Colorado elk taken on 25 September 2010. Bighorn takedown recurve, 60# @ 30". 665 grain arrow, Arrow Dynamics Traditional shaft, Abowyer Brown Bear broadhead.
My hunting partner and I take turns bugling/shooting. It was his turn to shoot and mine to bugle. After about 15 minutes working this bull, I had lapsed into daydreaming while raking the tree I was standing behind. Suddenly I saw my partner raise his bow, turn to the left, and begin to draw. After a quick glance in that direction, I realized that the bull had already passed his shooting position and was headed straight for me at about 20 yds. I awkwardly drew an arrow, nocked it, stepped out from behind my tree (when the bull passed behind another small group of trees), and shot when he stepped into the open at 18 yds. After the arrow struck, he ran about 30 yds, stopped, then stumbled and fell down a small slope. It was not till then that I realized what a nice rack that he had!

There was lots of luck, good and bad, associated with this elk kill, as is usually the case.

Thank you all for taking the time to look and reply in such a kind, congratulatory manner. Your comments have helped me re-live the hunt many times over, and for that I am very greatful.
This was a memorable elk season for me, for many reasons - great weather, little hunter competition, and several nice bulls that answered the call but did not take a fall. Archery elk hunting is a sport of extremes - it can incredibly difficult, and on rare days can be textbook easy. My season ended on a textbook day, and I thank you again for letting me share it with you.

Great bull Adrian and couldn't agree more with your "sport of extremes" comment. Much easier to have something go wrong to blow it with one than have everything go right. Congrats....Shawn
