A few years ago while I was hunting in Quebec, the outfitter which is a friend of mine asked me if I was OK with my long bow on the ground, I said yes. I was about 15 yards from the bait site and I was comfortable with that, the problem was a big black bear came from an unexpected area and walk by me at about 6 feet, I wasn’t prepared for that and the bear caught my wind and took off like I’d never seen nor heard anything in my life.
There was a bear on this bait that was breaking log chains (seriously) and takein the barrel down into the woods away from bait site... Mike told me this was a big boar.

After about 20 minutes of the encounter at 6 foot I moved on the ground another 10 feet off of an old logging path thinking another bear may come down that same way. This time I heard something move behind me and as I slowly turned to look it was the big bore and he seen me, and it was not a pleasant thing, he started popping his teeth and swaying back-and-forth and all I could do is slowly spin around in a swivel chair and have my bow ready...I kept looking at his eyes thinking I will have to shoot him there to penetrate his brain, I’ve shot 21” bears and this was the biggest bear I’d ever seen. As he suede back-and-forth looking at me and popping his teeth the only thing I kept thinking was he’s going to charge at any moment, finally he veered to the left and started walking away he stopped and looked back at me and kept on going and I never seen them again. Two hours later another nice boar came in and I shot over him, I was not fully compose from my two earlier encounters and learned a great lesson that day. I was probably fortunate that blackbear did not charge me.

WHOA! That was an adrenaline rush just watching it, I can’t imagine being right there!

I better just stick to my white tails. Don’t like anything with teeth sharper than mine.  :bigsmyl:

Thanks for sharing.  I was in a tree 7 feet up with my 12 year old son when he shot his bear with a recurve. Fantastic experience sharing with your kids!

Nice video! I was lucky enough to draw a bear kill tag this fall in NW Wisc. Was thinking about using a gun now it's definitely the bow from the ground.

I've shot a couple from trees and a couple from the ground. All very exciting, but the two from the ground were close and personal and the most fun!

That’s cool!
I killed one bear from the ground spot and stalk in Alaska. It was 8 yards.

That is sooo awesome!  I want to come up there so bad.  It would only be about a 12 hour drive from here in central Minnesota.  Maybe next year....

So was the kill made with a stone point or not?

The kill was not made with a stone point. I only had one cane arrow and stone point that went into my first miss. By saying in the video “ I’ll try to shoot one with a wood arrow” was my way of telling the audience that. I really wish I had been more clear but once the video is shot there’s no way of fixing it. Sorry,,, there was no intent on misleading anyone

Nicely done video, love the family involvement.

It's hard to tell for sure from the footage but it looks like the second bear (the one behind the first) was lined up pretty well with the arrow path, which appeared to be a pass-through (given the blood on the barrel).  Was there any evidence that the arrow may have also hit the second bear?

Also, if the stone point arrow (the one that flew high on the missed shot) was already known to have a tendency to shoot high, why would it be the arrow of choice for shooting at a live bear?

Gotta' be careful out there.

Both very good questions

The shooter is left of the cameraman and therefore making the perspective of the viewer different than the shooter. It was clear to the right of the bear in the background. Also, if you watch the video again, you’ll see the arrow stop at the fletching and not pass through.

As far as the stone point, it shot a couple inches higher than my other arrows correct. I did compensate for the difference but again if you re watch the video you’ll see that I comment that the amount I missed was beyond what I accounted for. Admitting it was more than just the couple inches it shot high on its own.

I understand, sometimes what you see doesn't quite reflect what actually happened.  Thanks for the clarification.

Re the stone point (primitive) arrow flight issue, might it have something to do with your bow poundage?  Your bow is modern/seems fast and at least in my experience (long time wood shooter) arrows that have more 'variables' (tip weight and alignment, nock alignment, shaft straightness, etc.) often behave more 'unpredictably' as bow weight rises...the extra KE becomes more critical to how the arrow reacts.  Anyways, I'm glad no bystander bears were harmed in the making of your film, lol.

Thumbs up for you and your family's approach to life and to hunting, that alone is worth tuning in.  Thanks for letting us share.
