Title: Scotland needs our support...
Post by: kawika b on March 30, 2011, 04:49:00 AM
A personal request from Sid at Border Archery...

This is a personal request to help with bowhunting in Scotland.

As many of you know, Bowhunting in the United Kingdom is totally forbiden and we here in scotland, have excess numbers of deer to the point where we need annual kulls.
I think that Bow hunting is a valuable resource for revenue collection for the conservation of habitat. When archers are ethically trained, and evironmental needs established, the use of a bow is an effective tool, for hunting AND a very effective source of income for tourism, and the habitat.

If you would like to support a movement that is trying to establish a "landowners right to choose" if the want to allow bowhunting on their land. here in Scotland. then we would like you to follow this link and log in and pledge your support for a change in law here in scotland. It would be a pledge of your wish to travel to scotland to hunt in this country.
Even if your a local scot, and wish to bowhunt, then this is a means for you to have your say.

I have been involved in some meetings and discussions to try and get a movement towards legalising bowhunting. Very early days yet, but without good support, it could proove more difficult.

If anyone wishes to take this post forward to other Forums we would be more than happy of the publicity. Tradgang, letherwall etc... the more help the better.

Thanks

Sid Snr.

I own part of an estate in Lochaber.  There' a little grouse hunting, but most everything is privately owned, and unless you've got connections, you're out of luck.  I too would love to be able to ghost through the timber with my bow like I'm able to do here, but probably won't live to see that change.  Be that as it may, my name's on their list in support as well, and screw the "hunt saboteurs"!

Hi Everyone.

My name is Andy and I am on the committee of the British Bowhunters Association who, along with Bowhunt Scotland are involved in the talks and working towards a possible trial with the relevent Authorities in Scotland into the feasibility of Bowhunting as a valid and legal method of take.

In the next step we have been invited to take part in some Balistic Gel testing of archery equipment, Recurves, longbows and Compounds in Scotland this year, along with other legal hunting weapons.

Hear is where we are reaching out for anyone who can shed some light on any 'Archery' equipment Gell testing carried out before in any country.

Just because we have been invited to take part doesn't mean that the authorities there know what to look for in the test relating to archery equipment as I am sure the results will be different from firearms.

Any help or pointers in this matter will be greatly appreciated as we should be armed with all the facts relating to the above before the tests.

Thanks for posting this thread Sid, and thanks to anyone who may be able to help.

As Ian Kirkwood from Bowhunt Scotland stated in his last update email, we need as many members as possible within the BBA,,maybe a supporter membership is not out of the question from our 'Brothers of the Bow'.

Andy.

My family heritage is Scottish on my mother's side. I am frankly dismayed that one of the most ancient and successful hunting tactics ever to exist on earth could be banned anywhere. Frankly it's the dumbest crap I have ever heard, but hey we do stuff here in the states that is dumb as hell too.  I'll do my part and respond above, but I in all honesty think the ballistics gel testing is just silly.  If they dont know that modern archery equipment  can effectively kill any animal on the planet by now, then I dont know how gel tests are gonna convince the powers that be.

arrowlauncherdj, it may be that we can convince them to use animal carcasses for the testing,  which would be much better. But as they have at this stage invited us to gel test I thought I would try to find out as much info as possible in relation to Archery equipment.

Andy.

If it were me, I'd contact the folks at Grim Reaper broadheads, or one of the mechanical BH companies anyway... I remember commercials where they used the gel tests for their broadheads.  You might could get some data and even video from them.  It's just a thought.

Just sent a note.

I'm in Hockwold Thetford as I write this.  I've been here 5 times in 3 years visiting my daughter.  If the Border Black Douglas company wasn't 6.5 hours from here I'd visit the place.

I just read some of these threads.  It is absolutely ludicrous to think deer, stag, etc would react differently to properly placed sharp broad heads in Scotland!  It is but a political ploy and stalling technique to think the decades and millions of animals taken very humanely with archery equipment around the world aren't testament enough for the effectiveness of bowhunting every where.

I wish people, especially politicians would be honest for just a few moments.

reading the above post referencing ignorant politicians, I was reminded of the Colorado senator who sponsored a (rifle) magazine ban on the basis that once you shot all the bullets, you had to throw the mag away.  She was ignorant of the fact that you reload them!  As an historian, I figure that if something's been around (in this case) for at least the last 5 thousand years, if it could have been screwed up, it would have been by now.  Since it hasn't been, it probably means that whatever it is, is very effective for the task.  Alas, I firmly believe politicians are bred for their lack of, rather than their ability to grasp, common sense.
