It was only about 3 months ago, if that, Frank, but there might be one person left that hasn't seen it yet - ;) . I won the Gut Hook Blank in a gift draw and now here I am, 4 knives later, and gathering stuff and info to do more - "and another one bites the dust" - :D I always loved knives, as is well known, and I really love finding I can put together a servicable one (or 2) myself, after all these years.
First one:

Finished that one last night, besides sharpening and sealing the wood. Now its time to TRY and make a sheath.
-
Here's the first one I ever made. It was made from a Skid plate off a Toyota land cruiser that I had.

This was my first knife and was my contribution to the 2005 St Jude CHR auction. It was won by none other than our own Doug Campbell! To say I was hesitant to send it to a real knifemaker is an understatement!!!
1095 blade, walnut handle, nickel silver guard and pins. The spacer is nickel silver sandwiched between two white fiber spacers.

I posted a thread on this a week or so ago.
Blade is 1084 differentially hardened, nickel silver guard, stabilized spalted birch handle. Made under the guidance of ABS mastersmith Ed Caffery.
Now I am waiting on UPS to bring me some leather tools so I can make her a sheath!
-
you asked
Heres the first knife I ever made...I think I was about eight years old. (http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d60/Oarceas/IMG_0012.jpg) (http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d60/Oarceas/IMG_0016_2.jpg)
I think the handle is cherry with brass around the edge
-
Tom, show-off!! :D :campfire:
Having a mentor like that is a GREAT way to get started the right way!
-

First one I made from "scratch". Man this is addicting. Hoping to get better with it. Not sure I will get to the level of some of the others on here, but nothing wrong with striving to those levels
-
The top two are my first followed by the bottom three a week latter. Not much to brag about but they were a start.

I will say I feel like a pre-schooler bragging about a painting and having it next to a Picasso or Monet. Gosh, ya'lls firsts are better than I ever can think about being.
-
You guys are killin' me. These are my fist two that I pounded out from old files. They never got beyond this stage as I knew nothing about grinding, quenching, tempering, etc!
That's were Mr Campbell came in and taught me thru Trad Gang PM's :notworthy: :notworthy: Doc

GREAT KNIVES GUYS. DHANKS FOR POSTING. DOC FINISH THEM BABYS UP. THEY LOOK LIKE THEY WOULD BE SWEEEET!THAT BIGGER ONE WOULD BE A AWESOME SKINNER.<><
-
BTW,Frank, you gonna show us your first?
-
My first here, still cuts patches for the muzzleloader.
The only power tool I used was a 6" bench grinder. Then used LOTS of wet/dry sandpaper and files/rasps.
The sheath is rawhide, made from soaking a dog chew toy in a bucket of water. Still working fine but gets soggy when in the rain!

I'll never finish those. It's nice to know where you came from ;) Doc
-
This is actually my second.....My first was a failed attempt at a small file knife. I broke the blade while "testing it" for hardness.....no it didnt bend after being hardened!....This one is a lawnmower blade that I annealed shaped and re treated....I owe my susccess to the people on this forum....thanx!

Jeremy, Hope it didn't sound like I was bragging... :D I am just excited about making knives now, and would recommend anyone that has the time to go see Ed. He is a super guy and a very good teacher. Learning from him and handling some of his blades has convinced me to sell most of my "custom"/semi-production knives, so I can pay for a new KMG grinder. Can't wait to get started on my next few knives. This is going to be an expensive addiction!!!
-
tomh, That KMG grinder & disc grinder are top notch. I already got my money out of it by sure enjoyment. It's amazing the other things you can do with one. You wouldn't believe how quickly I can tiller or reduce weight of a bow with that grinder...Doc
-
tomh, I was busting on you a little bit :D A little good natured fun :campfire:
The KMG looks great, but is out of my range. Most of mine have been done on a 1x30" 3-weel Grizzly, but I just got a 2x42 Craftsman that seems to work well. I just wish I could adjust the speed on it. If the motor goes I'll rig it up so I can :)
-
It's only been about about a month, but here's my #1....4" OAL, 2" blade, cocobolo handle, old saw blade. :bigsmyl:
-
Longbow that is a seriously nice piece of wood on the handle.
Is that the patina that was on the sawblade or did you do something to the metal to get that effect?
-
Long Bow, that is a sweet blade and handle. Well done!!
-
Long Bow, I love that style blade. I've got a neck knife just like it that Stickshooter made.
The Coco handle is outstanding. That puppy matches my longbow perfectly. NICE job!!
-
My first metal blade. I purchased from Texas knife works. The scales I made from a VERY nice piece of wood from 4runr.
-
First stone knife blade. The blade was purchased at a garage sale along with some mother of pearl and turquois discs.

Well I'll try this picture posting thing, the top three damascus was my first learning from a local knife maker but the one pictured on the bottom with the osage/walnut handle was truly my first made from a old file, the deer handled one above was my second from the same file.
-
my first...3 weeks ago.
desert ironwood handle from Gene Sanders of G & L Archery (Mantis bows) brass mosaic pins and storm pattern damascus filed back

Ray that is some tasty file work. Nice work on that knife!
-
Okay, I'll throw my hat in the ring. I made these two from a single sawblade given to me by a friend. I blued them to protect them from rust.
I've already used them to skin and flesh a coon and was very pleased with the outcome.

-
Wow! Some beautiful "firsts" here! :bigsmyl:
I don't think we've seen Frank's first yet!
I've been gone awhile, so thanks for all the comments! That was just an old beat up saw blade that now makes me very happy.
-
Well I finished my 1st sheath finally, so here it is!

Thats a super looking combo!
Is the birch a specific species or just unique grain fro a certain part of the tree?
And what finish did you put on the wood?
take care,
Scott
-
Good looking sheath work tomh! I probably had more trouble starting out doing sheaths than the knives! LOL!
-
Thats a good lookin sheath, good job. Here's my first sheath with my first knife. Unfortunately my clamps left marks. Oh well, thats character!! (http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh95/Leftieshot/DSCN0865.jpg) job
-
I've had that happen, Leftie! LOL! Sometimes it helps to put another piece of leather between the clamps and the sheath...just make sure the smooth side of leather is against the sheath. Looks good!
-
That is just run of the mill stabilized spalted birch from Alpha Knife Supply.
Thanks for the kind words. Yes I have found out that leather work is not as easy as it looks on DVD :knothead:
Thats why this is my second sheath in reality. The first one did not make the grade.
-
Very nice knife and sheath Tom.
