Here's my take on doing a flared/footed riser. I was really influenced by Brush Wolf's build along. I think it is more or less the way he does it. So here goes!
You start with wood.. :D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/beachbowhunter/Flare%20along/IMG_0412_zps28895081.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/beachbowhunter/media/Flare%20along/IMG_0412_zps28895081.jpg.html)
From top to bottom: bloodwood, figured maple (for accent stripes), sappelle and bocote. Couldnt believe how much the bocote oxidized.

cut to size.

Here is my approach. I had my wife (a graphic designer), draw me a template that I later had cut out of plexiglass. The accent stripes are 0.140" thick. I overlay it on the wood and use a paint pen to trace. The scratch lines show my boundaries and 14, 15 and 16" riser lengths.

Off to the bandsaw to cut between the lines...

Resaw and grind the accent stripes.

Dry fit the parts....not too bad but plenty of light showing through.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/beachbowhunter/IMG_0430_zps6b37c12d.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/beachbowhunter/media/IMG_0430_zps6b37c12d.jpg.html)

I also had plexiglass templates made from the same file used for the template. However, they are too thin to use as the actual sanding template for my RoboSander. I had to make plywood templates...
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/beachbowhunter/IMG_0432_zpscb62932a.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/beachbowhunter/media/IMG_0432_zpscb62932a.jpg.html)
My brother-in-law turned me on to turner's tape. Really thin but strong double stick tape.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/beachbowhunter/IMG_0434_zpsfd2bdcf4.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/beachbowhunter/media/IMG_0434_zpsfd2bdcf4.jpg.html)
-
The wide templates are very sturdy and keep everything in line. The tape is the bomb...
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/beachbowhunter/IMG_0437_zpsb8a7fca4.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/beachbowhunter/media/IMG_0437_zpsb8a7fca4.jpg.html)
The next dry fit was much better, no light shining through...

That's all I got done on Saturday. Won't get back to it until next week...
-
Looking great. Thanks for taking the time.
-
Very nice..
-
Very good. Bue--.
-
Talk about good timing! I'm gonna try a flared riser on my swap bow and been thinking about what steps where involved for the last couple of days! Thx bro!
-
Beach, you have any issues with that sander? I have one and for some reason if I over tighten it , I get a rounded profile and if it tighten it just enough to keep the drum straigh it slips while sanding.
Anyways , thanks for sharing I attempted this with my swap bow this weekend and failed!
-
I have been looking forward to this. Thanks for sharing.
-
I'am watching
Nice post
-
Love it... I want to learn how to make one of these patterns to fit my bows
-
Beach, very nice can't wait to see how you finish this. Wondering where does one get plexiglass cut out like that,
A glass shop maybe. Like the idea.

Rich, Maybe you could explain what you did and how it failed. We can use this thread as a resource for folks trying to do it.
The Robosander has worked fine for me. I don't remember assembling it and haven't had it bulge as you describe. However it is not for hogging off a lot of wood. After I tape the piece to the template, I go to my Rigid edge/spindle sander and knock off as much as I can. I go easy and make light passes until the bearing at the bottom of the Robosander does not spin.
I think it is key to remove the thickness of the accents you plan to put in. If you only cut along a line and sand smooth it won't close tight.
-
RW I bet you could find a place. Maybe a sign company. If they don't do it I bet they could connect you to one. I have a plastics place near my work.
Hey Rockkiller, you better be watching. I think this thread was your idea!
-
I'm married and have two grown daughters.I am not use to anyone listening to what I say.Ain't sure if it has ever happened before.
-
Very nice work! Thanks for sharing. Those are some great ideas.
-
Nice job, Norbert. This is a big help for some of us! I can't wait to see the finished product.
-
Looking great!
-
Thanks. I plan to do some more profile sanding on one of the risers and glue them up on Saturday. Not sure I will get to making the bows for a while. Been thinking about making these two for some old buddies on the East Coast as a surprise and to get them into archery.
-
This is one of those really good threads that keeps me coming back to TradGang and Bowyers Bench.. Thanks for contributing..! I really appreciate how much I'm learning from you folks..
-
I like to do these in two steps. I never could get comfortable cutting out the flare on both sides and not worry about breaking it or getting everything lined up without sliding.

I read an interview with Bill Howland of Brackenberry Bows where he said he no longer cooks his risers. He said that the differential shrinkage of different woods and laminations is what caused slippage problems. Made sense to me....I use the California Sunshine.

Didn't get to glue up the second half but got them cut.

I still can't tell which one I am going to like better...

I need to get me some fancy templates/patterns like those! I made a simple arc, in a matching set, by hand that took forever and a day! I also use the double sided tape with good results.
What's nice about it is that the simple curve doesn't need any adjustment for thickness of the accent lines. Compound curves such as yours will limit your accent thickness to the width of the gap between the matching templates.

Yeah, that is the complication. I took me a while to recognize that. Some guys use the washer trick where you put a pencil in the hole and roll it along the edge of one side to get an exact thickness along the entire length.

Huh  :dunno:

Ok picture this...
Lay down a ruler, draw a line and keep the ruler in place. Put a washer up against the edge of the ruler. Stick a pencil tip in the inside hole of the washer and draw a line as you roll the washer along the ruler. The distance (thickness) between the ruler line and the washer line will be the same thickness (i.e. the width of the washer) the whole length. Picture doing that up against your limb template or a riser highlight line template...

:knothead: Got it.I'm a little thick headed sometimes.Ok.. more then sometimes.

Perhaps this one could be used.

Lol!!!! "Google perfect butt"! I'd have a hard time explaining that one to my wife! cool trick tho!!

Really nice combo and work.

Got the second half glued up and cleaned off. Looks nice with a quick spray of sanding sealer.

Well done! I am hoping to have mine up and running this weekend.
-
Wild!
-
Sweet...
-
What are the dimensions on these?
-
Roughly 3.5" wide x 1.75" thick x 16" long (I will trim to 15").
-
Great pictorial Norb
-
Man, those turned out great!! Can't wait to see em in a bow!!
-
Great looking job! :clapper: :clapper:
-
Very nice. I needed to see something good this afternoon.
-
Looking good! I can't decide which one I like the best.

These two are on the right. I had someone really want a different sort of bow so these two took a back seat.
Brought this up for Bowhunteverything to answer a PM on the templates...

Those look great.Your craftsmanship and artistic eye are up there with the best.

Finally got these finished. Made them for a couple of my cousins back east hoping to get them into archery. They are both 38@28, 64". Bocote/Sapelle with curly maple and bloodwood accents. Man gloss finish is a PIA!!

Beautiful beautiful work! You sir are a genuine artists!
-
Have any of you ever tried using a flush cut router
bit with a bearing on the end? If you use it mounted in the router with router table it does the same job as the sanding drum and much faster
and a cleaner cut. Just a thought.
-
The reply on the use of a router was for rmorris
and his concern about a rounded profile with his
sander. You still use the templates the same as with the sander.
-
Sweet!
-
A couple of beauties! Great job on them.
-
You really do nice work
Awesome

Beautiful! first class!

Thanks gents! Couple more to show the wood...
