I posted on here a couple days ago about building a knife out of raw materials and a couple days in i cant tell its not going to well so i figured i would buy a Helle blank from dyrad bows and put my own handle on that. does anyone have any experince doing this? if so what do you think? is it quality steel? does it hold an edge? Any input is appreciated. thanks. Curtis

I've done quite a few of them and really like them. They're easy to make and look real nice. They hold a good edge but you scratch them up when you sharpen them. Mike

As far as sharpness, they're probably the sharpest knives I've ever gotten from the start.

What happened to the raw material knife you started?

Its starting to turn out (its a drop point design) buts its going to be a little smaller than i wanted so im just going to use it as a learning experince maybe try some file work on it and just play around with it. But i want a bigger functional knife so im thinking of getting the 5' blank and putting my own handle on it

The Helle blades are super blades, wicked sharp! I have used several of them.

The helle blades are great. Fun project. Pretty cheap bang for the buck too.

If anyone wouldnt mind posting pics of the ones they have done that would be great! Thanks

Curt, Ausable's (Tim Valko) got a Helle knife-whole knife, not a blank. The blade's a little straight razor, so yes, they're sharp from the get-go. I have an Ahti "forest" knife from Finland, and it too, is a little straight razor right out of the box. Once in a while, I strop mine with a little jeweler's rouge and a block strop; comes out waaay past the "sharp" stop sign! first knife I've ever had which truly unzipped game, and I know Ausable's is equally that sharp. It would be a good purchase.

Made this one for my brother in law for Christmas:

And my knife, not a kit though:

I used their new small OLA blade to make my knife for the upcoming swap and it's in that thread - I loved the blade, the price and the service from Mike at Dryad Bows (they sell Helle blades also). You can't go wrong - IMO.
Here's one pic of it but there is about 4 on that thread - I call it "Gecko with a steel tongue":

It's a Helle Brakar blade and a wood/elk antler handle. The finger guard is made from antler. This was made for me by another member here.
