When I started more than 50 years ago, it was just called archery.  Didn't know I was traditional until folks started calling me such.

My dad always tried to guide me towards traditional equipment. He was upset when I brought my older brother's compound to the archery hunter's course. He was even more upset when I bought one a few years later.
Fast forward 15 years and numerous deer.
My buddy Damon told me about the JLMBH and how much fun it was. Then we went squirrel hunting with curves. I used my Dad's Shakespeare. What a blast!! Then when the hunt finally came, I won two bows, and met some of the best people I have ever met. I havent picked up my wheelie since. Every time I shoot, my dad is there. He is in a home with Alzheimer's and never knew about my transition, which saddens me, but I know he would be proud. He walks the woods with me every time I go.
It started with my Dad, and was realized through people like Damon Wilber and Shawn Leonard....and everyone else I have met so far.

I got my first bow as payment for work, bought some arrows and shot. I sucked big time!!! I bought a compound for a while but got bored after a while, all machanics no thinking. I worked with a guy in FL which shot a recurve and we got together one afternoon and he showed me how to tune the bow and my arrows and I havent put it down scince. I shoot about 100 arrows a day and cant stop. My 8 yr old and 12 yr old both have bows and shoot with me. This year the 12 yr old will go hunting with me in Mo and can't wait. I can't think of a better way of keeping the occupied.

I was invited to a bow shoot by a fellow gang member, Starkman, and his enthusiasm for trad shooting and hunting got me interested. I had been compound hunting for years, but my interest grew stale in the last few years. Nothing but trad now. Love it.

I feel like a kid again with a good bow in my hand. I'm really coming to a full appreciation for what good equipment is capable of.

Read Fred Bears Archers Bible and bought my first recurve at a swap and shop. Strayed for a few years for lack of traditional equipment in my local archery shops   :banghead:   but found my way back. Coming back has been the greatest thing I ever did. The rest is history.

Watching and learning from a friend and mentor (Mr.Lawrence McGuire) is what got me interested.  Then reading every thing I could get my hands on and then just trying traditional archery. That is it. After that I was hooked. It has become a way of life for me.

I started out as a compound shooter/hunter. One day while shooting with my friends one of the guys shows up with a long bow. It looked pretty cool and boy was it quiet, much quieter than our modern compounds. I should add my friend Reiner shoots this bow or any Trad bow very well.

I asked to look at his bow and he handed it to me. I was taken by how light weight it was compared to our modern compounds. He gave me his shooting glove and some arrows and gave it a try.

I didn't shoot his bow very well. He told me that I shot it like a compund bow and started to mentor me in how a Traditional bow should be shot.

I was pretty well bitten by the Traditional Bow bug but I coulden't afford to go out and buy one. I had so much money in all my modern archery equipment....Compound with over draw, climbing tree stands, lazer range finders, and camo for every occasion.

One day I had saved enough to by my first Traditional bow. I bought a used Hornes TD Mountain bow and a dozen fletched 2016's. I was on my way. I wanted to keep thigs simple and to tread lighty in the woods.

So for me it's one of my long bows, a handful of arrows that I made and a plad shirt and jeans for camo.Burnt cork to hide my ugly mug. Most of the time I'm hunting on the ground sitting on a stool or bucket, carrying in a tree stand is pretty much a thing of the past for me.

Well thats my reason for going Traditional. Keeping things as uncomplicated as possible in the woods enjoying Mother Nature and escaping from the fast paced get it done yesterday every day life. Every day life is complicated enough why make my relax time or me time complicated too.

I started shooting "traditional" bows back in the 1960's and I bowhunted with "traditional" bows in the 1970's. I shot compounds for 4-5 years in the 1980's before giving up bowhunting. I had gotten rid of all my old Bear recurves and the compound bow just didn't feel right.....

In 1999 I decided to get back into bowhunting again. I contacted a local shop owner Joe Skipp (who is also a TradGang member and sponser) Bought an old Bear Kodiak Magnum and a dozen cedar arrows.....and I felt just like it was 1970 all over again!!!!!

