Title: Grandpas old knife finished(take a look)
Post by: 92Fspc4 on January 01, 2016, 04:22:00 PM
Well at Christmas my dad gave me an old blank my grandpa started from a file.  It was rough shaped but that was it.  It was also covered in years of rust.  I finished it today.  It has oak barn wood scales now with hidden pins.  I left a bit of scale and some small pits to give it character and remind me it was grandpas.  I think it tuned out pretty good.  Its razor sharp now and I think it will be my new hunting knife.  It will be like having him with me again.  I see now I need to clean the glue a bit but I like how it turned out.

Great job-what a cool project. You might already know this, but just in case. Someone gave me this piece of advice and it has helped me out. Take a piece of brass rod and grind a point on it-like a pencil. If some epoxy comes out in front of your scales, the brass point can be used to help lift the hardened epoxy off the blade in that joint by the scales.

Thanks for the advise and the compliment gudspelr. I've been using emery cloth. I'll try the brass rod next time.  I sure love this knife making stuff.  I got a finished knife from my other grandpa I think will get the same treatment soon.  Its in pretty sad shape.  Needs a face lift.  I remember when dad dug that old blank out of the barn thinking I wish I could finish that.  I'm glad he finally gave it to me.
