Title: New start. Switching from right handed to left handed
Post by: Dyoungn on June 28, 2018, 01:16:15 PM
First time post to tradgang. After 4 years of shooting right handed, but being left handed and left eye dominant I’ve decided to make the switch. I successfully hunted every year right handed but I am unhappy with my accuracy at longer range shots 25+ yards. Does anyone have any advice or has anyone overcome making the switch before? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Tradgang!  I learned to shoot left-handed a few years ago just because I wanted to have the choice. It is awkward for the first few weeks, but most people seem to figure it out without much more trouble than that. It is a lot easier than learning to write left-handed would be. There really aren’t any complicated moves that the hands have to make. I recommend you spend the time to do it, and then after you get used to shooting left handed, practice both right and left handed. It’s the best thing you could do for your shoulders.

Thanks for the reply!
I never thought about shoulder relief and the versatility of shooting both left and righty. I bet I could find a situation or two where that could be used in the field.  It is very awkward right now, and I’m trying to practice GOOD practice. It’s kind of a clean slate so I’m going much slower than when I first started shooting right handed. I’m also practicing with both eyes open while gapping, which is also new.

You will figure things out shooting on one side that you can use on the other. Something about your grip, shoulder rotation, etc. that you hadn’t realized before. It’s kind of fun.
