I called the fellow, he seemed like a good guy. I didn't think maple was tough enough to handle that, but maybe it does. I have to taper and sand my stuff by hand. After all that work it hurts to have one blow because of a bad backing.

I wouldn't use it. Like you said, too much work to take a chance on the most critical part of the bow. If you value your time even at minimum wage, you'll see that the cost of the backing is nothing compared to your wasted time. That's how I look at it, but I do manage cost for our business, and I value my time a lot more than minimum wage.
