced that she had sold my limb bolts for $4... :banghead: The guys gave her a hard time about it all weekend. Next year i think i will hire someone to watch my blanket as it will be cheaper in the long run.
-
Chad, I could use a pair of those at that price, Heck, I'll even send ya me own antler burrs...lol!!!
-
You're right Chad. Shannon is NEVER gonna hear the end of this one. LOL!!
-
Mr. Donigan...are you Rick and Carl out there someplace?
-
Sure am - just got back from a few days in Chicago. A bit of friendly advice - NEVER go to the Taste of Chicago on July 3. In fact I don't think I will ever go back. I never knew there were so many people in the world as what were there.
Family vacation to Washington D.C and one more week of Boy Scout camp and I can get serious about the hunt.
-
Rick that must have been a real zoo in there on the 3rd! Glad it wasn't me.
-
LeRoy,
There were times when we were shoulder to shoulder with a crowd that was just barely shuffling along. Never again.
-
That's no fun. I'd much rather be in the middle of nowhere listening to the skeeters.
-
I'm still here! It has been crazy around the office.
I set up a tree stand to practise from. Any idea how far the shots might be?
Also, how many stands should we taking? I have a hanging stand and a climber, will that be enough?
It's about time I start preparing my hunting clothes. Last time I went I took all my camo and put them in an air tight tub. But I also took a large zip-lock bag and filled it with green pine needles that I snapped as I put them in the bag. I poked some pin holes thru the bag so the smell could get out but not the needles. Then I tossed it into the tub and sealed it up.
When I opened it in Canada, all my clothes smelled like a pine tree. I saw bear every day until I got mine. So, I should probably try it again.
Can't wait,
Carl
-
Good questions Carl...I've been shootin quite a bit, will keep shootin at MoJam all this week...It's gittin closer ya'll!!!!!!!
-
I'd say our max yardage will be 15 yards. I had this discussion with Tim at Ituksum. He was wanting to know so he could plan for our setups. I'm probably only going to take one stand and a couplwe sets of climber sticks so if I need to move I can pretty easy. I got one of my new bows for the trip last week and I'll be shootin it from here on out.
-
Good to know, LeRoy! Glad to see ya finally "settled" on one measly bow from that collection...LOL
I'm thinkin one good hangon, and my climbin sticks, and me safety harness of course!!!
-
We all need to remember the safety harness Bud!
-
Good luck guys and have a safe hunt,,can't wait to see and here the stories that come back,,
I have just a couple exzerpts from a neet stroy I'm reading right now,,The story of St. Hubert,,the hunter who hunted on good friday and saw a stag with a cross between its antlers,,
(http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c175/whitbuffalo/Jagermeister-Label.jpg)
1-Caveman instincts bond all hunters when they're in the field - no matter what modern civilization has done to each person. :campfire:
2-Anything from smearing the blood of a freshly killed deer on your face (similar to war paint) to saying a brief prayer of thanks to loud whoops, or simply firm handshakes all around pretty much describe the range of activities surrounding a freshly killed deer, elk or bear here in America. It certainly is a rite of passage for a youngster to take their first big game animal and it's an experience they'll never forget.
Regardless, giving thanks to the dead animal, and to God, for the resulting nourishment must be what it's all about. Respect for the fallen, and seeking a blessing for the meat, and honoring the death of one of God's creatures must be the catalyst for these traditions.
3-So, if you wish, say a prayer of thanksgiving or ask a blessing of St. Hubert when you kill your next deer or elk; just remember to honor the death of the wild animal and utilize the meat with respect. It died so that you might live.
Guys, have a wonderfull time in your hunt and jorney,,Jason B..
-
Thanks whitebuffalo!!!! I'm bettin we bring back a picture or two!!!!
-
I'll second that Brad. We may even perhaps have some Vid to show.
-
The time is flying past us now. I'll be starting to do my serious tuning this weekend and I'll also be shooting from my elevated position from now on. Keep your shots to 15 yards and under boys we're gonna get up close and personal.
-
Won't be long now!!
-
Hey LeRoy, coming up fast now isn't it.I have finally got my my first tree stand and will be shooting out of it as much as I can.
Jesse
-
Good deal Jesse! I gotta get mine set up in the back yard today. I just been shootin off of the garage roof. Got one of the bows making the trip with me tuned in yesterday. Now when the other one comes home I'll get to work on it.
-
spent some time on the phone tonight trying to contact everybody. Left messages. everyubody give me a shout when you can!
-
Good luck guys!! Man I would be on cloud 9 right now just waiting for the day to leave. I cant wait until I get my first chance at a bruin. I look forward to all the pics, vids, and stories when you guys return. Stay safe.
Tim
-
Thanks Tim! Maybe next year Bud! If you aren't makin more Trad shooters! LMAO!!
-
Yeah we will have to see how it goes. I should have thought this one through a little better. It was bad timing on my part. But you know what they say stuff happens.
-
You got it Tim!
-
Ok I got to talk with some of you over the weekend. So everybody is aware of the arrangements I made for us to stay in Sault Ste.Marie Ontario on Friday night. This will allow us to get to know each othe some and for us to have a meal we won't have to cook prior to going to camp. Also if there are any forgotten item we'll be able to get them in the Sault. Like Labatts Blue right Rick! LOL!! We are all going to meet at the visitors center parking area by the Macinac Bridge Friday afternoon around 2-3PM. then we'll caravan across the border to the motel. From there Saturday morning to camp then a week of bears, bows, and boisterous fun.
Here we go ! Crunch Time!
-
Here is a new pic from one of the baits.
-
Looks and sounds great LeRoy. Cant wait to go, talk at you in a couple weeks.
Jesse
-
Lookin froward to a great hunt with you all.
-
Anybody have any idea how big the bear was that made the track in the pic?
-
Getting closer! Be careful sharpening them braodheads guys!!! I found out how sharp mine were the other night. Opened myself up but good! Thank goodness for superglue. gonna try to shoot some tonight and test it out.

Yes, I'm here, just found the thread. Been busy so havent been on the forum as much as I would like.
LeRoy, I finally found the pics of your new bow. Very Nice.
I've been shooting just about every night and trying to figure out what to pack.
I can't wait to spend some time in the woods with some some of my fellow Trad Gangers. :campfire:
Getting a little nervous and a little excited. It'll be nice to be in a camp where I'm not the only one without wheels on my bow.
-
Well it isn't going to be much longer Mike. Thanks for the comments on the bow. you'll get a chance to shoot it I'm sure.
I have already packed and unpacked at least 3 times.
-
WOOOOHOOOOO, won't be long fella's!!!! The wife and I got home day before last, from a whale of a Harley ride out west...5120 miles worth!!! Even saw an Idaho blackbear!!!!! Gonna git the bow out this evening, and get in the backyard stand...time to git after it!!!!!
-
Best be jumpin on it Brad. I know I have been spending alot of time in my backyard stand.
-
I'll be hitting 2 3D shoots a week until we leave. Good practice, and I just love shooting 3D
My club has a weekly league that you can shoot on 2 nights. Both ground level and tree stand shots. Unfortunatly I've yet to see another trad shooter on the course.
They also have a course with sand pits for a BH league. I'm going to be hitting those as well.
What do you guys prefer for bear 2, 3 or 4 blade broadheads?
-
Mike I am going to be shooting.....Depending on which tunes up better either Snuffers, or Simmons Intersceptor 4 blades. You will want a multi blade head that will make a big hole. Fall bears have alot of fat and hair that will plug the wound.
-
Leroy...dont let that mojo get in the way when you unzip one of those big black bears...good luck man..
-
No way Steve that will not happen. Been shooting with it attached to my glove strap since it got here.
-
I'll be using the Snuffers meself! I leave for Wyoming Speedgoats on aug 25, will be a nice warmup for this bear hunt!!!!
-
It's starting to look like I'll be shooting Snuffers also Brad. I'm having some trouble getting my Simmons to tune up!
-
Gotta love them Snuffers....nice big gaping chest wounds!!!!!
-
LeRoy is now a snuffer convert? Just keep walking towards the light buddy. I'll have ya shooting a zipper next! :readit: :saywhat:
-
Sorry, life has been/is very hectic around here lately. I think I've got things tuned pretty well. I'll be shooting my ballistik with carbon arrows tipped with Woodsman BHs.
