We will be heading there next year. The outfitter recommended staying at Africa Sky is this where most stay when you get there? They say also an extra $80 to help you get through customs was that worth it? It seems like it would be but just wanting to be sure.
Thanks any input

I hunted in Namibia, so didn't spend the night in Jburg, so really can't help there.

also I remember some one giving a luggage suggest on a larger piece that had a built in cart. Does any one remember the company? I could not find a post with that info.

I stayed at the Afton House, first rate accommodations. I don't recall paying anything extra to get through customs and I had no trouble.

I took an SKB gun case and packed a lot in it. Bow, doz arrows, broadheads, everything I could get in it. However, one thing you need to do ! Tape a sign on the outside "ARCHERY EQUIPMENT - NO FIREARMS" This was suggested to me and it worked like a charm. I had no problems. I also put the TSA locks on it. That was if needed they can check, but you shouldn't have any problems. Book all your luggage all the way to your final destination.
If you haven't book your flights, I highly recommend Lori Ginn with Travel Express. check it out at travelexpressagency.com. She does a great job of getting you there and back. She can also book your motel stay over there as well. She will take a lot of stress out of trying to make connections. She also shops for the best buy on airlines. Just a note - for the long flight over to Africa, I paid a little more for an exit seat. There will be no seat right in front of you and gives a lot of leg room. If you don't do this, you will be sorry on a 16 hr flight. Give Lori a call, you will be glad you did. One of our flights had been cancelled and we didn't know about it, but she was watching and got us rescheduled right away.

Afton House was more than we could have hoped for. Picked us up and even made a special trip to meet us at the airport with the hunting gear that we left with them after our hunt to go sight seeing. No extra charge. All for $100.

Thanks for the replies. I think we are set

I had NO problems in Jburg airport. I had heard a lot of bad stories, but everything went smooth. Didn't have to bribe anyone however our bags were booked all the way into Namibia, so we didn't have to clear customs in Jburg with them - only our carry on back packs and it didn't amount to anything. Jburg opened my back pack and just looked a the items on the top. They never looked at everything. It was really easy. In fact even at Windhoek Namibia, they didn't open my luggage in customs. I did have a sign on the outside of my luggage "Archery Equipment - no firearms". I believe this really worked as when we left Denver, they saw it was a rifle luggage and asked about it, but when they saw the archery equipment sign, they didn't bother with it. Just said have a good time.
The only place that wanted it open to take a look was NYC when I returned. The city cops took the gun case into a different room and asked me to open it. When they saw it was only a bow, they wanted to hear my hunting stories. They were good guys.

When I was there Afton House charged around $100.00 for pickup, a nights stay and return the next morning.
When they take you to the airport the next day you will be meet by one of their people who will take you to the airline ticket counter and I did tip him..
I used a rolling duffle made by Eagle Creek and was able to take two bows and a arrow tube in the bottom half and clothing in top half. Be careful with weight as airlines are tuff on weight.Dont over pack on clothing as your PH should have laundry service
