About a month ago I received these beautiful 2nd hand Ancient Spirits action boo limbs (thanks again Joel)and decided to build a riser for them.
The riser is finished and my "selfmade" bow shoots better than I'd have ever dreamed. I've never shot this well :wavey:
A friend laminated a strip of plumtree between two blocks of Wenge.

And I started to hack away everything that didn't look like a recurve riser :saywhat: (http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/philil/riser/P1010666.jpg)

I bought this saw guide for the riser projekt, but it's great for cutting angles for knife handles as well.
You should be able to get it in the states...its called "Perfect saw guide" made by Topman-Z tools japan. The saw is a japanese style Kataba without back reinforcement.

And letting the added epoxy cure in a cozy heating blanket borrowed from mum :goldtooth:

Get yourself a few microplane rasps for the shaping. It will save a lot of hours shaping with inferior rasps....
I have the japanese saw system as well and it is very good.
-
Good effort mate. That bow will need to see the NZ alps bro.
Keep the pics comming.

I CAN`T WAIT
Well Tom, it's he only room I got.
Can't say I'm too happy about the all evening wenge-dust-sneezers, but it's worth it :help:
-
Put some micarta-type stuff on top of the limb pads, to decrease the ammount of "wrong angle" that was left from sanding.

then it was lunch on my new workbench :D

very cool!
-
wow. that thing really jumps out of the picture at the end. Very nice work.
-
It's amzaing how so many of you guys/gals just decide to wake up one morning and say:
"I think I'm gonna build a bow today" :clapper:
-
Mixed 1 part epoxy with 4 parts acetone (Massey finsh)
Being the impatient guy that I am I think this stuff takes too long to cure.
Switched to 4 layers of 5min epoxy after the first coat
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/philil/riser/P1010784.jpg)
-
Took her to the range after the first coat...I love this bow too much to stop shooting it :goldtooth:
still a bit pale but at least waterproof

That's a nice looking risor Phil! Well done! ;) :clapper:
-
Philil between you & Hera I feel like you guys could build anything, great job
-
Philil,
Very nice work, what Kingwouldbe said.
Here I am, acquiring all sorts of sweet power tools for bow building, and all I need is a saw and some files. I had better make one heck of a bow after watching you and Hera.
-
Philil, very nice work. Especially with the extensive use of hand tools. I love the way the wenge darkened with the finish. Everything contrasts very nice. Beautiful shape to the riser also. I'd call her Soulmate because all that work came from your soul and she'll be your mate for a long time to come.
-
That is very nice!!!
I don't know how you guys do it....I'm still working on building a birdhouse!!!!
-
Awesome job Phil!!! That is a beautiful riser...and even better that you made it yourself! Great job!
-
why not call it "ASAP"(as soon as possible)or(ancient spirits and phil).
-
I like that See!
Thanks for all the kind words. :campfire:
Although I think my stuff can't really compete with Heras.
I had the whole idea bouncing around in my brain for a year but seeing what hera does with only handtools made me go for it.
Not sure my girlfriend would like the Soulmate-idea Bodork
Still have to improve my finish skills, but it doesn't look too bad next to a border

Evreything was done from the inside of your fist and it fits your fist well; "FISTER"
-
Yep I think "Fister" is a great name. Put me on the list when you start making them. Ya done a great job... that is a very sweet looking bow. Nice shooting also.<><
-
My bad. You're right. Women can be sensitive like that. That wenge looks even better in the sun where you can see the grain. I have wenege on the bow I'm currently shooting.
Just a great job on the riser! Mike
