I have had extra time on my hands. So I thought I would try to do a build along. So here goes. I will be attempting to make a 62" bow out of Claro walnut and curly Koa. The first thing I am going to do is cut out some riser parts.
-
Here is the walnut. (http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k592/jet26photos/100_2448.jpg)
-
(http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k592/jet26photos/100_2449.jpg). (http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k592/jet26photos/100_2450.jpg).
Once the block was cut out square I cut the profile for the flare.
-
Time to move on to the Koa. (http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k592/jet26photos/100_2451.jpg)
-
The first cut in the Koa. (http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k592/jet26photos/100_2452.jpg)
-
Wow, freehanding those cuts would be a bear for me. I would never get them to fit!
-
X².... really handy!
-
That is some beautiful wood
-
After those two cut its time to fit them together.
I am not good enough with the saw for them to fit . So I have to sand them with a drum. The sanding drum has a stop on it and
I use a pattern to get every thing exact.
-
Looking good bud. Love my brushwolf.
-
That's going to look sharp, looking forward to following along.
-Jay
-
Very nice! I love claro walnut ... very nice.
-
Keep it coming!! Looking very nice.
-
Very nice! Love the wood combo!
-
The first joint is ready . Now to move to the other one.
-
Can you show the sander stop and pattern set up?
-
For the next joint I just start over by cutting out the shape. Then sand to the line using the other half of the pattern.
-

I will get a pic or two put on as soon as I can. The drum I use is 2x3 with 36 grit paper. It seems to do the best job for me .
-
Here is the drum. The black wheel on the bottom is what I call a stop.
-
As for the patterns they are 1/2" plywood. Each one has a center line to keep everything straight. They also have makes to tell me were the lines for the joint is going to be. I line all the marks up an two face tape the pattern down. The pattern usually set around 1/16 back from the edge to allow every thing to clean up.
It definitely took me sometime to get the patterns to fit up before they were ready to be used.
-
Brushwolf I use that same robo sander in my press too for shaping glue joints work pretty darn awesome without having to mod the big edge sander.
Looking good bud
-
Once the riser was fit it is time to move on to the stripe.
-
I forgot to take pics before the glue up. What I did was cut out 1"x1"x2" square blocks. I then cut white and black phenolic 1"x2". This is what I ended up with. The block are Koa and walnut .
I glued everything together with smooth - on. So into the oven for along wait.
-
Thats going to be an awesome looking Mosaic strip Bud
-
Cool stuff Mike!!
-
Excellent, I'll be watching this one!
Bonner
-
So after the stripe is set it's time cut out some strips. The strips got sanded down to 0.050. I then sanded down white phenolic. It got sanded to about 0.035. The next thing to do is mix up more glue and put everything together.
Ready to go back into the oven.
-
Here is what I have so far after the block was cleaned up a little.
And a closeup.
-
That is awesome! A fine chunk of Koa too. The mosaic stripe really distinguishes the Flare. Looks a little like a Blacktial , but without the CNC.This is gonna be a sweet bow! I always struggled with robosanders. You have made pattern sanding look easy.
Bonner
-
You're really stepping up your game. Such talent.

Thanks Dan I was trying to set each piece of wood off with the stripe. I thought the mosaic would be a nice touch. Wasn't really trying to make it look like a blacktail. I hope it turns out how I have it pictured. Can't hardly wait to cut the limb veneers.
-
As far as CNC goes this is about as fancy as I get. Time to put in the shelf.
There is only one thing bad about doing it this away. It can make petty big mess.
-
The shelf is pretty much done.
-
For me the most exciting parts are to come. The riser is finally starting take shape. I'm cutting out the riser to put on some overlays.
-
Very nice!! I'm enjoying this one.
-
Looking great!.
-
:campfire:
-
Thanks guys. I will try to get some more pics up tomorrow.
-
Allright, looking good. Bue--.
-
My my my,that is one great looking riser, this build a long is gonna be fun.
-
To put the overlay on I clean up the cut and get out all of the supply's. The overlay gets glued up and clamped down. The plastic wrap is put on last to keep from glueing everything together.
-
Once the glue is dry there is some clean up work to do.
-
The drum sander comes in to play again. Someday I would like to have a horizontal sander for such things. But until then we will just have to get by.
-
Now that it is cleaned up time to start to make this look more like a bow riser.
-
It seem sometimes the lines just aren't as dark anymore. Maybe welding for a living as something to do with it. :dunno:
So I retrace the pattern before doing any cutting.
-
Putting the new saw to good use.

-
Looking good! Ready to see some more!
-
Forgot to post these. Before the riser was cut out I squared up the limb pads.
-
Nice!
-
Man, this is turning into a beautiful project!
-
When I cut the riser out I didn't saw right on the line. I use my pattern to get each bow as close as possible to each other. A little double side tape holds it all together. And then a trip back to the drum sander.
-
So now that everything is square and to size. I'm going to add some more overlays. These are going to go on the belly side.
-
Looking good!
-
Looks great. Nice work
-
Thanks guys. Here she is cleaned up and ready for some holes. I have more pics to load later. I have firewood to cut right now.
-
This is looking GREAT!
-
Thanks bigbob2 So far everything has went as planned. In this next pic I need to put a center line on the riser. This line is used for the limb bolt holes. And it also gives me a reference for keeping both sides the same when shaping the grip.
-
Putting in some holes.
Doing some tapping.
-
The hole jig is a reworked binghams. It seems to do a good job for me. I have seen were some folks have had problems with the binghams jig. The only issue I had was I wallowed out the holes and had the fix them.
-
Great build along!
Whats the specs for the bow ?
total lenght and draw weight ?

The bow will be 62" and somewhere in the high 50s low 60 range. I haven't decided yet.
-
Great topic ! Waiting for the limb part...
-
The limbs are just around the corner. First I'm going to do a little more on the riser.
Cutting the site window.

Got the site window done time for some elbow grease.
-
Starting out the sander helped remove wood. The rasp helps get the detail in the grip I want.

Sneek peek at the curly koa board for limb veneers.

The dark spot has some ca on it to see what it looked like.

Thanks for letting us watch.
Looking forward to see your cutting the wedges!

-
Those veneers are going to look great with that riser, can't wait to see more.
-
Can you get enough veneer material out of such a thin piece?
-
Beautiful job! Can't wait to see her finished.
-
Thanks everyone. I do apologize for being slow. Got pretty busy with other things . I hope to get some more posted real soon.
Beachbowhunter the board is 1" thick it should make what I need.
-
Beautiful project, I'm anxious to see what you do for the limbs. Thanks for sharing!
-
wow! Amazing work.... I've never seen detail like this go into a build. How many hours do you have into this project?
-
awesome build looking forward to the conclusion to this one!
Curious what you're using to sand your lams/feature strips.
-
Very beautiful work. Thank you for taking the time to take us along.
-Jeremy :coffee:
-
Nyarrow there is probably about 16hr of glue time. There is about another 10hr so far in the riser.
-
Here are a couple new pics. I had planned to have this build finish by now. Something came up and had to put it on the back burner for awhile.
The core is red elm with Claro walnut wedges.

Curly Koa veneers.

A beautiful work, brushwolf!

Mike thats going to be a another sharp looker. I sure am glad I've already got one of yours. Stunning bows Bud
-
Thanks Shawn.

I use a sled to taper my wedges. Once I sand the wedge to thickness it gets tapered.

I am going to shoot for about 58# on this one. The red elm core is all ground. I will try and post some more pics in the next few days.
-
Cool your spacer to taper the wedges/get a slope looks same as mine :D
(But my riser don`t look the same unfortunatly....)
-
That is some truly outstanding work! Good job and thanks for taking us along. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished project.
-
This needs to come back up. Brushwolf, have you finished this bow?
This thread was the inspiration for me to figure out how to do a flared riser. thanks a million!
-
I do have the bow done. I have been wanting to finished the build along. It should have been completed months ago. I have had a lot going on since I started the thread. When it was started I was laid off from my job. The place I worked has since closed it's doors. Now my new job has required a bunch more time away from home. So I do apologize for not keeping up.
-
(http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k592/jet26photos/image-31.jpg) Here are some pics of the glue up of the limbs. (http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k592/jet26photos/image-34.jpg). (http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k592/jet26photos/image-32.jpg)

Will try to do more later. It is now my bed time. Morning will be here very soon.
-
Thanks BWolf. This is a great build-along!
-
This is turning out to be an excellent build along. I've learned a ton already. Thanks.
-
awesome! This is one of those things I've been wanting to do for a long time!
-
Let's put a limb in the form. (http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k592/jet26photos/image-35.jpg)

Once that limb was done I repeated the process for other limb.
-
Some pretty good hooks on that limb shape
-
Yea I use a lot of duck tape to get it all to stay put.
-
Let's lay out and shape some limbs.

Great thread, new to this forum Trad Gang has some really talented people!
-
John, if you're not familiar with the bench then you gotta get in on this man. I lurk on trad gang way too much and I can say this for sure ... the bench is a little community within the broader TradGang. You'll see alot of guys who spend there time here on the Bowyers bench almost exclusively. Maybe 100 or 200 guys out of the 40,000 tradgangers really spend there time building and talking about building bows.
-
LIL Ben I can vouch for that! Have to get my fix nearly every day, lessing of course I'm away at a trad shoot or too busy building a bow.
-
Great build along too!. Been following every step so far, and can't wait to see the finished product.
-
BWolf, why don't you trim the lams and glass shorter before you put it in the press? Do you use the extra for something else?
-

Never really thought about it. I could trim it to the end of the form. The little extra probably helps make the bend it the form though.

The bow turn out 62#@28 and is 62" long. Thank for following along everyone. Next time I'll try to be a little faster.
-
Holy goodness that is a beautiful bow. Love the koa, one of my favorite woods. What kind of finish did you end up using? Stippling came out excellent! I really like how you did that, nice uniform pattern, but doesn't look like a golf ball. Awesome job! Thanks for sharing!
-
beautiful bow with excellent detail work like the mosaics. Nice!

Incredible :notworthy:

Did you worry about grain direction in the wood blocks? Also, what thickness was the black phenolic?

For the finish I filled the grain with massy finish then put spar urathane over it

I use to try to keep the grain direction correct. Now I just glue it up however. The phenolic was 1/8" thick.

Thanks BDub

awesome! very nice..
