I shot this blonde muzzled black bear during Bear Quest IV, June 17, 2010 around 8:55 PM. The boar weighed 154#. I shot him with a 56” Pronghorn that draws 55# at 29”. The arrow I used was 31.5” Carbon Express Heritage 250, with a front-end weight of 250 grains. The total arrow weight was 650 grains. The broadhead was a 125 grain Wenzel Woodsman with a 75 grain steel screw in adapter, backed up by a 50 grain brass insert.

The shot was at a quartering away angle at 8 yards from a stand that was 5.5’ off the ground. The arrow entered the left side of his ribcage and exited through his right armpit and stuck in the ground. He died within 30 yards and his death run lasted about 10 seconds.

If you look at his left paw you will notice a wear spot around his wrist. That is where he was putting his weight when he walked. His paw was turned pad side up when he walked.

Bears are snared around La Tuque, Canada and sometimes the Bear Quest guys will see and sometimes shoot bears with only three paws. Since he had a callus worn on his wrist I can only guess that the paw was injured late one season and when he denned up for that winter the injury took a set with the paw turned back.

Nice pics!! Man someday.............. Hey whats going on with the end of your arrows. They look really reflective. Would be nice for finding them in the dark with a flashlight.

Yes it is reflective tape.

I bought the tape you see from here.  http://www.identi-tape.com/hi-intensity.htm  This stuff is heavy duty and has a tough protective top layer that wants to pop up when I wrap it around the tight circumference of the arrow shaft. To fix this issue, I put a little super glue along the exposed edge of the reflective tape and then wrap the reflective tape with electrical tape and let the glue set. It’s one more step to building arrow but it does make finding the arrows in the dark a lot easier. As you can see, the feathers and the nock are bloody which means the tape was bloody too, and it still reflects the light nicely.

Awesome bear!!  gotta love the pronghorn as well.  I shoot a 62" pronghorn #54@28 and shoot axis arrows.  Shot a nice bull elk last year with a 150 grain woodsmen with a 100 grain insert.  Awesome bow, broadhead, and arrow combination.  Congrats!!!!!

Cody, Wy.  went to Northwest College in early 90's should have been chasing more elk and less girls!!  Today I was shooting Axis arrows out of my Selway Lil' Mag 49#@27".  Bare shaft shooting with 145gr. Razorheads with aluminum inserts 30" 500's.  Shoots good, but arrow seems light, worried about penetration.

Nice, congrats on a superb shot. I killed my first bear this year with a longbow in the spring. The only problem with bear hunting is that it's addictive lol. I can't wait till next year, as I have a nice cinnamon bear on my baits.

As a guy asked my wife's grandad one day, "Shorty, where'd ja get that go-to-hell hat?"

Nice bear! I'd love to do that someday. We have a terrible shortage of bears in NW Alabama.
