Most of ya'll didn't know I was secretly studying to be an engineer.....
Not sure if we would have made if not for the AC .....I had no idea that Rob and I would be hunting in 96 degree heat with 98% humidity, with a heat index of 118 degrees!!! :D
That little unit I rigged up made the little camper of Michaels feel like an oasis in the desert!!! And we were in serious need of a break from the morning hunts heat.....and it gave us cool rest in the evening.
I'm still catching up to....and got auction stuff to tend to....I'll post a bone or two along the way....and let Rob do most of the Story Telling.....Yes, he was trying to corner the market on SC pork bellys soon as we got there.
-
Don't look like you are still studying, for it looks like ya got your degree --good job....
-
Like the new avatar, Rob. Looking forard to some more pics and stories :)

If I thought it was hot while on stand Thursday evening, I had no clue what Terry and I were in store for in the coming dayze (and nights!). I'll tell ya, I'm still recovering from that hunt ordeal - it sure gets harder to cope as the years drag on and the stamina wans. I'll tell the tale as best I can muster up the memory, and ask Terry to please fill in whatever I'm gonna forget and leave out. Anyhoo ....
I'm back at my ol' nemesis site #4, sitting up in a "Terry Green modified" tree stand, sun going down slowly as I overlook the weedy, muddy, rutted road, and the open tore up ground areas to my front and right side. Oh yeah, the hogs are here. Last year I'd been winded and made too many times at this spot, and I was hoping things would change this year. They did, and more so than I'd hoped for, too.
It's now 7pm and I spot a lone black hog, 'bout 40-50#, rooting in the front "field", near 40 yards away. So I just sit back, watching, on the ready if piggy grazes closer. Never did - it was a very still and quiet evening, save for peals of far off thunder, but a micro zephyr of air must have alerted the hog and without even looking in my direction it just plain bolted outta town.
It started to drizzle. Cannons of thunder pealing across the land, with shards of lightning bolts once in awhile. The drizzle turned to serious rain but Momma Tree's leaves kept me quite dry. Didn't last more than 10 minutes and gave some relief to the heat and humidity.
About 7:30pm I hear a snort a ways off to my right, just over the road. Then more snorts and lots of added grunts as a group of hogs rooted their way from a close by bog, over the cypress filled muddy creek water, crossed the road and were headed to their "root cellar" on my right.
There was a goodly number of hogs and I lost count at ten as they were milling all around, rootin' and tusslin' and rollin' and rubbin' and doing all the fun things hogs like to do. At least half were young'uns in the 20-30# range, the others much larger, and one that I thought was about 75# or so.

I don't care what anyone says..... Revenge is SWEET!!!!!
-
Wow Rob.....great writing sir...keep it coming!
-
That is an awesome hog in your picture. Keep the story coming, this should go into traditional bowhunter magazine.

You know how that can happen, sometimes? You don't even realize you gave the command to release, and yet in an instant the shaft is gone. Though it sported a bright yellow 4-fletch and flourescent yellow nock, I never saw the arrow in the air, never saw where it landed other than it hit the pig and she was off and running like a bat outta hell, off to my right, behind my tree stand, and into the bush.
At least half the hogs bolted along with her, but those dumb young'uns didn't seem to take heed and barely stopped rooting at the base of a large tree. I reached into the Safari Tuff quiver and drew out another Beman arrow, dressed in hot pink 4-fletch, while the front end sported a double bevel Tusker Concorde. Eenie meenie, tag yer it - picked out the piggy with the best opportunity and 'whiiizzzzzz', arrow on the way. It was a deadly double lung hit on the small "cocktail" pig, with a huge patch of blood at the point of impact. The arrow would have passed through if the ground wasn't in the way and I saw the bright pink feathers shake violently as the hog squeeled and ran less than 20 yards, and inside of two minutes it was stone dead.

Great goin' Rob. I've got Josh in 12 days...he's sitting on "GO" to get here already!!!!

