What's going on fellas? I thought I'd start a new thread for the new hunt. We need to start throwing dates and location around. If you all want to go on the Kansas Side, Valley falls, I think would be a great place. Also, if everyone wanted to go back to Platte Falls, that would be great too. How about the 32nd of January, or first Saturday of February? What do you guys think? Tripper
-
January 32nd :saywhat: :D
Lots of public land around Valley Falls, I used to hunt up there alot in the 80's. Good wabbit country for sure.
I have two more surgery's this month and the bad one is the 29th so I'm out :( But if I can help I would be glad to.
Dang it man :knothead: :banghead:
Tracy
-
Tracy, Shoot a date out there when you will be able to attend. Tripper
-
I'm in this time for sure.
-
Reporting for duty! I’ll help any way that I can.

I'm in again with one exception...will be in Branson with my boys for our annual trout fishing trip from the 16th thru the 19th. I'll check with Mike (the beagle man) and see what his schedule looks like. Said he had a great time and would do it again...We went out on NY day and Hunter got his first small game kill..twenty yard shot with his youth 20 on a rabbit. He was stoked!
-
Ok, so I just looked at a calendar and noticed that there is not, nor has there ever been 32 days in January. You guys are forgetting that I was raised in Oklahoma and my favorite color is clear. Ok, so I guess that the 32nd of January would theoretically be the 1st of February. How does that day sound to everyone? Excuse me while I go take my med's. LOL! Tripper
-
That's a Sunday and would probably work ok for me but maybe Saturday the 31st might work better for some.
Also, can you find out about non resident licenses? Do you have the one day permits like here?
We gonna do the breakfast again?
Have disc, will travel..... :campfire: :coffee:
-
Dave, the best I could find on the website is that all hunting requires a hunting liscense, which for a non-resident is $72.50. Kind of steep. I will try to call them on Monday and find out all the details and what it takes to hunt in Kansas as a non-resident. I think breakfast will be a great idea. Tripper
-
Depending on work and or family stuff I might could make it. Tracey is right, there is a lot of public land up by Valley Falls and Lake Perry. The bad part is that Kansas can be down right greedy when it comes to out of state hunters and licenses...
(I'm not from Kansas I just live here... :p )
-
Tripper, I looked also and don't see a one day or five day type of license like they do for fishing.
They change the regs every year anyway it's worth looking into.
I'm the weakest link here as far as planning anything, Exspecialy January so I will just plan on seeing everyone if it works out. Crutches don't work to good for bunny hunting ;)
Tracy :archer:
-
Tracey,
We'll just park ya in a comfy chair with a warm blanket and close to the buffet table... :D
-
Lucky me... I bought a lifetime Kansas Hunting license years ago (grew up on the Kansas side) Now all I gotta do is find it.
Guess I'm in for Ks or Mo.
WoodsyDave
-
Boy, that is kinda pricey!!!
Hate to say it but it might make the difference this time of year between going and not going. We'll have to wait and see.
-
Sounds good Paul sure would like to see everybody again. :goldtooth:
Hang in there Dave, Lets see what Tripper finds out over the phone.
Tracy

Went to the website and it appears there is no way around the fee unless you are under 16 (Discounted fee) or dissabled (free).
No mention of ANY type of short term or day pemit.
Did find an excerpt from the site about the rabbit hunting. They make it sound pretty good.
Here it is:
Quote "Although found statewide, cottontail concentrations are greater in the central and eastern portions of Kansas. Kansans don't hunt them heavily, so populations can be very good -- so good, in fact, that nonresidents travel hundreds of miles to Kansas from states where rabbit hunting is a tradition.
Grassy and brushy habitats are rabbit factories, and many cottontails are taken incidentally while hunting upland birds or other game. Ideal cottontail sites include shelterbelts, thickets, and woodlots, especially when located close to crop fields. Abandoned farmsteads with heavy weed growth, dilapidated buildings, and even old farm machinery can be cottontail hideouts.
Due to their natural camouflage and preference for thick cover, cottontails are often hunted with beagles, which move the rabbits in a slow circle through cover, and finally back in front of stationed hunters. "Rabbit roulette" might be an apt name for this technique. However, beagles are not necessary, and "spot and stalk" rabbit hunting can be excellent when snow is on the ground and rabbits can be easily seen.
Excellent hunting opportunities can be found on wooded public hunting areas and Walk-In Hunting Access land. Permission to hunt on private land may be easy to obtain due to lack of competition from other hunters.
Rabbit hunting is one of the best ways to introduce youngsters to Kansas hunting. Most hunters use a .22 caliber rifle although small gauge shotguns are used, as well. Healthy rabbit populations, coupled with liberal hunting seasons and bag limits, make rabbit hunting in the Sunflower state a fine option for small game hunters.
Rabbit season is open year round. The daily bag limit is 10, and the possession limit is 30. Kansas hunters 16 through 64 years old must have a valid Kansas hunting license, unless exempt by law. All nonresidents must have a Kansas hunting license unless hunting on their own land." Unquote
-
The only short term lic. is for waterfowl.
-
I'd be in for Mo. I can't do the Non-res. for Kansas.
If we couldn't do the federal ground again, I say we go up to Elam Bend. WoodsyDave and I were there on new years eve to pull stands, and there were rabbit skins in the parking lot. So there must be some good rabbit hunting up there.
Or, Tom and Chris K. went to Bilby Ranch up by Maryville and said there were a butt-load of bunnies up there. Its a good drive, but we could car pool etc.
-
Maybe the Missouri side would be a better choice for everyone since it is a lot friendlier to small game hunters from out of state...
-
Since Kansas is more strict, or pricey, I think we should go for another MO hunt. I can't remember how much it was for out of state but it wasn't very much. If that would make the trip more accessible to more people, then that's what we should do. All of us Kansas guys can carpool. My truck will seat six. We all could meet at Cabelas or my house and head out from there. Tracy, if you can fit in the papoose thing my son ride's in, I will Cary you all over. I'm sure my rucksack in Iraq was heavier than you are, or at least it felt like it. Tripper
-
We can rig a chair on a couple of 2x4s and take turns carrying him between two of us. :)
He could draw and shoot like a Raja on a tiger hunt in India...
-
Never rode in a papoose before :D I don't think it's going to hold 200lbs :scared: I have been down for 8 months and gained a little weight :knothead:
Paul, I kind of like your idea :archer:
-
OK, just had an idea...
Take a pair of rubber boots and set the ends of your crutches in each of them then fill them up with that spray can expanding foam.
We'll call them "MUCK CRUTCHES"...

Here's what me and couple of buddies have done for the past several years. We go phez huntin down around Dodge City we'll hunt Jan. and Dec 2009 so we get 2 hunts off that 1 permit then we don't buy another permit til 2011.Maybe you guys could do something similar MO one year KS the next.Just thought I'd throw that at ya might make that $72 KS tag easier so justify.
Shoot straight,Steve
-
Yep, if the MO guys were gonna buy KS small game, now's the time to get your money's worth...tag is good for a full twelve months.... :readit: :bigsmyl:
-
I thuoght about that already and I also have a friend who owns about 100 acres over by Valley Falls. He's got a bunch of rabbits on his place or at least he has in the past.
-
Cant do it boys. Already spendingtoo much money for tags for a guy thats been off work for a year.
-
Any dates? Places?
-
I'm game eighter state... Just set the date
Looking forward to seeing youse guys again.
WoodsyDave
-
I'm trying to figure out some way to be fair to both sides. There are pro's and con's to both sides and obviously money for license plays a large part of the attendance.
Since we are not planning on going until the end of January or the first of February, we have time to take a census I think. Post your name and put what side you are willing to travel to. just copy and paste the list each time a name is added. Tripper

im in. both states, three more states, guam. im in. im blood thirsty and the fun meter is runnin way too low. i got stuff to make flu flu's if you want some.
-
I'd be for sure in MO but a maybe at best for KS. Between my daughter and myself, it would be over a hundred bucks. Not impossible, just inconvenient at best.
Even if I don't hunt I'd consider going just to tag along. I could still bring my stove and stuff for breakfast.
-
Put Me in Coach. Either side works for Me.
bretto
-
Tripper, you have a pm.
-
lets have one of each. that way we can meet everyone and no one gets left out. i am going to buy licease for both states anyway.
-
Alright, here's what I've come up with. Saturday, January 31st at Valley Falls WMA. From what I've seen so far, most guys are either or. There is alot of ground up there for us to cover and a nice gravel parking lot for us to gather and have breakfast. rodneybrintle and I will go up there this week sometime and do a little recon.
For everyone who can't pay the non-resident fees.Dave Bulla brought up a good point. I didn't see anything that said you can't come along and stump shoot and just enjoy good company.
I'm going to see if Mike from the Nocking Point wants to join in since this is up there in his neck of the woods.
OK, I have put out a date, What time would you guys like to meet? I know there is a Kasey's right by the WMA we could meet at, or if anyone else has any sugestions. Tripper
-
twosheds..you may want to check with an agent about stump shooting during a season. If there is a season, may be hard to convince an agent your just shooting at stumps. The rules get mighty sticky sometimes..hate to see anyone get a ticket.
-
I should be able to make it in either state.
Bill
-
I am a definite maybe.
Need to replace a tip inlay and I am good to go.
As long as She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed agrees (which she generally does just to get me out of her hair).
Cannot wait to meet you guys.

Tripper, I wasn't planning on taking my bow if I don't buy a license. Standing in the brush with a bow and blunts with a bunch of other guys hunting rabbits while beagles are bawling and claiming I'm NOT hunting would be tough to pull off :readit:
-
Hey va,
I'm sure we'll be able to come up with a "Loaner Bow" if ya don't get your tip fixed... :D
-
VA, I've got several recurves and longbows also if you need one. Ben
-
Alright guys, I called the wildlife dept. and for sure it would be the $72.50 for an out of state license.
I also asked about guys that wanted to just come along and stump shoot, and the CO I spoke with said he would probably treat them as if they were hunting. It would be hard to prove. I'm getting a fire, I'll be back.
-
Ok, never mind. I got canceled.
As it stands now. I'm still planning on the 31st of January, if that's alright with everyone. What time did everyone meet last time? Tripper

The tip shouldn't be too hard to glue on - one more lesson in self-bows... when the limbs are not synchronized the tips suffer.
I may even have a new creation to shoot in during the hunt. Ya never know.
-
Oh yeah - I fergot to ask...
Is this area actually called Perry WA? or is there a Valley falls WA that i cannot find. Wouldn't be the first time.

Put my name in I'll be there. Thanks, Ben

Hey twosheds-
I'd like to listed on the "definate" list for either state. We met at 0700 hours to whip up the fixins and then started from there. Sent you a PM...
-
Chris, just got off the phone with Tripper. He's still working on the details but it sounds like there is a Casey's general store where we can all meet and he's gonna try to get an address so everyone can mapquest it. Not quite set on a time but he'll probably post that soon.
The rest of you guys, would anyone be opposed to donating a small dollar amount for groceries? It's hard to arrange for food by having people just "bring something". Might be easier if one or two people buy and cook all the food then everyone who shows up can just put a few dollars in the kitty to offset the food expenses.
I plan to take my stove and disc again and I'll cook whatever we get but if you noticed on the list, I'm still down as a maybe. My work is goofy with overtime and I normally don't know if I'm working on a weekend or not until the last minute. Christmas was an exception as we're off the week between the holidays so I was able to definitely comit to it.
If I find out at the last minute I can't go, maybe someone who doesn't live too far away could swing by and pick my stove and disc up and you guys could still use it?
Anyway, just some ideas. Tripper is the ramrod on this one so if he wants to do it different, that's his call.

Pitching in for the cost of food and picnic items only seems fair to me.

I have a large two burner camp stove I'll bring, along with whatever food just tell Me how much of what to bring.
Dave, where did You get the large disk You pictured at the last get together?

Put me down as maybe. I might do it because I just remembered that Kansas has an early archery turkey season. If I can figure out a place to go then I'll do it.

I am ok with chipping in a few bucks for food, or I will be happy to bring whatever the gormet chef decides I should... Let me know when it is decided.
I have other stuff that I can bring if needed like: 6' or 8' folding table, stove lantern and more...
Brian, I will be tickled to chase turkeys with you in Kansas too... Also, don't forget the Missouri flock we need to harass before season ends!
WoodsyDave
-
Brian, if turkey's would justify you buying the license, I have some pretty good turkey spots and we could always go out to western KS and hunt my father-in-laws place. I plan on making several trips out there and do some videotaping anyway. There are a lot of turkeys on his place. My wife shot at five big toms in one evening before she hit pay dirt the next day.
Guys, I'm flipping through the list of Kasey's that Gatekeeper posted (thank you Tom) and figuring out which one it is. I will try to figure it out and get a map and directions posted tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for being patient everyone. Tripper
-
I'd be happy to chip in. Thanks, Ben

Sounds good Tripper. I'll chip in. Dave P. we'll do it

If your meeting at the one in Oskaloosa I can get the addy for you, my sister works their.

I’m a little confused…pause insert smarta$$ comments here ( ) pause…. :bigsmyl: Okay I have looked on the KDWP web site and I do not see nor can I find, when doing a search on the Internet, a Valley Falls WMA. The only publicly funded land closest to Valley Falls that I can find is the Perry W.A. Is there an area that is actually called Valley Falls WMA or is there only an area that is referred to locally as Valley Falls WMA? Do any of you have a link to a map for the Valley Falls WMA hunting area? If so please post it.
Anyway… it looks to me like the Casey’s in Ozawkie is the closet to Valley Falls and it is 9.2 miles away according to the locating web site.
-
Tom, I was looking at the Kansas Atlas. It has most of the public land areas in it. I'mputting my money on Perry WMA. I think Valley Falls is a kansas redneck term for that area. :saywhat: They call it that because thats probably the biggest town that touches the area.
-
Brian,
:biglaugh: I was thinking that also. :biglaugh:
-
"Biggest town..."? Heck, it's the ONLY town.
Such as it is... :)
It's up at the north end of Perry.
-
Ya its Perry wildlife area. Valley is at the far North end.
-
I am going to try as well. . . either side. Its on my schedule. I will have to see how I recover from a med. treatment. . . otherwise, even helping cook would be fun.
Dan
-
The wife and I are driving out to Colorado to pick up a horse on the last weekend of January so I'm unfortunately out of luck for this hunt unless the weather gets bad and we can't go.
For all you predator hunters out there.....
I saw an awesome looking bobcat running across the road north of Weston. He was cruising across this open field so I slowed down as it crossed ahead of me. When he got to the other side of the road he stopped and looked back at me. He was only 40 yards from me as I creeped by in the truck. It was acting like a rutting buck crossing fields in the daylight to cover ground. Go figure.
Chris
-
I learned long ago that if you are driving through a wooded area and see a bobcat cross in front of your vehicle stop immediately. Get out of your car/truck and walk up to the spot where the cat crossed and look for him. 90% of the time they are sitting within 20 yards of the road watching for you to pass by. It may take five minutes of looking but he/she will start to sneak off and you will spot them.
I am going to try to be there this time, God willing and the crick don't rise.
Dennis
-
I've tried to look up what the actual name of the area is and I can't find it. I've always called it Valley Falls and have heard it referenced the same. I'm going to try and drive up there tomorrow to find out what that gas station is called. Apparently it's not a Kasey's anymore. I'll let ya know. Tripper

A horse?! :smileystooges: Don’t we have some of those here in Missouri?…. a horse “sigh” well be careful and don’t fall off.
How long do you suppose it will take you to ride him back to your house? :saywhat: Can’t they put him in one pound packages and send him to you? You are buying bulk dog food right? :bigsmyl:

Yeah Brian and I already figured out that it was you and your cousins that named the place.
:biglaugh:
-
Hey Kansas natives....
Now I've got a question. What all can a guy hunt if you just have a "hunting license"?
Brian was talking about hunting turkey in Kansas, is that on the basic hunting license?
If it's good for everything but deer, that would justify more of the expense. If it's good for turkey, how many and which seasons?
Thanks
-
Not sure on that Dave. The wildlife dept. in this state is pretty confusing with it's regs... you are required to buy turkey tags so I'd guess that with the license and tags you could hunt them...
Oh, I'll be willing to kick in for the food fund too. Are you making those stuffed jalapenos like you made at Mojam...?
-
You have to buy the lic. to buy the turkey tag Dave. On the upside the tags are the best bargain in the state. The first one is 30 or 32. The second is 20. Can wackem both the same day too.
The station in Valley isnt a Caseys. Not sure what it is now.
-
See if this helps.
The gas station in Valley Falls appears to be named Petro and Pantry. Here is a map link, address and phone number for this place.

I got a kitchen pass! Game on!
I am now a definite. I'll bring some $$$ cause even I rarely like my cooking.
Gatekeeper - you are awful thorough. Now that I have a map to the Petrol&Pantry I have no more excuses.
What time do we plan on kickin' this romp into action?
-
Gatekeeper,Some horses should come in one pound packages! I've had some that would have been better to eat than ride! Do you want to meet somewhere and go up to the hunt together? Let me know and we'll figure out where would be best. Ben

Are you asking me out? How many times do I have to tell you I’m a happily married man!
Okaaay… but you live way the hell over near….what’s that town called… Paola? And I live up here in God’s country. I’m not sure where the best place to meet is. Here are two options. These times and distances are from your house.
Gas station near my house is 1 hour 17 minutes or 77 miles
Leavenworth 1 hour 18 minutes or 68 miles
I figure Leavenworth might peak your interest because you could kill to birds with one stone. Go hunting and visit some friends at the Pen, but its up to you. Do either of these options make you gitty? Let me know if you can think of a better place to meet. My plan was to go thru Leavenworth, Easton, Winchester and over to Valley Falls. Since I am headed across 192 I could see if Mike wants a ride.
Is Kevin going to join us? Do you think Bob Snow would like to have a day out with the guys?
Let me know I will gladly share a ride with you.

Paul, HA! No jalapenos from hell this time around. I can still see Sal with his nose running and eyes watering.....saying something like "that aint right" or "that aint funny" or sumthin..
I thought they were pretty tasty if you didn't mind blisters on your lips. :scared:
I'm also thinking, (scary thought there!) that instead of messing around with home cooked potatos, I could just use a bag of tater tots. We use them at home sometimes for the kids but the other day I used some in my breakfast burritos and they worked great. Just got them nice and crispy and then busted them up a little and added the eggs, cheese and pico.....MMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!
Oh yea, this time, I promise, no flavored coffee. :banghead:
-
Well shoot Dave, I liked them peppers... ;) I'd forgotten about Sal's reaction tho... :D
An idea on taters are those fresh ones in a bag. Simply Potatos I think they are called? When we do a crew breakfast here at the boiler plant we started using them. They also come in a "spicy" southwest style...
Just an idea, Dillons sells them around here if you want me to pick some up.
-
Alright guys, I drove up there and did a little recon. It looks good. I saw two bunnies in about two hundred yards of walking.
The gas station I keep referring too isn't a Kasey's. It is a 'Liberty'. The address to the gas station is 1420 K-4 hwy. Valley Falls, Ks.
The area is called Perry Wildlife management area. So you guys are right. I guess Valley Falls WMA was just a nickname.
The directions from the gas station are.
Turn out of the station and go left on K-4 .3 miles and turn left onto 16 west. Go 1.4 miles and turn right on Finney rd. right at this intersection is the Perry WMA sign. You will go over a bridge and the main road will veer to the left. Instead of going left, there is a dirt road that keeps going straight. From 16, the parking lot is .8 miles on Finney rd.
I hope this helps everyone.
What do you say 07:00 on the 31st of January meet at the Liberty gas station. From there we will go to the parking lot and have all the fixens. Tripper
-
I've got another question for you guys with tags. In this place, there is a huge amount of deer sign. All of the woods are long strips perfect for drives. would anybody be interested within the next couple of days, going up there and doing some deer drives.
Not trying to get off the subject but I think there would be a good chance of arrowing one in there. Tripper
-
Is that area in unit 19 Tripper?
Dave Bullah, in Kansas a hunting license allows You to hunt small game: Rabbit, Squirrel. Waterfowl, Upland Game: Pheasant,Quail,Woodcock, Doves and Predators: Coyote, and Fox. Not including Bobcat which non-residents must purchase a tag costing $120.00 apiece prior to hunting for them!!!
Beaver,Raccoon and Possum require a Fur Harvesters license.
Turkey and Deer are considered Big game in Kansas and unlike most states where Your Deer or Turkey tag is also Your non-resident license Kansas requires all non-residents to also purchase a $72.50 hunting license.
Sorry I don't make the laws. If it's any consolation residents have to buy a license also but for half price.
-
Perry isn't in unit 19...it's in unit 10.
"Game over man..." :( For deer that is.
Thanks for the sitrep on location and rabbits. Sounds like a plan...
-
Thanks Paul, I didn't think it was in unit 19.
-
Gatekeeper, Just looked at a map, I thought it was farther north than it is,but if you could pick me up at my house it would save me from driving. Not asking you out, once was enough for me!Kevin says he'll never go anyplace with me again!I'll talk with Bob and see if he would like to go, he's never been anywhere with me so he might. By the way, about your wife says you may be happy but....LOL. Ben
-
Sorry guys, I didn't realize it wasn't in unit 19. Tripper
-
Ben I knew if I banged on your cage hard enough I could get you going. Now I’ll start working on someone else.
Kevin get yourself signed up or we’re going to make stories up about you while were hunting. If Bob Snow shows up, between Ben, Bob and me we will spin some very convincing tales. :saywhat:
Brett I get to be in front of you at the chow line. I’m not trying to imply anything…I’m just saying…well… I want to be ahead of you. Okay buddy? :goldtooth:
-
No problem Tom, I didn't really want You behind Me anyhow!! Ben told Me about You.
Kevin, You know You can't miss out on this.

How's the Lad doing so far this year Kevin. I really wanted to come watch at the Tongi tournament but I had to work half the day then move some new furniture for the Mrs.

Any negative story Ben told you about me I guarantee he was putting my name in place of his just to see how you would react. That way he doesn’t paint himself into a corner. You have to watch him he’s sneaky. Now all the good stories he told you about me, I know those are true.
-
Bretto, thanks for the info on the huntin' regs.
The disc you asked about actually came from a friend of mine who lives in Valley Falls. It is an actual farm disc with the hole welded shut. Mine is only modified in that it has handles welded onto it. Chris's has a lip all the way around to make it deeper. Either way works but the lip is a little more "tippage" friendly. My wifes family is from Mexico and Arizona and that is where I first saw them. They work GREAT for frying chicken wings or fish and stuff like that.
If you know any farmers or have a farm store near you, I'd check with them and keep an eye out for used ones that are being replaced. You can probably get them for free. Mine was. They come in quite a few different sizes but around 2 ft give or take a couple inches seems to be a nice size.
-
Man we got 17 guys going including the maybees. I'm thinking we might have to see if Chris and Mike have access to more hounds. Either that or them bunnies are gonna surely be surounded
-
I just got told that I'll be covering another guys shifts for the next two weeks which means working the two weekends before the hunt... :(
I still should be off the 31st but you might want to drop me down to the "maybe" list...
-
Thanks Dave, I don't think I'll have a problem finding one.
Sure hope You can join us Paul, the more the merrier.
-
Put me on the definatly list. I'll go in on food as well. Gatekeeper if you want to car pool thats fine by me. Or anyone else. I up graded trucks, I can seat 5 now.
-
Actually Valley Falls was once named Grasshopper Falls. It started life as a hideout for BORDER RAIDERS (JAYHAWKERS)during the Civil War. Wish I could make it, Valley is only 9 miles from my house but I told my boys that after deer season ended they could pick what we hunted for the rest of the season and they picked turkeys so I will most likely be hunting turkeys not far from you all.

Fatman, I wish you were going. Love to shoot that Orion. Hows the ticker?
-
They just took his ticker out. Said He could have it back after deer season. That way He wouldn't feel bad when Bambi stumbled by.
I might have one for You to try out by then Brian.
-
Bill, these rabbits are definitely going to be in a world of hurt.
31st of January fellas, feed the dogs, kiss the wife, call in to work, whatever you have to cause we're going to have a blast. We could get off a hell of a volley with this many archers.
Dave and I are going to take care of the food. I see that everyone doesn't mind throwing money into the kitty for breakfast. If you don't have the cash, just let me know.
I think all there is to do is just sit back and count the days. If I'm missing something that needs to be done, PLEASE let me know!!!!

Tripper,
I sent you a basic shopping list duplicating pretty much what we had last time.

FYI. For you Predator Camo wearers, Cabelas has two of the fleece w/windstop jackets on the clearance rack. One XXL which fits like an XL and a Large left. XXL 75.00 and the large 68.00.
There were three :saywhat: Just had to do it.
These were not in the cave, but by the camo clothes area. Also some cabelas wooltimate w/windstopper for 104.00

Hey Tripper!
I have a couple more names for you to add to the list. I talked with Ben Saye this morning and he said that Bob Snow will be joining us and I talked with Mike Horton and he said Mike Dunaway will be joining us also.
What amount are you looking for on the food and picnic item collection jar? $5 each? Do you need any help with anything? Let me know if you do, I'll be glad to help out.

Tom, five bucks should be more than plenty. When it comes closer to time, I will go out and buy all the perishables and then have a better estimate. If it is over five bucks a man, I'll take care of it. I butchered a hog last year so the bacon isn't going to cost anything.
If it is less than five bucks, what do you guys say we elect some sort of a treasurer and use the money left over for future shoots. That money could go to buying everyone food at a 3-D shoot or breakfast next time we all gather or even better, you never know when one of your fellow KCTN'ers is down on his luck. Just an idea.
That makes seventeen definates and two maybes.
Although, Dave is pretty much a definate.
Can't wait. I've been in my basement shooting at small targets so I don't come up there and make a fool of myself.
Hope everyone stays warm this week. Tripper

If I get up there I won't be early enough for breakfast. I've got six newly fletched flu-flu's waiting to go.
Dennis

I've been shooting in the basement too but at a big bag... :D
(One of our freezers is kinda close.)

This really sucks that I can't make it guys. I have major hip surgery the 29th and there's no way I can do it. There are so many of you that I would like to meet and see, New and old faces  Maybe the next one.

Hang in there Tracy. You'll be fixed up and ready for next year before You know it.
As soon as it warms up I'll see if We can get those skins for Your bow.

Hey Tracy, will you still be in the hospital on the day of the hunt? How far is it from Valley falls?
Can ya'll say ROAD TRIP!!!!
Lets see, close to twenty guys in camo and brush pants storm the hospital.... Heck, we might make the evening news!
-
Just checked my email, got a notice from my sons cub scout den leader that his pine wood derby meet is on Saturday jan 31st at 9am..... Looks like I might not make it after all dang it. Don't see any way around it and he's really excited about doing this.
-
Hey Dave,
Well that's a bummer that you can't make it but family comes first...
There will be another chance I'm sure...
-
The surgery is at KU Med in K.C. Dave.
Paul's right, family first :notworthy: :)
Tracy
-
Hey Tracy,
Is this the last of the surgery for you? Sure hope so...
We'll have some more chances to get together I'm thinking. Rick Sadler is still working on that archery club and has scheduled a meeting on the 24th at The Prarie Center so maybe you can stop by. Check his thread about it.
Keep us posted...
Paul

I saw that Paul and if nothing's going on I will try to make it for sure.
I hope this is the last of the surgery's, It's been almost a year and I am truly very sick of this stuff. :banghead: But I'm hanging in there.

I read that post too bretto, sounds like those eastern bunnies are tough.
I'll have to set my watch to Gatekeeper time...
:)
-
Thanks Tom I knew I could count on You. To bad Dave wont be able to make it but spending the day with Your kids is more important. We can always get together again.
I'll be bringing My big camp stove and a large skillet, and utensils. Any other props You Guy's can think of list 'em here and I'll see what I can find.
-
Hey guys, I don't know which one of you lives closest to me (Green Hills rd and Barry rd are the closest major intersection or Green Hills and 152)) but if someone wants to swing by and pick up my stove and disc, you're all welcome to use it. The propane bottle has plenty of gas and the disc is clean and seasoned up ready to go.
I don't know how long it will take to do the pine wood derby but if it starts at 9:00am, I can't imagine it will still be going past noon or 1:00. I might still be able to make it out for an end of the day visit. I gotta stop by my buddies place out there at Valley falls and pick up a load of firewood so I could maybe kill two birds with one stone.
-
Oh, by the way, I believe I've got a couple trojans or some sort of virus in my computer so it might not be the best way to get ahold of me. I expect it to die or lock up any day now. :banghead:
FYI, I'm in the phone book and on the KC trad network list.

Dave, I can come pick it up.
I don't know how far you are from K.C. but a road trip is always good. I'll call you tonight.
Sorry guys, I did a couple days at the Firestation so I was kind of out of the loop.
We have the stoves taken care of.
I'm bringing the food.
We have a time and place to meet.
I still don't know about beagles.
Let me know if you guys think of anything else.
Tripper
-
Bretto is bringing his stove and skillet
I'm setting up a time when I can pickup Dave's stove and disc.
That aught to be enough stoves.
I'm picking up the food closer to time
Is there any requests. I'm bringing a bunch of bacon. I figure bacon, potatoes, eggs, tortillas or bread for toast. If anybody has any wild game they would like to throw in such as sausage that would be great.
I figure we should have enough tailgates there to serve as tables for the stoves and serving tables.
-
How about coffee? Last time, brewing the coffee there was a bit of a flop. We were lucky several guys stopped and filled their thermoses on the way there and shared it all around. That's probably the best way to go.
Oh yea, I've got a square griddle that goes with the stove too. Works great for heating up the tortillas.
If any of you are gonna be there much before 7:00am, ya might want to take a lantern. It's hard to cook when you can't see what you're doing. It was pretty darned dark for the first 30 to 40 minutes when we had the hunt at Platte Falls but it was pouring rain and overcast so that didn't help.
-
I'll bring my thermos...
-
My plans got changed guys. I am headed to Stillwater for a meeting that day.
Dennis
-
Too bad you can't make it Dennis. I grew up about thirty minutes north of Stillwater. I spent alot of my teenage years there stomping around.
I'll also bring a thermos of coffee. Anybody else who has a thermos and doesnt' mind bringing it along, that would be great.
-
Bringing coffee.
-
Alright guys, here is the latest and greatest list. Once again, if anybody is left off, just shoot me a pm.
I talked to Tom Porter today and he is going to meet up with Dave to pick up his stove and wok.
Would anybody like to pick up utensils, such as plastic knives, forks, spoons, paper plates and paper towels? It would be a big help. I have a truckload of babywipes so we can clean up after eating.
Also, Rodney Brintle and I are riding up there together, if anybody else needs a ride just let me know.

Nope, no water or electric last time I hunted up there...
I'll bring a small stove and a pot and some coffee and brew it up the Manly way... :)

Yep, Paul is right, no electric up there.
Hopefully the Liberty gas station has a water spicket.

I'll fill up one of my 7 gallon camp jugs and bring it along.

Last time I bought one of the rectangular water jugs with a spigot from walmart that had about 2 or 3 gallons and it did us fine but we didn't brew but two smallish pots of coffee. We had enough left to provide drinks at the noon break.

Maybe my coffee will be better Dave... :coffee:

Guys- looks like I am in. After reading through this whole post. . . can we verify once again exact place and time. I am only 20 minutes from Perry, but I am not sure what you all decided on.
If Tracy (Kstrapper) is up to it, I may load him and bring him along!
Thanks. . .

Looksd like my son and I will be able to make it if nothing goes wrong. Please post the directions again.Sounds like fun and get to meet other trad. shooters. Thanks Mike

I'm thinking somewhere in this is the meeting spot...
It's the Liberty gas station up at Valley Falls. Valley Falls is pretty much up 59 from Lawrence then west on 16. It ain't that big of town so we should be easy to find... :)

One more question: What are you guys shooting at rabbits? Broadheads , hex heads, etc. ??? Also flu flus or regular fletch?
Thanks
-
Also- you guys want me to bring any breakfast venison steaks? Just got another doe here in unit 19. . . may take it to Salvation Army. Will we eat it??
-
Judo's and blunt's Dan. The deer season's closed up there and I wouldn't cary any broadheads in your quiver. The game wardens might not like it :readit: :)
Dang, It looks like you guys might have some snow on the ground also. That should make for a great hunt and pictures.
Tracy
-
Bring the steaks Dan and I'll bring a frying pan and some seasonings... :)
Congratulations on the deer too BTW...
-
I hear you Tracy- that always strikes me as odd though, there are still turkeys, coyotes, bobcats, and besides those seasons, carrying broadheads sure is not illegal. Hunting rabbits on my own I always use them. But, I sure did not want to injure someone or a dog! I'll heed your warning. . .
-
Okay. . . steaks on the way. Going for another one or two tonight! Firefly longbow is longing to be ridden!! The one I took last night was the sweetest 30+ yd shot I ever had. Once I get pics I will tell the story.
-
Do we still have a go on the beagles with Mike and Chris??? Haven't seen Chris post lately(KsKickapoo)

This is what we will be eating. . . She is hangin out in the barn as I write. Ahhh, fresh venison for tradgangers.

Thanks. . weigh her tomorrow. I am betting close to 140 field dressed. This is one of those unit 19 deer. I took another the last day of the regular season- Dec 31st in a regular unit. Been fun taking down a few mature does where there are a boat load. Honestly though, I think KS has WAY over-harvested in many areas.
I'll let her hang a few days in this cold weather then butcher her wed or thurs. FRESH steaks for bkfst and lunch for KS tradgang! Oh yea. . .
-
Nice job on the doe Dan...
Can't beat a fat doe for good eating. And I agree with what you said about the over harvest in some areas.
Looking forward to seeing you Saturday.
-
Great looking doe Dan, Hope You get to fill the rest of Your tags also.
Looks like a little snow moving in today!! The way the weather people are talking might get a couple of inches. Maybe We'll luck out and some will stick around for the weekend.

Cool! Wish I was gonna be there, I'd fire up the disc and do some chicken fried deer steak that would make ya'll slap your Mamma!

Congrats Dan  Looks like you guys will be eating good for sure.

Well with the string of luck we've been having calling coyotes, I think I'm gonna stay on my side of the border and do that saturday. See if I can't keep it going. It took a little pondering, but thats what I'm gonna do.
Guess I'll have to wait for the next bunny shoot. You all shootem up and have fun. I'll see if I can help out the rabbits over here.

If you are gonna be out for the evening too, I might be able to hook up with ya'll. Not sure though as it looks like there is gonna be weekend work this week and if nobody signs for it, I'll be forced in to work it either 3rd shift Friday night or day shift Saturday morning.
Might miss Emmets pinewood derby AND the bunny hunt AND the coyote hunt.....)*&%)&^)&*!!
-
So far it will be an all dayer.
-
I can’t stay online because I’m at work, but I thought I’d better tell you I will be there. Mike Cashion will also probably be there (I don’t know his trad gang handle). There may be other TG ‘lurkers’ who don’t talk much on here, but who read the threads a lot and will show up. Sounds like there will be enough food, but if we need more of anything, be sure and let us all know.
I would suggest that anyone who has flu-flus should bring them. Lunch time could turn into a combination aerial shoot and lie exchange (bull session). I’m looking forward to everything except the being there at 7 a.m. part.
And I will have a few broadheads along. It’s the last day of turkey season, and I’m usually not good enough to take head shots with blunts.

Just checkin in. I picked up all the food today and looks like were going to have a good breakfast. I haven't looked at the weather for Saturday, but I'm sure we can make the best of it no matter what it's like. Looks like we have two days and a wake up. Looks like I won't be able to hunt anything on Saturday...
Scheduled to work a double. Friday seconds and stay over for Saturday thirds. Won't get home till about 8:00am and Emmett's pinewood derby is at 9:00am. Gonna have to stop for some coffee on the way home. Probably again on the way to the derby, and maybe have the wife drive home... I'll be draggin' a$$ by the time it's over.
That's my big pet peeve with my current job. The inability to plan for weekend activities. Buty at least I still have a job. Of course, that is VERY likely gonna change between about April and July.

I just responded to Gatekeeper's PM after waiting to hear from Mike the beagle man and unfortunately he is not available tomorrow. I also had a friend pencil me in to return a favor (laying down hardwood floor) over this weekend so I'm not going to be able to make it this weekend either. I apologize for the last minute notice but I hope you guys have a good time regardless.
Chris
-
Tracy, did they cut on You yesterday?
-
Yep they did, It went real well and they were able to fix everything in the hip. I will be off of work 4 weeks.
Alot better than the shoulder surgery last June and I feel pretty good :D Doc said four months and I can start traning for the fall hunting season. :jumper: :jumper:
Tracy
-
Chris, sorry to hear you won't be there. Maybe next time. I'm sure we can manage without the beagles.
Tomorrow is the day fella's. I have the food all packed up and ready to go. I'm going to be at the Liberty gas station at about 06:30.
Hope everybody coming from afar has a safe drive in the morning. It's gonna be fun.
See ya in the morning, Tripper

Glad everything went good Tracy!!! See You all in the Morning.

I'll be fighting a water heater in the morning :( have fun.

Hey Tracy,
Good to hear that all went well. You get all mended up, that's an "order"...
Setting the alarm, it'll be nice to sleep in compared to getting up for work. Got the coffee, pots, stove and frying pans in the truck. I'll also be bringing a target bag for warm up shots.
See ya in the AM...
-
tic toc tic toc tic toc.........
Well, I ain't there. I worked a forced double last night (2nd and 3rd's) got home and went to Emmett's pine wood derby race and just got home a few minutes ago at about 11:40. Been up since about 9:30 yesterday morning and can't decide if I should try to lay down and sleep or jump in the truck and drive towards Valley Falls. Don't feel too bad right now but usually on past 24 to 26 hour blocks with no sleep it hits REAL sudden.
Might need a flashing yellow light for the truck 'cause I'd probably be cleaning out a couple ditches during the drive over thataway...
Smart money is to take a nap and try getting up while it's still daylight.
You guys post back and let me know how you made out.
Too bad you won't have the beagles but it may be a blessing in disguise. The beagles pretty much guarantee you will see bunnys but on the run. Hunting without dogs might allow you to jump a bunny and have it run a little ways then stop and offer a shot. Or maybe even spot one before it runs.
-
-
:campfire: I bet the gang will hunt all day. Stories and pics will be streaming in after dark. It's 64 degrees right now in Blue Springs..may be too nice for bunny hunting..hope not..bhfp
-
Yeah I bet your right, wish I could have gone.
-
Were back.
The morining started out great. We all met and did a little bs'ing in the parking lot until about 7:30.
Then we moved to the parking lot and had one hell of a breakfast. I'm not sure what he put on those deer steaks, but that was the best tasting deer meat I've ever eaten.
We all finally decided it was time to get the ball rolling and headed for the gate.
A little over a hundred yards into the hunt, Tom stomped a rabbit out of a brush pile for me and I missed a forty yard running shot.
A little later, Mike Horton and I were standing in a hedge row talking and I had a rabbit attack me. He came up from behind me showed his fangs, and made a hasty exit. I missed him at about ten feet. The wind was blowing hard and caused me to shoot high. HEHE!
I think that was the only two rabbits I saw. There were several other sightings, but no shots. At least, none that anybody owned up to.
We hunted for several hours and made our way back to the truck. there, Mike Horton mentioned he knew where a rabbit haven was and that we all had to be blindfolded in order to go to this place. I don't know where we went, but I think Mike was taking us to a dud place so we wouldn't find his real honey hole.
I think the official head count was seventeen. I met a bunch of great guys and had a great time. I think I have the best hunting pals in the whole country. Tripper

Yup. . . it was a GREAT day.. Few sightings of rabbits and I am not sure anyone cared! Great food, frienship, talking bows-hunting, and life. New friends, dreaming of hunts in the future. Doesn't get much better.
Thanks to all who made it and the many I met for the first time. Clearly a class act. . . thanks for a great memory.
Any other tradgangers around the country that can do this in your areas. . . it is beyond worth it!

Well said Dan,
Yep, good food, good fellowship and a good time. Vince, aka, va and I headed north after the others headed for the "secret spot" and we had a good walk along the levee that skirts the river up there. No rabbits or even any sign up there either.
Had a good time shooting arrows at a pop bottle walking back.
Thanks to Tripper for getting this set up. Sure was good to see the familiar faces and meet new folks. Not sure if this event would have been one for the Outdoor Channel or the Food Channel on tv but we sure had fun...

my son and i had a great time as well. i stopped on the way home and picked up a dead deer after having those great steaks. i think i cooked them wrong because they tasted like tires and motor oil. we told great stories and met some of the finest folks around. sure glad trip got us to go. hope to see you all again. i will post the dates of the 3-d shoots at powder creek. talked to the gal on the way home and the board loved the idea and will have a final vote in a week or two. good times.
-
i also called kansas fish and game on the way home and due to trip's near death experience with that rabbit, the big five is now the big six. something had to be done. the bad news is, it now costs $32,000 to hunt rabbits.

"the bad news is, it now costs $32,000 to hunt rabbits."
Yea Rodney, but only for non residents in Kansas. Everywhere else you can drop the three zeros off the price.
So, where're the pictures?
-
Dave, I know Tom took some pics. Ben also had his camera along. I'm sure they will follow soon. Tripper

I wanted to offer one clarification regarding Tripper's "40 yard running shot." I had a ring-side seat to view the miss. It was a 40 yard running shot, but the rabbit was only at 30 yards.
I second the compliment on the great food, especially the deer steaks --- awesome!
It was great to spend time with such a fun-loving group of bowhunters. Next time we'll have to add some rabbits to the mix.

Now that's funny right there!! I am getting ready for the hog hunt or I would have been right there with you guys.
Also, be careful when Horton breaks out the blindfold :scared:
-
I too had a great time! Sorry no pictures until tomorrow because of home dialup…it’s way to slow.
Thanks Tripper for putting this together.

We had a great time even though no blood was spilled but, alot of cans met there demise with so well placed arrows! Our three cooks made an excellent breakfast Tom Porter,Brett Eisman and Paul Nissen. (http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/bens5218/IMG_0387.jpg)Tom cooked ham and eggs on this midwest farm disc (http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/bens5218/IMG_0388.jpg) Brett attacked the hash browns with green peppers and onions (http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/bens5218/IMG_0389.jpg) and Paul cooked the most delicous deer steaks I've ever had! (http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/bens5218/IMG_0390.jpg) While the cooking was going on the junior members loosened up thier bows! I agree with Tom, Tripper did an excellent job organizing, arrainging for food and picked a very good looking area to hunt, unfortunately the rabbit population was down. (http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/bens5218/IMG_0394.jpg) Our trusty scout Bob Snow on the highest vantage point ( standing on a fence post) trying to spot game. There was some tall, tough cover in places!

Great time guys. I really enjoyed it. The deer steaks, breakfast burritos, and especially Tripper's stories were worth the trip alone. It was great hanging out with everyone and meeting some more Trad Gangers.
Paul, Vince, Roger, and Mike...I really enjoyed seeing the bows you made. Awesome workmanship guys.
Ending the day with a trip up to Mike's shop, The Nocking Point, was icing on the cake. Thanks Mike, you'll be hearing from me in the future.
Can't wait to do it again. Thanks again Tripper for setting this up!

This was a great time, I predict another big rendevous in the future....
Tripper's "True Life" stories of life as a fireman had me bustin' a gut. Great to see Mike H. out of the shop with a bow in his hands...did anyone swipe those pictures from his shop so we can post on the internet? I'm talking blackmail material..... :readit:
Vince gets the prize for farthest distance; hope this is the first of many meetings :wavey:
great get together, can't wait 'til next time

Wow what a great day!! Met several new Tradgangers got to see several I all ready knew pretty well. I went to school with Mike Bray and hadn't seen Him for 20 plus years. I think Everyone had a good time. Didn't kill any rabbits but we killed the best part of the day doing what We enjoy and You can't beat that with a stick!!
One of the best times of the day was cooking next to Paul. His stories kept Me entertained all morning, Thanks
Hats off to Tripper for all the effort to put this together. Thanks again Everyone for coming and hope to see everyone again real soon.

I'd like to regress for a minute about how we got here. One year ago this month Tom Porter organized the first get together of the KC trad network thru our contact on Trad Gang. Through his hard work we have shot at several 3d shoots around the area. We have built good freindships and had the comraderie that is common in trad circles. At some we've broke bread, told stories(some may have been stretched a bit) and camped over night at a few. Tom our hats are off to you for making this come to be! (http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/bens5218/IMG_0392.jpg) Tom and Trip by the cook stove. (http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/bens5218/IMG_0393.jpg) Tom at his best!( he dances too!) (http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/bens5218/IMG_0397.jpg) Here's the Bunny hunt group except me (your lucky I'm behind the camera) There was 17 adults(?) and four juniors.

Nice turnout guys, wish I hadn't had two thing to choose from this weekend.
We spent yesterday planning for OJAM IV coming up March 19-22 down by Stillwater, OK. Anybody that has even thought about making a bow should to try to make it there. Gate will open after noon on the 18th and it is primitive camping.

Oklahoma Outdoors videotaped a segment at the OJAM III gathering. You can find it at:

You need Itunes or another program to view it (links on this site). Find the segment on the 'Oklahoma Selfbow Jamboree'.

Hello everyone, I again want to thank everyone for coming and spending the day together.
I also want to thank the cooks, Man what a meal.
It looks like the pics turned out good. Tom, where's the hero shot I took of you? Even though there was no rabbits put into the game pouch, I had a wonderful time. I loved hearing everyone's stories and soaking up the knowledge this group has to offer. I'm glad you enjoyed the Fire Dept. stories. If you guys only knew what people did in the city.
Thanks Horsey for ruining my 40 yard super shot, I lost an arrow on that shot.
I can't wait to do it again. Anytime you guys want to get together I'm in.

To my surprise my girls really enjoyed the entire gathering. I know they had fun, but I was not sure how they felt about walking through the thick grass. They are ready to go again. I would like to thank everyone for being so welcoming. It is nice to hang out with a group of people that you really have something in common with. I have to say the deer steaks were probably the best steaks, deer or beef, I have ever had. When is the next gathering, I am ready?
-
Ricky, how old are your girls?
If I'd gone, I was planning to take my daughter Lindsey who is 14. Maybe next time they can get together?
-
My girls are 10 and 13. They would enjoy having another girl at the next gathering.
-
Ladies (the girls) and gentlemen (the boys), and the rest of you guys too -
This reply is late because I spent the week after the Stomp out in western Kansas doing what approximates work.
What a wonderful time. Yes, we kicked up a couple of rabbits but the consensus was they needed to grow another year. I had a serious amount of fun even though BOB (yes, that Bob) gave me a real hard time for missing the bag during warm-ups. I always say my bow shoots better than I do.
Paul N, I will tromp through the weeds with you any time. That pop bottle was a wily one. Next time I'll bring more arrows. I'd hate for the ones I released to the wild to get lonely.
To the other bowyers in the group... thanks for not snickering at my latest creation. It is about to get a makeover. I learned so much just shooting the breeze with you guys.
Good folks (Especially the youngsters who were troopers), good times, and the food wasn't half bad.
It was well worth the trip. Keep me posted on any future activities.
