After a couple missed opportunities earlier in the year, I was reluctant to "mess up" my big buck area to go after does. After some guys that hunt the same property tracked two deer and walked through every bedding area on the property, I figured it wouldn't hurt to take a doe if I got the opportunity.
Late in the morning I had a doe come through and after making sure there wasn't a buck following her, I took a 10yd shot out of my climber. I'm shooting a 54# Two Tracks Longwalker with AD Trad Lites and Centaur Big Game heads (single bevel). It buried up to the feathers, taking out one rib on the entry and two on the exit. I could instantly see blood as she ran and I heard her crash about 100yds away. I could easily see the blood trail from my stand so I decided to go get my sons Drake and Reed to do the tracking for me.
They made short work of the blood trail and I tagged my first trad killed deer in many years. About 10yrs ago I shot a doe in the corn with a Bear Kodiak Mag just to say I'd done it. This year I decided it would be a lot more fun to go to a stick and string. It sure is! Enjoying each minute of it. Also got to use the knife that Kevin made from the riser cut-outs. Works great!

My sister is in town from Washington DC and hasn't had venison in awhile so I grilled up marinated backstraps for the familiy on Sunday after church. There's nothing like having a great hunt and topping it off with an awesome meal the next day!
Gotta love those Michigan products too. Thanks Chuck and Kevin! Oh and notice the Stormy Kromer hat, made in Ironwood, MI.
My older boy wrote in his journal at school about the track job. Gotta keep that hunting tradition alive and I've got two little ambassadors to their school system now. Drake and I went and testified at the House Committee hearing for the Hunter Heritage bill this spring. I can't wait till they get to go out hunting for the first time in the spring turkey season. He'll get to see firsthand how hunters can band together and make a change legislatively and then go out and take part in the first chance younger hunters will get in this state. I got to shoot a limit of doves after helping push Michigan's dove bill through a few years back so I know the sense of accomplishment it is.

Great Job! Congratulations.

Wow, Gabe. Very awesome. I'm really excited that you and Jimmie have been bitten by the traditional bug. More challenging? No question. Greater sense of accomplishment? No question. Michigan's heritage in traditional archery is second to none. Now I'm just waiting for more traditional hunts on the show. I'm sure they will be coming.

If I could ever convince my buddies to give up their ruts for taping, we'd probably have more traditional hunts on the show. It's tough enough to get one on tape but to get two stands, camera and longbow in a tree, well let's just say it's a bit harder. But, we'll keep trying!
