Title: tips for reclamation areas?
Post by: mooseman76 on April 10, 2008, 07:04:00 PM
The land I can whitetail deer hunt nearest to my house is all mine reclamation areas.  There are small patches of woods (mostly black locust trees) within larger areas of rye grass.  What sort of things do you look for when hunting these areas?  What are potential food sources?  I've killed 2 does in this area, both by still hunting into the wind on very windy days.  How bout some pointers to help me get the big ole bucks that inhabit this area.  I know they are there, I see them crossing the road near my house during the rut.  Just can never seem to find em when hunting...Mike

The only advice I can suggest is look for funnels and hunt any "edges" you can find where thick cove meats brose of food sources.
Of coarse now is a good time to walk it and find where the big guys have left sign.

Ron, that is exactly why I posted.  I was out walking around for a couple hours today.  Found some rubs in little sections that run between pits.  Seems like a good spot.  Just wondering what do the deer eat in these areas?  No agricultural areas, and no oaks around...Mike

Recently saw something on some show about locust beans???  that the der ate them but only after freezing to change their flavor maybe?  Didn't pay much attention as I don't have them in my hunting grounds.

Like Ron said, gotta use the terrain to up your chances. I used to do well in Alabama on reclaimed strips by paying close attention to the ends of highwalls. These are the vertical mine face when it was active and many older reclaims have this small "cliff" at one end. Look at either end and see which one has a good trail coming around it. A little backtracking into the unmined area will tell the tale of their movements and give you an idea of when and how to set up on 'em.

There are over 600 different food sources that Deer will eat. They are just like a Goat when it comes to eating. Remember they are primaryly Brousers, that means they will nibble on buds and tips of branches, with there four stomachs they can turn woody plants into energy and calories....ONE SHOT...
