Title: Thanks NC Recurveman-Turkey Hunt
Post by: OBXarcher on April 11, 2011, 08:02:00 AM
Well Cleve hooked my son and I up this weekend. He invited us over to his land to go after some turkeys. We got there Friday night and set up the camper, it stormed and blew pretty good, glad we did not take our old leaky tent.

Then we went out and set up a blind for the next morning. Cleve new several places where they roost. Someone was running dogs one the land and we think that scattered the birds in one area.

Sleeping was hard enough due to excitement but the wind rocking the camper did not help either. Next morning was cool and we headed to the woods.

I set up in the blind, Cleve went to his hideout and my son went to his area. I heard birds gobbling on the roost in 3 different locations around me. I would love to tell a story about great calling and how I worked them in but I am a
idiot with a call. I use a box and slate and call as little as possible. If I try and use a diaphragm someone is going to find me choked dead in my blind. I called 3-4 times to make sure they new "something" was in the area. As I am sitting there screwing with my camera I look up and there he is walking right past my hen, going to beat up my jake decoy. I did not have an arrow nocked, was in a really bad position to shoot. Well I got situated and shot him just as he reached my decoy. Perfect 15yd shot and he went no where. I was in shock to say the least. This is only my second turkey and both have been with trad gear.

After the pics and calls I hear several more fly down from the roost. I call my son and go get him since he has not heard or seen anything. As we are walking into the blind we hear another bird gobble to our right. We get settled, make a couple more calls. I told him don't shoot when one comes in, I want to get some video if we can. We are BS-ing, he is very competitive with me and there is some ribbing about how the "old man" always seems to score first. Next thing you know there is another gobbler standing right beside the jake. As I reach for the video camera he spokes and starts to depart the area. I don't need to say anything to Shane, he is not going to let him get away. One shot and his bird is down too. Two birds in two hours for father and son all thanks to a great guy, thanks again Cleve !!

Congrats to you both on some nice NC birds! I know the feeling of being in a pop up with the wind gusting about, not fun! The dog looks like he or she is pretty content with that bone. Again congrats!

Yep, Comet was happy as could be. We live on a golf course and he is a wimpy house dog here. He got to "live the life" for a couple days. He is going through doggy depression now.

it was really my pleasure I wish I could have spent more time there with ya'll in the evenings after the hunt. That was the first time I've ever been in on  a turkey hunt, the setups and such. I'm kinda surprised we didn't see more they are a borderline nuisance in the deer season. Every evening you normally see 10-15 other them, that would be on the low end. I would rather have ya'll kill yours then kill 5 myself, I've made it this long without one I will be okay a bit longer.

Since Cleve has asked his other thread be deleted I copied my post from there and moved it here even though I have already posted here.

Yes the topic is that good!!...lol

I'm happy for the whole lot of you guys!

I am especially thrilled to know that you're getting to get back outside even if you aren't the one doing the hunting.

Just being able to be there is a blessing in and of itself.

Then being who you are... sharing someone else's success is just cream on top...lol

Besides... as a take off on your tag line. the thought went through my noggin.. that's so true and another truth is "if you're gonna plan on eating turkey, somebody has to kill one!"

You're one of the best Cleve!!!

God bless,Mudd