I was somewhat concerned about where the big pig was hit. I picked the right spot, and though I didn't see exactly where the broadhead entered, I felt it was still at least a reasonably good spot. However, I didn't see the arrow in the hog as it ran off, nor on the ground. Hmmm. As always, gotta wait a good half hour or so before looking/tracking. So I wait. It's now about 8pm. The drizzling rain had been replaced with oppressive humidity. I mean hot. Muggy. Hard-to-breathe stifling heat and near zero air movement. I hear some noise at the edge of the front field and out steps (what is to me) a most righteous "hogzilla". I mean near 200# big. Darkish black/gray, beefy big chest, with pinkish/tan scar marks on his right side and top, and sporting an obvious set of tusks. The bushes shake and yet another hog appears - a good 100# charcoal black snorter. Both proceed to destroy any turf in their snout's reach. Never got closer than 40 yards. The "little" one winded me and bolted. Didn't phase the big ol' boy and he kept grinding away for another 5 minutes or so, then just ambled off. Now that was a thrill, I tell ya!
'Bout 8:15 or so, now. I climb down and fumble in my pack for my Main Beam, as the light was rapidly fading under the canopy of the bog and bush. After about 20 yards of plodding, there's the little piggy and snapped carbon arrow. 5 yards to the left are some large splotches of blood - the beginning of the big pig's trail. I walk back to the stand tree and drape out a Kleenex tissue on a bush to alert Terry that I'm blood trailing.
The bush is reasonably tight and dense, but the blood trail is quite good. Though the tracking sign is still there, I'm 50 yards or so in a deep tangle of bush and the ambient light is near gone. It's well past 8:30pm, so I back track, following my tissue trail. Terry had just pulled up, he saw the tissue and knew a pig was at least hit. I took him to the little pig, he congratulated me and flashed a bigger grin when I told him I shot another, larger pig that might go 75#. So we got down to tracking business. Though the blood trail was relatively easy, the bush was thick and gnarly, making for slow going. The hog trail twisted and turned, and eventually Terry sez "Hey, I see some hog flesh.". I'm thinking "What???". He sez, "There's yer hog, looks like about 75#!". Well heck if I could see it, all tucked in tight into the vines, leaves, branches and whatnot! Terry goes to pull it out and revises his last statement: it's a good 100 pounder, for sure! I'll tell y'all one thing: there was NO way I could've drug that hog outta that mess. No way. It was a big enough struggle for Terry to make that 100 yard or so drag through all that crap. God Bless you, Terry!

Great Job fellows. That turf looks amighty familiar. I bet that creek had alot more water in it back in Dec. Nice hogs Rob. DB

When I had come back from my first tracking effort on the pig, to meet up with Terry, I did a search for the arrow and found it - it was a complete pass through, and the feathers were now a matted blood brown and no longer bright yellow. The uber sharp Wensel and mighty Mohawk had done their jobs perfectly, all I hadda do was point those tools in the right direction.
After a brief rest, Terry and I did some picture taking, Terry field dressed the hogs, we loaded them onto the back of his Range Rover, and headed back to camp.
It was late evening, perhaps around 10:30 or 11pm, and we were dog tired as the physical activities and steaming heat took its toll on us both. Back at camp we celebrated with some ice cold Gatorade, then commenced the skinning and butchering. Didn't finish up 'til past midnight, and after some well earned (and most delicious!) eats, we finally bunked down somewhere after 2am.
Steaming jungle heat and all, this was still a truly great hunt for me and I owe a great debt of grattitude to Terry and Michael for making this hunt possible and for Terry's expert knowledge in all manner of hunting - his guidance was the prime reason I had a perfect opportunity to down a good hog, and my fortune was blessed yet again with another hog. Ya just can't beat that, humid heat or not!
Oh yeah, "Stand #4" is now officially known to me as "#4 Revenge"! And I got my revenge two fold!