Over the years Joe and I have become very good friends. I joined TradGang several years ago and I have met many great folks who have become very close friends and "family" to me.

The Master of Life has been very good to me.....   :archer:

Had a compound, shot it very well.  Hated everything about it:  the weight, mechanics, tuning, release aids, noise, sights, etc.  I saw a recurve shooter in a magazine and everything clicked.  I remembered how much fun I had shooting an old longbow at barn rats (among other things) when I was a kid.  After doing the research I ordered a longbow.  When it arrived it was the prettiest thing I ever saw.  I quickly ordered a recurve and arrow building supplies.  I went back to the "machine" one last time because my buddies ribbed me.  I missed an easy shot on a nice buck because my pins got banged up, then I wounded a doe and didn't recover.  I've never looked back - 13 years.

Started with a recurve 20+ years ago, never killed anything. Went to a compound for many many years and killed a decent amount of things. Now I want to take care of "unfinished business" and take one how I started. I still like shooting all bows, so sometimes the trad stuff goes along, sometimes the wheeled bow.

I started out in trad when I was about six my dad bought me a fiberglass kids bow at a garage sale for my birthday. A few years and a new recurve later I was still shooting. But ended up switching to a compound for about a year until I ended up getting bored with it and I have been trad ever since.

I've hunted with the compound for many years, I've always wanted to try and shoot traditional/instinctive but never did. This year I just jumped in feet first and loving every minute of it! The compound will be collecting dust this season!

Two years ago, a good friend made me a hickory self bow.  That opened the door to traditional archery for me.  I've read trad books, watched videos, spent hours on the computer reading forums, purchased custom made trad bows, and have done a ton of shooting, and have met some great people.  I'm hooked!

It was the Summer of 1964. I was three and a half. I watched my Father, Mother and four older brothers shoot archery and cried when I was told I was too young to shoot. I had to be able to pull the little Bear recurves all the way to the corner of my mouth the right way and I probably wasn't strong enough to do it. I took one of the 24#@18" bows from one of my brothers and drew it to my ear. My Dad was already teaching my older brothers and one more kid to teach, especially one so young was one too much for a man working 80+ hours a week at two full time jobs. In my family we have half left handed and half right handed siblings. I was the middle kid and was also born ambidexterous. We had two Bear Lil Bear, both 24@18" If I remember right and I would sneak whichever bow was not being used at the time and shoot it when no one was around. When I turned 4 my Dad finally figured he had to show me the right way of doing things and so that is when my more formal disipline of the bow began. I'm 47 and have spent most of my life behind a bow.My life in archery predates the compound and while in my late teens and 20s I strayed to the use of the wheels and cables I returned to the real bows in my 30s. I have never regretted returning to the "True Path" Archery, bows and arrows and the pursuit of game with same is a Glorious Gift from God Almighty. Thanks Dad, You're the greatest because you taught me about something so amazing.

I started hunting with a rifle back in Zimbabwe when I was 5 years old. (Back then, bows were not very common in Zim, and they were very expensive if you were earning Zim dollars as we were) I hunted lots with my father as a youngster and we'd wanted to start bowhunting from about 10 years ago. But with moving out of Zim to the UK and other things that have happened recently, we never got bows until about 5 years ago, and haven't looked back since!  ;)   :D  Traditional bowhunting is my life now!

Started with a lemonwood bow in the late '40s until it broke. Had a friend that planted a seed in my mind the '50s with his recurve.

It started to "bud" in '64 when my dad got me a Howatt Hunter for my b'day. Hit bowhunting pretty hard throuh the rest of the sixties then a archery pause until the early '80s.

Did the compound thing up to Dec. 94 when I bought my first copy of "TBM"" and that started it over big time. Ordered my first longbow from Steve Welty of "Deathwish" (first of a bunch of bows). Been at it ever since and lovin' it!   :p

Golly this chronology makes me feel old!

I started out in the 70's with a recurve, didn't even know there was such a thing as a compound.  Then in the 80's I backslide and used a wheelie bow then in the 90's went back to recurves and longbows.

My cousin made the switch a few years before, and was always bring a bow along whenever we got together.  One afternoon, after finishing up some work on the house, we were shooting in the back yard (me with wheels, and he had a longbow).  Something about that quiet "thump" just finally blew me away..... That was two years ago, and 3 bows.  Only opened up the wheel bow case once since then, took three shots, and put it away.  No fun anymore.  Thanks Brent!

I started shooting and hunting with wheelie bows in the early '80s. Sometime around '91 or '92 I started getting bored with it, and I hated the tech race with everybody at the local clubs. Then one of the guys I shot with made the switch to a longbow. We sure gave him a hard time about trying to compete with his stick and string, but I was secretly wishing I owned a bow so purty. Not to mention how quiet it was, and how much he seemed to enjoy shooting, rather than messing around with all the gadgets.

As fate would have it, a few weeks later (at the last shoot of the year), my Oneida Eagle came apart on me at full draw. The very next day I found a local shop that was a dealer for Black Widow and Jeffrey Archery. After talking with him for a couple of hours I ordered a Jeffery Timberline and a half-dozen Kustom King cedars. I still have that bow and even a few of the arrows, although now my go-to bow is my Turkey Creek.

The last 2 deer I shot with a compound I don't remember the shot. I remember standing, putting tension on the string the next thing I remembered was a bloody arrow in the ground. Thats when I realized I didn't need the lighted pendulum sight, peep sight, training wheels or 10# of cold metal in my hands while hunting. That was in the mid 80's and I haven't looked back.    Pat

when i was about 13 years old two of my "hunting buddies" and i decided it was time to graduate from our air rifles to something a little more lethal for hunting. We all owned .22's and actually had acess to several shotguns, but our parents were very strict on the rules about when we could use them, so we made do i guess.
Trad Bowhunting came becuase compounds looked to complicated for the average cottontail( our favortie quarry). So i purchased a 55# internature viper for $200, my friend kelly got the same bow in #45 and his brother scott got a #45 TD recurve. Many a cotton tails surrendered there tasty legs to us.
As we grew older we chased bigger game, mostly turkey. But girlfriends ruined our time together in the field, as most teenage boys can tell you lol. Now i hunt with out them, mostly alone, for deer turkey and small game.
I guess i hunt trad becuase of its simplicity and the memories it holds for me. Never picked up a compound and never will, it just doesnt feel right to me.

Same old story.  I started out with Trad back in the 60's when that's all there was.  Went over to compounds in the 80's.  After 20 or so years I got fed up with the technology and how it made archery so easy.  By the 90's, nearly anyone could buy a fully set up compound and with one or two afternoons of practice, be proficient enough to make kills shots at 20 yards.

Personally, by the 90's I had gotten so that I was placing in most 3D tournaments I entered, and if I drew on a critter, it was dead. My skill level with the compound had gotten to the point where any score increases came via the latest & newest sight, release, a hotter bow, ect. You better believe I was chasing those extra few points/ FPS for hunting, too.

I went back to Trad several years ago, and Lasik surgery + age related near vision issues has now placed me irrevocably in the barebow camp (can no longer see open sights or bow sight pins well enough to ethically hunt with them).

As my signature says, I'm as Trad as I wanna be.  I shoot & hunt 85% of the time with my recurves the rest with a Reflex Caribou shot barebow & fingers, but have absolutely qualms about using using elevated rests, replaceable blade broadheads, vanes, scent control clothing, ladder stands or ground blinds, ect.

I started hunting deer with a cross-bow,when I was a kid, even before hunting them with a gun. Then, about 5 years ago, my hunting buddy talked me into trying a compound bow. After tw0 years with it, I was bored with it and he talked me into trying trad. equiptment. I was absolutely TERRIBLE for a good 2 years but was having FUN anyway. Now, I've sold my wheel bow and have hunted with my recurve for the past 2 seasons----no deer yet, but a nice "yote...Still having fun---and that's the best part!!

My father made two bows the year I was born. A long time ago. In fact the LW was then drawn on cave walls. Growing up we didn't have as many distractions and we lived on the edge of town so it was natural to grab a bow and go into the woods and play pioneer/indian. I was reborn a few years back and now it is a passion.

Always rooted for the Indians. Was envious of anyone that found an "arrow head". Thought it was all luck. Found one myself while cleaning sod out of a flower bed I was working on! Went to the library to find out more about it. Found out that there is a technique to finding them. Bought a book at a Pow-wow. "Bows and Arrows of the Native Americans" Jim Hamm. Thought it would tell me more about the points I was finding. It was funny, entertaining, fascinating. Had to try making a bow. I was pregnant for my youngest when I found my first projectile point in the flower bed. I've been hooked ever since. Tim turned eleven in Feb.

He sold me a Jeffery Archery Mighty Mag, a tab, and some arrows and I never looked back. Now, I have the bug real bad and I can't get enough of Trad Archery.

I started when I was 10 years old, at a YMCA Camp, shot my first deer at 25 yrs old, switch to the wheels, went back to the recurve, and when I switch back to wheels, it just never did take.

Working in a wheels shop, it really gets obvious, when you hear all the guys complaining about the gizmos that don't work right, and change gizmos and still can't hit anything, and then they blame it on the gizmos.

When I purchased my custom-made "whip" Montana bows and my "Hunter" from Bob Lee archery, it was the best decision I made to sell everything that had to do with wheels.  Now the only thing to blame is "me" and it's better that way, it makes you focus.

My wife said to me " do you have Mad River yet ? "  I said I sure do !

What that means is, I've got the best of the best, no sense looking back any more, now it's time to shoot and learn, and develop habits, that develop character, and influence others to do the same.

" If you're going to fall, fall forward " you'll learn more, and it'll stick with you.

I managed an archery shop at one time, and we had an indoor range.  An older gentleman, Ray Cooper, used to come by almost daily to drink coffee and shoot his recurve on the range.  One day, I eased over there to talk a bit and he asked me if I wanted to try it.  I did.  I was terrible, but it was fun.  Eventually, I bought a used Wapiti recurve and have had them ever since.  I'm still not that great with one, but it's still fun.

I started when I was 8 yrs old, my brother bought me a lemonwood bow. I loved that thing and as luck would have it I broke it Overdrawing it when I was 15. Well at 20 I started hunting with High caliber rifles, then at 30 went to heavy barrell varmint rifles. Got realy bored with it all, so went to Black Powder long rifles and pistols. Lots of fun target shooting, (quit hunting at 37). All this time I still had that first bow in the back of my mind. Decided I would try to build a wood bow and that did it. Uncle  Ralphie and Mike of OJAM and MOJAM fame got me going realy strong. Now have Trad archery deeply ingrained altho I still love smokepoles and BP pistols. I realy like this TradGang site. Thank you TRADGANG.

Started out with a compound bow.  It was a heavy cumbersome thing, especially after toting it up and down the mountain for 10 days on an elk hunt.  My last elk hunt with a compound bow (an Oneida aero force) I had glassed some elk in a distant meadow.  I spent three hours climbing and crawling through oak brush, sometimes on my belly getting into position for the evening hunt.  Just before dusk I crawled up the middle of the ravine in the middle of this park and I was surrounded by elk. Elk in front, back and all sides.  I was ecstatic, my plan had worked perfectly.  I scoped out a decent bull and as I lifted my bow to shoot I was horrified.  I had broken off all of my sight pins on my way getting there.  By the time I regained my composure to think about shooting without sights at the elk closest to me an elk winded me and I was in the middle of a stampede of around 60 elk getting away from me as fast as possible. I did not get to shoot.  At that moment I decided I would change to a lightweight bow that I could shoot without sights for all of my future elk hunts.  I wanted something simple and gadget proof.  I started out making self bows that winter before settling on hybrid longbows for my weapon of choice.

I inherited a Herters recurve when I was 12. My dad had purchased it in 1965 for $45 brand new.  Shot it  once in awhile, but picked up compunds when I was 18 or so.

Fast forward to 1998 or 99 and I meet a guy at the range shooting his recurves. He was having fun and we chatted about my old bow.

He encouraged me to give it another try and I did......and never stopped trying !

Haven't looked back since !

Began at age 8 with a bow I made from a sapling. Graduated to solid fiberglass recurve at 10. Serveral laminated recurves have followed. Resisted the temptation to switch to training wheels without much effort. Switched to a longbow and cedar arrows a few years back. I always thought I was just to stubborn to take up modern equipment - I now stand corrected- I am traditional.

I started hunting with a compound when I was 14 (39 now)and shot for about 2 hours a day, everyday and ended up with a case of target panic so bad I totally froze when I drew back.  Went in the Army after highschool and didn't touch a bow for 6 years, got out in 93, got a bow and I was right were I had left off at with the target panic.  Tried shooting a recurve out of desperation because there weren't any sight pins and took to it like a fish to water and now here I am 14 years later!  Having the time of my life.  Joseph

It all started on a Christmas day in 2002, my little brother told me to give it try. I kind of liked it so he let me use a bow for awhile, then in 2003 I ordered my first bow. I was fifty then and saw things in the woods I had never noticed before, fifty-five now and can't get enough. I will never be able to thank my little brother enough for introducing me to this way of life. Thanks Todd!

My dad and I both shot compounds with fingers never could get used to a release, then one summer while going to college I decided that I wanted to take the sights off my compound and learn to shoot instinctive.  After shooting instinctive with a compund for a month or so I decided I wasn't going to hunt with a compound anymore and started looking for a used recurve.  I hadn't told my dad that I had taked my sights off and started shooting instinctive I was going to just show up at deer camp in the fall with a recurve, but talking to him on the phone one night I told him what I had done and I found out that he had done the same thing and had just ordered a longbow.  He was also planning on not telling me and just showing up at deer camp with his longbow.  We both killed our first deer with traditional equiptment that season and havn't looked back since.

It started for me when I was 9. My brother got the bow, a fiberglass longbow. We used any arrow we could get and we chased the jack rabbits all over. I went on to training wheels until 2 yrs ago. I got to shoot my buddies bow (a Legends bow)-this was his new business after his accident. It was so smoothe and fun I ordered one---havent picked up my compound since.

My first bow was a self bow sort of. It was a tree limb with what ever kind of string I could find to put on it. I used sticks for arrows and just plinked around the yard. My first real bow was a shop project in high school. A you finish it blank all wood lam bow. Then I had a bear 76er and then it was an Allen wheelie bow and a few others untill about 16 years ago I got back to Trad with a Martin hunter. Now I build my own and am hooked bad.

I was about 11, visiting my grandparents in Georgia, and out-shooting my sister with my little red fiberglass recurve that they bought me. I think at that point I was hooked, just didn't know it. But, to finish the story, after I teased her for hours, she got pissed and picked that bow up and shot me in the shoulder at about 9 yards, so I quit teasing her.....

I got a bow for Christmas in 1966 when I was 10.  I still have that little fiberglass bow.  I went through other recurves as I grew up and eventually went to the 'new' compounds. Got tired of the mechanical repetition, weight, and all the 'have to have' gizmos and longed for the simpler style.  I had dreamed of making my own bow for several years but didn't know how.

I bought a Ben Pearson recurve on **** a few years back and haven't even considered shooting a compound contraption since.  I since have made several bows and am hooked on traditional shooting.

Same story as many others. Started as a kid with simple bows. The bow,the string, and arrows. Any arrows I could get. Look at the target, whatever the target was, draw back and hit it. Pure fun.

As I got older, everyone had a compound. Everyone said I needed one. And along came sights, release aids, and every new arrow rest that came down the line.  Soon, I was practicing with my bow because I HAD to. It`s what bowhunters did. I wasn`t shooting because it was fun. One day in October 1989, I drew my high tech compound, and killed a spike buck. Then I realized my hands were not shaking, and my heartbeat was not at redline.  I felt sick instead of elated.

Now I shoot because it`s fun, and just the sound of an approaching deer is all it takes to get me shaking.

I hunted with a rifle, then a arrow launching device (the compound), then a bow. At that point, the fun began!!!

My parents bought me one of the little blue kid's bow made by Bear when I was about 6.Then when I was about 15 I bought a Bear Whitetail C-pound(It had more wheels on it than my truck.  :scared: ).My brother and I would shoot everyday and we loved to shoot at each others arrow.I used the robotic bows until about 4 years ago when I picked up a Tice and Watts at a flea market. Now it's about 10 recurves/longbows later and I ain't going back.

I was tired of my compound and wanted something different. I went back and forth for 8 years, now as of 04' I have been Traditional. I think it makes ya a better hunter, as ya have to get closer. Shawn

Much like everyone else...

I grew up in a small town in Southern Jersey. Wasn't a whole lot to do so was always in the woods doing something of fishing (grew up on the Deleware river). My older brother was cleaning out his room one day and asked if I wanted a old ben person recurve he had. Sure! Went into town and got some arrows and shot the dog snot out of that bow! When I was older and was working, I too bought one of the Whitetail compounds (boy, that thing was a DOG! think it has 6 or 8 wheels on it. The pearson would outshoot it). Last compound I had was a Matthews and shooting it was square pegs in round holes. When to a local indoor range and shot a wing hunter and was all over the place, couldn't put two arrows together to save my life. Picked up a DH Hunter at a hock shop for $50 and really started shooting again. Bought my first custom TD (Timberspirit TD, wish I had that bow back!!!) and sold my Matthews. Never looked back. I just traded with Greg for my dream bow, a Blacktail Snakebit TD and all is right with the world, as we know it!

Your very welcome Greg! Glad to have you as a bud!

when I was about ten I found an old dusty Recurve in my father's garage, he told me he used to shoot with some buddies before I was born,I asked if I could shoot it and he said sure,I took  it to the woods with the one arrow I found with the bow and started shooting at a stump. I guess my dad saw the excitment in my face and decided to clean it up and let me keep it!! I shot that bow and that one arrow every day I could get out to the woods, after a few years I started playing football and lost track of that old Bow,After College, I got married had a few children and only recently started shooting a recurve again....I think back on my Stump shooting days and thank my father for letting me shoot his old Bow, If he didnt let me shoot it, I would most likely never have gotten into archery...Thanks Dad!!

It was 1964 and I was involved in a little Battle of The Bulge action in my Dad's hay shed, when the kid from the next farm showed up. He had two hickory sticks and wanted to know if I wanted to help make a couple of bows. He knew my Dad had a draw knife. I think my uncle felt sorry for me when he saw the result. He bought me a Ben Pearson 20lb fiber glass for my birthday. I've been at it ever since. I still have the first Bear K-mag and one metric mag arrow that I purchased in 1974 for $64.00.

I got bored with wheels and my son was getting old enough to shoot and (being the good parent that I am)I didn't want him to get hooked on wheels. He never needed them for his bike, so why on his bow? My son and I love to hunt and shoot together and that is what it's all about for me.

I guess I am like the rest.  I started in the early 80s shooting a Pearson Wheelie bow.  It got a little too routine and boring so I bought my first Bear takedown.  I love the freeedom of a takedown and the easy way you feel when you carry it.  I now do a lot of Hunting for Pigs and a whole lot of Hiking with a bow.  Funny thing is I love the simplicity of a recurve but I also shoot a Oneida bow (no wheels but levers) bare bow... well it looks like a recurve anyway.  Shoot both Instictive.

It was very simple really.  They had not yet invented compounds which made my choices pretty simple.    :archer:

I first shot a recurve when I was 1 at hunter safety.  I was impressed by the light weight.  It probably had a draw weight of 20#.  This was 1995.  I still went with the compound from the get go and used one for about 8 years.

I went to the woodward dream cruise and happened across a left handed recurve.  I always knew I was left eye dominant and remembered the first recurve I shot.

I bought it for the steep price of $15 dollars.  It was a bear kodiak 50#.  I switched from right to left and to traditional all in one go.  This was only 5 years ago.
