Title: Forward Handle Fever
Post by: evgb127 on May 24, 2019, 05:42:19 PM
About a year ago I had the opportunity to pick up a nice JD Berry Northstar.  Upon arrival I started feeling a little flush.

Then I picked up a Howard Hill Big 5 and started getting the chills...

And today when my Northern Mist Sprague arrived it became a full on fever.

Who else is afflicted?

I have a Morningstar, 2 NM Whispers, a McBroom and I had a Northstar but I let it go . I really like the way they feel and shoot.

I have a Whisper and a North Star.  Have been looking for another Whisper or Valor or Morning Star.  Reverse/forward handle ASLs aren't the only bows I shoot, but I like their shooting characteristics a lot.  Because the limbs are flexed less for a given draw vis-a-vis a standard riser, can usually get by with a 2-inch shorter bow as well, which makes them a bit more manageable out of a tree stand.

I used to think they looked rather weird, but one kind of gets used to the look.   :goldtooth:

I have a Northern Mist Whisper and Ramer, both shoot great and are a very forgiving bow to shoot. The forward handle looks a bit different but is very easy to get used to.

I have been getting the bug to get one. Leaning toward one of Steve's bows.

Definitely do it.  Out of the three I have it is my favorite. The JD Berry is a close second.

That McBroom dual shelf sounds interesting.  Do you have any pictures?  Also, my Sprague feels about as close to your old Green Mountain Catamount as I will ever get.

I have a Northern Mist Sprague ordered. Placed the order at the Kalamazoo Expo in January, so another month or so of waiting.

Jason - yes it was.  I’m happy to help. I think I may have a full on addiction.

Thanks for posting the photo, shooting both sides is a challenge but it’s coming along well.

I think the Whisper is very close to the Green Mountains that I had. Jim made a fantastic bow!!!

A few years back, I gave a high school kid some arrows,  Hill leathers, and a Kramer reverse that i bought from J Bonin, sexy tillering on that Kramer/Hill.  He went out to take walk on opening day of deer season, just to see what it was all about, shot a broad head through a deer.  It went down really quick. I wonder if he is still hunting deer with it.

Evan, I'm going to breathe some new life into this for you.
I too have contracted the virus, it was years ago, but I'm afraid I must've gotten a new strain.
I have several reverse handles and a few more on the way.
I'll post some pics later.

Brandon, given the number of bowyers you’ve convinced to design forward handle bows, I’m afraid your case may be incurable. On the plus side, I can think of worse afflictions.   :biglaugh:

My one and only RH. A NM whisper. I wanna use it more but I wish it was a few pounds heavier as it feels “light” in a way. Could just be that it is so smooth as it is only 2 pounds lighter than my other ASL’s. I need to commit to it one of these seasons.

Don't think I have enough ticks left to get into different style bows.  I have too many bows that don't get the love they deserve.  May focus on my heavy longbow and some stout Red Balau shafts, and concentrate on Public Land hogs.  Probably won't get after deer this year.

Yep. I've been afflicted for many moons. N.M. Whisper. It's certainly well named and loves heavy wood arrows. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Nice bows guys—EVG-is that a 50 @ 27” Morning Star?  I think I might have owned that for a short time!    I have a Whisper, Morning Star, and a Taipan and they are great shooters.  The Whisper hasn’t made any meat yet but the other 2 certainly have.  They definitely look a little funny but I think every longbow guy should own at least one!

Yes it is.  The string grooves are a bit asymmetrical, but other than that the bow is a beauty.

I make and shoot both standard and reverse handle bows but I generally prefer reverse handles Some have fancy overlays but most ftp://are just simple, small broomstick.-style handles like this one.

Cool, I bet it is the same bow.