Great stuff here - great hunt and great pics - GR-R-R-R-REAT!!! Been a long time since I hunted SC porkers (or deer) - too long - except for the heat - but then, we never had Terry's engineering expertise along - LOL.
-
Thanx to all for your kjnd comments, much obliged folks!
The story doesn't exactly end on that first day. Terry has great insight to guessing out pig patterns, and with his direction we made plans to hunt several other areas that looked extremely promising. We saw lots of hogs, but with the miserable heat, "still" air and humidity conditions, we got winded and made almost every time - no other arrows got flown.
On the last hunt day morning, Terry advised I should recheck the far Western slough that was near the blackberry bushes where I killed last years hog. The day before he had scouted it out and there was a ton of fresh pig sign. Not sure of the location, Terry drew up a map on a piece of cardboard - heck, he even laid out road and woods markers for me to spot as checkpoints!
While Terry checked out a huge tore up creek and bog bottom to the North, I stalked Westward on the road, towards the slough. The air was still, the humidity was the worst yet - just drenching everything from head to toe. I see the first marker on the road - a large "J" shaped tree limb pointing toward the bush. I follow that in, spotting other markers on the map - a twin trunked tree, a half hollowed tree stump, a pile up of limb branches, and lastly I slowly crept up to the the log "X" ...
... that was about 5 yards from the lip edge of the slough, with muddy water a good 10' down the slough side. As I slowly crept on all fours, I heard the tell tale splashes of hogs. Near the slough top edge, I once again have to first clean off my fogged up glasses before peeking over a palmetto frond, and down below I count 7 hogs, all in the 40-50# range, rooting the slough bank and water about 25-30 yards away.
I slowly come to kneeling position, shaft already on the longbow, picking out the closest pig and held dead still at half draw while waiting for it to turn from showing me its butt to broadside ...
I got winded once again. Dang! They didn't bolt, but were agitated and swiftly climbed the bank and scooted. Gone. Dang! It wasn't a hasty retreat, so I wiped off my glasses yet again, hunkered down on the ground and hoped they'd return.
Near 10 minutes later I hear grunts and splashes as a mess of hogs charge across the slough about 70 yards to my left. I couldn't see how many, but there was more than just a few, and now they're on my side of the slough, separated by lots of heavy brush and trees.
I wait some more, and see pieces of hog hide cruising and rooting around, so I make a decision to go down into the slough and stalk the edge to where the hogs are since then they'd be upwind of me. The mud is slippery, I've got mud on me everywhere and then I half slipped my feet into the water, soaking into my LL Bean half boots, but I keep moving towards the hogs. After getting within about 50 yards of the pigs, I hear lots of grunts and snorts, and I see 5 hogs charge back down into the water and scramble up the other bank side and off into the bush.
Dang! There went my opportunity for a "hat trick"! Am I greedy or what? :D
-
Great job Rob!

:clapper: :clapper: Great job Rob and awsome story!!!
-
That was too cool let me tell ya!!! I asked Rob if he'd found the X and he said yes and immediately started telling me about seeing 7 hogs hogs, I asked 'how long did you have to wait', and he said, 'soon as I got there'....I said....'what, like 5-10 minutes'?...he said 'no, they were at that exact spot where you said they'd cross when I got there'.
I then told him....."So,....they BEAT you to the spot"!!!! :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Big Fun guys....really big fun. Those that have never hog hunted really need to experience it.
I have a few more pics to share and the pic of the stand 'Rob's Revenge' will be the last one....
For now, here's pic of Rob's beautiful Mohawk.

Congrats Rob! :clapper:

Been busy......and posted pics....but not much else.
Rob done good....he drilled them two hogs.....he was cool under pressure. :readit:
I was really tickled for him....and we did hunt hard despite the heat....and had several run ins that were turned away by the wind. I had 3 boars, three different stalks, all about to close when the breeze cooled off my neck. Some time for a breeze huh?
We ate like kings, and chilled in the camper and my vehicle. We were reminded how much we take for granted. All we wanted every time we pulled back into camp was an ice cold gator aid.
Rob said the hunt was perfect cept for one thing.....next year we would do it in April!!! :biglaugh:
