My buddy and I headed out wednesday evening after work to the main farm I hunt to try and shoot a doe on film. It was very windy and I figured we weren't going to anything but the temps were falling so that kept my hopes up. All of a sudden I hear my buddy say get ready, get your bow! I get my bow and get turned around, a doe with 2 yearlings circle around to down wind but never caught are scent! The doe came way to close and offered me a shot at 10 yards, when I shot she rolled into the arrow and I hit her right under the spine. She bolted out of there in a hurry and all was calm again, that got my heart going as I started to do a little interview for after the shot! We gave her about 35 mins before we went and tagged her. We tracked her and got a tag on her, since it was so early we got back in the stand! It was getting almost out of shooting light and decided to start lowering everything down while it was still light enough to see what we were doing.
I told my buddy that I would lower my bow down last, just in case a buck strolled by. Once we got the camera off the camera arm and in the bag I lowered it to the ground, I then was waiting for the camera arm so I could lower it. I turned around to check a path and down the hill came a buck! I grabbed my bow and said "Hobie there's a buck, I'm shooting him. Sorry we're not getting it on film." The buck came almost straight to the tree and turned broadside for me at 8 yards, I hit anchor as Hobie tried to stop him. The buck never stopped and I shot him as he took a step forward. When I released all I saw was my arrow disappear behind the shoulder, he bounded off 3 times and just stood there 25 yards from the tree. I started getting excited again as I was telling Hobie "he's going to go down, he's going to go down." He fell over right there and I was slapping hands and trying not to fall out of the stand lol
We finished lowering everything and got down, I went and got my arrow that was stuck in the ground and took the short walk to the buck. We got to him and checked him out, after giving thanks we headed to find the doe. The doe made it about 150 yards and even circled back on her own trail. The blood trail was easy to follow, I did have a exit hole barely. The exit hole was from the tip of the broadhead only but I thank god I had that hole. I ended up taking out both lungs on the doe somehow and on the buck I took out both lungs and the top of the heart!!! It's a day I'll never forget in the woods!
