Title: After the hunt...?
Post by: Captain*Kirk on November 04, 2019, 01:50:50 PM
After bow season is over, do the majority of you hang up the bow until late summer/early autumn and get about your business with work, life and family, or stay involved in shooting indoors in winter climates, staying in shape physically, building bows, arrows or other, reading magazines, books, forums, etc related to bowhunting?
For me, I try to do all of the above (latter).
Many times in the dead of winter, I will find an entire month can go by without me drawing a bow. I hate that! I have an indoor 3D range available nearby, and $20.00/hour isn't too much to keep in shape from my POV.
Forums, books and magazines keep archery and bowhunting on the front burner as well. For me, it's like the old saying goes; "Out of sight, out of mind".
So, how about the rest of you?

I like to go year round. Of coarse on the Mississippi coast 30 degrees is cold so getting outside is no problem.

Yeah, kind of hard to get inspired to drag the bow outdoors when it's 15 below zero. Ask me how I know... :dunno:

I'm year round for archery, can even go to a few 3d shoots every weekend through the winter months. Hey Kirk what area of Il. are you from. I'm in the NW suburbs of Chicago.

I try to stay with it year round. I don’t shoot near as much when it’s cold outside but I get into scouting , making arrows, etc. I usually make at least 3 dozen wood arrows for donation at out annual festival.
I do try to shoot just enough to keep muscles in tune.

Nothing I like more than being out on snowshoes, so I shoot year round! It just sucks that all the stumps are frozen. But I have a giant burlap sack full of other giant burlap sacks that the coffee shop gives me. I just keep rearranging the stuffing and replacing the outer layer with another as it wears.

Like to hunt pigs and 3-D as much as I can.  Depending on what the General has planned.

Our deer season runs til first week in Feb. So I really only take the remainder of Feb off from shooting while I’m shed hunting.
March I shoot fairly often unless the weather is miserable. But have to stay tuned up for spring turkey.

Year round. I find trad things to do to help busy myself.  I am really going to try and finish up my selfbow when this season ends.  Now that I have the hunting bow of my dreams, I will spend the off season stocking up and building arrows by the dozens.  Then hopefully I will have an amount only rivaled by Maurice Thompson!  And when I find myself with no way to shoot I will day dream off shooting its pretty much all that occupies my mind year round.

Shoot the bow the least during hunting season...estimate typically 60 arrows over several days per week

Shoot approximately 5+ days/week thru out non-hunting seasons

Shoot approximately thirty 3D's per year.....

Hunting prep 8 months per year

A year long endeavor

Overall, I am shooting less now due to health issues, including shoulder pain. Have had therapy and may need to again. There are several 3D shoots that are very important to me, and I try to attend them no matter what the weather is like. During the heat of summer, I don't shoot much at all until late July when hunting season is on the horizon. I do not like hunting videos at all, so I depend on magazines to stay in touch with archery when not shooting.

I have a short range set up in my basement that I use to keep sharp and ready for Spring gobbler. I do some exercises to keep up my core strength every morning. I use a climber mainly so keeping in shape is a must. At 50 years old and a banged up body, I'm finding out that the ball doesn't bounce back as fast as it used to.

It varies year to year for me. I'll shoot into Jan. just in case I get to hunt a Jan. zone. I may also get after squirrels and rabbits a couple times. Feb and March I put the bow down and my mind transitions into other things, like work and my other hobbies (TooManyHobbies), like metal detecting. I have to get my mind off wildlife for a bit, since my work is wildlife control. I start shooting again early April to get ready for turkey season in May. Then shoot a little bit until mid July, when I start getting excited for deer season again and shoot more.
I'm on tradgang daily though, if that helps.

Z-F; I have to do my Fred Asbell exercises to stay on top of the bows I shoot.  Take some time off and it takes longer to get back in the game, at 61.

*sigh* I hear ya, Terry. But us Yankees have to deal with that white crap, and the clear crap that goes with it (ice) and lately, sub-zero winters. Just trying to figure out ways to deal with it that don't involve relocation... :dunno:

 *Sigh*

I must be missing something..... What does white crap have to do with Bow season or hunting season or your state's hunting season?

Which reminds me when I was in my twenties it snowed about 8" down here yes, we get snow in the South in case you didn't know, and we floated the river when the whole town was shut down....it was 11 degrees.

We went duck hunting so we are not the pansies that you think we might be in the Winter....we STILL HUNT and dont hug the heater....do you represent most northern hunters???

Deer Hogs Bears Turkeys mid August through May - bowhunt Stingrays June July - we never shoot 3D.

We are mixing in a lot more fishing and duck hunting and coyote trapping but all our year is driven by bowhunting.

Probably not. When I was younger that stuff didn't bother me near as much.

Not a thing, sir. I'm talking after the season ends (roughly 1st or 2nd week of January). Not much to do here between then and June..."after the hunt".

I shoot indoor 300 rounds twice/month until spring and then 3-D kicks in for all the surrounding clubs. If the weather is nice I can shoot in my backyard or several of us go over the club and hang out on Sunday mornings.

Yeah, pretty much my line of thinking. I'm considering trying to organize an informal indoor 3D league at the local range...maybe once/twice a month...just to keep the shooting muscles in shape, etc. and keep a little competitive spirit going...
There is no open land where I can go do my favorite activity...stumping...around here any more. It would more than likely get you arrested. Hell, I can't even shoot  legally in my back yard any more (not that it's stopped me). This is not the world I grew up in. We are slowly losing our freedoms inch by inch.

I find myself in the archery/bowhunting doldrums May-July, after turkey season is over and the river starts  calling my name. I try to shoot at least a few times each week  then get more serious again in late July. December to February squirrel and rabbit / stumping is one of my favorite ways to get through the winter, without the self-imposed pressures of deer season.
