Title: Homemade Traditional Bowhunting Royal Slam
Post by: joebuck on April 23, 2007, 10:02:00 PM
There is one less mentally challenged Goulds gobbler in Mexico left. This poor soul ran into my arrow last Monday 7500' in the Sierra Madres Mts in Mexico. IMO the Goulds is the prettiest turkey there is. I have been blessed with a good hunt with great friends and humble equipment ( calls and bow) God gave me a little talent to make and enjoy in his outdoors.  Joey Buchanan    (http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c114/swamprooter/goulds067.jpg)

I think thats the first time ive really gotten the chance to take a good look at one of those critters.  Im here to tell you that it would make one of the most impressive "hanging dead" mounts ever.  Those wings and back feathers sure would look nice on one of those mounts.  Congrats on a job well done.

Hope to do the same this year.  Just finished a T/D hybrid I designed and made all my calls for the last several years.

Your success makes me look more forward to hitting the woods.  Thanks.

Good Job!!!!

Thanks guys for the kind words. I'll try to answer all the questions. All gear in the picture was all homemade except the modified Super Glove and arrow. My pot calls I make from some Bruce Wurth influence, my longboxes I make from Neil Cost school of longboxes and my bow I made from some Robertson influence. That bow (58#@29) is 9 years old now. That is a Silver flame 150 gr. and I am mounting the bird hanging upside down in a dead mount in front of an old wagon wheel. Also I shot this bird at 14 steps with a pass through shot and he went 19 steps. My shortest recovery to date and my first sucessful kill with a game tracker which held up for the 5 yards and didn't affect accuracy. Shot was high thigh broadside. Birds were henned up on the ground by 6:30am. I started calling with fast cutts mixed with 3-4 yelp series and the hens drug the 2 gobblers in around 7:00am. I use a Call Purrfect jig to make my mouth calls. Bird was 2 year old and spur less!!!, 17#. Shot bird out of one of those "dang" tent blinds through the netting. I was really lucky to get my bird. I had some good friends that are great bowhunters with me on that trip that went birdless. They will get their Goulds I'm sure next time. Thanks Shoeman. Hope everyone has my luck the rest of your season. JoeBuck

It's hard to grow good spurs when you climb mountains all day long...

Once again, that is an incredible accomplishment.  That is a lot of work and dedication taking all those turkeys, not to mention with all handcrafted equiptment.  Amazing

Gene, Just curious, What loser you talkin about? Congrats Joey. I know how hard you worked to accomplish that and I'm glad I could be a part of it! A two year old with no spurs? What's that all about? It probably doesn't really count.
