Title: Photobucket issues
Post by: 4runr on February 09, 2010, 10:21:00 PM
I have hundreds of pictures on Pbucket. I recently wanted to post some pictures of bows I am in the process of refinishing. I had a message pop up on my browser saying I was on an unsafe site.

Hard headed as I am I went back on. A few uploads later my computer locked up. It was late at night so I went to bed after I shut it down. The next morning I tried to boot up, but huh-uh. Would not even boot up in safe mode.

Took it to the shop and ahunnert and ninty bucks later she was back up. Saved the hard drive, but did a total scrub. Riddled with viruses.

They loaded some protection on and when I got her home and all set up, I went to photobucket and the security kicked me off pbucket so fast it was scarry!

Anyone else having issues like this? Is there another site as user friendly as pbucket? I've tried a couple other hosting sites and have had no luck.

I know this thread may be off topic, but we do need a hosting site in order to post pics of our trad gear.

HELP!!!

I uploaded a picture this morning. When I left the site and went back, it popped up that it was unsafe also.

I haven't been back since.

Gonna run a virus scan just to make sure.

I joined PhotoBucket about a year ago and at that time had to give them a cell phone number or you couldn't join for free. I thought that was pretty strange but what do you do.  The next day I started receiving text messages to enter a sweepstakes, etc.  I was getting 2 a day at the rate of $9.99 each as I found out when I got my bill.  Had to call the phone company to get the charges reversed and block them (not PhotoBucket, but whoever they sold my # to) from sending me texts.  Guess nothing is really "free".  I would be interested in a good picture hosting site also.

My computer got a virus Sunday and the tech was able to fix it without taking it in.  He was using my computer just like he was here.  I have seen the advertisements about using your computer at home hooked up to your work computer.  Don't know where the virus came from, but I was on Photo bucket.
BTW  It cost me $225.  I guess the Washington DC areas cost of living is higher.

as you can see above, no issues with pb.

i  heartily recommend everyone on a pc to load and dual boot into  www.linuxmint.com (http://www.linuxmint.com)  asap.  use linux for all internet activities - browsing the web and all email.

NO virus issues with linux.

you can boot back into windows if there are apps and programs you need from microsoft.  linux mint is totally free and comes with a killer suite of apps (like openoffice that works with all ms office files, a world class image editor, a fine pdf file reader AND writer, killer cd/dvd burners, firefox web browser, thunderbird email, and much much more).  there is no need for microsoft any longer.  no more virus frustrations ... ever.

now, as to having viruses on microsoft pc's ...

first, save all relevant data - back it up to a cd or dvd or flashdrive or whatever.  then reload your windows operating system, and make sure to completely rebuild your hard drive - that is, blow everything away by fully reformating your hard drive.  this insures that any virus files are disinfected since there won't be ANY files left on yer hard drive.

after loading windows, load linux mint - use the dual boot option so that linux will share your machine and will allow you to choose which operationg system you wish to boot up into whenever you turn on your pc.

what, you don't have the microsoft operating system dics because they never came with your pc?  a very common condition - they sell you a pc and never give you the operating system, the dang fiends!!!!

in that case, forget microsoft, you don't need those corporate pirates.  just load linux mint and you will NEVER have virus issues again. email spam, yes - no way around that so far.

some data might be hard or impossible to save, such as emails.  in that case, bite the bullet, save just the email addresses manually if need be, and get the heck off of microsoft!

questions?

you were taken in by a scam.

pb does NOT ask for or need a phone number.

the free pb account needs nothing more than an email address - and even that can be a 'throw away' email address and not your main one.

Rob, since I just had my computer scrubbed and reworked, would it still be necessary for me to scrub before installing Linux?

I've had virus protection since the redo.

personally, i don't trust any anti-virus software - it's only as good as the latest version and that might not have caught any newer virus.

that said, when linux is installed side-by-side microsoft, the linux side will always be virus free, even if there is a virus on the ms side.

never a problem, and i do mean Never.  in fact, when booted in linux you can view the linux file/host directory and actually view/use/edit/whatever your windows data - images, videos,
word doc and excel files, pdf files, etc.

i can't say enuf good things about linux - doesn't matter what version of linux yer running, though i do prefer the debian variety, either linux mint or ubuntu ... actually, mint is just modification of ubuntu ... i find that mint is more user friendly, particularly with net access, multimedia, java, flash, etc.
