Title: CWD and deer lures
Post by: Don Stokes on October 10, 2018, 03:41:09 PM
I saw recently that the State of Mississippi is considering changes in the hunting laws for next year, and I'm wondering if this will be a trend. Deer lures using real deer urine come from game farms, and so does CWD. Mississippi is considering making deer lures using real urine illegal. It will also be illegal to import any part of a deer from another state whether CWD has been found in that state or not, unless it has been fully processed. One deer has been found with CWD in MS, and the state is pulling out the stops to keep it from spreading. Are other states doing this too?

Michigan is implementing the same rule since they discovered CWD. No urine based scents. They are also making baiting illegal (next year). I don't remember the exact rule on bringing animals across the state line. I think it's something like you can only bring the skull cap without brain tissue attached and deboned meat.

It's a good idea. People are the biggest factor in the spread of cwd.

Virginia outlawed deer lures containing natural body fluids three years ago.

My buddy today told me Tennessee is doing the same thing along with not allowing carcasses, only boned meat.

If you look at advertising for the scent companies they are all expanding heavily into synthetic right now to keep their sales up.  Companies that are not doing this will be in trouble quickly.

I don't use commercial scents, but I've been known to add my own to scrapes; I manufacture it in my kidneys. I think it works just as well to fire up a buck.  :bigsmyl: CWD has never been known to infect humans, so I should be OK with that.

I agree and do the same on scrapes. Though years ago I use to do scent drag during the rut and have had many a days the multitude bucks came to me nose to the ground following my doe in heat right to my stand. Took a few year to realize I need to make a loop around my stand ha ha.
I had some on the ground walk right to me. No shot opportunities and a spooked deer. You learn real quick.

Mad cow disease/scrapie/CWD/Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

I'm not convinced.

In SE MN it's illegal to use any attraction scents and Mn has the quartered or boned thing too. The DNR here wants to shoot every deer, even made tags in the CWD area $2.50 as many as you want.

Virginia put a similar law into effect last year. I use preorbital scents wicks and occasionally ever calm on my boots. Kinda sucks.

I didn't know all this was going on. As usual, Mississippi is behind...

Just got an email for the first confirmed CWD deer here in the U.P. Dang it!

I think CWD is more wide spread than known and has been longer than deer breeding has been around.  I had not heard of the scent ban.  Although it makes good "scents".  Get it?
Sorry.  Bad pun.  I've switched to Skunk Fusion from real skunk cover scent.  Not quite as potent but seems effective.   Maybe the attraction scents will be as well.

Here are a couple products that we are trying not sure if they work yet used last night to make some scrapes. These products are the way future is going to go.  The creator of them is a good friend and he developed all the Primos syn. scents for them

Ummm, the introduction of cwd to wild deer populations is widely known and documented.

The real thing has been banned here in Ontario for some time now. For deer and moose.

Since starting this topic another deer has been found with CWD in MS, in the county next to mine, maybe 30 miles from my property. A young buck. That's the second one, and it is 150-200 miles from the first one. Not good.
