I want to get the No Mercy broadheads but need adapters, 3Rivers suggest the 11/32 steel adapters but they are too heavy for what I currently need. They weight 75gr but I found the aluminums that weight 42gr with the 130 grain heads the aluminums would be 172, the steel would put me at 205. I currently shoot 175 feild tips. My question is are the aluminums OK to use? any downfall to them?

The aluminum adapters have been known to bend pretty easily.

never had one bend on me, but that was the ones I used... I would say weight is a down fall, but they come close to the weight Your looking for.

I use the 42gr aluminum adapters with no problems at all.

Dr. Ashby's research show that aluminum inserts are a potentially VERY weak point in a screw-in setup. As always, Ashby is not looking into "best case" scenarios with no bone impact, or light bones in small "big" game. He is advising us on how best to set up our arrow systems so that they will penetrate and kill even with the worst-case hits into heavy bone. In the previous issue of TBM, if I recall correctly, he says flat-out never to use aluminum inserts. Steel are preferably and brass generally OK unless you're going for elk or bigger. Good of you to care enough about the animals we hunt to ask!

My research shows I have never had an aluminum adapter bend while hunting. I currently use steel, for the weight, but for the last 30+ years I have used aluminum.
Whether they are weaker is not at question, of course they are... whether they are weak enough to cause a problem is the question.... see statement above.

We have all the No Mercy's and we carry the Magnus 7075 aluminum adapters, in both 25 and 42 grains along with all the steel ones. The Magnus aluminum adapters are much stronger than your typical aluminum adapters, which are generally made with a low grade of aluminum.
They are not as strong as steel, but a nice compromise. I've bent the cheap ones but it took a pretty good hit to do it, I've not bent a Magnus yet and I use them quite a bit.

I've been using the aluminum adapters for 10 years and haven't had a problem. I use them with 190 Ribteks.

I use steel or aluminum for weight - depends on the head. I have only broken one aluminum and it was while trying to get a BH out of a tree (yes, a bad shot....).

Does anyone know if Magnus offers their aluminum adapters in 5/16?

Use the long adapters and you won't have any problems.

DanDaMan, yes they do. They are 5/16" 30 grain longs if I remember right.

Thanks slowbow, do you carry any and if not, where do you get them. They certainly look beefier than the ones I use.

We don't carry them as we don't have any 5/16 heads that don't already have the adapters installed. Not sure who does either.

I have bent the long aluminum adapters more than once, didnt notice it untill I spin tested my arrows. I bent one on a deer hit in the off side shoulder and have bent a few with judos mounted on them as well as misses into rocks etc. I am tuned for that point weight but am kinda re thinkin this and thinkin about going to a heavier spine and a steel insert. (shooting aluminum) also some of the adapters are hollow.. I stay away from them and only shoot the solid long adapters

You might try a glue in/glue on adapter. These are stronger than the screw in adapters but not as heavy as the steel ones.

For 99% of any hunting situations an Al. adapter will be just fine. If that's what you need for the wt. you want, just go ahead and use them. Good advice about the magnus adapters too.
Personally I've bent both Al. and steel adapters....but both were on hellatious impacts with rocks.... :knothead: :goldtooth:
