Title: Surface Grinder Attachment
Post by: bjansen on March 22, 2015, 07:27:00 AM
I just finished up this grinding attachment and it works great.  Of course, the idea came from Travis W. and he makes a much cleaner and I am sure a better version of this, but thought I would share how I made mine. The hardest part is making the magnet.  I used a 12-20 lead screw for fine adjustment.

Here are some pics along the way (notice the 8" wheel was just a placeholder until the 4" came in).

magnets installed.  I simply used .250 x .250 x 2" rare earth magnets.

Here is the finished product. I mounted a tool arm holder on the bottom of my horizontal grinder and this attachment will slide right in and then take 72" belts.

That's fantastic. Wish I had those kind of skills to make one... How well does yours hold parallel? Also, did you leave the magnets below the machined surface and are they just epoxied in?

You certainly have the skill , try it out!

It holds parallel well (within .001). I left the metal proud of the magnets by about .100 and I ground the chuck whe I first got it up and running I order to make it parallel.

Magnets are epoxied in with jb weld and then I punched the corners in to secure the magnets as well

I'm getting a mill in sometime in April...maybe I could figure out how to put something similar together for my KMG. I saw TW has one to slide at an angle for the "non-horizontal" grinders out there. Assuming most of yours is aluminum?

Nice work......that would come in handy when it comes time to build folders.

Great job man! I was looking at TWs the other day on his site and thought that being a machinist and having access to a whole shop that I should be able to come up with something also.
