Title: How many deer can you take legally in your state?
Post by: TSchirm on October 11, 2010, 09:48:00 PM
I live in Washington state and have lived awhile back in Wyoming. I grew up in Iowa, but the deer situation there has changed tremendously since I left. I would like to see if members would post what the typical deer limit is in their state. I realize it can vary year to year depending on herd populations, etc, but I'm wondering what is fairly typical.  My hope is if I can ever get ahead financially to travel and hunt deer somwhere besides where I live.  It would be realy nice to have the possible opportunity to take more than one deer.  I know some SE states are very liberal, and I have seen  in some of the posts on this site that other states have the opportunity at more than one deer.  Here in WA, we can only take one deer unless you draw one of the very limited second doe tags.

If the deer hunting is good don't push the extra doe tags. We used to have good deer hunting in Pennsylvania and 15 years and millions of doe tags late its hard to kill a deer.

The Soviet state of NJ, as many does as you want. only one buck per season, comes out to seven bucks.

Problem is getting land to hunt on, or it's public land one has to go to.

Depends.

Bow only or deer taken in any legal manner?  If you include road kills or just hunting.  O assume jsut hunting.

In WI, its 4 a day in some places. In NY, I believe it is 2 deer and one bear with the bow.

Then you can get 2 with the muzzle loader and 2 with the rifle plus a bonus if you draw one. So I guess the answer is 7.  But then there are crop damage permits   :banghead: , add 15 at my friend's farm.   :D

Parts of our state (Michigan) you are allowed to buy 5 doe licenses a day in the southern zone.  The average guy will purchase a Combination license which allows 2 deer to be taken.  In archery season it could be 2 bucks or 2 does, or one of each.  if you take 2 bucks, one will have antler restrictions imposed on it.

Two bucks, unless you get a special *and rare* tag.
Fork on one side big enough to hang a ring on or larger bucks.

No rut hunts. Cali sucks for deer hunting.

I live in the CWD in Wisconsin and our DNR has set the limit at 4 doe tags per day and for each doe your shoot you can get a buck tag.

Hows that for herd reduction stupidity! They use to call our zone the herd eradication zone....but they changed it to the herd reduction zone.

I will shoot a doe or two if I have been seeing deer and I limit myself to one buck, if I get that lucky.....needless to say I'm not over run with deer on my property.

In Minnesota we can take one deer in some areas unless you get a lottery. Some areas is two deer in a management zone and intesive harvest we can take 5 deer. The great thing is in two zones we can take as many deer as we want. But we can only take one buck per year. The rest have to be does and fawns.

In Rhode Island the legal limit is 6 either sex, 2 AO and 4 either sex + 6 antlerless deer (antlerless meaning a deer with antler length of 3" or less). So, in Rhode Island you can legally take 12 deer. No one I know hits that mark, but I am sure there are some, we have a #!*% load of deer in RI. It's tough getting landowner permission (These #s do not include muzzle loader or shotgun)

Ive come to accept the fact that our DNR is more concerned with revenue than actually managing a successful deer herd.  Im pretty much sick of the idiots that run our DNR.  In our state you can shoot the allotted number of bonus does in each county.  So if a guy wanted to travel to each county and shoot his limit of does in that county, a single guy could kill somethine like 300+ does.  And after all that carnage they would only allow him to kill one buck.  Is that really what our herd needs?  A complete slaughter?  Or is that what the money talks people want?  Save the bucks to create bigger ones so we can get more out of state money in here?  IDIOTS don't realize what leasing will do to the average JOE trying to teach his kids to hunt in this state down the road.  We dont have much public land scattered across this state so that doesnt seem to be a healthy option for guys that will eventually get overrun with outfitters and leasing agents.

In the Lowcountry where I live in South Carolina.  You can kill unlimited antlered bucks (antlers 2" plus) and you can buy 4 over the counter doe tags plus we have 12 either sex days that you can kill 2 does a piece on.  Our season is Aug 15th-Jan. 1st.  Quite a lot of deer you could kill aint it.......Oh and also you can hunt on WMA's and and kill even more does there without tags depending on the limit per WMA.

I hunt a bow only area in NY. I can kill unlimited does as long as I check the head in with DEC and get another tag. I also can shoot up to 4 bucks by using early season either sex tag and than later my regular season tag, than using tags that are good for buck or doe that I got by turning those doe heads in. As soon as I  shoot a buck on one of those tags that I recieved from turning in a does head that tag is done. Shawn

in the upstate of s.c., i think it's around 12 or so deer, but since check in stations were eliminated i guess there's no limit.  one thing to keep in mind when your states dnr sets limits that insurance companies are playing a huge roll in lobbying for the excessive bag limits.  i think the last average for auto repairs i heard was $5000 per car that hit a deer.  that means some insurance co. spent about $20,000 in the last two weeks on my 12 minute drive to work.

Only one buck or either sex on extended season. Maybe a doe tag if you are lucky to draw one. This year I was lucky enough to have 2 deer tags and two elk tags. So far 0-4 and not much time left. Someday I also dream of hunting some where I can harvest multple deer in hunt.

As mentioned before, in the southern 1/3 of Michigan and in the NELP/TB zone, the "unlimited" on antlerless deer is more than you could ever possibly kill.

In my area, with my 4 tags, with a bow, 2 are either sex/1 any buck, 1 buck 4pts on a side or better and 2 are antlerless only. In firearms, 2 are 1 any buck, 1 4pt's on a side or better and 2 are antlerless only.

I live in Ohio and you can take 13 deer but only one buck reguardless of method use, archery, muzzleloader, gun. Problem is no one wants you on their land or it has been leased by a hunting club or private organization and you have to pay to hunt. Also this 13 deer is causing a lot o poaching down in the Southern part of the State and guys brings the does up North and saying they got it on Urban hunting zone. A better system needs to be put into play. I think the Insurance companies are in with the State to reduce deer herd to near zero. Also 13 deer means 13 deer tags you have to buy.

Nebraska.  You can, with a combination of various permits, kill basically unlimited deer.  You can only have two permits that allow the killing of an antlered buck.  But antlerless tags are almost unlimited.

Tags are about $30 (seems like it changes each year).  A straight bow tag allows one either-sex and one antlerless.  Antlerless-only permits allow two antlerless.

Youth tags are $5.

In two firearm zones, there was an Earn-a-Buck requirement this year for the first time.  No real word yet on how that turned out.

I think it was said earlier but in Illinois for archery you can kill two bucks and all the does you can carry off.  Your "Tags" are for 1 antlerless and 1 either sex. Fill the first buck tag and you can go back and buy another two tags, 1 antlerless 1 either sex, but you can only kill two bucks total.

Deer tag in Ontario Canada costs $37.50 And it entitles you to one buck only. Have to buy your licence in june to get into the doe draw. If you are one chosen then you can shoot a doe or a buck. One or the other. If you are in an area over populated with deer, and they have left over tags you can buy a second tag for a buck only for another $37.50.

What a change from when I started deer hunting in 1972 at the age of 12. The year before, 1971 we had a closed season for lack of deer. Today, we have permit areas where you can kill an unlimited number of does and fawns and yet the hunters still complain to no end about the quality of our deer hunting and how the DNR has screwed things up. People have short memories. In the permit area I hunt I am allowed 1 buck and can purchase 4 bonus doe tags. At the rate we consume venison, two deer in the freezer is plenty for our family. The population in my area is very high. Yesterday afternoon on my daily 4 mile walk I counted 22 does and fawns. Most were feeding at bird feeders in my neighbors yards.

Anyone ever heard of the farmers and hunters feeding the hungry program?  I think there are a few different programs that are similar to this.  I'm not trying to endorse or force someone to use this program, I'm not spamming the site.  If someone was concerned that they needed to help with the deer population but didn't want to waste the meat then a program such as this is the way to go.  They process the deer at no cost and a rep from the program picks it up and delivers it to food banks and soup kitchens and such.  The only cost to the hunter is the tag.  Farmers and hunters feeding the hungry just happens to be the program around here and they're pretty widespread across the country, especially in the eastern states.  If anyone is interested here's the link.

Too many in NYS.  I count up 12 possibe deer.  You can shoot 3 during the early bow season if you have last year's tags left over.  Then 2 more during archery/black powder season.  One buck during the regular gun season, or this can be used in the later archery/BP seasons.  Then you can shoot 2 does if you get the DMP permits.  And 2 more using another person's DMP permits (legal now). Then you can apply for two more bonus DMP tags in selected areas if you think you need more.

Ron -  Few will ever get 12 legal tags in NY - most will have have 1/2 that at best and most will have less. 2 total for both early bow and late bow/mz - not 2 tags for each season. In 40% of the state, you stand low to no chance of 1 dmp let alone a 2nd - None of those dmp's will have any bonus tags. If an area has bonus DMP's left, then the herd needs thinning and I'll take the tags and try to do so.

Hey Steve,
Haven't checked back since Christmas and I hope you had a Merry one.  I agree most will have less than 12, but I think it is possible, although not probable.  The extra bow/muzzleloader either/or tags I was referring to was if you had tags left over from the previous year.  Plus the big game tag from the year before.  Thanks for keeping me on my toes!  :)
