I have noticed there are some bows you very rarely find on the used market. Big River for one. MOAB by Thunder stick is another. I know they are no longer being made.
:coffee: :campfire:
-
Stotler Longbows
-
I hardly ever see Green Mountain or Saxon bows on the market. If I did, I’d be a much poorer man.
-
That’s how I feel about Big River granted John didn’t make that many per year.
:campfire:
-
Seems like the next one I’m after!!! :biglaugh: :bigsmyl: :biglaugh:
-
Generally speaking, bows made in smaller numbers are harder to find and that certainly applies to very fine ones. Conversely there are some exceptional bows that quite a few of have been produced that can be found pretty easily.
-
I mentioned in one of my posts. I almost never see a Blacktail for sale
-
I’m glad I have the two Big River bows I do, a recurve and a D/R longbow both @66#. Also a MOAB as a backup bow @64#.
:campfire:
-
These days a Rose Oak is pretty scarce. Beautiful bows.
-
I'm a lucky guy that owns two Green Mountain longbows.
Here is one you never see for sale: Lonetree longbows, I have the Ocelot model, it is a fantastic longbow.
-
Seems like those who own an Ed Scott now hang on to them.
-
Most anything in a lefty.
-
There are a ton of different offerings on AT in the trad classified section. I've seen a few Blacktail over the years and I've bought and traded Big Jim's and Tall Tines and Widows.
Kind of like Portobello Road.
-
Frank SAN Marco, Scorpoin by M.R.Hamilton,Half Moon by Riccardo Annali
-
OK, I will be the smart guy. Only bows hard to find for me is the one I am looking for!
-
I never see Abbott's. Would love to have a back up for the one I have now but I can't find any.
-
Probably don't mean a thing to anyone but me, but I like the Kentuckian longbows, made by, I believe Roy McIntosh. Would like to have another one one day in addition to my current daily shooter.
-
The ones I want that are long enough to draw to 31" that aren't too high in draw weight!
-
Anything left handed.
Bill Stewart signature multi cam t/d recurve. Or an Owen Jeffery t/d recurve.
-
I have to agree with Trenton.. I still have my very first traditionally ordered 1993. longbow from Steve Abbott which is the bow that I took my first ever whitetail deer with ! It's 60#@27 which is a bit much for me these days. I also miss my Shadow bows as well. They haven't been built for years as far as I know ? Anybody have one ? :bigsmyl:
-
Ive only been shooting trad for about 15 years, much less than some of yall Im sure. But heres some bows that I dont think ive ever ran across used for sale.
Little Sucklings
Chaparral Kaibab
Mahaska bows
Elk Hoof Longbows
Southern Draw bows
I also dont cruise used bow postings as often as I should tho! But those are a few Id like to have if I ever found any.
-
Lots of bows named I have never heard of. I would suspect they don't make a lot of them unlike Bear , Browning and Shakespeare etc.
-
Stotler's are like hens teeth, many models of older bows are really high poundage.
-
High poundage suits me just fine.
:campfire:
-
I agree that numbers produced directly affect listed for sale.
Black Widows seem to always be available and I attribute thus to their sheer numbers.
-
Staghorn's, Howards, Target Fasco's,
As for Staghorn's I do have an perfect original XP 64" that original 40@28" that I am going to let go. Fastest 40lb recurve Ive ever saw in 40yrs of shooting Trad.
HH~

smag how fast does it shoot a 10 gpp arrow?

Any Saxon.

Sunset Hill by Nate Steen

Just ordered a Great Plains traditional longbow. Don't see many up for sale. New owner, Shane is a real nice guy and by all accounts an excellent bowyer. He worked with me to put together a custom bow with all the "options". Choice of exotic woods, antler, horn or phenolic tips and overlays all included in the price. So, cocobolo/phenolic riser with polished horn tips, cocobolo overlays on Tonkin bamboo veneers and leather grip for $860. :shaka:
-
Tice & Watts
Staghorns also
-
For the number of Howatt Hunters made you don't see many for sale.
-
Recently found a Black Widow PL Series One Piece Long Bow in perfect condition with the Ironwood Riser 51#. Had to have it .

