Hey, all...I have two vintage Bear Tamerlanes, a '69 HC-300 35#@28 that shoots like French silk, and a '64 'checkerboard' Tamerlane 42@28 that is noisy as a streetcar! I don't recall what I have BH set to on the '64 but I'm sure I have a little room to twist up yet but was wondering if string silencers are the norm on these types of bows? I've seen brace heights as high as 10" on the Tamerlanes and I'm sure twisting up will quiet this thing down some, but the present comparison between it and the HC-300 is shockingly different. The few times I've shot it I was using my carbon indoor range arrows. Could too light of an arrow contribute to bow noise as well?

I think the 63 bh is 7 1/2" to 9". there is some difference in the two bows. HC 300 is much more mass wieght then the Tamerlane. They did make a Tamerlane still when the HC 30 and the HC 300 came out. Is yours the 1968 HC 300? I would guess a 61" string would be close to the factory string for that year. Both are great shooter and lookers.

IIRC, the date of mfg on the HC-300 was 1969. You are correct about mass...the HC has a totally different feel than the Tamerlane, but boy, that '64 is a looker!

Back in the 60's and early 70's California I did a lot of novelty trail shoots, all put on by local clubs to finance their ranges. Competed against a lot of those Tamerlane. I don't recall any of them or other tournament bows being unduly loud or noisy. Every one was shooting aluminum then, I'd try a heavier arrow As I recall the racks of bows at the beer stands, only short hunting bows were braced higher than 8" Sorry can't help more than that, other that to repeat what a well known bowyer told me on measuring a recurve for a string.
Use string or seamstress tape. Lay bow across chair arms, Belly up (the side you see when shooting, just to be clear) Beginning at the nock follow the limb to the top of the curve, hold the tape there, go straight across to the top of the other curve, down to the nock. Subtract 3".
