Shot this doe the last week of the season in Maryland. A late season doe sometimes feels as good as a buck in November.
-
Opening evening here in Nebraska along the eastern Platte River and I was able to tag this jake as he and a pal worked over a jake decoy. I was set up on a travel route often used to access a roost area about 100 yards away, but these birds were working away fast--apparently toward another roost area--when I got a little aggressive with my calling and they came a running.
First bird I've taken through the netting of my Double Bull. All the activity was at 5 yards so it was a pretty cool show. Pronghorn longbow. One of my poorest success pics but I got him late and had to take down all my stuff and I didn't want to take pics on-site for fear of boogering up the roost area.

Nice kills Tradgang,
this 1st one was a 300xtreme test volunteer, never works out for the volunteers :p
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w27/kingwouldbe/Hog/P1010045-1.jpg)
The 2nd is a Tradgang equipment hog, Bow, broadheads, binoculars, pack, knife etc... was all provided by the Gang, after 90% of my hunting gear was stolen.

I posted this earlier and I messed up on resizing, sorry. Shot this little piggy in Texas on the last day of the hunt right at dark. I know he's small but he ate good. Shot another right at dark 3 days earlier and didn't find it before the coyotes did.

these things are so much fun to hunt!
-
Hey Terry, nice doe. :wavey: I wish we had a late season in Ontario but we usually have so much snow it would be hard getting out!!
-
Nice javelinas, Andy. I am going to have to try that some time.
-
Spring bear has now opened here in Oregon...I found a old ridge road last year that the bear used heavily...If they use it again this year I will have a good shot at taking one with my recurve..
No baiting here which makes it tougher...
3 mile hike to the top of the gated logging road...
This is it...Road goes out the top of the ridge and forks out to 2 old landings..Last year at the end of April I counted 44 piles of bear sign in a half mile along this road..That is what gave me the idea for tree standing this road..
I set up the stand at the forks..
Cleared the shooting lanes ,took several practice shots and deployed the trailcam..
Stay tuned for reports...Season is open until the end of May..For good luck I am using my Bear Kodiak and Bear razorheads...Bear for a Bear...LOL
-
Good luck bud....sounds like a great opportunity
can't wait for updates!!
-
Got back up there today...Hiked out some of the other ridge roads in my area just checking them out...Bear tracks everywhere...Going and coming on every ridge road...
That got me plenty excited...I headed out the ridge to my ladder stand and while I was seeing lots of tracks on the other roads, mine didn't have any...LOL
About a hundred yards from the stand I did see this though..
Good enough cause along side my spring bear tag I have a cougar tag keeping it company...
I got in my stand about 1:00 and settled in for the afternoon/evening hunt..
Dry run today..Lots of tracks but nothing came by...I didn't even get the longtail on the trailcam...He must have taken the upper road cause the cam is on the lower.. :banghead: :banghead:
I have until the end of May...
-
Best of luck to ya. Looks like you have an excellent spot.
When I was stationed in WA I used to love hiking or mountain biking back into the gated areas.
-
You packed that ladder stand better than three miles? Your the MAN!
-
Santiam,
That's awesome what part of oregon are you in?
Bob
-
Cool pics, thanks for taking us along.
By accident, I found a better way to carry my ladder stands in and out. I wish I had a picture, but I nested and lashed togather all the ladder pieces with the top portion which has a curve to it. I then flipped it so that curved portion near the seat is facing down (in other words the seat portion is facing to the ground) with the ladder portions extended out at about a 45-degree angle. Then I simply walked through the grass, leaves, etc. and there was almost no friction whatsoever. And it's streamlined so it could fit through spots with about 2' of clearance. You didn't need that kind of clearance along that road, and in your case, with a road and some rocks, I'd think a simple set of tires that could be fed through the apparatus or something would make it an easier task.
Either way, nobody can say you didn't work hard to make this hunt happen. Good luck and thanks again for sharing the pics.
-
Hey Bob,
I am hunting over near Mapleton..
Actually, packing the stand wasn't as bad as I thought it would be..Pretty easy really...It is worth the pack because I am uncomfortable in hang ons...I feel safer in a solid ladder stand...
Back after them Thursday...
-
Good luck bud
-
Found this about a hundred yards from my stand...Fresh,fresh..But then the weather turned nasty and nothing showed again...My brother was over on the next ridge and had a bobcat walk right up to him,but no bear....Waiting for better weather now...
-
This is the central Oregon coast range..Steep,brushy and tough to hunt...Ax men country..
I didn't sit in the tree this afternoon..Instead,I put on my felt sneaks and slipped along some ridge roads...Right now the bear are feeding the roadside grass and I was trying to catch one...Bear tracks and sign was everywhere..
The only thing I saw today was a big ol blacktail shed..
-
Dang Bill your killing me with the picks, It's been way to long since I have been back there. I can still smell the forest in my memories.
We hunted the Cummins Creek area and loved it. Good luck Bill and congrats on the nice shed.
Tracy
-
Bill, thanks for sharing the picks. good luck on the bears. Ed
-
Thanks guys, I guess no one else is hunting??..I thought the turkey hunters woud be posting reports by now...
Anyway here is my hunt report..
My treestand location is not producing...Last year it was the hot ridge but they just are not using it this year....Deader than heck...Other ridges in the area have lots of sign so I went off to find a new spot....
Last week I walked out a old blocked off ridge road scouting it out and there were several tracks on it...The bear have been busy out there since last week....Several new piles on the road and you could easily see where they have been grazing the roadside grass..
The tracks from last week had been rained out,but plenty of new ones to take their place..
I don't even have to move my tree stand...I plan on a stand at the top of the bank...This road is on top of the ridge and it is straight off both sides...It connects another large ridge and the bears are using to travel from one ridge to the other..
The bears have won round 1...Its time for round 2..
:readit: :readit: :readit:

That's a Nice Hog.
Good Luck with that Bear hunt... Great Pic's.
-
Nice pigs...Sometimes I wish we had pigs, but probably better we don't...Fish and game don't want them for sure...
I tried an afternoon stand, but the wind turned on me so I went sneaking instead...
Hoping for a better wind Thursday afternoon...
-
Billy, Does that road turn right below ya? Looks like a great spot to spend some time in...
This is great here, but I wish you would have had this as a thread on it's own and just keep updating it. I think more folks would see it that way. Some don't even check this thread.
Your on-going bear thread is great here, but would be even better on it's own...
Good luck Bill...really enjoy
hunting along with ya...
-
Santiam, how long have you had your old Bear bow ? Great pics and stories !!
-
Santiam,Keep after them. Good luck
-
Good luck tomorrow Bill and thanks for keeping this hunt going. :coffee:
-
Hey Curt,
Kinda thought the daily hunt reports went on the daily hunt report thread.. :campfire: :campfire: :campfire:
That road goes out and forks beyond where you can see ..It does hook right back behind me...It is hard to see but it goes off steep and deep, both sides of the road...It is basicly the ridge top...I am hoping to catch traveling bears using it from one ridge to the other...According to the tracks I was seeing they are using it..
Thanks for the luck guys...The bear hunting just keeps getting better as the season goes on...The weather hasn't been the best,YET!!!
My buddy bought that Kodiak back in 1974 right out of high school...I had a Wing Gull and he bought it so he could hunt with me...After only a year the compounds called to him and it was in his closet for many years...I finally bought it from him about 10 years ago...His kids had put a small ding on the edge of the limb...It has just started to look worse so on the advice Bowdoc I am not going to shoot it until I can get some attention to it...
Good thing I have a WHOLE bunch of bows...LOL I did want to shoot a bear with it though... :archer:
-
I've been silently watching your bear hunt-a-long. Great pics and story..have a great hunt.
-
Nice hogs King  :notworthy: Looks like your shooting that bow pretty darn good.
Tracy
-
I got down there about noon...Sat in my stand for 3 hours or so..
I watched the wind bow UP the road, then DOWN the road...It blew THIS way, then THAT way..I was SURE that everything in the area knew exactly where I was...LOL
Took off sneaking the little roads again...
About 4:00 I looked down and, BEAR!!!
Zoomed in..
Pretty sure it is a sow...
Anyway,I know better, but decided to try a stalk...Had to go back to the top, cross over to her side of the ridge and drop in on her...She looks like she is in the open, but it is a small area and there are several hundred yards of nasty coast brush and STEEP ground to get down to her...Took about 40 minutes and she was gone..Probably just fed on out...Even if she was still there it would have still been a impossible shot..There never was much of a chance, but hey,ya gotta try... :bigsmyl:
Hard climb back to the top...
Hiked on out to another road I wanted to sneak..Only about 1/2 hour light left...I just started out when I spotted a bear walking toward me on the road...He seemed to spot me about the same time, but didn't seem to know what I was...
He just stood there for the longest time, about 60 yards or so, just watching...It was getting dark and I had to do something,so I kissed at him a couple times...Well,he didn't like that, turned, went back up the road a bit, then dropped off..I hurried up there and peeked over the edge...I could see bits of him through the brush, but just not enough to shoot at...He was kinda on the small side anyway...
Best day yet..
:bigsmyl:
-
This is getting good.
Jack
-
Bill, Your absolutely right! But when you kill one, start a thread on pow wow
I'm sure looking forward to more bud
-
Hey Bill, Any more bear action???
-
Hey Bill,
Will be back after them next weekend...Have honey do's this weekend and can't get out.....I told her that it could wait until June, but that didn't work.. :knothead: :D

This javelina was shot in West Texas on a hunt sponsored by Kent Ostrem of Mahaska bows (Also a TragGang sponsor). This boy is big, about 62lbs. The cool thing is that I got him with a bow Kent made from wood on this ranch where I got the javelina. The bow has a cat claw handle and arroyo limbs. 58", 47# @ 26".
Those teeth are razor sharp. They are one tough animal.
Kent is a great guy and a superb boyer. If you are interested in a javelina hunt, book one with Mahaska.

Todd, Joe and Tim GOOD WORK!!!
Bill did you get that bear yet???
-
Good to see some succes..Congrats and great pics...
Bill,
I have slowed down a bit...Work has picked up and the weather has turned lousy...It is 75 miles to my area and it is a waste of gas in bad weather..I have went down some and it was more of the same...
I did have a blacktail doe walk under my stand, which gave me some hope on the swirling winds...Also there are not many deer in my area, probbly more bears than deer...LOL ..You can see her looking at me through the trees..She busted me getting my camera out..
Lots of action on the trailcam...Mostly all of bears...The only nonbear pic was of a bobcat...No deer on the camera...Thats why I was surprised when a deer came under...
This is a good boar I believe...He looks wet...
The weather is sposed to improve this afternoon and I have found a new spot for my tree stand...I am heading down to move it and hunt the afternoon...Leaving in a bit...I also have a new to me Kodiak hunter I am taking...That is bound to change my luck...
I will at least post a pic of my new location tonite...It is a cool spot, lots of sign and a good spot for wind direction I hope...
-
Good luck Bill-waiting on the rest of the story...
-
(http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g56/huntit/unsorted134.jpg)
Got both of these hawgs with same shot. Hunted with Curtis at 7th Age in Texas last week.
-
(http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g56/huntit/unsorted007.jpg)
Another sow bagged on same hunt.
-
The weather has been horrible the last week or so putting a damper on the bear hunting, but I did get my ladder stand moved a couple days ago and sat in it last night...
This doe couldn't believe her eyes...LOL I had the stand tied on my pack...She obviously couldn't figure out what kind of strange creatue was walking by..
All set up in the new spot...I have more confidence in this spot...It is in a saddle and the wind direction is much more stable..
That is my new to me Kodiak that I just got from a fellow Tradganger...Shes a beauty...
Nothing came by last night...I don't stay untill full dark...I don't really want to shoot that late on a work night...About a half hour before dark I climbed down...
Just getting to the truck and what do I see...A bear...
Apparently it was walking the road, came upon the truck, looked at it a minute and turned and walked back the way it came...The truck is parked in the wide spot to the right just out of the pic... I lightend up the pic quite a bit..It was to dark to shoot...
-
That looks like a good bear.
Jack
-
Just a matter of time Bill...very cool!
-

-
Great pic's everyone.... keep them coming.
-
Wow! Cograts, everybody! I really enjoy looking at the bear hunt photos - good luck!
-
We had a lot of rain on Friday and the river came up alot and the weather cooled off. My daughter Brier and I headed down to the river hoping to find a nice carp or maybe even a buffalo to eat, but the only fish working the shallows were gar. We had a good time and even managed to get an arrow in a couple. Here's a picture of my best girl and the morning's catch.

Some mighty fine animals there Steve

Have not figured out how to add pics yet but have no fear for they are coming. Waiting for 5/26 DNREC meeting to confirm Delaware's first turkey by stickbow. Taken at twenty paces with a 61# PMA and a Razorcap. Believe it or not it was my first attempt. I'm not a softie, but couldn't help getting a little choked up. All of my compound toting friends were thinking I was crazy. They all hunted with shotguns with no luck. Now I'm the man.
-
Damn Steve............
WOW! =0)

Thanks to everyone for sharing their hunts.

Oh boy!!!!!
-
How did this end????
-
Well I missed ... :banghead:
The bear is not as far as it appears in the picture...It was the steep uphill shot that got me...I misjudged and shot just underneath her...
A guy has a lot of time to think while the arrow is in flight...You marvel at the nock spinning away with nary a wobble..You know that the release was good..
The next thing you think about is the line running true...Wow looks good!!You start thinking about the tracking job, bloodtrails, and the pack..
Now the arrow is almost there and you start getting excited...Looks to be a perfect shot...This s when you start thinking about hero shots..Then what kind of sausage you are going to have made...Pepperoni??? You bet!!!
The excitement gets to be a fever pitch...You think I have done it,my first bear with trad equipment...You want to call your buddies on the phone...Then,at the last possible second and only inches from the bear, the arrow dramaticly takes a nose dive and the bottom drops off...
You shoot only inches underneath her...Your jaw hits the ground about the same time as the arrow...
Yip, a lot of time to think while a arrow is in flight...

-
Sorry to hear that Santiam...you put some serious effort into this hunt.
Thanks for sharing your photo's everyone
-
You have hunted well, and inspired others. This is a sucessful hunt. Connecting is only a matter of time.
-
I have really enjoyed you taking us along with you on your hunts. Excellent effort, glad you got a shot and am sure we will see you in a hero pic soon.
-
Bet you'll get the next one bud

Very well said about thinkin' when your arra's in flight. I can relate:)

I dont have the pics posted on another site to be able to put up here yet, but I got back from New Brunswick sun evening after a sucessfull bear hunt.
Night one went out about 4:30 and had a bear walking in 30 min later, he paced back and forth around the bait site staying 30-80yd out. I finally got tired and set down after a couple hours of this and he walks in right under me 20yds. The stand I was in had limbs tied to it to help break up your outline and I decided to take the shot sitting since he was right there in the open. Well I picked a spot, drew, and released just fine, but I forgot to look at the bottom limb of my sarrells longbow before the shot. KAPOW!!! Bottom limb hit and the arrow went right between his feet!!
Next evening back out at the same time. Look down under me and bear standing there, he turns around gets downwind and blows out of there!! Dang! In a few min i hear something under me again and he is back and goes back to the same spot and takes off again!! I stand up and he turns around and walks right back in. Head goes behind a tree and start the draw, finish as he comes out, picked a tuft of hair behind his shoulder and let fly hitting just above where I was looking. he lets out a roar and takes off but crashes into deadfall about 60yds out and barely makes it out the other side before fallin for good. I am pumped and my easton axis with 125 magnus stinger is sitting in a tree by the barrel.
Shot was 13yds, bow was a sarrels blackhills 44@28 with camo axis 500 and magnus stingers. Bear was a boar weighing about 275lbs.
Will try and get some pics put up somewhere so I can post.

thanks guys !
Exalty Chris, "chevreuil" is the name we are calling the roe deer for our old cousin from Quebec chevreuil is the whitetail deer isn't it ?
-
Exactly Kibok,
Altough the official name in Quebec for whitetail deer is ''cerf de virginie'' I and most hunters much rather use the historical ''chevreuil''.
Chris,
-
Very cool hunt, Kibok! Nice Roe deer!

Nice hog. Those pigs from the hills shore look different than these swampers down here. They look thicker in the chest even for a sow.RC
-
Yeah Robert....I'd gotten so use to seeing those southern swampers....and when I saw this sow I thought it was a boar. Them Mountain sows are build a little more dozer like.

Congrats Terry  Nice pictures too ;)

Here's the elk my nephews got on the PBS Doug Kerr Memorial Youth Hunt just held in Utah. David Moldenhauer was the first to score with this cow.

Vince was next with this spike. Both mead great hits thus eliminating any need for tracking.

I can't say enough about this hunt. Guy Perkins and the rest of the PBS guys were awesome and rolled out red carpet for 10 kids for a 9 day hunt. Check out the whole story at:

Colorados bow season started at 6am I shot this mule deer at 9am. I had just got back to camp, kicked off my boots and warmed up the coffee. I sat down to write my field notes for the morning and saw this little guy walking through the woods. I put on an other pair of socks and eased up to 25 yards. After the shot he went 30 yards and dropped dead. You got to love a sharp Woodsman and Blackwidow long bows.

hello Guys
some news of the french southern Alps
last sunday hunting opening day for all, a crazy raining day ... this kind of day with everything wet in the tent and everywhere around
but not bad sometimes to make ambush when the drop begin to come more slowly ...
once again a was going for chamois, once again i came back with something else ...
a young russian wild boar, i'ts smelling BBQ !
when the rain will stop !
first use of Abowyer blade for me, just perfect !
-
Great pig, David!
-
Nice sanglier Kibok !
That is some beautiful country you are in. Wherabout in France is that?
Salut,
Chris
-
thank you gentlemens, it's not a great pig exept for BBQ ........ he was the only one survivor of the year with his mother, normaly Sanglier get 3 or four "marcassins" (young one) ...
but this winter was incredible with a lot of snow during almost 5 months ... and more and more wolfs ...
so the temptation to shoot the 50 kgs female was very hight but for next year (if she survive to the every week drive hunt session) it's was better to shoot the young one ... smaller target also ! The young one are quite clear and striped we call them "marcassins", after that theu get red like this one on the picture we call them "bete rousse" and you can begin to shoot them on hunting, after they get black and finaly grey black when they are quite old
it's on open public land where you have to buy a hunting licence to the village hunting society if they get "room" for you ... and one hour driving north from the mediterranean sea and the town of Cannes, south east part of french alps
On this part the mountain are close to 2000 m High, closer to Italy you have some 3000 m in the national parc of Mercantour

I'd say it's about time for some fall whitetails to show up on here! :archer:

David..congrats  on the boar

Yeah, Congrats on that Boar David, and regards from Spain....
We call in Spain those small teenboars "bermejos" that means "reds", due its red color.
Before that we call them "rayones", due its black lines on their bodies.
Beautiful place to hunt...
Ah, good luck with your "rebecos".

thanks to all !

This may well be my smallest deer kill ever, but was one of my most rewarding as my 6-year old daughter Emily was with me in the buddy stand and only about 7-8 feet above ground. It was dead silent last night and I just knew this was not gonna work but I'll be darned if this deer didn't come our way (Emily saw it first) and then pause at 13 yards so I could slip a Woodsman head through lungs and the top of the heart. Emily got to see it all and then led the way on the ample blood trail. Normally I wouldn't shoot such a young buck, but my daughter has really wanted me to get something when I take her and it's just never worked out. The way our antlerless permits read I can legally tag it with those so it doesn't effect my two buck permits. Trust me, Emily didn't care and it was a very cool night I doubt I'll forget.

Took this doe (my first with a longbow) last night (Ohio's deer archery opening day) right about last light and I'll admit I had some judgment lapses. It had been raining off and on all day - not when I shot but it would be again soon. Also, I'm not too big on shooting in the evening - tracking in the dark seems iffy.
Well, I got an opportunity I couldn't pass up and took it. Didn't see the hit. Couldn't find sign or an arrow. Lame. Searched for 2-3 hours in the dark and in the rain (which started again shortly after I took my shot). My bulb on my primary flashlight croaked so I switched to my backup. >:-( Nothing.
Went home for the night and tossed/turned for most of it as rain drummed against our windows. Spent the night praying about it as well. After church this morning, my son and I went out determined to find an arrow or a body or something - no way there was going to be blood. Dylan prayed about it as well and very shortly, found her in some impossibly thick stuff.
Apparently when I dropped the string she turned into me and took a step before impact. My shot was further back than I had planned (entrance liver, exit far side ham) but my 60# @ 29 HH Halfbreed did a great job pushing my Magnus two-blade tipped Carbon Express Heritage 250 most of the way through that crummy angle.
Thankfully we were able to get her dressed, dragged, tagged and deposited at the butcher before people started closing up shop for the day.
Oh - the picture isn't a typical one, but honestly, I wanted her out of the woods and at the butchers ASAP - no time for nice hero shots. In that pic, I'm dragging her (though Dylan did most of that work) with my tomahawk looped through some rope around her forelegs.

For what it's worth - I was still-hunting on public land.
-
My buddy Benny and my moose camp was over run by WOLVES! There was moose sign in the area but it was all really old.
We left camp on three occasions to specifically hunt wolves since they were howling nearby for days. I got to 14 paces on one while still hunting and here is the results!

nice shot, Kibok! I've always admired the roe deeer as a beautiful species no matter what size they are...really neat animals and beautiful terrain as well.
Congratulations.
-
Thats a nice pick Steve. Thats a great wolf , what did he weigh. He almost looks like a German Shephard. I bet he was surprised when that broadhead slipped through him. He probably wasn't used to being prey.
-
what a beautiful animal Steve, it looks a nice size wolf isn´t it??
Congrats on the hunt and pic.

Bravo Steve,

Here are the results of my first trip out West hunting Antelope. I took him on the 20th of September. I was hunting a fence opening into an alfalfa field and the Antelope rut was in full swing. My buck chased another buck at Mach 10 across the field and through the fence opening, he stopped just short of the opening standing broadside at 23 yards. A Gold Tip Traditional 55/75 tipped with a weighted Woodsman did the job out of a RER Little River longbow. Took out both lungs and this bugger still made it 250 yards before piling up!

My buddy Drew took a nice Antelope buck as well and Tim had a fantastic time even eating tag soup... he did have a few good opportunites though :D
-
Steve's wolf pic captures the deep woods and luv2hunt's antelope photo captures the majesty of West. Good stuff.
This picture captures the grit of a down and dirty and fairly miraculous cornfield recovery of a nice buck shot a little back at last light after a successful stalk in that cornfield. I put together a few pics and story labeled as 30mph wind or something like that. Here's where I recovered him, after the coyotes beat me to his back half.

Shot this ol' gal this morning. 53# JD Berry Taipan, CX150 shaft, and a Griz 190 head kept dry and razor sharp in my Arrow Master quiver. She was at five yards facing away so I waited for her to give me the angle and I shot her through the back and out the heart.

Here's a picture of my latest deer from SWMNV resident traditional
bowhunter. The deer was taken on private property in Stafford county. I got
in the stand at about 5:00 pm, at around 5:50 I had 3 does and a spike
coming toward me on a hillside. I had made my mind up that the first deer to
offer a shot I would take. They came from my right and the does spooked some
and moved down the hillside. The spike came in an circled behind my tree.
When he cleared to my left and offered a shot at 25 paces I let fly and made
a perfect quartering away shot and a pass through. He ran 80 yards and crash
rolling down hill another 20 yards. I went and collected my friend who's
property we were on, got the 4 wheeler and picked up my deer. All in all a
good afternoon after work.

Other than getting a little wet I really like the misty rainy hunts. I think the deer move more during these type days. Two mature does with their two fawns came feeding around the back edge of this soybean field. One mama wondered a little to close. The Silvertip placed a perfect arrow. My traditional only tipped with the Magnus Stinger did its job and proceeded to stick in the mud 4 inches deep on the opposite side of her. She ran 50 yards and tumped over in the beans. Thanks to Ron at KME for the super sharp edge.

When I collected my buck Saturday I tried to create a path of less resistance for deer to enter the cornfield by knocking down a trail with pickup through the beat up endrows (nothing left) that have been overtaken completely by foxtail and other grasses. I've noticed the deer aren't real comfortable going in and sometimes they will bound into it with a real high leaping form not unlike a dog in high cover. So I made it easier for them and then returned last night to test the early results.
Posted up just downwind of my trail and while my own visibility is limited, I had at least 3 baldies coming my way (actually all looked like adult does). First one to give me a good shot got center punched through both lungs at about 10 yards; she ran about 55 yards. Pretty cool way to hunt deer. Used my Pronghorn and a Woodsman head.
-
So, Bryce, ya feeding the needy down in Nebrasker again with all them deers?
-
Luck was in my favor tonight. At about 6:30 PM had a nice six- point Whitetail appear 35 yards out at 12:00 o'clock. He walked right into me and turned broadside at 5-6 yards. When he put his head down I picked my spot drew the Dwyer and sent a Magnus 1 two blade into the crease. The deer bolted through some pole Aspen and the arrow was torn out. Immediately I was concerned about depth of penetration. I waited fifteen minutes and snuck out of my stand and walked back to my house. After an hour I went back, found my arrow with good red blood on the shaft and after a 100 yard blood trail found my fine buck. It was a good day! Grilled back strap for dinner tomorrow.

Opening Day success. I saw about 13 deer that morning. This one came out in front of me
moviig from my left to my right through the brush, and at 17 yards I doubled lunged her. She ran off down hill towards a stream, which is where I found her. Good Luck to all this season. Shoot Straight and Good Hunting. (http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn230/SNUFFER8/IMG_0707.jpg)

Yeah, Mark U, I have a waiting list of co-workers who take my extra venison. Some non-hunters (like the little old English teacher down the hall), and others that are bird-hunters or fishermen. This year I have four deer spoken for.
I also have four primary farms I hunt. Fortunately, having grown up in the area I still have landowners who know me and my parents and we still have places to go. About the only way you are going to get on private ground around here (too close to Lincoln/Omaha). Each of these landowners wants us to kill more deer. I personally would be quite happy to go through a fall and get a nice buck or two and leave the does alone. But I also know the political value in being able to show the farmers that I have taken x-number of does (and each of them is like removing 3 deer from the population when you count the two fawns they'd have next year). So...
Took another doe fairly early Sat. afternoon on a different property. The doe was wired so had decided to pass on the shot but then she began scratching her nose with her opposite rear hoof. No way she's gonna jump string doing that!
Ended up hitting low at 20 yards--right on/through the elbow and into the chest cavity just below/behind the heart. This trail was a first for me. Blood trail was at least 1000 yards! That's a THOUSAND, not hundred. Arrow stayed in 300+ yards and most of the blood trail was a 'walker' although I took it slow in case a follow-up presented itself. An hour later and the deer had gone well over a half-mile and possibly 3/4 mile, and I come up on her...I think she'd just bled completely out as there was no damage to the heart.
We're in the middle of a three-day antlerless rifle season too hence the blaze orange.

A lesson here is to stay on the blood even if convinced it is a flesh wound. Obviously I would never quit as long as I had blood, and even after that would do a grid search, but this was quite a trail. I've included a picture of the entry wound so you can see where I hit. Notice the burrs (beggar's lice) all over the deer. That was fun picking those out after the hunt (at least they come off the Sitka stuff fairly easy but there were HUNDREDS).

Its great to see all of your pictures and stories, and congrats to all of your succes
Our deer hunting season starts in nov 27 and runs until last days of January ,
So I am anxiously waiting
So to help with the blues I headed to a friends place which has some rams and hogs,
When I got out of camp in the morning there was no wind so my plan was to go up the mountain and glass, I took about 40 minutes to walk up and was focused just to get on top , When i am about to arrive I feel a steady wind in my face that came from the other side I arrive to the top and
15 yds away and to the bottom of the mountain 6 corsican rams where bedded.
I came back some steps down and lighted my gear
left my fanny pack and my side quiver, and only took my bow.
I sat looking at them where I can see them but barely be seen. I am there enjoying the moment I never imagined these will happen and I am very relaxed and breathing heavily 1st because of the 40 min uphill workout and next because i had a clear chance for a shot, the sun was barely rising and my body felt warm and complete, 10 minutes after i am sitting and waiting, I move my foot and hit a rock making the worst noise ,
I feel as if I ruined the hunt , and I close my eyes to wrap my anger, I see where only 3 of them stand up and one of them comes up toward me to investigate the noise,
I dont move a thing I am just a statue and he walks up to me and stared at me at about 7yds by these time i dont know what to do, he is staring at me but i can not take a front shot and i can not draw either so I wait very nervously , when he decides I am no threat he turns to go back down I draw on him and let it go, my yellow fletching dissapears right on the spot quartering to the front shoulder, he ran down the mountian for 60 yds It was a thrill , and here i share my pics,
thanks

Gerardo, that is a Beauty of a ram, A trophy most of us here would never get a shot at, congrats. Keep em coming and good shootin, Steve

Nailed a fierce ground grizzly today. I was between him and his hole and he was preoccupied (as I learned later) watching a coyote out in the field beyond.

The fletching is positioned like that to hide some of the damage. Ace Hex Head to the head - game over.

Bloodied my new Schafer Silvertip. First time in about ten years since I started hunting this early in the season. I usually wait until November when it turns cooler since I hunt with bow throughout rifle season.

I gotta start remembering to take the camera, just in case.
I left work at 3:00 and was at my hunting location by 3:30, thanks to a nice straight shot road to get there. It was kinda warm (upper 50's) I put my boots on, slipped into the bibs and put on my brown/black plaid shirt, strung the bow, donned the side stalker quiver and binos, grabbed my new thick seat cushion, and off to the woods. Arrived at my natural ground blind and settled in on my new cushion. I sit on a 7 gallon bucket with a swivel seat lid. There was a favorable breeze in my face.
I spent the first 1-1/2 hours watching squirrels and woodpeckers and such. At some point, I got one of those "you should probably look over here" feelings and lifted my binos to scan the tree line at the other end of my honey hole, about 125 yards away. Nothing at first, but then up from the ravine walks a nice doe. I yearling, but a nice, blocky, fat looking yearling. I have a combo tag, so if she comes my way, I'll fling an arrow. She decides to stay under the big osage and feed on a mashed up hedgeapple. If you want to see something funny, watch a squirrel try to carry one of those off.
I decide to have a little fun, so I grunt at her several times with my tru talker. She looks up each time, but never comes my way. Finally, a hedgeapple falls right behind her and sends her running. She comes back several times. She wanders back down the hill, out of sight and I see nothing special for about a half hour, then she comes back with a mature doe in tow. I note that the deer are all looking really big and healthy this year. The big doe is the size of a nice buck. They feed for awhile, then something sends the big doe packing. I raise the binos again and up walks a buck I saw last year that I want out of the herd. He has a tall, narrow 6, possibly 7 point rack, but he's a brute otherwise. I'll definitely take him if he moves in. They are content to feed on the hedgeapples, as is the fat red fox squirrel about 30 yards away from me. The big doe comes back.
They stay under the big osage, so I decide to try grunting again, because I got maybe a half hour of legal shooting light left. At first, the buck could care less. The yearling keeps prancing around playfully, like she's 4 months old again. Not sure what her deal is. I then decide to pinch the call down and go for more of a doe sound; that "calling to my fawns" sound. A couple of those and he's decided he better come on over and see what's going on. He starts walking to me on a string. I know he can't see me yet, and I definitely know he's not smelling me. He gets to about 50 yards upwind of me and both does take off running for some reason. He looks their way, then continues to me. He gets another 10 yards closer. My heart is pounding by now, and I'm feeling the string on my bow. Then one of those does starts making a big rukus in the tree line like they're wrestling back there or something. I can't see what she's doing, but the buck takes note and looks her direction. I softly grunt again and he looks back my way, then back towards her, lowers his head and slinks on off into the tree line. ($#@&%!) I think to myself. Next thing you know, the yearling pops out of the trees, runs in a big circle, then runs back in the trees. All is quiet again, then all 3 come barreling back through like their tails are on fire. I sit there wondering what is got them so spooked, then off in the distance, I hear a 4 wheeler start up, then another, then I hear two teenagers hollering back and forth on the neigboring property as they're loading up, talking about where they're going tomorrow.
To top it all off, I left my new seat cushion in the tractor shed where I park. I hope it's still there today when I go look for it. Oh well... there's always next time! I believe I'll be closer to that osage tree then.

Got my first deer with a longbow. Im shooting a Bear Montana 45lbs. 1916 xx75 arrows, magnus buzz cut in 125gr. Deer was taken in the evening. Had 2 does come in, this one stopped 8yds quartering away. I was 16ft up a tree. I got nervous and didnt "pick a spot". I staired at the chest and ended up hitting a bit further back then I would have liked. Deer went about 150yds. I waited 2hrs and in the first 50yds found stomach matter in the blood. I backed out and waited till 5am to pursue her. The blood was dark/watery at first, then mainly bright red. She bedded down one time, which is where she expired. I dont know who was more excited, me or my family.

I Just want to thank all you guys on here for unknowingly helping me harvest my first "REAL" trophy. It's been 6 FUN years of trials and errors. I've had deer so close I could pat them on the head and yet had countless others waive that little white flag in the air at 500 yards. But in all that time I've just let my first arrow go and I will never forget it.

Ok guys. I am about three weeks new to this forum. I have got the traditional bug pretty bad. This is my second post, and I am very excited to post here.
To start, a very close friend of mine has been doing the trad thing for quite a while. He has killed several bucks over 140 inches with his modern equipment, and said he just wanted a fresh outlook on bowhunting. I sorta blew him off, but he has proved me wrong by killing quite a few deer with his longbow and recurve over the past few yrs. He is currently hunting with a black widow psax, and is just as efficient now as he can be with modern equipment. Off course his yardage is quite a bit less. Well, back in the summer he handed me a chapparall longbow, and a dozen wooden arrows with zwickey broadheads. He told me if I wanted a new outlook on bowhunting, then I needed to start practicing.
I took the bow, and diligently practiced with decent results before the MS season opened. I kept cutting my nose with the string, and it was effecting my shooting. I gave it up, picked up the compound and started hunting. I killed my biggest buck ever with the compound. He was an 8Pt that was just shy of Pope and Young by 1.5 inches. Nonetheless, a step in the right direction. I wanted a challenge so I told him my dilemma with the string cutting my nose. He helped me with my form by canting the bow a little more, and I also changed the brace height on the bow. I started practicing again three days ago. I was drilling out to 20yds so I felt like I might have a chance if I got one in the 20yd range.
I learned a valuable lesson yesterday about trophy hunting. TROPHY is in the eye of the beholder. I usually have a policy that if I am not going to mount a buck, then I don't shoot him. This all changed yesterday when I shot my first deer with the longbow. It was a 1.5 yr old spike. He means as much to me as the 150 inch 8pt that I killed with a gun last year.
I had been watching deer come out on my clover field for two days. I went at 3pm took my huntve, and drove to a pine that I had picked out on the edge of the field. I hung a lock on, parked the cart about 100yds away, and climbed in the stand with longbow for an evening sit.
I had been there 45min when I heard deer moving my way. I had two does come out to about 32yds. I just didn't feel condident with the range so I passed as they fed out toward the center of the field. Directly, I heard another deer coming. I looked up and at first thought it to be a large doe. It was a spike headed straight toward my tree. He walked approximately 10 yds, turned broadside, and started munching on clover. I have not been this nervous since my first deer at about age 14. I drew the bow silently and held it for what seemed like an eternity as I focused on the lungs. I released the arrow, and it was a perfect shot through the lungs exiting the heart. The arrow was protruding equal amounts out both sides of the deer. He turned ran about 50yds, and crashed. The emotion overtook me. My legs locked, and I felt like I was going to be sick. One would have thought that I had shot a true trophy. As I gathered my thoughts, I realized that indeed I had shot a trophy. I also realized that I should keep my lips closed if I am at a camp and someone shoots a buck that by today's trophy standards seems sub par. Quess what. The trophy is relevent to the person that shoots the animal.
In conclusion, I am hooked. I have rekindled the desire to enjoy the sporting practices of hunting again, and realized it is not just all about the bone. Thanks for a great sight, and I am very proud to say that I took a spike buck with traditional archery equipment. I also know that there was lots of luck involved for this to happen the first time out with a longbow. I also found half of the wooden shaft with the broadhead for a keepsake, and reminder of this wonderful day. Thanks for listening.

Season closes today in ND. I went out with a few friends yesterday and made some deer drives. Actual temperature was -36 on the drive to the farm. The high for the day was -15. This does not figure in wind chill. We had fun and got a couple for the freezer.

Went bowhunting this past fall for the first time in 20some years. Saw one nice 8 pointer that bedded down 35 yds behind the tree for over 2 hrs lol, never got a shot. Missed 2 bucks, a nice spike at 10 yds and a fork at 25 yds, knew the distances just aimed wrong is all. Hopefully will get better control of my buck fever, legs started to quiver as soon as I seen them, so that I am calmer for the shot.
