Title: Wisconsin Bunny Romp - Stories & Pics!
Post by: Whip on January 24, 2009, 07:14:00 PM
I thought we should start a new thread for stories and pictures from the Wisconsin Bunny Romp.  This is the first of what I sure hope will become an annual event.

A great time was had by all, and the cold weather was not a problem in the least.  In fact, maybe it actually helped a little to keep us from overheating.  Busting bunnies out of snowdrifts is hard work!

Although we might were apparently not quite as efficient as the foxes and coyotes, the furry critters did not escape unscathed.  I've got to go work on my pictures.  Be back in a bit......

Many thanks to Paul for providing the club house. Also thanks to the guides: Ohne and Joe. The food was great as well. I sure ate my share. The jalapeno venison sausage was awesome. My son and I enjoyed getting out and chatting with all the other trad guys. Hope to do this again (we did leave some seed for next year).
Thanks to all and nice talking to everyone.

I'm glad you guys had a great time... I think a gathering like this a month or so after deer season is a great way to visit with all your Wisconsin neighbors and break up the cabin fever... Every state should do it!

Paul did a great job organizing this thing and getting it all put together.  And the door prizes were all donations from his business, Badger Arrow.  Many thanks to him for the generousity, and mostly for pulling this all together so that we could all have a good time.

My buddy Ohne Raasch was great in allowing one group to traipse around his land.  I think it was his first time actually carrying a traditional bow with the intent of doing harm to animals.  Hopefully we all showed him how much fun it can be without hurting anything!

The group at my house really got into the rabbits.  Some may call it unfair baiting practices, but hey, I put all that feed out for the birds - not the rabbits!  They just hang around the house to clean up the spilled seed.

Our group started out by sending some standers down below while some of us worked around the buildings to chase bunnies down toward the marsh.  We got some running right away, and the arrows were flying and rabbits running in all directions.  Some made it past the standers, and others doubled back toward the homestead.

Tom Colstad of the Bowyers Journal magazine (soon to be Traditional Archers World) was there with his camera instead of his bow trying to capture the action.

The snow was deep, and those with snowshoes outpaced the rest of us who slogged through the sometimes knee deep drifts.

But jumping creeks with snowshoes can be hazardous to your health!

I'll wait for Jerry to jump in and tell the story, but not all the bunnies got away!  Just before the noon break Jerry made a great shot count.

Awesome!!!

But where's all the briars?
Title: Re: Wisconsin Bunny Romp - Stories & Pics!
Post by: ChuckC on January 24, 2009, 09:01:00 PM
There were some briars but mostly small pines and brush thickets.  Those photos are misleading,  the snow was really deep in spots, especially in the areas I was told to walk.

These bunnies are mean.  At least two of us were charged and very nearly run down by those monstrous beasts.  Why,  they are the meanest bunnies in the land.

I'm glad that everyone had a great time.  Next year?  You bet! Not sure how to make it any better.  At least the weather held and we did not get the wind that was supposed to happen.

We almost lost a hunter this afternoon. I'll tell you, that white rabbit from Monty Python was tame by comparison. How Chris survived the near attack I'll never know.

Paul, Joe and Ohne my son and I would like to thank you for such great hospitality! Dominic did not want to quit chasing the rabbits! I think we created a bunny chasin' monster! He's gonna be like a puppy tonight, chasing rabbits in his sleep!   :jumper:

I gotta admit, he did manage to get a pretty nice buck today....

This was definately the coolest thing I've ever seen anyone bring home from a rabbit hunt. I'm thinking it'd look good hunt over the fireplace as-is.   ;)

We all worked hard, but few harder than these two hunters. Mental note: I need to buy snowshoes...and borrow some of that lab's energy. Nothing reminds you how out of shape you are than trying to keep up with a hunting dog.

So we send the boy in some think pines to chase the rabbits out. I tell him to keep his eyes out for sheds while in there, 5 minutes later he drags this guy out! Much thanks to Ohne for letting him keep the buck that was found on his property! Thanks again buddy!

This was one of best hunting adventures I've been on. Fun in the snow, meeting new friends, and plenty of action. I agree this should be a yearly event.

I was lucky my warning shot from two feet deterred that vicious rabbit. I think if the rest of the guys hadn't come up the hill that  rabbit would've come back to finish the job.

Thanks for everyone who helped put this together. This really was a lot of fun.

What a great way to spend a Saturday - met some new friends, and had some fast shooting at close range. Thanks Whip & Paul & everybody else that helped to bring this together. I sure hope we do this again next year.