Recently found a Black Widow PL Series One Piece Long Bow in perfect condition with the Ironwood Riser 51#. Had to have it .
That would be a PL V. They are sweet shooting and sweet looking bows. Ironwood riser with stacked bamboo in the limbs....
-
Bighorn (especially one-piece), Bob Lee (although I did just get one used) and Kota Kill-Um ( really nice 50's style bow I might add).
-
I'd like to find a Hokolesqua" long bow by Jim Emerson. I had 2 at one time, but, they were heavy poundages. That's the Shawnee Indian name for chief "Corn Stalk".....a big chief in the Daniel Boone days. I live very close to one of the old Shawnee villages. Blue Jacket was a war chief during those times. There you have a very brief Shawnee Indian history 101 lesson ! I'd still like to find one of Jim's lower poundage bows though :)
-
Timberline, Schulz, Early Howard Hill. Bear Kodiak 1955 - 69. Hoyt Hunter, Sunbear, Tim Meigs.
-
Rocky Mountain Recurve and Savage Deathmaster are hard to find.
-
Thunderhorn longbows for one, once you have one you don't want to give it up. Mr Jessop has been building bows over 30 years and makes a beautiful bow that really shoots well, also dead in the hand.
-
It's difficult to find a Hummingbird Recurve in the low forties. Another bow I'd love to have is a Panther bamboo Semi recurve that was sold back in the early 1950s by Malibu Archery in California.
:archer2:
-
Cascade mountain archery, Skookum longbows by Fred Anderson. Some beautiful work
-
Sarrels Archery. He makes a ton and yet I only see one a year or so pop up.
-
How about a Texas Recurve that was a really nice short bow and my buddy was deadly with it. Also Jack Howards Gamemaster Jet recurves were great bows and he was way ahead of his time!
Thanks,
Roger
-
Plainsman by Fred Hass.
-
Harrison, Matlock, Elburg, Robertson longbows, the lil KT44's, Strunk selfbows, agree about texas recurves especially in the 50# range very HTF, Green Mtn, Grey wolf , Yellowstone, Genesis osage snakey & ELB's , original pittsley's (not niche) , Alaska Archery ( includes Watkins) and many many more,,, thing is most people that I know of who have these rare bows don't bother much with the internet let alone shipping and dealing with people they don't know, you need to go to them and bring cash....
someone asked about lightweight hummingbird recurves,, I know of a guy that has 3 along with 2 longbows but he has never went on any archery forum that I know of and doesn't need money so he doesn't sell anything.
-
Believe that Linda Graham may be bringing back the Hummingbird line with a new bowyer-can only hope at this point.
-
A post by Linda copied from another forum:
We are in the process of deciding which ones to start with and then making some up for test runs will be late this year or early next year.Definitely TD.Recurve since already have orders waiting. Not sure how I will do website.
-
Linda and Ben Graham made some great bows. I wish that I had one of the ones that I once had. Some of them were very close to perfection. Good luck Linda. You have our support.
:archer2:
-
I kinda feel a different bowyer making any bows really isn't the same thing,, BUT I think I'd order one anyway. since 1986 Ive been experiencing that voice in my head that says over and over "you should of bought one and not waited" many times I waited and then the bow line or even bowyer was gone.... people now who read this if you really really feel its the one for you then get your order in,,, if you don't want to buy and wait then find people who have them and give them your address and phone # and beg them to at least contact you when they are thinking about selling or trading...... twice in my life so far I've gotten calls from the past at first I'm like " what bow you talking bout" but I got two rare bows that way that I knew I wanted.
bow brands to ad to the above list,,,, Marriah's, (anyone have my Chinook 64' 60@28 named "the springer") Jay st Charles yew longbows (anyone have my 66" yew T/D named "Ginger") Kentuckian longbows, firesticks by torges, wildwood archery, Stillwater, Ron Maulding longbows......... I have a Trad archery brochure collection I started in the 80's when you had to mail a dollar, I should go thru I bet theres a bunch more I can't remember.
-
I mentioned in one of my posts. I almost never see a Blacktail for sale
You can get lucky though! My go to bow is a TD blacktail I got off craigslist with a selway quiver for $350.
-
Bart thats like Hitting the lottery

Found a Dave Guthrie Appalachian recurve, like new recently [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I have only ever seen a Choctaw Recurve advertised for sale once. Come to think of it, it may not have been a sale but a fundraiser or auction. but only once in more than 20 years of traditional archery obsession.
-
Original built by John, Rampart recurves and longbows. One of the best...seldom seen for sale.
-
How about john jordan stalker recurves and i think he is still in buisness
-
Have been looking for a Bighorn 1-piece Recurve (50+ lbs) for years!!! I'm a lefty, so obviously an additional challenge.
Rando
-
Harold Groves's Mags. In good shape. See them once in a while up for sale but normally been monkeyed with, drilled holes and such. OL Adcock , oh those are sure shooters!! I have a few, I would not part with them either. I have a one piece Big Horn I finally found in a good weight for me. I am letting a friend use it this season. Sure is making me nervous him running around in the woods with it. Bill Matlock Longbows. I wonder how he is doing? Awesome bowyer, din't make many then had a stroke. He baked/cured mine in a car when he lived in the desert down south when it was made! Most of you know I am a sucker for Jack Howards. Always looking for lower weights in good shape. Jack sure did make a bunch in the upper weights.
-
I just bought a LH 45# ( :o !!!!!) original Texas Comanche recurve (Grumley style tips). You never see one that light and never LH.
-
Earth Archery and Assenheimer. I use to have both.
-
I sure don't see a lot of Don Adams English Yew longbows for sale. He made them for many years and a lot of them made their way to England.
-
Dale Dye bows, San Marco longbows, and my favorite Jack Howard Gamemaster recurve
-
wow,,, finding a 45# commanche I don't think I have ever seen one that low in weight forsale.
earth archery was another I had a longbow from him years ago I remember the grip is what really blew me away,,,, how about welchman longbows another rare bow.
-
Ted, your post from the previous page about waiting and putting off calling and talking to or ordering a bow really hits close to home with the recent passing of Chad Holm. One of his River Runners with static tips was, and will always be on my wish list. I should have made the call...
Jason
-
Jason its so true i mean look at this thread and how
So many are pretty much gone forever ,, if i could only go back in time with a pocket full of money..
-
I’d like to have one more Big River and/or MOAB as well.
:campfire:
-
Don't see a lot of Elburgs for sale.IMO one of the best kept secrets of longbows. The man knew how to build an efficient hard hitting LB.
Drakes don't come up a lot either.
-
Here's one you don't see very often...50#@28 contemplating reducing to 40#@28 but maybe just too pretty to take to my knife grinder? tippit

-
Hardly ever see a Rocky Mountain Recurve for sale...
-
Here's one you don't see very often...
Tippit, I think you need to publish an encyclopedia of the bows you own!
-
Don't tell that to my wife :knothead:
-
Don't see many ,LH Checkmate or Dream Catchers for sale
-
Brandon from Rose Oak is out of the bow business.
-
Kempf Kwyk Styks, and any of Ken Rohloff's Whippen Sticks.
-
that is one extremely radiused shelf on the adcock bow!
-
Very rare for a Morrison to come up, Bob's original ones, not the new ILF bows. Had several of those that I would like to have back.
-
Two Feathers
-
Two Feathers
Wow, never even heard of them. are they still for sale? Love the look of the top one.
-
They are but I don't know if I'm allowed to post a link to them here.
-
Love to find a Cravotta Brothers Blackhawk longbow 40 @ 28. Would make my day I tell ya!
-
Since we are on this topic... If anyone has one or a lead to one, I would love to add a Mike Treadway "black forest" or "black swamp" to the bow rack. Help pass the time while patiently waiting for my turn on his list 😉
-
Years ago I owned a couple of longbows made by Doug Hill. I haven't seen any of them for sale. Doug made an awesome bow.
-
Rodney wright I have a firehawk that's I found in 2000. I have only seen a handful for sale though.
-
Kittatinny - I agree on the Doug Hill bows. I have two of them. Unfortunately they are too much poundage for me now a days. Just have them hanging on the wall.
-
Rick,
Try reducing weight even drastically...tippit
-
Rick, the Doug Hill longbows that I owned pulled 64 and 72 @28" . They would be way too heavy for me now. With my tendonitis, I may have to learn to shoot left handed. Both bows were way before the internet. The 64# bow, I purchased from traditional archery catalog. I was told that it was a test bow, and was mentioned in Traditional Bowhunter magazine.
I believe that would've been back around 1992. I could never find the issue that he mentioned.
-
Braxton, I was fortunate to get both a Treadway black forest and black swamp in a lefty not long ago. Thought I was done buying bows due to a nagging injury but it's finally getting better. You don't find them used very often.
-
Wildfork Longbow, by Van Normand, Arrobow Longbow, by Steven Childers, and Gerry Welch’s Welchman Longbows
-
@Longbow1415 @Tajue17 I have a #Welchman Longbow in on consignment now if you are interested.
wow,,, finding a 45# commanche I don't think I have ever seen one that low in weight forsale.
earth archery was another I had a longbow from him years ago I remember the grip is what really blew me away,,,, how about welchman longbows another rare bow.
-
Love to find a Cravotta Brothers Blackhawk longbow 40 @ 28. Would make my day I tell ya!
@Yellah, I sold one a while back, but it was a stout 69#.
-
You don’t see a lotof Yellowstone longbows for sale. I wouldn’t mind finding a Yellowstone Half Breed in the right specs.
-
There’s a lot of shrew bows out there but you don’t see many for sale.
-
1996 Bear Kodiak Takedown in the traditional camo finish.
Here is a rare one ( the finish anyway ). It's a 1996 Bear Kodiak Takedown in traditional camo according to Bear Archery. When I would go to 3D shoots or ETAR someone would always offer to buy it. After numerous offers I wondered why there was so much interest since it was just a Bear Kodiak Takedown. I called Bear Archery and ask the employee who answered the phone. He said he didn't know but he would transfer my call to someone who would. He transferred my call to Frank Scott. Frank Scott told me less than twenty-five Bear Kodiak Takedowns where made in the traditional camo finish then Bear Archery decided to stop offering it in the traditional camo.
-
Dale Stahl. Great takedown recurves! Almost never see for sale.
-
Chad Holm River Runner in my specs. I'm still looking
-
I'm fortunate enough to have three Big River bows; recurve Kodiak clone 67# @28", D/R longbow 21st Century clone 65# @27", both @66# at my draw length. Finally a mild D/R longbow 60#@30"- 54# for me.
:campfire: :coffee: :archer2: :campfire:
-
I found a Garrisons Halfbreed recurve online and dang this bow is a sweetie. I had never heard of Edward Garrison before but I am very happy to have one of his bows.
-
No one seems to want to part with their Zebra (Louis Armbruster) bows. I think I've seen maybe a half dozen since 2017, and none in the poundage I want :/ My 83# Zebra Grevy is an awesome bow, but too heavy to put more than a few arrows downrange in a session. 60# to 70# would be perfect.
-
Not certain if this is appropriate for this thread,:dunno:but, my uncle had a lemon wood longbow back when I was kid. He had me try to draw it when I was 5 or 6 years old, he laughed. Don't see these at all. Anyone know why, is lemon wood inferior by today's standards?
Tim
-
According to goggle; the trade embargo with Cuba made lemonwood cost prohibitive to import through South America and Osage was more readily available.
:campfire: :coffee: :archer2: :campfire:
-
Another one you never see for sale are by a bowyer named Lynn Harrelson. I found a Kolomi osage longbow at the 3 Trails 3-D shoot. American longbow style, osage and clear glass. Sweet shooting bow. I understand he had a small business in Alabama during the 1990-2000 time frame.
-
Many of the low volume smaller bowyers are/were very good.

Another forum actually has a Mike Fedora for sale.
Surprised me.
-
Sovereign Ballistiks or tridents
Genesis character selfbows or his bamboo backed osages
Welchman english yew bows
St charles laminated yew tae downs
Kt 44's in any configuration
Ghost Recurves
Anything from Harry Elburg ( i prayed for Cherokee mag after trading one)
I used to collect bowyer brochures up until every went digital i have them all including many that had actual 35m pics,, its cool going thru them every so many years and seeing the bows that are gone.
-
There are lots of Schafer Silvertip recurves around, but nobody wants to part with a 62-64" recurve
-
6 of the 9 bows I own are no longer being made, due to retirement, passing of the bowyers, or company changing direction/ownership.
:campfire: :coffee: :archer2: :campfire:
-
Deathwish Longbows. I had one thirty years ago and understand they are still built in Richland Center, WI by the original bowyer, Steve Welte’s daughter. Super nice bows hat you almost never see for sale as used.
