Last week just 3 days before the end of the hunting time i decide to go in the wood with the brand new quiver i recieved from my family for christmas. it's a great present, so far i used only a side mount bow quiver and i was dreaming about a nice back quiver ... beautiful piece but you have to learn again how to move in the wood with !
After some times walking in the wood i decide to go tree stand for the afternoon, in this first day of january it's very very cold but with all the clothes i can find on me i will probably survive ...
Since some years we have in those mountains a Wolf and snow "situation" and let's said that for the roe deer, when you are lucky enough to get tags (we are 10 hunters and we have for all of us tree roe deer tags on this territory) the best thing you can do now is to shoot only young one during the winter if you want to preserve the "roe deer population bank account".
I had already several shooting oportunity on adult roe deer this year or on very young and small one but never release an arrow yet exept on a young doe from last spring just before christmas.
A this time of the year, the young get 8 months and are big enough to put a good amount a very nice eatin in the fridge !
i was lucky on this afternoon, a doe with two young decide to come close by my tree in the middle of the afternoon just before for me to be completely frosen !!!
i release "almost" full draw like usual an heavy arrow on the little guy of the group ...
he drop down trying to escape the arrow but y saw him runnig with the big "el grande" outside between his front legs ...
the following steps in pics ...
Impact run
(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd133/kiboko_bucket/DSCN2931.jpg)
after 10 yards
(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd133/kiboko_bucket/DSCN2933-1.jpg)
the second part of the arrow 20 yards
(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd133/kiboko_bucket/DSCN2935.jpg)
30 yards "strait down" the hill, do you see him ?
like he was when i found him
(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd133/kiboko_bucket/DSCN2945.jpg)
voila, time to think about something else hunting now , i was very fortunate to shoot something on this last hunting day for the season in these south part of alps

no worry Dustybaer, i shot this nice little fellow perhaps 7 yards but really below the TS on the trail , my TS is looking at the slope of the moutain, so when i'm shooting from this TS i almost never get complet pass thru because my arrow always stop in the ground with the angle
An adult roe deer in our dry mediteranean alps are close to 55 pounds for the bigger one, this one is perfectly repersentative of a young one from last spring.
With this setting of bow & arrow you can go for much bigger animal without a doubt about penetration
-
cool!
-
Congrats on your deer! I really enjoy seeing pics of hunting in Europe.
-
Thank you Rick, unfortunatly bowhunting is still not possible by law in most of the european country, in those country where bowhunting is not legal the pressure of the 'wheel-lobby" is very strong ...
-
Congrats... Great deer.
Frenchenglish is OK... heck, I can understand Cajuns.... you are easy
-
I love those Double lungers :-)

I'm lovin' your back quiver. Who made it? Nice shooting too!
-Jeremy :coffee:
-
Hello Jeremy, the back quiver is a really beautiful lifetime bowhunting thing made by a very talentious bowhunter ! this Bow Quiver was my Christmas present from my family
i don't know if i can put a link ?
here : http://www.northarchery.com/crbst_30.html
-
Very nice!!!
-
It looks beautiful up there! I cant imagine hunting in the Alps!! that is something else. so steeped in history.
I have those CE 250's as well and have had trouble getting good flight from them. How many grains is your broadhead? and did you add weight tubes?
thanks for posting. it was a beautiful story.
-
Thank you Sequoia ...
For the CE 250 my bow is close to 50 with my draw, between 48/49 pounds
the CE lenght i use is 29 with an 2 " external footing with an alloy schaft of 22/16
the broheads is 300 grs (el grande + 100 grs steel adaptator)
and the insert is 100 GRS
for a total of 754 grs arrow and 25/26 % foc
Ower power arrow for a roe deer but you can also have a good surprise with a big "sanglier" ! (you call them i think russian boar)
-
Wow. that is some serious stuff up front!! Youre almost shooting a spear out of your bow lol. that poor little deer had no idea.
I just ordered some 100grn inserts and currently have 125grn points. my arrow is 29.5 inches and my bow is 60# @28. We'll see how she works out.
and ill be calling them Sanglier from now on! thanks again
-
hey Sequoia with below 50 pounds bow sometimes you need a spear arrow ...
look two days after the roe deer on the closing day we made a small drive hunt with some other bow hunters friends before the big closing day BBQ...
Here some get also razor sharp knifes in the wood !!! but my widow and grizzly hAve serious thing to speack with to ... This 91 kilos old boar was seriously wounded far back by a wheely friend, following the blood i finaly found him still very alive fighting with our small dog, he was full of adrenaline, in a very bad mood and playing a lot with his mouth ... and i was really lucky to finish it quickly with a "spear arrow" ... this king of thing can hurt ou badly ... or you have to look to climb a tree quicly
-
I like the pine needle touch! Reminds me of my Pagen days!!!
-
What a beautiful place to hunt ...
Thanks for sharing !
-
Maybe you do need that spear arrow after all. That thing is pretty massive.
Congrats on the Sanglier!!

Beautiful, with gorgeous landscape, imagine in the territory on the top of one of the mountain there is a massive ruin of a old "templiers" castle and it's not far from the sea to ...
but quite difficult for bow hunter, we have no special bowhunting season only and rifles man every where 6 months a year (twice a week they they are doing drive hunt with big dogs) ...
and Wolfs and Lynxs now more and more...
animals here are every thing exept pets ...
it's a total fair chase thing and when finaly you can get something with you bow it's really incredible too ... you take time to make goods pics :bigsmyl:
-
Outstanding story! The pictures are a really nice complement. Good job!
-
 Congrats!!! Good shooting!
-
Very nice quiver and good shot going to be some good eating!!!!
-
Congrats what a hunt!!!!
-
Congratulations
-
I just came across this thread, dont know how I missed it. This is just fantastic!! Did you take him in France? Germany doesnt allow bowhunting I understand. Tell us more about other hunting opportunities in Europe. You need to make a trip to the US and hunt some of the variety of species that are offered here. Is it a rarity for someone to take game with a Bow and Arrow in your country?
Congratulations on a fine animal!
-
Yes i shoot this young roe deer in france , one and half hoour driving from Nice.
It's an open private propriety where the owner was tired to get rifle hunter with a lot bang bang and dogs 3 times a weeks 5 months a year. This guy love horses and need them to be quiet and finaly we found together with my bowhunter association a agreement to get the permission to hunt there . We have 3 roe deer tags for 10 bowhunter. You don't need tags for Wild Hogs
Anyway, Thank you for your interest
Bow hunting is 100 % legal in france since 1995
same periods, law and limit as gun or rifles
only two restriction so far :
- mechanical broadheads are not allowed
- the arrow must weight a minimum of 465 grs
every body who want to hunt in france need to pass an examination call "licence to hunt"
for the bow hunter you have also to be present to an obligatory information day about the basic of bowhunting
So far since 1995 , more than 10 000 guy with the licence to hunt get the information bowhunting paper and get with the right to bowhunt.
In each state you have today a bowhunter association fo big BBQ, to help the beginner and to find place to hunt
In France you still have someting like one million hunter because hunting is, not every where but very often a democratic and cheap thing running by village association (a good thing when you and your family are from a good place to hunt but it's quite also a hard thing to go in sometime)
in the next 20 years, according to the age of the hunter , we will go to divide this number of hunter by 4
Today Bowhunting is the only type of hunt to get new hunter who grow up far from the country
We are lucky, bowhunting is almost "just" normal now, the major problem can be to get individual tags for big game the drive hunt method is very popular every where and it's can be difficult in the cheap village system to get individual tags But if you want to go to the drive hunt with your bow you can do it ... you need to know
In some other country like germany or belgium bow are forbiden, in some other you can only hunt in closed place , in other like one of the north of europe you can only use a mechanic bow
Spain, Italy , France are the most friendly for local bowhunter after in some far est country like bulgaria you can hunt but it's very expensive and commercial
In France to come for hunting you need to present your hunting licence first to get a temporary licence for cheap money
after you need to find a territory, there are not public land where every body can hunt or lotery tags .
every square meter are under the hunting rule of State , private owner or village hunting association
If you get a french friend to invite you that will cost you nothing to go to the place where your friend invite you
if not, you can try by the way of national forest administration. they are selling tags but be careful with the size of what you are going to shoot
voila / i did my best / if you have more question ?
-
That is great! Mostly I am impressed to see that bowhunting is alive and well outside of the U.S.
So, am I to understand that there is only 3 roe deer tags and 10 hunters in your group? Each of you cant shoot your own animal then? When you spoke of northern Europe only allowing "mechanic bow", do you meen a compound?
I enjoy reading of your adventures and appreciate your efforts to communicate them with us.
Thanks for sharing, Jashu
-
yes in this place each of us can't shoot our own animal ... in some place if you get an individual tag you can
In this place you can hunt wild boar and i you are lucky enough shoot a roe deer but only if a tag is stil open . We have also one tag for Red Stag and i was lucky enough to close it this year
For roe deer we try to shoot only Faw because we have a serious wolf problem now , the population go down , before we had some years up to 6 tags of roe deer and 3 of red deer. The Mouflon (corsican ram) almost disapear and hunt stop in the place where you get big snow in the winter co's of the wolf.
In know that somewhere in Norway or sweden , Finland , (??) you can use only a compoud bow
on a political european level (UE) there is a big lobby to make bowhunting allowed in every country but with compoud only ...
-
Great pics kibok&ko,
What a fantastic place you hunt in.
I hope that sometime in my life time I can hunt here in the UK, but I am not holding my breath :-(
Congratulations!
-
David, congrats for your trophies.I like the sanglier and I know how sensible roe deers are.
very nice pics too.Do you live in Nice?If so we are only 2 1/2 hours away.
-
Love it, thanks for sharing. When can you start hunting again?
-
ciao Felix, no i'm living close by Grasse and i never go to Nice it's a too big town for me !
I hope we can met together in the bow trap in Levens in June
Me to i love to much " Wild Boar "
The period change between state, but Next hunting time for us is september , we are not hunting buck roe deer in june any more since two year now because of the natural predation of our new hunting neighbour ...
Thanks to all and i wish that all the european bowhunter can be one day free to go in the wood with sticks & string !
-
Je aime le canard de Grasse. It will take 3 hours drive from my home all on Autoroute.
-
How do you pronounce Sanglier? Like we would as americans? - sang-lee-er? Or would it be- san-glee-A?
-
That is very cool..France does rock...
-
People more rude, less civilized (like me)tend to say "cochon" :D
-
that's completely true, in the north of my country, people are more rude and less civilized
:wavey:
-
But better escargots!!
-
that's completely true, in the north of my country, people are more rude and less civilized
It is not quite true, things have improved lately,we no longer offer sacrifices to appease the Gods :D
-
perhaps but you 're still eating escargot !!!!
-
Very cool! Congrats and thanks for sharing,
-

Great story and pictures. I lived in Germany for three years. Sunday was the only day I was able to stay home and have breakfast. I would make coffee, move to the deck that overlooked the valley below my house, and watch all the Roe deer file out of the valley and come by my house. They would walk right by the house and bed on the ridge above the village I lived in. Your story brought back great memories!

Hello Dan and thank you, i'm sure Hunting can be a paradise in germany because there a very few hunters over there , i believe that the hunting system is not really democratic in germany ...
In my area the roe deer are not realy every where , many many hunters and with the wolf now it's worst and worst ...