I have my treestand setup, and been getting some shots from it as much as possible.
later,
Carl
-
Good to hear from you Carl! Think I have things pretty well sorted out also. Last night I found 2 broadhead and arrow combos that will shoot well for me. Now for the coin toss....Will it be the Snuffers on the Easton 500's or the Intersceptors on the Easton 400's ?
-
It's gittin closer, ya'll!!! I even went down the street yesterday, and picked up a 6 pack of ice cold Labatt's Blue bottles, just to practice up!!!! Purty good stuff, eh!!!!! Been shootin everyday, even though it's hotter'n heck here right now...Leave this next sat, aug 25, for Wyoming antelope...can't wait!!!!
-
I'd go snuffer,,Just my .02
-
So Brad....How did the practice on the Labatts turn out? EH!
-
LABATTS????? man, a true Canadian wanna-be drinks MOLSON CANADIAN or MOOSEHEAD.... ;) :)
-
EEK, I've tried da Molson...didn't really care for that...will have to find some Moosehead, eh!!!
Leroy, I kinda likes dat Labatt's!!!
-
moosehead is good beer....all ya gotta do is find a local handy "beer store"( and that is what they are called up here.. ;) ) and they will sell ya as many "two-fours" as you want.
Good luck boys.
Labatts is for young kids and women up here... ;)
-
Moosehead! The Canadian answer to Tecate! LOL!!
-
Maybe I'll just stick to da Crown Royal, eh!!!
-
Why is it I can picture some interesting video?
-
What happens at bear camp stays at bear camp.
Jesse
-
ROTFLMAO!!
-
Are we there yet?
-
LeRoy, what day will we leave up there...to head home??? Aug 15???
-
You mean Sept 15th Brad? Yep we get into camp on the 8th and depart on the 15th in the AM.
-
lol, Yea, September...Thanks!!!
-
Blame it on the anticipation Buddy!
-
ttt
-
Got the rest of my arrow parts today, I am about to commence arrow building.
I started a bear hunt inspired back quiver. Aside from a simple knife sheath, its my first real attempt at leather work. It should be done in a few days. I'll post some pics when its complete.
-
Cool Mike! Lookin forward to seeing that one. I'll be doin the grocery trip this weekend and have the Portehouse steaks ordered from the meat locker that I'll pick up on the 4th along with my dry icefor the long trip up.
-
Well I'm all done tuning. the final combo will be 30" Easton Excel 500s and 145 grain Snuffers! That combo flys well out of both of the bows I plan to take on the trip. A little more treestand practice and I'm set. Let the sharpening begin.
-
I'm still fine tuning. I tend to be a little shapening impaired. Thats going to influence my final broadhead selection.
-
I ordered the new X Blok sharpening system, that I read about in TBM, a few months back...that, coupled with a nice piece of leather, have my Snuffers poppin hair off me arm!!! I'll have it in camp if anyone wants to try thier hand at it!!!
I've got 3 targets set in me backyard, and a 15' ladder stand, and have been shooting from it every evening that I can...it's alot easier when the daughter is home to fetch arrahs for me, instead of climbing down so much....lol
I leave for Wyoming antelope, this sat am early, be gone for a week, then home about 3 days before we head for LeRoy's place!!!
-
Thanks for the info on the XBlok Brad. I may hve to bring one that hasn't been sharpened with me to camp to try it out.
-
Finally got a weekend off so it's gonna be filled with preparations for the hunt. Time to get all my clothes in order and groceries purchased. I'll probably be talking to all of you in the next week.
-
Ten days left guys! Remember when the count was at 66 days! Wow it's coming up on us fast now!
-
Guys I just checked the extended forecast for the area we'll be in....highs in the high 60's to low 70's and lows in the 40's and 50's.
-
Sounds like perfect weather.
Rick
-
That's kinda what I thought too Rick. I'm gonna check it one more time on the 4th to see if I am going to take any cool weather clothing. Now if it will just stay dry all week, or at least only rain at night.
-
8! Were at 8 days!!
-
Good luck boys! soon we will be heading wayyyyyy north of where you guys are heading, be prepared for cold, rain, heat, bugs, maybe snow... ;)
go to this site www.weathernetwork.ca (http://www.weathernetwork.ca) punch in Blind River...it will give you a detailed forecast for the area for up to 14 days from now.
BD
-
I'm just packing for all possibilities. I figure that as long as I don't have to carry it on my back for a week, why not!
Can't wait,
Carl
-
I may need to buy a bigger tote box. Good thing Brad's bringin the trailer! LOL
-
Looks like I'm going with the Razorcaps for my broadhead of choice.
I reviewed all the how-to's and finally was able to get one shaving sharp. Woo Hoo!! Now if I could just find the WW's I bought last year and never used.
My final setup is:
Bear Grizzly 50#@28", Easton Legacy 2016's topped with the 125G Razorcaps.
Does anyone have a preference of marinade for the beer can chickens? I was thinking of going with the Teriaki and Herb&Garlic. These seem to be the crowd favorites at the family BBQ's.
I was emailing Tim at Ituksum and he said they have been seeing bears but have not had any taken yet. That should bump our odds even more.
-
Good that many more for us!
-
Just heard from Tim. This week he has 7 guys in camp all but one have seen bears. he is processing one now and three others were missed shots. All Wheelie guys.
-
Correction to the above post...I thought it was wheelie shooter making the misses. Turns out it was rifle hunters. Three guys missed bears at 63,40 and 12yards with guns a total of 5 times.
-
hey Leroy dont ya go and get eaten now :biglaugh:
-

Thats just sad. Makes me wonder if these guys had ever been to a rifle range.
-
Nerve I'm guessin. Timm said they were all dead on at the range. Oh well! Us Trad guys will have to go up and show them how it's done. LMAO!!!!!
-
I talked to Timm this morning. One of the misses was with a blackpowder rifle. Powder got wet and the gun just went pfff. That guy did get another shot at the same bear but shot low.
He also said the bear are coming in during the day. Several baits are being hit from 10:30am to 1:00pm.
One guy hasn't seen a bear, but has video of moose and a Lynx.
Can't wait,
Carl
-
As much as I would love to fill a bear tag, just seeing a lynx would make my week. I've never seen a wild cat in the woods.
Same for the moose. I've seen a few moose while driving around near my cabin but thats it. I'd love to just see one while sitting in the stand.
Are we there yet?
...
Are we there yet?
...
Are...
-
I know, I am ready to go.
It's good that I have a week though. I came down with a nasty cold yesterday. I just sat in my office feeling myself getting sicker. It was too much to hope for that I would miss catching this as it ran through every person in our family.
At least I didn't come downwith it the day I was leaving.
Carl
-
That happened to me the last time I headed up. 2 days prior to leaving came down with tonsilitis and spent my week in camp with a really sore throat and major antibiotics.
-
I just got an e-mail from Tim at Ituksum-
" Hi Carl just getting back in from looking for a big bear but no luck the guy made a bad shot on it,he said that he was very excited being that he's shot bears before but not that big.Yes I have a grill here for you's to use.
See you soon..."
I think this is the second one lost by a rifle hunter this week. kinda sad.
Leroy-
I never got that confirmation number from you.
Later,
Carl
-
OOPS! I'll call you with it today.
-
Confirmation number?
Something we need for the trip or something else? Not trying to be nosey, just making sure I didn't miss something.
-
I'm gonna be calling everybody with the conformation # for the rooms in Sault Ste. Marie for Friday night.
-
Howdy fellers!!! Just rolled in from Wyoming antelope huntin....yup, scored!!! I'm primed even more for those bear up north, eh!!!!! The Snuffers are da best, fo sho...
-
He Shoot..He Scores.. and the crowd goes wild! WWWWAAAAAAA!!!!!!
-
Brad I got your room and food all setup for Wednesday.
-
LeRoy,
Do you know if there is a coffe pot already there? I have my smallish (8 cup) ready to go just in case there is not one.
Rick
-
I have my old percolator packed for the trip Rick.
-
Sounds good - mine is an old stove top perc - between the two we should be able to keep some coffee going.
-
So is mine Rick. We'll keep em supplied! Carl has the conformation number for the rooms in case you beat us there.
-

-
Brad you can take a case for you and one for Brenda. Not sure what we can bring back.
-
Visions of bears are clouding my head.
In camp we will meet and talk and break bread.
The arrows are built and tuned with great care.
All the broadheads are sharpened and slice through the air.
The stuff is all packed sealed up good
All that is left is to head for the woods.
-
Very Cool Mike!
-
Love it Mike!!!
-
Stand, climbin sticks, camo, boots, bow, arrahs, gotta touch up snuffers after last trip, bug suit, thermacell, fishin pole, beer, food, wife, rain gear, camera, medicine, sleepin bag, pillow, knife, safety harness, coffee...

-
No typo Bud! Mrs. Harriman is coming along to enjoy the fishin.
-
Oh crap...there goes the "hunt-camp" stories....lol!!! :) ;)
BD
-

Wait just a minute now, there's bugs in Canada? That was not in the contract :readit:
HaHa, looks like it will be somewhat cool 50-60's (or high teens depending on your unit of choice). That should help with the bugs a little.
After much searching I finally found my old thermocel. Looks like it still works. Got a couple of refils and I'm good to go.
-
On my way to pick up the steaks in a few minutes.
-
No passport for me - I have to go with original birth certificate.
-
8 Porterhouse steaks in hand and now on to finish packing. Brad I'll see you tomarrow Bud! Everybody else....see ya in a couple days.
-
All the best guys...and GALS! :) I hope to see alot of pics and alot of stories.
Knock 'em down!
BD
-
We'll do our best Thanks Big Dog!! Hope one of your arrows finds the sweet spot on a moose also!
-
If not a moose...it will be finding a bear for sure! :)
BD
-
Thanks Big Dog...LeRoy, I'm hungry already!!!!!
-
You won't be after tomarrow nights feast.
-
Ya keep cookin like dat, we'll keep ya in camp...LOL!!!
-
Gladly if I can tag out early.
-
Alright....I like me hang on type stands, and the climbin stiks....How many stands are ya'll taking...1 or 2??? Have 2 set out, but am leanin towards 1...Only have one set of stiks, if ya have to move those, move the stand too?????????
-
I'm only takin 1. If I need to move it I'll move it.
-
That's what I was thinkin...will do the same!
-
How bouts a broadhead target...anybody bringin one, is there one in camp we can use???????
-
There is a 3D and a broadhead target in camp.
-
Good deal....how bout orange..vest AND hat?, or what???
-
Yep hat and vest
-
Aight!!!
-
I'm taking one stand, a very basic 15' ladder stand.
Do the cabins have eating utensiles? plates, bowls, forks, etc?
As I normally do this close to departure for a long trip, I'm starting to panic  . Knowing I'll forget something vital. Second guessing everything I have packed and have yet to pack. I guess as long as I have my bow, one arrow and my food I'll be able to hunt and not be pummeled to death by my cabin mates. :bigsmyl: LOL
Are we still on target to meet at 2-3pm on the N side of the bridge at the visitors center?
-
Nevermind on the utensil question, I found the info I needed on their web page.
-
All furnished Mike. That's the plan Buddy!
-
I blasted awake, in the middle of the nite last nite, wondering about the utensils meself...LOL!! Soon as I can git this pile of stuff stuffed in the truck, I'm outta here!!! Everyone drive safe, LeRoy, I'll see ya in a little while!!!!!
-
Carl and I will see you guys at the motel on Friday.
Rick
-
Got a little surprise for you all. Another TG member from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario...."bearfootin" is gonna meet us at the motel Friday night and has invited us all to his place for pizza and beer Friday night. Many Thanks Lloyd.
-
:bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
-
almost done just have to get my fishin stuff together.
-
Pizza, beer and bear hunting with some fishing thrown in for good measure - I think I have died and gone to heaven.
-
Good luck guys. I wish you all well and a prosperus trip!!
-
Rick you got that one right! We are goin to God's Country. Wait til you guys get a look at the scenery.
Tim, Thanks much my friend!
-
Just talked to Jesse on the phone. He is on his way through the Idaho mountains as I type.
-
Hey there buddy, get a big one. Grace wants pics!
-
She'll have em Bud! Take care of them ribs.
-
hey Leroy be safe lets see some pics when ya come back. :wavey: :campfire:
-
Thanks Jeffy! Pics to come soon!
-
Well Brad and Brenda just left my house for the motel after a big supper. Tomarrow morning well be off!
-
Good luck everyone. And we will expect some updates!
-
Thanks Chad! I'll be callin ya.
