Decided the best way to kill my first trad elk with a longbow was to leave the compound in another state... worked out pretty well! My first big game animal with a longbow (javvies dont' count), got him on the 2nd day with a good shot and he was down within a 30 seconds. Hunting back home in CO, with a 2pc Big Jim Buffalo 50# @28 with a 710gr arrow- about 150fps. Had a great week and we got my friend a cow on his first time as well. Sure is nice carrying a 1lb bow around all week as opposed to the alternative!
Glad to see so many 1st trad kills on here along with mine....

Thanks guys, when the arrow hit well my 1st thought was nothing but thanks for having meat in the freezer again after skunking out entirely last year with a total of one dead quail all year (a record since I was probably 8 yrs old).
My second thought was that I did it with the longbow, followed shortly by my bow being thrown about 10 yards straight up in the air the second the bull went out of sight. I had called him in still hunting in dark timber around noon to about 18 yards or so, with a steady wind which most know is the exception and not the norm! Gave me plenty of confidence that I could take my time to let him come in on his own speed and wait for a good angle. A couple days later I almost had a shot at a bear too, but at 10 yards I still needed at least 5 more minutes of light to be able to see where my arrow would have hit. Next year maybe!

Congratulations on your first bull. There is nothing like it when you take that first elk with a trad bow. I know after field dressing the cow elk I shot and getting it hung in a tree, I just sat there for about an hour thinking back on what I had just done and my hunt for the last two days in the mountains of SW Colorado. After making four trips out to the trip I was wondering if I had lost my mind but after grilling some backstrap, all of the sore muscles went away.