BTW ChuckC - those rabbits aren't just mean, they're cruel too. I swear I heard one snickering at us as I passed his hidey-hole   :D

Did you know Wisconsin bunnies eat bratsand cheese and they drink Leinies beer ?  I heard they prefer the darker beers.  Most of em are Packers fans too.

York... are you sure it was snickering you heard and not a big bunny burp ?

I had a great time meeting several more TradGangers at the bunny romp today and enjoyed being outdoors in Wisconsin's Winter Wonderland, even though the temp hovered just above zero. It was fun being a "beagle" for the shooters and taking pix of some of the action. I plan to have a "fun" story + pix about the bunny romp in the upcoming Spring TradArchers' World magazine. I'll be sure to get comments from some of the participants, too. Congrats to Dominic on his fine buck and to Jerry for putting that bully bunny in his place. That will certainly teach him a lesson about trying to intimidate us trad guys. This romp should become an annual event! Tom Colstad

Thanks to Paul, Joe and Ohne.  Just the break from cabin fever we needed.  Good to see old friend and meet new folks.  I must say though that at 5 degrees below zero to start the day, I thought the boys might decide to spend time in the clubhouse instead of the rabbit thickets. Accordingly, I dressed rather light, expecting a morning mostly indoors.  Jeans, no long underwear, and a wool shirt.  Shouldn't have underestimated my Wisconsin (and Illinois) bretheren.  Luckily, I did throw my parka in the truck, just in case (and my snowshoes).  Warm enough after moving around a little.

Amazingly, everyone in the group of 10 or so who hunted Joe's place in the morning got at least one shot at a bunny, usually running and in the brush. The one I killed offered a better opportunity than most.  He sat still for a moment, and my hex head made it through.

We began with morning coffee and rolls at eight at the clubhouse provide by Paul and his fellow club members and we thank you and your club members in getting things organized. Those first meetings often are a little awkward but with common interests those feelings quickly disappear and the hunts provided by Joe and Ohne on their lands created the connection that made everyone feel at ease. The temps barely made the single digits but with little wind, a bright sunny day, great lands to walk and good people to share the experience everything seemed plenty warm to me. We came back in for lunch and were treated to many venison dishes and the sharing of the hunt.  Raffles were held and were much appreciated and then many of us were off for a second round.  We finished with a gathering in Whip's shop to soak it all in with a barley beverage as the sun began to set. Thanks all.

What a great time yesterday!!!! Definetely should be a yearly event!!!

I won't leave my snow shoes haning in the garage next year!!!

Many thanks to Ron of Badger Arrow for setting up the club house, etc. and to Joe and Ohne for letting us tromp all over their places. Ohne's place was just loaded with rabbit sign.  Some of it from the rabbits, some of it what was left of the rabbit after it came out the other end of the coyote.

Squirt, the dog, had a great time and slept the whole ride home. I'm pretty sure for the first hunt at Ohne's he thought he was trying to put up pheasants.  It wasn't until the afternoon at Joe's place that he got to figure out what he was looking for.  That Pope and Young bunny that we kicked out of the downed tree really got him going.  It was perhaps the biggest rabbit I have seen, and probably the ring leader behind all of the viscous bunny charges that we experienced yesterday.  Squirt even jumped in the creek trying to sniff them out.

I'm still wondering if Jason figured out how he was going to field dress that thing after it ate and spit back 3 arrows and stood its ground with a dog 3 feet away. It was kind of scary for a moment, before we realized what we had in front of us.

Can't wait to do it again.

Thanks to all,

Jerry + Squirt

My first post on Trad Gang!

Yes, I will be hunting soon, this weekend in fact. My son, Jacob age 13, had so much fun that he wants to hit the woods this weekend with our recurves. I placed all the blame on you Badger Arrow! After all, you were part of of the reason we had so much fun. Not sure why my wife thought we would be home by noon? Anyway, she isn't mad at me, but she is mad at someone else...Ha Ha!

We did have a blast, the day went by too fast. Thanks to all! Really a bunch of great guys!

I have some photos that I will post when I figure photobucket out. Give me some time.

More coming...

Welcome aboard Jim,  Sure was a good time! Dominic had a blast trying to kick the rabbits up for us! He was so bummed that he couldn't hunt, Hunters-ed this year though, he'll be ready for the next romp! Looking forward to your pics! Let us know how you do this weekend!

When we got home the first thing he did was turn the 3-Stooges on... the second thing was falling into a deep sleep!   :smileystooges:
