This is the Archery Trade Association, they are rumored to be in support of this WHA. Some of the companies that we have helped decide to drop sponsorship have employees on the board of this organization. We need them to publically state that they are against the WHA. Many letters need to be directed at these people. These are the folks that can make or break this fiasco.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for the ATA to speak up against anything, especially if they think they can grease a dollar or two from it.
-
I won't Jason. Just hoping since several board members are connected to sponsors that have "walked away" from the WHA, they might also stand up here where it counts the most. Won't happen if we don't ask and it's better to try and fail then never have tried at all.
-
Jason is right...I've dealt with Jay McAninch before and getting him to back away from benjamins is going to be tough.
You can see where a good many of those people are employed, however, and I just cannot believe that Easton would be so short sighted as to be seen supporting something so slimy as this...I guess I shouldn't say NEVER should I.
-
Sadly, target shooting makes up a lot of the money these companies make. They may have convinced themselves that that is all this is.
-
What is WHA?
-
OconeeDan, Check out on the Pow Wow "The worst idea ever"
-
WHA is an association that is "Wrongfully Hurting Animals".
-
I have just emailed all the people on Vermonter's list. Thanks for the info.
-
Thanks Bill. These are guys that have way to much influence on the way the industry goes, we really need them to come out against the WHA, not to wait and see or worse yet endorse this travisty!
-
Vermonster.
Sent an email to the ATA group listed above.
ATA Personnel
In the last few days I have become aware of a potential threat to bowhunting's future that you may already know of- its name is WHA - their website is www.worldhunt.com (http://www.worldhunt.com) - it is an event involving high fenced whitetails, hunted with tranquilizer darts using bows and guns, for prizes and/or money. If we are to believe Mr Farbman, the "commissioner" of WHA, it will be on television, on pay per view, and in print and DVD formats also.
The stated purpose is to educate the public on how wonderful hunting is, to improve the health of "our" deer herd, and grow the numbers of new hunters.
First of all, penned deer in a high fence hunting enclosure such as the first venue in Gladwin, MI don't affect the health of wild deer in any way, unless they carry CWD, and thus far, in my experience, there isn't any way to cure CWD in a captive, or wild whitetail. So that cannot be accomplished through this activity.
Deer shot with tranquilizers, now we know something about that, don't we? Cleveland Amory was against hunting as you know, and organized a deer rescue in the Everglades, where an annual herd thinning is conducted each year. If my information is accurate approx. 50 percent of those captured died as a result of stress or the drugs themselves, and an additional 25% died later after release as a side effect of the trauma experienced in this trap and transfer operation.
Not to mention that participation in this activity as a "player" or as a sponsor could land you in jail, as it appears based on Michigan law that this would be considered harrassment of wildlife and animal cruelty. Additionally, veterinarians who may participate are going to run afoul of the oath they took when they became vets, and might find their license revoked.
Grow the number of hunters? Hardly. Will real hunters participate in an event staged like a WWF wrestling match? I don't believe so, do you? We will certainly get young people willing to participate in this type of event, because they are malleable and when something is presented on TV its naturally going to be gussied up and polished so that a certain segment of the population will participate, but they aren't going to be hunters.
Let's face it- what Mr. Farbman is doing is providing sales for his real estate business: he is going to have ready made "venues" all surveyed out in Michigan just ready to be purchased and turned into new WHA "tracks" (how do you like that Nascar euphamism?) - and he will be the beneficiary. Not to mention his position as Commissioner...wonder if he will make as much as the NFL commissioner does?
He will or perhaps already has sold it to you and most of your membership as a ready supply of willing participants who will all have to buy the "approved gear" that ATA members can manufacture. Wow- won't that be great? He has carefully selected folks for their voting positions in ATA and approached them to be sponsors, this much we know. I'll give him this much- at 34 years old,he is either very crafty or he has had assistance from some able partners in planning this venture!
Folks, this thing is beyond scary in my opinion. You've got a guy willing to create an event where people play with the lives of living creatures for amusement, fame, cash, girls, and cars? What more could our detractors hope for us to do? There's an old saying I really like and it goes something like " I have seen the enemy, and he is US!" This Mr. Farbman cares nothing for the future of hunting and only about the "bucks" to be made off the back of hunting, and it will likely be the nail that finally closes the lid on hunting in America as we know it today.
Do you really think we need to alienate the 80% of our population that is in the middle- the ones who at this time are neither against, nor for, hunting, but who will ultimately be the people to decide our fate when the inevitable day comes and hunting's future is on a ballot? If this farce goes on as planned, we are doomed.
And, we have not even discussed the ramifications of hundreds, perhaps thousands of "players" with a controlled substance at their disposal- are we going to do background checks on everyone participating so the Jeffrey Dahmers, rapists, and killers in our society don't have an easy, cheap, and efficient means of hurting others, instead of deer?
This thing is laden with pitfalls and no one seems interested in thinking it through far enough to understand its impact. What Mr. Farbman HOPES will happen WILL NOT- he is starting a rock down a hill that will become an avalanche of negative public perception that will be out of his control and ours. You do understand that in our society today the TRUTH doesn't matter, right? It's all about the perception- the soundbite. Do not allow your membership to be drug into this morass by the lure of increased sales. These short term gains will pale in comparison to the losses they'll experience when the public comes out in force against this bastardization of an important American heritage- hunting.
I urge you to disseminate a formal statement to your membership urging them to stay away from WHA and Worldhunt activities for the good of hunting.
Thanks for taking the time to read of my concerns.

Thanks Ray, that is an excellent letter. This will be a black eye for all involved and the way it is being marketed will just splatter over to us honest hunters who really do car about hunting and the wildlife we pursue!
-
Dare I say it.....has anybody considered contacting HSUS or their ilk about this?
-
I would stay away from them John, they are aware. But lets make this a victory for hunters not antis. I have the Michigan Veterinarian Medical Association investigating this now and they have actual power in this.
-
Ray excellent letter!
-
Maybe a mass demonstration? It seems to get results when the other side does it?
-
If we continue to take retailers like Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops to our side, the ATA will be forced to follow just from a survival standpoint!
-
Great letter, Ray. You and I should compare notes some day. Last year I had the unfortunate experience of sitting next to Jay at a dinner conference. A few of the other people from that list were there too. What a bunch of condescending, pompous jackasses. Some of the things that came out of their mouths about how they'd like to see the future of bowhunting were frightening.
He sure didn't miss an opportunity to pitch his BS about crossguns though. Go figure.

guys, this just in from Cabela's..I called them Wednesday morning and got word of this but David asked me to wait for their official response prior to sending out any details...someone else may have already posted this but I didn't see it.
"Hey guys,
Sorry for the delay in getting this to you and thanks again for calling in with your concerns.
Cabela’s was approached for sponsorship of the W.H.A. and we declined to be involved. Furthermore, consistent with the conservation groups and industry associations Cabela’s is affiliated with, we do not support the W.H.A. We are also working with our partners and suppliers to influence their stance as to this issue.
We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to do so. Cabela’s always works to uphold the values of our customers, for they are our values as well. We appreciate your patronage.

Jason,
I hear you. Us on the NABC received two emails from him about our anti crossbow campaign and man, you could have fertilized a 50 acre field with the manure he piled into those two small diatribes.
It was all about how great the ATA was and how concerned they were for the future of bowhunting and how, they didn't have anything to do with the push to legalize crossbows around the country and were acting ONLY in an advisory capacity and AWN, and AWN, and AWN...good grief, if I didn't know better reading them I would have thought they were from Nancy Polosi or Ted Kennedy they were so full of 1. condescension and 2.Horse puckey and 3. more horse puckey
-
All I can say is the ATA's mouthpiece should take a strong stand against Farbman's vision (and soon) or he will lose even more respect than he's ALREADY lost on his crossgun love affair.

As given to me by Mike. ATA stand so far.
I just got off the phone with Jay McAninch from ATA and, while their "official" statement has yet to be released, they are concerned and working to make contact with all involved. They haven't been able to meet with this Farber guy yet. They've made contact, but that's it
-
I have no use for the ATA or its snake oil. They have pi$$-- on bowhunting and its heritage for far too long and only now are many seeing their true light. Sure made everyone forget about crossguns for a few days though, didn't it?
BTW, none of those names listed appear to be BIG GUNS to me!

ATA is only interested in Making $$$ Businessmen aren't hunters, they sell things to hunters. The best interests of these groups (hunters and suppliers) aren't the same.
-
Okay Guys,
Let's continue to build a data base of individuals we can contact!!
-
As written on the ATA site, what a farce.
Bowhunting Preservation Alliance
The Bowhunting Preservation Alliance is a foundation created in 2002 to increase funding potential and focus the industry’s clout in promoting and growing the sport of bowhunting. This nonprofit foundation receives its core funding and direction from the Archery Trade Association, formerly known as the Archery Manufacturers and Merchants Organization.
Under the ATA’s charter, the BPA is a charitable, tax-free organization devoted to education and research to grow and protect bowhunting. The BPA is networked to other organizations in the hunting, conservation and recreational communities. It receives its funding from proceeds generated by the annual Archery Trade Show, as well as donations from companies inside and outside the archery and bowhunting world.

Bowtech, Bear, Hoyt, Martin, and PSE need to be reminded what hunting is about. I have heard nothing from any of them on the WHA, has anyone else yet?
-
I have not had any responses from any of the bow manufacturers.
-
cowards!!!!!!!!!!!there all about the money!
-
Matthews, Merlin and Newberry have all made statements. So not all bow manufacturers are silent
-
BLB,
They need to be reminded that even if they are only about the money, that association with this nonhunting abomination may cost them BIG - rather than boosting sales, they may very well find a boycott of ther products by real hunters....
Our letters and e-mails will hopefully remind them of that.
-
The NABC is issuing a position statement in strong opposition to WHA.
-
That has already been done. I worked with them last weekend on it. It has been posted in the other WHA thread.
We need more than statements at this point though. These folks really don't care what hunters thinks or want, they are after a different market.
-
I am pretty sure thats shown over on the "big" thread on this, Indianbowman...thanks!
-
Guys keep up the good work. I think that there is a lot at stake here and everyone needs to get involved.
