Title: Small game trio...
Post by: unregistered on December 05, 2009, 05:04:00 PM
Well this was the first year I actually managed to make any kills with my bow, and while they ain't big I figured I would share anyhow. I am shooting a Samick Red Stag with 50 pounds pull at my 28inch draw. All three were killed with cedar arrows from Rose City Archery, the Rabbit and Squirrel with rubber blunts to the head, and the Woodchuck with a Zwickey Eskimo while quartering away. The distances were Rabbit 25 yards, Squirrel 2 yards, and Woodchuck about 30 yards. The Woodchuck made the best eating followed by the Rabbit and lastly the Squirrel. Oh and I also missed a Whitetail this year at TEN #$%@*&% YARDS!

Heh, heh, heh, missed a deer at 10 yards then a headshot on a rabbit at 25.  You shoot like me, only better.   :)
Be proud and keep having fun!

Well I always cook my rodents the same because I really love this recipe. First you roast said rodent in the oven at 300 in 2 inches of water until the meat comes loose from the bone. Then peel off all the meat and remove enough water till you only have about 3/4 inch. Add 1 full jar (no more than 650ml) of your favorite pasta sauce to the water in the roaster and re-add the boned out meat. I then put in sliced up veggies of my liking, usually diced spinage, mushrooms, and celery. Add whatever spice you enjoy for taste, I usually go with a bit of cayenne, garlic powder and seasoning salt. Then put back in oven at 300 until the mix thickens due to the water evaporating and serve on a bed of hot rice. I think this tastes great and its the only recipe I use where my wife will eat Squirrel, usually mixed in with some other rodents meats. Hoping to try it on Muskrat before the end of 2010. Just can't seem to get an arrow into one of the buggers.

Yah the rabbit in particular looks cuddly doesn't it. But you should see what the other side of his head looks like! Almost make a grown man cry lol.

nice going, I think I get just as shook on a woodchuck as a deer, them little critters can be intimidating.

That's the first I heard of eating woodchuck and I never could figure out why not?!  They're vegetarians and nice and big so I'd think you'd get some meat off of one!  We don't have any in Florida where I live now, but I grew up in Western NY and killed alot of them, but I always just chucked 'em cause everyone always said you can't eat them.. just never made sense why not!  It's a shame how some critters get a bad rap as far as eating goes just cause of hearsay.  My dad always told me growing up that if you can kill a woodchuck with a bow, you can kill a deer with a bow and I don't think he's too far off, they're smart and weary, just like a whitetail!  Nice Job!

My dad told me a story of one that he wounded with His bow or something that charged him , he just barely snapped off a shot with the 12 gauage ... self defense ya know
