Title: White Wing with “Wenge” ?
Post by: Keefer on July 19, 2020, 03:50:06 PM
I’m not sure if anyone has any information or not if “Wenge” was a custom order wood choice in place of Rosewood in the early 1960’s White Wings ?
I have this bow coming to me that I just got this upcoming week and I have one just like it in the “Rosewood “ but I never knew or ever seen any “Wenge” advertised as an option in any of the old catalogs .
Anyway here is some of the pictures of what I have of it and thanks for those that can shed a little light on these beautiful Wings of that time.

Here’s some “Wenge” wood in board form that shows the same sort of veining in the grain .

I have a 1963 catalog and they call it Hawaiian Koa wood.

My 1963 Wing Catalog says nothing of Wenge nor Hawaiian Koa. Just Rosewood. To me it could be East Indian Rosewood like that was used by Damon Howatt in the Super Diablo.

Kelly and Wade ,
Thanks for checking and I was told it was Wenge by the previous owner but I was curious if it was something more or less as a trial wood to see how much mass it would have or just someone wanting a custom bow and chose Wenge ?
I know if it was a custom that Wing label would of included that it was a custom but I have seen the Hawaiian Koa and I have a Rosewood and this riser doesn’t appear as those two.
When I sent Rich Lopez pictures he said he has seen Wenge on them but it was  rare .
I’ll get some really good pictures once I have it in hand for you guys along side my Rosewood that isn’t many numbers off of this one .
I’ve been doing a lot of searching and can’t find one like it in my search .
I’m wondering “If “ Bob Lee had saved any of the registration cards or kept notes back then but that was over 56 years ago and since the company had a change of hands I’m guessing some registered warranty information got tossed or trashed .
Thanks again guys and I’ll keep you updated and share what I find as well.

I just downloaded  both the East India Rosewood and the Hawaiian Koa to compare the grain or veining to.

Definitely Wenge.  I used to be a manager at Woodcraft.  That riser would be very expensive nowadays.