-
GOOD LUCK...don't forget a few things...do not go to a beer store and ask for a 24 case.
ask for a "two-four"
don't forget to say "eh", saying "huh" is a dead giveaway...LOL
you can buy Thermacell refills up here, but it is the driest summer in 50 years in Ontario, bugs are not bad, swamps are low/gone, berries are poor...bears WILL be looking for food!
and last but not least...Poutine is awesome, get some!!
BD ;0 :)
-
Good to know Cary! Thanks! What the heck is Poutine?
-
Ask for it at a resturant...you'll love it.
Fries, covered with mozzarella cheese or better yet, fresh curd, smothered in gravy to melt the cheese....mmmmmm:)
another thing, if lost for conversation, ask who is a fave to get the the play-offs, the Senators or the Leafs...THAT will guarantee!!!! conversation! LOL ;)
-
Wow!!! May I have a double order!!
-

BD
-
Did you get your fill of wide open places???? I was just checking in my pocket ref book...California has more people than ALL of Canada, LOL, so it must have been nice to have wide open spaces to roam with no people around ??? ;)
BD
-
Well it was kinda a rough week. We had weather issues to deal with(constantly changing),very little bear movement for the first few days. Then in one day it all broke loose........
-
Changing weather????? in northern Ontario???? NAWWWWWW, come on LeRoy, you gotta be kidding me... ;) ;) :p :smileystooges:

The first 3 nights in stand were pretty slow. Tuesday when Brad and I headed out to hunt we decided he would come in and bait while I got in my stand. When we got to my bait it had not been hit again! So I got into the stand and Brad hung the bait we brought with us in a tree about 5ft above the grond. Then he took a few pics and headed back out to the truck. As I listened to the sound of the truck fade I just had a feeling that it was gonna be a good day.
-
good move there guys, wearing running shoes...easier to outrun a booted-buddy that way... ;) ;) :p :goldtooth:
Keep 'em coming LeRoy.
BD
-
Before I get to far I do want to send a HUGE Thank You to one of our own. Bearfootin aka Lloyd Keene was kind enough to invite us all to his home when we got to Sault Ste. Marie Ontario on Friday night for pizza and beverages. Great guy! Heck we even had the pizza delivery guy sit down and have one with us. Many Many Thanks for a great time Lloyd!!
-
well???? are you a Canadian-beer afficiando now?? :)
BD
-
I think we all are! LOL!!
-
OK! Back to the stand on Tuesday afternoon....Soon the bush was all quiet again. Then it started the attack of the bait killin pine squirrels! They were all over and fighting each other and the chipmunks for their spot on the bait. Then they were joined by a big ole rabbit. While I sat and watched the show almost laughing out loud a couple times, little did I know that things were about to get interesting fast!
-
see any wolves?? or hear them?
BD
-
I did see one and heard them one day in the distance.
Anyway....Then it happened! There were a pair of good sized cubs on the bait! Ok......Where is you're momma? Then there she was of to my lefta at about 7 yards in the brush watching the kids. As the cubs ate and battled each other for their share I got ready and tryed to remain calm. Momma then started to move in, and quickly spyed the bait bag Brad had hung in the tree. She came in sat down and raised up in a sitting position grabbed the bag and took off to my left again at about 7 yards to eat. after finishing here snack she came back to the bait and came in behind the cubs giving me a full broadside.
It all happened so fast! I drew released and wtched the arrow with the Simmons Landshark 160 zip right through her. She didn't even act like anything had happened. From there it's long story short. The hit was too high and the blood trail ran out so we never found her even after getting everybody out for a long walk in the Canadian Bush. That's one I'll be thinking about for a very long time to come!!
-
Sounds like you went thru "no-man's land", that area below the spine and above the goodies, kind of a void area, if the blood ran out, I'm betting she will recover, she will just be a bit more educated! ;)
Too bad on that one LeRoy, but I did hit a deer in that area once, some blood, then nothing, not a drop, nothing vital to keep bleeding.

-
That's kinda what we thought too Cary. Still, it's gonna bug me for a long time.
-
Meanwhile, in another part of the Canadian wilderness some 10 miles away from the action, I was sitting in a tightly nestled group of pine trees a mere 10 – 12 yards from my bait. It was a very active bait with many Pope and Young squirrels, chipmunks, mice and birds voraciously attacking the sweet smelling and sweeter tasting (yeah I had to try out the bait for myself) bait pile. 6:55 p.m. found me deep into a book about Daniel Boone and his exploits when I had that feeling that something was different in the woods. It was!
