Title: bole for barter
Post by: achigan on October 10, 2015, 10:15:00 PM
I just had an old elm tree taken out. Lightning strikes finally did it in. One of the branches had a nice size bole growing on it. Is there any market for and elm bole? I'll cut a slice off tomorrow and post pics. I'm thinking a lot of knife handles and risers could come from it.

I think you mean burl.  The biggest issue with self harvested burl wood is the drying process and getting them to dry without cracking.

If you can it would be best to soak it with paraffin or even dunk it in paraffin if possible and leave just a little open for moisture to escape slowly - then wait about 5yrs.  At least that is what Bowl turners and lathe artists do.
