Title: 1st deer with a longbow and wife tagged along...
Post by: Breakfast Boy on October 21, 2010, 01:24:00 PM
I managed to talk my wife into joining me in the ground blind last Saturday morning.  She didn't hunt, just wanted to watch.  About an hour after we got in the woods and set up, my wife's eyes got wide and she pointed to my left.  In as much time as it takes to type this, I seen a deer 5 yards from the blind and broadside, raised my bow and shot.  The whitetail ran 40 yards and dropped within sight of the blind.  I let my wife follow the very obvious blood trail just for the experience.  It wasn't until we got close to the fallen deer that I realized I had shot a button buck.  I usually pass on yearling but everything happened so fast and the deer was so close that it looked bigger when I shot.  LOL!  Either way, with my wife right beside me, it is definitely a trophy to us and time spent together that we'll remember forever. This deer is my first with a longbow, although I've shot deer with both recurves and compounds.  I used a homemade cedar arrow and a 145 grain Snuffer.  I've never used Snuffers before, but am VERY impressed with 'em.  We can't wait to cook those tenderloins over charcoal.

I can't stress how much my wife enjoyed the morning in the woods with me.  All day she kept saying over and over how cool the entire experience was.  She's bowhunted antelope with me before, but for some reason she doesn't want to arrow a whitetail.  Of course, that might change now!  Definitely a great day!

Congratulations!  You have to be careful in these situations though.  Years ago my wife accompanied me on an archery elk hunt and we killed a nice bull during the first 5 minutes of the first morning.  Her comment was - "this is  easy, why have you been hunting for so many days to get your elk, or not, in the past?"

Thanks guys.  I'm sure we'll find a way to eat those tenderloins!

Tarponnut, the bow was made by Don Dow of Portland, IN.  One of the best shooting bows for $250-$300 you'll ever find, in my opinion.  His website is...

And yeah, I love that Stormy Kromer hat.  Sure is warm on those cool mornings.  I just got it last spring, so this was my first time wearing it while hunting.  Won't be in the cold without it, that's for sure.
