Just returned from another great hunt in Australia. Wish I wasn't so far behind at work - but here are a few pics.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/Dsturgisjr/ChitalStag.jpg
This is a chital stag shot on a stalk at 7 yards. I was hunting at Bill Baker's Toomba in Queensland. I was guided by Grahm Cash, editor of Bowhunting Downunder Magazine.

This is the second water buffalo I shot at Tiwi Isands in the Northern Territory.

This was the first buff I shot. It was extra special because Don Thomas was right behind me taking pictures.

Congrats, Nice pics. What are the specs on the bow used?
-
Going to Australia to hunt would put us all behind in our work Denny. Are the Austrailian buffalo as nasty as the Cape? Beautiful critters.
And...that looks like a Wilson Tab on your right fingers.
George
-
64", 90# Black Widow PLIII with a nice coat of green paint. LOL The Widow guys hate it when I paint their bows.
-
Great pics. I see lots of knife scales on them horns :knothead: . Congrats<><
-
George, I've been around Cape buffalo, but have never hunted them. I would give both species the respect they deserve. Yes, that is the cordovan model tab.
side note: You don't need 90# to cleanly harvest a water buff.
-
Congrats Denny that is awesome.
-
:bigsmyl:
-
Congrats Denny. :clapper:
-
Denny,
Congrats on a great hunt. Did you happen to run into Jay and Karen Campbell while there?
Don Davis
-
Don, Yes we did. Wish we could have visited more, but we took the had to fly back to Darwin on the same plane they chartered in. The hunting was awesome and I'm sure they are having a great time.

Denny, awesome animals.Bear,Pope,Young and some others were pioneers for us.Ithink You,Thomas and some others will be thought of as pioneers in a different time, congrats
-
Denny,
It looks like the hunting was great. Did Brad cook up any of his tasty shore lunches with fresh-caught barra?
-
Well done.
-
Rik, As you know from last year, the buffalo hunting is fantastic on Melville. Toomba is great too. Big, wild and plenty of chital and hogs. The bird life there is incredible also.
Brad did some great cooking in camp, but we never did the shore lunch thing. Probably because I'm not much of a fisherman.
-
Looks as though you guys had a blast. I'm sure I'll here more from Don, Jay and Miss Karen soon. Someday....
-
So, what's the specs on the arrow used to slay such a beast?
-
C'mon Denny,it's gotta be great to be behind at work after that hunt!! Congrats on all!
-
nice job Denny, that stag is pretty nice! congrats.
-
Congrats Denny! What a cool trip!
-
way to go denny cool hunt and pics

Denny, the chital is impressive. I've heard they are one of the wariest deer out there. And of course the buff are always impressive.
When Rik mentioned Brad's shore lunches, I pulled up a couple of pics from one of last years shore lunches. This is Brad and the start of lunch.
And the elaborate cooking utensils.
We ate the fish off of a piece of bark.
BTW, about the picture of Brad, Don and you. It appears you and Don would fit right in with the local Snake Bay residents.
-
If you've clicked on the links Denny provided above, you probably thought you were just seeing an Axis deer, no different from what you could hunt on a ranch in Texas. Piece of cake, right? Wrong.
For those of you who have not yet hunted Chital in wild Australia: they are just a little bit harder to stalk and kill with a bow than Pronghorn. Maybe a little more than just a little bit. . .
To kill both Chital and Big buff on the same hunt, well, that's just about as good as it gets.
-
Awsome buddy,,A true life hunt for sure,,JB
-
Impressive. As always.
-
Denny, Nice work. That is an awesome specimen. Must have benn a memorable Hunt.
-
Congrats Denny :campfire:
-
Rik, I was very lucky on the chital. Lucky Cashy spotted it and lucky the wind was gusting while rain poured down.
Mark, Brad looks like croc bait squating next to the water. LOL
-
Sweeet! thanks for sharin.
-
Congrats Denny, looks like you guys had a great trip. I was talking with your dad at Compton, he mentioned one of the guys with you was trying for buff with a very light bow. How did that go?
-
Smitty was within 3 yards of a big bull and decided not to try after seeing the size and toughness of the buffs.
-
Wow....what a hunt!!! That's what it's all about, Denny. Good for you, man. :campfire:
-
Hope to make a hunt for pigs and Chital down under in the next few years. I don't shoot enough horsepower for buff though
-
Awesome Denny!!!Congrats.
-
Congrats Denny. Are we gonna see the video soon?
I'm trying to get a hunt worked out for next year...still got the Africa bug too bad this year :) . Brady
-
What broadhead did you use. Mike
-
I used 770 grain Beman MFX shafts with Wensel Woodsmans for the chital and Zwickey prototype heads for the buffs.
-
Good to see you had fun here . Its a pity we dont see more of us using the stick and string to take these great beasts .
-
Welcome back bud...congratulations!!! Great pix :clapper:
-
Congratulations, looks like you got a pass through on Buff #1, correct?
-
hey man nice shooting as allways. congrats
-
Man, that looks like fun!
-
Way too go Denny!!! Nice Buff. Welcome home amigo!
Best, Peter
-
Good Stuff !
-
Jay and Karen Campbell are enroute back to New Mexico - e-mailing from San Francisco airport.
Karen took an 89" score buffalo with one 1020 grain arrow from a 70# longbow. Maybe the first woman to so so, but I'm not sure how one finds such things out. Great time with Don Thomas, guides Brad Kane and Dan Smith, and all of us sending cheers to Billy Baker, who is a bit under the weather, the owner of pacific Bowhunting safaris. Karen caught a few Barramundi as well, which made for a grand buffalo and barramundi dinner in camp. I did OK for an old guy. :-) - Jay Campbell.
-
Jay, You know the rules..post the pics for everyone. Make sure to include one of Don T since you said he has "gone feral"
-
Congrats Karen!! You go girl!! :)
Jay, Glad you blokes had a great hunt. Wish I could have stayed another week.
-
Awesome pics. I've seen you in TBM and some pics here on TG and now I see that you shot a 90# longbow on this hunt. Just one question, after the kill did you just grab that buff by one horn and drag him back to the truck? :notworthy:
Thanks for sharing.
-
If this photobucket thing works, pictures should be here of Karen and Jay Campbell's Oz Buffalo from last week - July, 2007 - Jay Campbell, JD

Great looking buffs. That is so cool. More details when you get caught up please.
-
Karen, Congrats! 70# longbow is more than I've pulled...and to shoot it accurately!!! We're not worthy, we're not worthy!!!! :notworthy:
:clapper:
-
Wow, congratulations! Just tonight I read a nice story in the latest Bowhunter about Karen's first bow kill on a hog in Florida. The story ends with "...Karen had a hunter's heart". Now she is killing big water buffs in Australia? I'd say that last sentence in the story was pretty accurate.
Hope I can graduate to big water buffs someday!
-
Karen, who never hunted, picked up the longbow 3 years ago from a background as a concert pianist, 3rd degree black belt in shotokon, a glider pilot, and a medical database programmer. She became my partner and wife, and we run a medical consulting firm.
She shoots Adcock bows, as OL and Juli are friends of ours in NM, and the performance is outstanding. The dog ate one, so we're down to three right now. She used my 75# hummingbird Kingfisher as her back-up bow. I shot a 80# BW PLX.
Can't even describe how varied and exciting and difficult the opportunities were for stalks, but she and Guide Brad Kane put it together the second night.
Can't wait to go back. Those OZ boys needed a little feminine mystique in that bush camp. :-) - Jay Campbell

Great pics and stories guys and gals. Looks like everyone had a great time and memoriable hunts.
BTW I have tried stalking the Axis here in Texas and they are by far the toughest animal to stalk I have ever hunted. It is like they have a sixth sense or something. Spookiest deer I have had the pleasure to hunt. Still have not got one. Hope to this year.

Denny, Thanks for sharing with us. Always enjoy seeing pics. I'll bet the fellows & gals @ Black Widow will get over your painting the bows. Frank
