Hey guys. Lately when I shoot my third finger feels like it is really getting hit hard by the string. So much so that I've started developing a callous on the ball of my finger. Then tonight while shooting I looked down and realized I had a worn a hole completely through the side of my big shot buffalo which is a pretty thick glove on that third finger. What causes this? I'm unaware of anything changing in my shooting form but I'd really like to fix whatever it is. Those gloves aren't cheap and it's painful on both my finger and my wallet.

Could be any number of things, all related to your technique, IMO.
String elbow too high? Uneven pressure of your fingers on the string? Short bow with too much string angle at full draw?
OR, most likely IMO is, too much tension in both the bow hand and the string hand/forearm. IF the string makes an "S" turn as it rides on the fingers at full draw it could be putting most if not all the pressure on the ring finger. To test this, draw the bow, then really relax your bow hand. Does the bow want to turn like a propeller? If so, your bow hand AND your string hand needs serious work.
General suggestions, as we can't see what you are doing without a video.

Thanks Arne. I'll go home tonight and see if thebow twists in my hand like you say. I'll also try and get a video up for you to see.

Ok hopefully this works. Always have trouble with uploading videos and stuff. Also I apologize that the video is vertical. Never occurred to me until later on.

Trenton, go to your video and find the share button under the screen. Click on that and a blue highlighted code will show up. Right click on the blue code, right click then click copy then come back here and paste the link.

Watch your hand at release. See how it drops sharply down? There's the ring finger problem. Now how to fix it.
You are drawing with all arm then trying to move the hand to get off the string.
Need to draw with the back then just relax fingers so string flips them out of the way. Getting the hand off the string is not something YOU do, it is something that happens. Get to full draw then finish the shot by pulling the string shoulder back during which the string flips fingers out of the way.
Hand should move straight back along the cheek. Not straight down as in video.

Ok, I'll work on that. Is my elbow too high? I've heard people say have it straight in line and then I've heard others say that having it slightly elevated is good. I think that part of my problem with the release also is that my glove has a really heavy groove work into the stalls. Now that I out a hole in it maybe that's a good excuse to get another one.

No not too high, really just right. Aligned with the draw force of your bow, don't fuss with elbow position. It's just that you are not finishing the shot with your back, instead you are finishing with your hand.

You could try changing your stance. Get your right foot back so that a line going through both feet and both shoulders hits what you're shooting at. It will feel different when you draw, your string arm should not get tired when you shoot.

very good info

In my case it was a high elbow. Arne has got you squared away. >>>----> Ken

Shoot I completely forgot about this post. Whoops :banghead:
My release seems to have cleaned up quite a bit. The funny thing is that I don't have much time to shoot anymore, and the best releases I get are the first few after not having shot for a long time. Also got a new glove so we'll see if I start wearing through that one.

Pay attention and make sure the string pressure is 50% on the middle finger 40% top finger and 10 bottom finger. So in actual terms let the middle carry more weight than the first and the last less than the other 2. This will clean up your release and get rid of your calluses.