-
Come on Rick, were waiting!
-
Looking behind me and to my right I noticed a rather large black shape slowly making its way to the bait. The trail would take it right behind me and then to my left toward the bait. I waited till it passed me on the left and put my book and glasses (yeah I need glasses to read) away and readied for a shot. When it was about 5 yards from the bait and just a few yards away from me it suddenly stopped and bolted like it was showered in boiling water. It was then that I heard what the bear heard, and it did not sound very nice.
-
was it Leroy?, yellin' at himself???? ;) ;) :p
-
Nope!! Not even close!
-
sorry to hear about your lost bear LeRoy! hopefully she did survive and the cubs will be okay. did anyone in your group kill a bear? like to see some pictures and maybe a story or two about the equipment used.
-
Somebody else yelling at Leroy?
-
:smileystooges: :smileystooges: :bigsmyl:
-
From deeper in the woods to my right I heard loud growling, popping and other various nasty sounds and I thought – here comes an even bigger bear – my anticipation of the impending letting of blood was heightened. Within a few minutes I was able to pick up the padding of bear feet headed toward the bait. Sure enough here comes the bear – A CUB!!! Now I know it was momma that was making the sounds and she still in the bush. Booboo was tearing away at the bait and I was looking for mama and I noticed a big, black, four legged creature moving toward the bait from a different direction of her cub. Unfortunately, this time she was down wind of me and sure enough she caught my wind, rose and pivoted on her hind legs and bolted. In short order she had circled the bait and was in the bush on the opposite side of the bait trying to convince her cub to abandon the bait and join her. About 30 minutes after hitting the bait the cub wandered off. Exciting, but no shot.
But that is not the end of the evening.
-
I saw two squirrels!
-
With BooBoo and momma gone, and about 45 minutes of shooting light left, the woods quieted down, the small creatures came back to the bait to see what easy pickings were available. I sat on stand, reviewed the excitement of the previous few minutes and figured now would be a good time for that other bear, that was run off right and the start, to come back and wipe out the rest of the bait. With only 15 minutes of shooting light left, coming from the same direction as it first headed toward the bait, here comes the bear!!
-
Walking with confidence and not fearful of anything in the woods the bear padded onward to the bait. It was the cub again, but this time I did not see mom. Light was rapidly fading and I found myself located between a cub on bait and mom somewhere in the woods behind me. In an effort to get the cub off the bait I broke sticks and threw any stick or branch that I could find in the direction of the cub. The cub never flinched and still no sound from mom. In order to get out from the stand I had to walk right between the cub and mom. So I had to decide if I wanted to wait out the cub and leave the woods in total darkness, not having the ability to see anything coming my way, or leave as quickly and quietly as possible while still being able to see forms and shapes in the woods. Knowing that I would not be able to get off a shot if it was too dark, I decided to leave.
By the time I got to the bottom of my stand and knocked an arrow, the cub was still on the bait and still not sure of mom’s location I hit the trail as fast as possible. Fortunately I never saw or heard mom, but had my heart rate up for awhile.
No shot, but great memory!!
Ted – does that remind you of getting Carl off the bait this year at Weitas?
-
Soundin like you fellas had a good time..
Seeya soon Leroy,,Its lookin good in Leota,,Deer sign is great where the big acorns are and we found a fresh buck rub today, Deer sign is looking very promising,,Jason

While I saw no bears during my stay, I saw plenty of beautiful scenery and other critters. Much time was spent joking and sharing stories around the dinner table (We never had a bad meal). Knowledge was shared, new friendships were formed and memories were made.
That in itself made it a successful hunt.
As a side note, I stopped off at my cabin in MI on the way back from Bear camp. Not even a mile from my cabin I saw and was able to tape a beautiful bull moose. I followed him approx 1/4 mile down an old road before he finally took cover in the brush.
-
Glad to see you all made it back in one piece and nobody got ate. Keep the stories coming!
-
Hey that's cool Mike! You're right about the meals and the memories. Great Times with Great People! That itself made it worth the trip.
-
LeRoy, did you fellas forget your CAMERAS???? ;) :smileystooges: :bigsmyl:
