Title: Georgia Spike
Post by: BowHunterGA on October 11, 2016, 11:45:00 AM
This weekend I headed to a small lease I acquired this year just south of Atlanta. I check a couple of cameras I had placed a few weeks ago and when I only found hogs on them I decided to strap on my stand and gear and do some scouting for fresh sign.

At about 4pm I came upon a flat with a good number of white oaks and could hear a few acorns dropping here and there. With the wind from Matthew still around 18-20 mph I knew they would continue falling through the evening. I found a heavy trail and recent feeding sign. I found a good tree for a climber with some decent cover about 25' up so up I went. I wanted to be a bit higher than normal since the wind was blowing pretty hard and causing some erratic wind directions. By 5pm I was settled in (and strapped in good for the wild ride of Matthew) and waiting.

At around 6:10 I caught movement directly in front of me and a mature and fat spike walked out into the flat. He slowly made his way over to me and somewhere around 6:45pm offered me a broadside shot at about 15 yards. The shot looked perfect and as I watched him run off knew the tracking would be short. About the time I was going to loose sight of him he wobbled and fell. Just 40 yards away. I just love success when you walk into an area practically blind, set up on fresh sign and then it all comes together.
