Title: Help pls!
Post by: Krasus on June 19, 2016, 10:15:00 PM
So I got this knife for Christmas but the handle is a joke. Not a full tang. How do I go about putting new scales on this? Ideas?

That design is pre ordained for that to happen..

You could appoxy it together after cleaning all the surfaces with acetone and it should hold together for light (slicing tomatos) duty but I don't know that it would ever be a super reliable filet knife.. Idealy you could possibly pin it too the handle if you had drill press but the steel is probably hardened and you'd need a carbide bit. If you want to change handles you could do the same thing with a deer antler, just take your time fitting everything.

Good luck,

Todd

You might take a 1/4 inch piece of all thread (2-3 inch) and split the end for 3/4 inch or so and slip it over the tang, drill, and pin through it. Chase the handle hole with a drill to accept the all thread and epoxy it, keeping the joint tight.

This not ideal by any means but it is better than what is there. This illustrates how good design and mechanical bonds are so important.

I would visit my friendly welder and have him TIG weld a mild steel bar on. If done properly, with heat protection for the blade, you can put any length of extension on there you want.

Interesting, that butt loop designed to give the impression the tang extends through the handle

Send it back to Buck it might be under warranty and at least they can see the poor design.

There aware of it. But I'm not paying to mail it back and then wait up to 3 months to get it back. Fix it myself  :)
